County Commissioner’s Message
Inspire a Generation. London 2012 certainly did that and, in fact, inspired many generations as our athletes ran, jumped,
sailed and cycled to new heights. For my part, I started cycling again though I won’t make it to Rio even if I set off today!
I’m sure we’ll all have our own memories of the Games and no two will be the same, just like the inspiration that comes
from them. Whilst some of you will be inspired to take up new or long-abandoned sporting activity, others will take heart
from the proof that commitment, sacrifice and faith bring success. As they do within our units. Thanks for your time and
effort, our members continue to get opportunities that others can only sit and dream about, and you can read about some
of them in this edition of our newsletter. Enjoy them and reflect on how you too inspire a generation.

Focus On... Ellen Hendry, County Join Us Coordinator
My name is Ellen Hendry and I
am the Join Us contact
coordinator for Lancashire
South East. My role currently
includes linking up new young
members and adult volunteers
with the appropriate unit/
commissioner.
June 2012 saw the Girlguiding
UK new Join Us website go live.
The new website aims to link
potential young members with
their chosen unit and adult volunteers with their local
Commissioner. The new Join Us system will offer
enquirers the choice of selecting their preferred unit by
name, day of meeting and distance. Once our region has
gone live the enquiry will be sent direct to the enquirer’s preferred unit.
Watch this space - more information on this will be
cascaded to all as soon as it is available.

Commissioners'
Cube
Division & District Subscription Levies need to be decided (and added to County
Go!) before 17 November. How do I decide how much? Start by calculating how
much your level expects to spend in 2013 (Commissioner expenses, awards, etc).
If this total is higher than the funds you have available in your Division/District
bank account, then you will need to gather some income (via census) in 2013.
Divide this figure of your anticipated expenditure by the number of members in
your area. This will give you the amount of Subs Levy per person.
If you need any support/help/advice please contact Assistant County
Commissioner, Lynne Scales, [email protected] or 01706 374857.

Rainbow’s 25th Birthday… how did you celebrate?
Saddleworth District Rainbows who celebrated their 25 th Birthday at a
trampoline centre. 78 Rainbows attended from all 5 Rainbow units across
Saddleworth.
A great night
was had by
all.
The 14th Oldham Guides went to the
Big Gig in Birmingham on 31st March.
They had a great time and all agreed
that the best act was
Olly Murs.
38th St Hilda’s, Tottington, had a fab time at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party,
great day out to celebrate Rainbows
25th birthday!
Oxfam Coffee Morning
32nd Rochdale Rangers decided to
support Oxfam for their Community
Action Octant. Over February and
March they planned a presentation
and presented it to the guides to
raise awareness of the work Oxfam
do both abroad and in the UK. The
evening with the guides went very
well and the leaders complimented
the rangers for all their hard work.
As part of their Octant they
committed to raising at least £300
for Oxfam and the first of their
fundraising events was a Coffee
Morning on Saturday 28th April 2012.
The Rangers managed to raise
£160.70 from this coffee morning
and selling football cards. They have
decided that their next event will
be a cookie sale nearer Christmas.
They are going to bake all the
cookies themselves.
Chadderton South Guides go to the Olympics!
19 girls and 6 leaders
descended on Essex to help the
Olympic celebrations along this
summer! They stayed at
Chigwell Row and went to visit
CHQ, had a trip on the London
Eye, went on a London Duck tour
(that’s a bus that goes on the
roads and on the water, very
exciting) and visited Oxford
Street… that was just day one!
Of course, no trip to London would be complete without a trip to Pax
Lodge, where we met some international volunteers and took part in a
pinning ceremony.
The highlight of our trip was attending the Olympics and going to the
Olympic Park! We all went to see two women’s basketball games and
watched Bradley Wiggins win his gold medal on the big screens in the
Olympic Park!
Some of the group were lucky enough to have a second trip into the park to
see Jessica Ennis embark on her gold medal winning campaign in the
Olympic Stadium, and to see the Olympic flame first hand! We couldn’t all
get tickets for this, but the rest of the group had a great time in Covent
Garden, Leicester Square and at London Live in Victoria Park.
It was an amazing experience!
Milnrow District Guides and Brownies at the Milnrow Carnival!
40 girls and leaders took part and the theme of their float was World
Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). To coincide with
this, the float depicted the 4 world centres of girl guiding: London - Big
Ben, Mexico - Chichiniza, Switzerland - Chalet and India - Elephant.
Media Officer for the county, Suzanne Halkyard said: "The day was absolutely fantastic and the weather was ideal for a carnival. The girls
really enjoyed the day and loved being on the float."
After the carnival, the Guides and Brownies went to Hollingworth High
School, where they set up a recruitment stall. They later took part in a
competition to find different emblems, which was enjoyed by all of the
girls. They managed to recruit a dozen new girls who have since started to attend units or are on waiting lists until they
become old enough to join.
Fiona Wilson and Sally Cook organised the carnival and created the float ideas and overall carnival theme. This year, the
carnival theme was the Jubilee. To tie in with this, the Guides and Brownies were wearing red, white and blue.

43 Rochdale Brownie Trip to Media City
On Sunday 1st July 2012 we visited Media City for the CBBC tour, not CBeebies as
I kept saying to the Brownies! To begin with, all had to sign in and be given an
access pass to be worn at all times; very exciting and made the Brownies feel
very special. The tour include a visit to a Radio studio where we learned all
about how a rubber glove became wind, old video ribbon became leaves and how
they make sound like someone is very far away, but right next to you. The
Brownies got the chance to have a go at making the noises—it was entertaining.
Next on the trip was a visit to the CBBC cupboard, where Hacker the dog
presents from, the girls got the chance to some
presenting and a be Diddy Dick and Diddy Dom. They also got to visit the Blue
Peter set, which looks a lot bigger on TV than in real life and find out some of
show’s secrets, but unfortunately we are not allowed to reveal! We also saw
mock ups of Horrible Histories, Question of Sport and some of the dresses from
Strictly Come Dancing... very pretty. We had to stop Alician and Jess, our
Young Leaders from trying on the clothes!
Finally the Brownies got a chance to present Newsround, the weather and have
go backstage with the autocue.
It was a fantastic day and the staff at CBBC where excellent and very
knowledgable in all aspects from TV presenters to how much the land cost.
Verdict from the Brownies – Well worth a visit!
16th East Oldham Brownies
took part in the Sport Relief
Walk on Sunday 25th March.
They walked 3 laps of the
streets round their Church, tied
together as a 3-legged team! It
was a scorching hot day, but
we kept them going with drinks
and sweets. We raised a fantastic total of £600.
35th Rochdale Brownies have had a very busy summer...
In July they enjoyed a weekend pack holiday at Waddow with a flower power
theme. Brown Owl steered the ship ensuring everything ran smoothly, Barn Owl
and Demmi made sure they were fed and watered and Snowy Owl kept them
entertained with a variety of craft activities. We even had a visit from our
district commissioner on the Saturday who joined in!! Many of the girls faced
their fears whilst taking part on the crate challenge or climbing tree – we were
really proud as everyone had a go. We joined up with a guide unit on the
Saturday night to enjoy a camp fire - oh how we love to sing!! We had a number
of tired Brownies going home on the Sunday who had experienced new skills, enjoyed the first time away from home and
made new friends - can’t wait for next year!!
In August the Brownies were invited to have a day out to gain 2 new interest badges – Fire Safety and Swimmer. In the
morning we had a visit to the fire station where we had a look in the museum, had a go with the fire hose and had a look
around the station and engine. After lunch (which we had at the station) we walked down to the new Leisure Centre to
have a swimming lesson and a play. We had a great day with minimal costs at places on our doorstep.
