4th of July Celebration to
Take Place July 1st
By: Doug Rohrabaugh
Everything is set for this year’s 4th of July Celebration which will take place on Sunday, July 1, 2012 at
Centennial Park in Commerce, TX. This fun family event has become a part of summer fun here in Commerce
and the Chamber of Commerce is hoping that this will be the best year yet. The spectacular event will return to
Centennial Park located just south of Culver Street on FM 3218 next to Commerce Elementary School. Once
again the festivities will be free but participants are strongly encouraged to bring a canned food item to donate to
the Commerce Food Pantry.
The fun will start at 5:00 p.m. with live music by the Cross Trails Band followed by the Dixieland Band, and a
special headliner. Children will find many activities to keep them busy including bounce houses and pony rides.
The Commerce Chamber of Commerce will be providing several free activities for children and families including
sack races, a balloon toss, and a special magic show by professional magician David G. Wonders.
The Red -vs- Blue baseball game will return by popular demand. Last year both teams had so much fun that they
played a second game. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Eddie Moore Sports Complex and each player of
the winning team will be receiving a special prize courtesy of the Commerce Chamber of Commerce and the many
wonderful sponsors of the 4th of July Celebration.
The evening will conclude with one of the most brilliant fireworks displays in all of northeast Texas. The
hardworking people at Pyrotex always put together a marvelous show and we are happy to bring them back again
this year. The fireworks will begin as soon as it is dark enough to see them which is typically around 9:30 p.m.
We would like to thank our many sponsors that help to make this event possible.
Red Level Sponsors: Texas A&M University-Commerce, McDonald’s, Ben E Keith, and the City of Commerce

Board of Directors
Dear Valued Members,
Executive Board
We all know that running a small business is tough and some say that running a small business
in a small town is even tougher but there is a secret you need to know and that is, that it is more
fun than being in the big city! If you don’t believe me I will give you what has been deemed as
the top 5 advantages by Bloomberg BusinessWeek of running a small business in a small town.
President
Executive Vice-President

Past President
1.You don’t need GPS Navigation
2. Our network is smaller, but we care about you and your business
3. No “rush hour” – only “rush moment”
4. Random encounters are good for business
5. People are helpful
Board of Directors
I am sure you have all started using social media marketing since we last spoke and are on
your way to being tech savvy, so I want you to consider another option for marketing, consider
posting small simple videos to You-Tube and having the link posted on your Facebook or
Twitter or LinkedIn pages.
It is no secret that video can be an extremely effective marketing tool for small businesses. It
is engaging, interactive, and allows potential customers to get to know you and your business
before ever stepping foot in the store. It is a wonderful chance to start building relationships
with people you have never met and granting them an opportunity to get to know you, like you,
and trust you before making a purchase.
You can tell your company story; why you are in business and what you love about it while
highlighting what makes you unique. You can show off your location, introduce your staff,
provide customer testimonials and even show your products in action. You could give a simple
tutorial, a “how to” video which is highly popular and sought after these days. You can promote
one another, if your business uses another business in town; help each other out by letting others
know that you yourself shop local. Highlight promotions or specials or even hold a contest.
Share your success stories, your history and things of historical interest to the local consumer.
I am providing a couple of links one of which is a store owner telling why she opened her
business and what she loves about it and the other is a link showing a contest that a burger joint
promoted on You-Tube. Check them out and start planning a video of your own, I would love to
see videos from our local businesses and just think of the out of town customer you may reach
that would take a day trip to check out Commerce, Texas the home to your business that they
just had to see.

Chamber Mixer
Tenth Anniversary
Spring Fling Day Camp
By: Doug Rohrabaugh
The Commerce Chamber of Commerce will be holding its second mixer
of 2012 on Friday, June 22, 2012. State Farm Agent Dixie Turman will
host this event in her business located on the northwest corner of Live Oak
and Monroe (1500 Live Oak). These mixers offer Chamber members the
opportunity to get to know one another while networking and sharing ideas.
“We were really pleased with the turnout at our first mixer and hope that this
next mixer is even larger” stated Chamber President Ladonna Patterson.
Organized in 2002, Celebrate the Children ,a 501C3 non-profit agency,
embraces special needs children in the Northeast Texas Region by
sending them to a phenomenal day camp extravaganza on a working
ranch outside of Commerce,Texas. Wranglers, balloons, clowns, and
fire trucks open up the camping world to children who otherwise would
never experience the thrill of a hayride, the delight of catching their
first fish, or the sense of independence from riding a horse.
The first mixer of the year was held at Plain & Fancy Sandwich Shoppe and
was originally scheduled for April 3 but was cancelled due to severe weather
and rescheduled for April 24. Although there was a bit of confusion due to
rescheduling the event was attended by over twenty members. While one
can never be certain about the weather here in Texas the Chamber is hopeful
that there will be no severe weather on June 22 for this mixer.
With a 1:1 ratio of camper to volunteer, Celebrate the Children
emphasizes their abilities rather than their disabilities. The kids take
home new friendships, enhanced group communication skills, and an
improved self-esteem.
The mixer will begin at 4:30 p.m. and wrap-up around 6:30 p.m. This
is an open house type of event so participants can come and go as they
please. While shirts and shoes are required there is no formal dress
code for the Chamber mixer. The Chamber consists of all kinds of
businesses from Plumbers to Attorneys, Charitable Organizations to
Child Care Specialists, and everything in between. These Chamber
mixers are the perfect opportunity for members to grow their business
no matter what line of work they are in.
Heartfelt thanks go out to the generous contributors and compassionate
volunteers, who made it possible for us to celebrate our Tenth
Anniversary Spring Day Camp in April, 2012. For a first hand look
at these remarkable children, interested parties may go to our website
www.texaschild.org , Please call our office at (903) 886-8365 to
donate, to volunteer, or to inquire about future enrollment.

City Pool to
Open June 2nd
By: Doug Rohrabaugh
The Commerce City Pool is scheduled to open on Saturday, June 2nd at 1:00 p.m. For decades the City Pool has been a
popular place for Commerce residents to escape the heat during the summer months. Preparing the pool for the summer
season is no easy task. The Commerce Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) began took a new approach to pool
preparations by conducting routine maintenance throughout the winter months. In March the city sent PARD department
head Ricky Harris and new pool manager Cory Arrington to a training session in order for them to become certified pool
operators. In May Cory began working on the pool everyday all day in order to prepare for opening day. “This is Cory’s first
year to head up pool preparations and he is doing a great job” said Ricky Harris. Ricky also noted that “the water is crystal
clear and just about ready for opening day.”
Daily admission is just $3. The pool will be open during the summer months Thursday through Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until
7:00 p.m. The city will be offering swim lessons for children ages 3 and up in multiple skill levels. Lessons will be held in
four different sessions at three different times.
Session 1:
June 12-15 & 19-22
Session 2:
June 26-29 & July 3-6
Session 3:July 10-13 & 17-20
Session 4:
July 24-27 & July 31 – Aug. 3
The pool is also available for private parties for a fee of just $100 and includes the services of a certified lifeguard.
For more information about the Commerce City Pool, swim lessons, or private parties please contact the Commerce Parks
and Recreation Department at (903) 886-1150.

DNJ Learning Center
By: Doug Rohrabaugh
The DNJ Learning Center located at 2929 Monroe is now enrolling
new students from newborns to 12 year old children. DNJ offers
an exciting curriculum for children which will be presented by
experienced teachers. “We want to keep the learning process going
through the summer” said new Director Linda Mitchell. The new
management and staff at DNJ Learning Center also realize that it is
summer vacation and the children need to enjoy their break. Therefore,
DNJ will be incorporating fun activities such as a water activity day.
DNJ Learning Center is open from 5:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Monday
through Friday and is able to accept students with CCS. Transportation
is available to and from CISD schools throughout the regular school
year. Individuals interested in enrolling their child at DNJ will have
the $30 registration fee waived with presentation of this article.
Director Linda Mitchell also noted that DNJ Learning Center will be
holding an Open House toward the middle of June for families to tour
the facilities and enroll their children. For more information about
DNJ Learning Center please contact Linda Mitchell at (903) 886-2414.
Library Thanks Students
and Faculty with iPads
By: Kim Williams
James G. Gee Library at Texas A&M University-Commerce recently
administered the LibQual survey to assess library service quality. The survey
took place during the entire month of April with almost 1000 responses
gathered from A&M-Commerce students, faculty and staff.
Three participants were randomly selected to each win an iPad2. The library
will use the information gathered to determine which areas of service need
improvement and where patrons are satisfied.
“Gee Library is always seeking ways to better meet the needs of our
students, faculty, staff, and community,” said Emily Witsell, reference
librarian. “In order to solicit feedback from a broad group of library users
about how the library is doing, we administered the survey.”
The survey was developed by Texas A&M University and the Association
of Research Libraries. Library users rated the success in providing a wide
variety of services, such as online database access, study space, and help
from librarians.
“To show our appreciation for taking the time to submit feedback, everyone
who completed the survey was entered into a random drawing to win one
of three iPad 2s,” Witsell said. “Our winners were Arynne Johnson, Jessica
Luther and Dr. Chris Myers.”
Librarians are currently assessing the data gathered from the survey, and
results will be shared with the community in the fall.

Online Biology Master's
Degree Launches
Author Bil Martin Jr. Celebrated
at A&M-Commerce Symposium
By: Sydni Walker
By: Kim Williams
The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at Texas
A&M University-Commerce has recently launched a fully-online
Master’s of Science degree in biological science.
Texas A&M University-Commerce Department of Curriculum and Instruction
hosted the Eighth Annual Bill Martin Jr. Symposium May 4, 2012. Jim
Aylesworth, author of more than 30 children’s books, was featured as keynote
speaker.
The degree program will be available this summer to anyone with
a bachelor’s degree and some biology background. The program is
designed to provide opportunities for students to pursue advanced
training in biology using a non-thesis option.
“The department of biological and environmental sciences has had
a successful graduate program in biology for decades, but for many
people, because of their jobs and location, there was simply no
feasible way to enter or complete the program within a satisfactory
time frame,” said Dr. Haydn A. “Chip” Fox, director of the
environmental science program and assistant professor of biological
and environmental sciences. “One of the most notable groups
hampered in this way has been public school teachers.”
Fox explained that teachers are encouraged, and sometimes required,
to pursue a master’s degree, but do not have the time in a regular
school year to accomplish this task, leaving only summers to pursue
a graduate degree.
“The new fully-online biology master’s degree will enable teachers,
or anyone else, to complete the degree in as little as two years,” Fox
said. “Offering the online option to prospective students unable to
attend the university in person is a win-win situation for everyone.”
For more information about the master’s degree program, contact Dr.
Haydn A. “Chip” Fox at [email protected] or 903-886-5378.
“More than one hundred presenters collaborated in the 38 Breakout Sessions,
bringing favorite topics about classroom management, whole-brain learning,
using literature in middle school math, and singing in the classroom,” said Dr.
Josh Thompson, associate professor of early childhood education. “More than
400 participants especially enjoyed the fellowship experience, coming to a
conference together with peers from their schools or field-based centers.”
Featured presenters included co-authors Alma Flor Ada and Isabel Campoy,
authors of children’s books and books for teachers. Ada’s book Magical
Encounters, often used as a textbook in ESL/Bilingual courses.
The BMJ Symposium for educators is held in memory of Bill Martin Jr., author
of more than 300 children’s books and curriculum materials across a span of 50
years. The Bill Martin Jr. Library is housed on the campus of A&M-Commerce
and includes many of his published works, manuscripts, and letters from other
well-known authors in children’s literature.
Dr. Martha Foote, professor and department head for curriculum and instruction,
explained that Martin utilized rhythm, rhyme and sounds of language to create
some works that can be considered household favorites such as Brown Bear,
Brown Bear; Chicka Chicka Boom, Boom; and Knots on a Counting Rope. The
International Reading Association has named Martin to the Reading Hall of
Fame and has selected him as one of the Greats of the 20th Century.
Faculty members of the symposium steering committee were Josh Thompson,
Rheba Icenhower, Mary Beth Sampson, Chris Green, Susan Szabo, Susan
Williams, Gil Naizer, Martha Foote, Jennifer Sennette, Darla Meek, LaVerne
Raine, Heather Doyle, Donna McCrary, Rhonda Clark, Maureen Preston and
Priscilla Nichols.
The Ninth Annual BMJ Symposium is scheduled for Friday, May 3, 2013.

Page 16 Texas Rangers Raffle
By: Doug Rohrabaugh
The Commerce Chamber of Commerce will be raffling off two lower level tickets to a Texas
Rangers baseball game. The seats, valued at $55 each, are located right by third base just ten
rows up from the field. That is practically close enough to shake hands with third baseman
Adrian Beltre. The game will take place on Saturday, September 29, 2012 in Arlington
beginning at 7pm as the 2010/2011 American League Champion Texas Rangers host Albert
Pujols and the Los Angeles Angels. The Rangers are off to another really great season
leading the American League West Division with 26 wins and only 16 losses. Left fielder
Josh Hamilton is on fire this season as well with 18 home runs and 46 RBIs.
Raffle tickets will be sold for $5 each beginning on Sunday, July 1st at the Commerce
Chamber of Commerce Fourth of July Celebration at Centennial Park. Ticket sales will
continue through the summer with the drawing taking place on Saturday, September 22,
2012 at the 27th Annual Bois d’Arc Bash. The winner does not need to be present to win
and will be contacted on Monday, September 24, 2012 if necessary.
