Ludington’s history was shaped by its waterways, early Native American settlements, explorers and lumberjacks. The Father Marquette Shrine is a tribute to the famous missionary and explorer. Located at the west end of Pere Marquette Lake off South Lakeshore Drive, it marks the site of his death in 1675. By the late 1800s, the lumber era hit full stride. Lumber camps began sprouting. Eventually, the community known as Pere Marquette Village became Ludington. Thanks to the millions of board feet of timber and other wood products, the town developed into a major Great Lakes shipping port. By the mid 1950s, Ludington was known as the largest carferry port in the world. Today, the S.S. Badger continues the tradition as the largest carferry ever built. Taking a scenic ride is a must-do activity for all ages. Lake Michigan formed 10,000 years ago when glaciers receded, leaving deep gorges that filled with water. Lake Michigan is the sixth largest freshwater lake in the world and features the largest freshwater dunes which line its 1,638 mile-long coastline. The third largest Great Lake by surface area, at 22,300 square miles, the lake is the only Great Lake wholly within the borders of the United States. Because of prevailing winds, warmer waters flow to the Michigan side, making it more inviting to swimmers. Its narrowest point runs between Ludington and Two Rivers, Wisconsin. The lake has an average depth of 279 feet and a maximum depth of 925 feet. The annual Mason County Fair is a summer highlight. MASON COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS West U.S. 10 843-8563 www.masoncountyfairgrounds.com In addition to the traditional county fair in July, the fairgrounds plays host to horse shows, llama shows, a snowball demo derby, antique shows and more.
