WELCOME
From the air (left) and
the water (below), the
Ludington coastline
beckons.
Welcome
to the Ludington Area, land of
waterfront and wilderness, where,
in Michigan, the West Coast fuses
with Northern Michigan.
While you are visiting take in our natural resources.
You’ll find that our beaches, lakes, trails, and rivers are
the perfect setting for the full spectrum of outdoor
recreation. We have miles of sugary sand beaches
along the shores of Lake Michigan leading north to
one of the most popular State Parks in the entire State.
Take time to soak up the sun, explore our rich history
and nostalgia, and enjoy our friendly, hometown
communities.
While visiting the area, be sure to experience our
rolling sand dunes or jump on board any one of our 67
charterboats to catch that “big one.” Check out the
stunning natural beauty of Pere Marquette River. The
river empties into Lake Michigan in Ludington and
creates a focal point of the community’s beauty and the
home port of the S.S. Badger, the 410-foot carferry that
carries passengers and their vehicles from Ludington to
Manitowoc, Wisconsin. While you’ll find a diversity of
things to do here, there is one constant: friendly smalltown charm and locals who are truly glad you have
chosen to visit our area.
The Ludington area has much to discover with our
timeless appeal, changing seasons, and our spectacular
surroundings — you’ll come to love this area as much
as we do!
Come experience for yourself, the beauty of the
Ludington area — where in Michigan the beauty of the
north truly begins. Can’t wait to see you in our neck of
the woods.

Seize the season’s best
It’s always the right time for fun
There’s never an off-season in the
Ludington region, only opportunities to
try new challenges or revisit favorite
pastimes as the seasons change. You’ll
know it’s spring when trout fishermen
take to the waters. On land, vanishing
winter snows clear the way for the
beginning of the boat and golf seasons.
The long summer days are perfect for
beaching, water play, biking, hiking,
concerts under the stars, festivals, fairs
and, of course, camping. Fall color
tours, historic barn tours, visits to the

celebrations highlight the autumn
months, which give way to snow and
the pleasures of snowmobiling, ice
fishing, cross-country skiing,
snowshoeing, ice skating and sledding.
Winter trail options. When being amid
the snow-covered trees is tops, visit

RECREATING ON THE WATER
From the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan to its
dozens of inland lakes and scenic rivers, Ludington’s
great waterways beckon sailors, anglers and waterlovers of all ages.
The area offers 70 miles of Lake Michigan coastline,
unparalleled for its beauty, and a deepwater harbor
providing a safe haven for boaters. Sandy shores
accented by windswept dunes stretch from Silver Lake
Park to the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Beach.
Inland, 60 quiet lakes grace the Mason County
landscape and rivers, including the Big Sable River
Lincoln River and the Pere Marquette River, a
designated National Wild and Scenic River.
This diverse water playground provides endless
opportunities for beaching, swimming, fishing and
boating activities. More than 18 public boat launches
located throughout the county accommodate wave
runners, pontoons, paddle boats, motorboats, rowboats, canoes and kayaks. Boaters find easy access to
more than 10 public and private marinas and nearly
500 slips.
Ludington Municipal Marina, located along the Pere
Marquette Channel, accommodates vessels up to 60
feet in length, providing showers, beverages and free
Internet service. Harbor View Marina accommodates
vessels up to 100 feet in length, offering a clubhouse
with Wi-Fi service, a dog run and fish-cleaning station.
Both provide fuel, pump-outs, electricity and cable TV
and are a pleasant walk from shopping and restaurants.
Ludington’s deepwater harbor is an easily navigated,
well-maintained port. It boasts the largest charter fishing
With its many inland lakes, rivers and access to Lake Michigan,
Mason County floats boats of all types.
fleet on the Great Lakes. Its charter captains are experts
in knowing just where the Steelhead coho, brown
trout, lake trout and King salmon are biting. With an
average of nine fish caught per trip, the port maintains
Michigan’s top charter catch rate.
Along inland waters, river guides share their intimate
knowledge of the aquaculture for successful catches.
The county’s small lakes support plentiful populations
of tiger muskie, northern pike, large and small-mouth
bass, perch, crappie, blue gill and walleye. The historic
Hamlin Dam, located just outside Ludington State
Park, is a popular destination for fishing as are the Big
Sable Point Lighthouse pier and City Park bridge.
Great Lakes adventurers also enjoy charter day sails,
sunset cruises and experiences aboard the S.S. Badger
carferry, the only coal-fired passenger steamship in
North America. The ferry carries passengers between
Ludington and Manitowoc, Wisconsin each year from
mid-May through mid-October. The four-hour cruise
across 60 miles of open water is a comfortable and
relaxing journey. Passengers take in exhilarating views
from outside decks or find refreshment at the ship
lounges. Kids unleash energy in the playroom and
video arcade. A gift shop and maritime historical
display, live entertainment and Badger Bingo games fill
the time with laughter and excitement. The Badger
accommodates passengers, autos, motorcycles, bicycles,
commercial traffic and pets on approximately 500
crossings per year.
It’s all part of Ludington’s true north experience.
RECREATING ON THE WATER
World-class beaches
Splash, sun and stroll along sugar sand shores
LUDINGTON STATE PARK
BEACH has drawn recognition for its
sugar-sand shoreline and scenic spot
on the Lake Michigan coastline. From
the Detroit Free Press: “The state park
is one of Michigan’s most popular,
with good reason. It has five-and-a-half
miles of wide, sugary white sand
beach, an old-fashioned shingled beach
house and big verandas and easy
access for everyone.”
STEARNS PARK BEACH, at the
west end of Ludington Avenue, offers a
family-friendly atmosphere with 2,500
feet of sandy shoreline, a grassy area
with plenty of picnic tables and grills, a
playground, mini-golf, volleyball and
shuffleboard. A long, walkable pier juts
out to the North Breakwater Light.
SUMMIT PARK BEACH requires
only a short stroll from the park down
a sandy path to the beach. Located on
South Lakeshore Drive, Summit Park is
a great place to enjoy an evening
dinner around one of the park’s picnic
tables, then head down to the water
and wade into Lake Michigan.
Carferry
S.S. BADGER
NORDHOUSE DUNES
WILDERNESS BEACH, a federally
designated wilderness area
encompassing 3,500 acres, is a place
to get away from it all. With 7,300 feet
of pristine, undeveloped shoreline and
14.5 miles of trails, this beach is a
remote but popular hiking destination
which can be accessed through the
Lake Michigan Recreation Area or the
Ludington State Park.

It’s no mystery as to why Ludington is a leading
destination for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Its
reputation is well earned by enduring traditions in
camping, hunting, hiking, biking and fishing and other
woodland activities.
The Manistee National Forest, which surrounds and
extends into Mason County, is home to a segment of
the cross-state North Country Trail, a National Scenic
The Ludington area’s

RECREATING ON THE LAND
Trail favored for hiking and backpacking and crosscountry skiing and snowshoeing. Fragrant pines and
oaks line the trail and the Little Manistee River provides
hikers opportunity for fishing and canoeing. The trail
also encompasses the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness
Area, the Lake Michigan Recreation Area and five wild
and scenic rivers, including the Pere Marquette, Pine
and Manistee Rivers.
The Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area, a 3,450-acre
ecosystem, is the only federally designated wilderness
in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. It features one of the
largest tracts of unspoiled dunes in the world. Enjoy
panoramic views of Lake Michigan from atop these
geological wonders.
Ludington State Park is located between Lake Michigan
and the clear waters of Hamlin Lake with more than six
miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. The park boasts sand
dunes, virgin stands of evergreen and hardwood trees,
soft sandy beaches and an extensive network of hiking,
skiing, biking and canoe trails, perfect for family backto-nature excursions.
A 1.5-mile paved bicycle path runs through the main
park area and a 1.5-mile gravel path runs to Big Sable
Point Lighthouse. A bike lane extends along Lake
Michigan on the shoulder of highway M-116 to the
entrance of Ludington State Park. The park also has 18
miles of hiking trails and 16 miles of cross-country
ski trails. In addition, the park’s Great Lakes Visitor
Center offers interpretive displays, slide and video
presentations and live programs on wildlife, geology
and area history.
If you enjoy the thrill of the hunt or getting the big
catch of the day, you’ll discover Mason County
provides a plethora of year-round hunting adventures.
Sportsmen will find big game, upland game birds,
waterfowl and trapping.
If the smoke of a bonfire and a canopy of pines
provide your escape from daily routines, you’ll find a
wide array of camp sites in Mason County. Options
include woodland, riverside and inland lake sites
along the sandy shores of Lake Michigan. You will
find everything from rustic campsites to full hook-up
RV parks.
For encounters with the animal kingdom, you’ve
definitely come to the right place. Bring your camera
and capture wildlife in its natural habitat—bald eagles,
herons, waterfowl, songbirds, deer, squirrels, beaver,
frogs and a variety of other animals. Share their secrets
in this land of unspoiled beauty and endless natural
marvels.

Sculpture and history come together at the Ludington waterfront.
Arts galore
Embark on a cultural journey
Surrounded by stunning four-season beauty, it seems
natural that Ludington’s enthusiasm for the great outdoors
encompasses its arts community. Its ever-expanding
Waterfront Sculpture Garden offers one of the finest open
air collections of public art in Michigan with life-size bronze
sculptures set amidst a manicured lawn. Sculptures reflect
the region’s rich maritime, rail and lumber heritage. During
summer months, live music adds to the waterfront arts
culture.
Nature inspires art. This affinity takes full form in 2009
when the new Ludington Area Center for the Arts unveils a
downtown center and debuts a line-up of visual and
performing arts classes, exhibits and concerts. Children
discover cultural joys at Sandcastles Children’s Museum
through story-telling, puppetry, painting and other artistic
traditions.
Jump into your favorite art experience, including the West
Shore League’s Fine Arts and Crafts show the first weekend
in July and the Chamber of Commerce artisan fair in August.
Weekly summer concerts fill the water-front with the region’s
most impressive talent. Free movie showings in City Park,
gallery walks, murals, children’s paint-ins—they’re all a part
of Ludington’s lively arts scene.
Yesterday revisited
Encounter treasures past and present
A living history lesson awaits at White Pine Village where more
than 29 buildings recreate Ludington’s storied past. Self-guided tours
through the Old Mason County Courthouse, Pentwater Post Office, a
lumber camp, 1880s farmhouse, one-room schoolhouse and
hardware store transport visitors through time.
White Pine Village offers baseball fans a nostalgic experience of
their own. The village hosts Old Time Baseball Club games played by
members of the Vintage Baseball Association in accordance with
1860s rules and period uniforms.

Ludington’s history was shaped by its
waterways, early Native American settlements,
explorers and lumberjacks. The Father Marquette
Shrine is a tribute to the famous missionary and
explorer. Located at the west end of Pere
Marquette Lake off South Lakeshore Drive, it
marks the site of his death in 1675.
By the late 1800s, the lumber era hit full stride.
Lumber camps began sprouting. Eventually, the
community known as Pere Marquette Village
became Ludington. Thanks to the millions of board
feet of timber and other wood products, the town
developed into a major Great Lakes shipping port.
By the mid 1950s, Ludington was known as the
largest carferry port in the world. Today, the S.S.
Badger continues the tradition as the largest
carferry ever built.
From its distinguished past to today’s vibrant
lifestyle, Ludington remains a standout. Discover

boutiques and gifts are only the beginning. You’ll find a
skate shop, music store, art galleries and even a
gourmet grocery and meat market.
The downtown district runs along Ludington Avenue

SCOTTVILLE. Situated along the scenic Pere Marquette
River, Scottville is located eight miles east of Ludington
at the intersection of U.S. 10 and U.S. 31. Think of
Scottville and you’ll undoubtedly think of the world
renowned, zany Scottville Clown Band. But this
Michigan “Cool City” participant is also home to the
Western Michigan Old Engine Club, West Shore
Community College and Scottville Riverside Park. The
century-old community is moving forward at high
speed these days. It offers free Wi-Fi access throughout
the downtown district. A friendly farmers market and
weekly summer concerts add to the small-town charm
of this community on the move.

FOR THE ARTS
Pere Marquette River is one of the most
prized trout, steelhead and salmon

also extremely popular with canoeists and
kayakers. This beautiful sandy river
wanders gently for 66 miles through the
hills of the Manistee National Forest on its
way to Lake Michigan.
Ludington’s new Skate Plaza features a mini-pipe,

MURALS
LUDINGTON PUMPED
STORAGE PLANT
From the outside it looks like a grassy
hillside topped by an 842-acre lake
along the Lake Michigan shoreline. But
at the base of this hydro electric
generation facility, huge turbines
generate enough electricity to support
a community of about 1.4 million
people. Two scenic overlooks are
accessible from the parking lot on
South Lakeshore Drive four miles
south of Ludington.

MAC WOODS DUNE RIDES
629 N. 18th Ave., Mears
873-2817
www.macwoodsdunerides.com
Mountainous sand dunes cover 1,800
acres of land. Taking a scenic ride is a
must-do activity for all ages.
Lake Michigan formed 10,000 years ago
when glaciers receded, leaving deep gorges
that filled with water. Lake Michigan is the
sixth largest freshwater lake in the world and
features the largest freshwater dunes which
line its 1,638 mile-long coastline. The third
largest Great Lake by surface area, at 22,300
square miles, the lake is the only Great Lake
wholly within the borders of the United
States. Because of prevailing winds, warmer
waters flow to the Michigan side, making it
more inviting to swimmers. Its narrowest
point runs between Ludington and Two
Rivers, Wisconsin. The lake has an average
depth of 279 feet and a maximum depth of
925 feet.
