Annual Report – Overview
Three years ago when Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri (CCSOMO) was first established, no one could
have predicted the great needs that would arise or the great opportunities that would surface for our agency to grow
and respond to the challenges.
Beginning with the support of the local Catholic community, the diocese and the nationwide network of Catholic
Charities organizations, CCSOMO faced the unprecedented natural disaster of the Joplin tornado and became
a vital source of help for those who lost everything. This event catapulted us into action and growth. From a
beginning with two employees we have now grown to a total of 35 staff members.
Rebuilding Homes/Rebuilding Lives Program
We continue to have a three-fold presence in Joplin: case managers working with families to put their lives back
together; staff and volunteers (over 23,000 thus far!) working to repair and rebuild hundreds of homes; and a
Donation and Distribution Center where staff receive and distribute furniture, appliances and household items to
those moving back into their repaired homes or newly built replacement homes. Our program is called Rebuilding
Homes/Rebuilding Lives.
Expansion of Services
Our growing knowledge and expertise in response to natural disasters allowed us to expand our home repair
services and disaster recovery case management services to cover 14 counties in southeastern Missouri that
experienced severe storms and flooding in 2011. CCSOMO staff work to help those affected, and volunteers join
staff to replace flooring, dry wall, roofs and other areas of homes that remain in disrepair and in unsafe condition
following the flooding.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Most importantly, in providing our services we never forget that at our core, we are a faith-based organization
committed to answering Christ’s call to serve “the least among us.” CCSOMO along with our staff, volunteers and
donors strive to be the hands and feet and heart of Christ, helping to empower families on their path out of poverty.
Thank you to all our donors!

We are very grateful for all our donors, large and small, who make our work possible. As one supporter wrote in sending in her
gift, “Wish it could be a 100 times larger—but as the old proverb goes, ‘If everyone gave a thread, the poor man would have a
shirt.’ So no gift is too small, if it is given with prayers.” We at Catholic Charities heartily agree!

Long-Term Disaster Recovery
Dear Friends,
At Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri we believe that, through our commitment to Christ and
His teachings, we continue His ministry of hope and
healing to those in need. As I complete my first year
as Executive Director of CCSOMO I am filled with
both gratitude for the accomplishments and progress of the last year as well as excitement and positive
expectations for the future.
Throughout this year, I have been humbled by the caring and goodness I have witnessed. Support for our neighbors came pouring in from all parts of the country—
donations, building supplies, clothing and much more. Many came to Joplin and
southeast Missouri to help us in repairing and rebuilding homes. These volunteers
not only touched the lives of the disaster survivors but all of the Catholic Charities staff. When I thanked one out-of-town volunteer for helping in our rebuilding
efforts, he turned to me with tears and said, “NO—thank YOU for letting me put
my faith in action.” Over 20,000 volunteers brought this caring spirit to southern
Missouri this past year. We are truly grateful for all our donors and volunteers.
It is a distinct privilege to be part of an organization that provides programs and
services that help people and change lives every day. In this report we share with
you some of the results of our work. We also look to the future where there is
much to do. There are many unmet needs of those recovering from 2011’s devastating tornados and floods. There are young women facing an unplanned pregnancy without support. There are many who need affordable mental health and
family counseling. We continue to listen to our communities to discern the needs
and determine where CCSOMO can be most effective.
We are a people of faith who seek to empower those in need to reach their emotional and economic potential. All of us together—staff, board members, donors,
volunteers and those we serve—are members of the same team, working toward
a common goal of strengthening families and guiding those in need on their path
to recovery.
We thank you for joining us.
With gratitude,
CCSOMO currently employs sixteen case managers and supervisors working
with those struggling to put their lives back together after the storms of 2011,
both in Joplin and southeastern Missouri. Over 12,000 individuals and families
have been assisted.
P.S. Please keep Catholic Charities, our clients and our work in your prayers
throughout the coming year.

CCSOMO staff works with volunteer groups of all faiths from around the country
to rebuild and repair homes destroyed and damaged in the Joplin tornado and
in the flooding that occurred in rural areas of southeastern Missouri. With the
help of over 23,000 volunteers, over 100 homes in Joplin have been repaired and
six houses rebuilt. Currently, 20 projects are in various stages of completion. In
southeast Missouri, over 600 volunteers have contributed their time to repair
homes, and repairs have been completed on 34 homes with 35 more projects
underway. As projects are completed, others are begun.
Our Donation and Distribution Center in Joplin stores furniture, appliances
and household items that are provided to families as they move back into their
repaired or rebuilt homes.

Catholic Charities funds its programs through a variety of sources, leveraging donations with other funds to stretch
the value of each dollar received. For example, in our disaster recovery work, we collaborate with county Long-Term
Recovery Committees and utilize mission dollars brought in by volunteer groups. We have received grants from
a number of foundations, organizations and corporations, and we have been awarded contracts from state and
federal agencies. In-kind contributions, 129,000 hours of volunteer service, and counseling fees also fuel our work.
In fact, for each dollar of individual donations received in this fiscal year, Catholic Charities leveraged an additional
$2.50 from other sources to support our programs. Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri now has a proven record
of success in providing for the needs of those who turn to us for help, and this record bolsters our ability to seek
funding. However, private individual support remains the backbone of our ability to continue our mission.
