SKETCH TO SCREEN
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
On Saturday, February 27, eight 705 members took
advantage of the opportunity to attend the "Sketch
to Screen" panel discussion and reception at UCLA
after tickets to the event were offered by the Local
in "The Thread". Six panelists: Sandy Powell ("Carol"
and "Cinderella"), Jenny Beavan ("Mad Max: Fury
Road"), Paco Delgado ("The Danish Girl"), Suttirat
Anne Larlarb ("Steve Jobs”), Jaqueline West ("The
Revenant"), and Michael Wilkenson ("Joy") answered
questions from Deborah Nadoolman Landis, the
moderator. Clips from the 2016 films that had been
nominated for "Best Costumes" were shown,
followed by a Q & A with the audience. Attendees
were then invited to a lavish reception where they
could informally chat with the individual designers.

A LITTLE THIs, A LITTLE THAT . . .
limits of the 30 mile filming zone crews encounter exotic locations, in close proximity to their homes and neighborhoods,
far removed from the long gone studio backlots. The pictures
have grown and we have grown with them. Taking nothing
away from the members that came before us and fought to
create and sustain our industry, our craft and our Local. Our
current membership is more varied, more diverse and possibly
better suited to the current ongoing demands of our jobs than
our predecessors. We are not only adapting to keep up with
emerging technology. We strive to be ahead of the curve.
Leading as we confront these new issues. We must and we will
prosper and grow stronger. Always prepared and ready for any
and all new challenges as we practice our craft to show others
we are more than mere “dressers.” That the skills we master
are vast and varied. Looking toward the future and whatever
means to present entertainment comes next. We will continue
to create and tell stories by costumes. We will be there ready,
willing and able for any challenge. The pictures might have
gotten small but we have not.
THE PICTURES THAT GOT SMALL
We all have favorite movies. Movies that speak to us and resonate long after seeing. They can be our favorite for delivering
a message or just delivering sheer entertainment. My all-time
#1 is Billy Wilder’s 1950 classic – Sunset Boulevard. I first
enjoyed its pleasures as a teenager. Repeated viewings at
revival houses and on television only increased my enjoyment
of this tale of Hollywood. On my first visit to this fabled
metropolis Hollywood USA. I chose to forgo the usual touristy
territory of Hollywood & Vine or the Chinese theater. I
wanted to see the Paramount gate because of its use in the
picture. Little did I realize that the alley, the hero William
Holden walks down on his way to the gate was part of the old
Western Costume Company facility on Melrose Avenue, an
alley I would venture down numerous times while employed
there. One of those strange coincidences when life imitates
art. Like many classic films this one has many memorable
lines. One of them spoken by the faded movie queen, Norma
Desmond, played by Gloria Swanson is “IT’S THE PICTURES
THAT GOT SMALL.” In the context of the story, it signifies the
change from the ethereal star icons of the 20’s to the more
realistic stars of the 50’s up to those of the current day.
Do yourself a favor and catch this true cinema classic the next
time it is up. Be it on television, on demand, streaming or better yet on a movie palace screen. You’ll find humor and
humanity in this tale of tinsel town. Decide for yourself –
‘’One of those wonderful people out there in the dark,’’ if the
pictures truly did get small. One thing that requires no decision. We have not diminished. We are bigger, better and still
the best. WE ARE 705.
Following this idea, the line can be interpreted to mean
movies no longer fulfill that other worldly larger than life kick
they delivered when they were the world’s premier visual
entertainment. At the time of its release the industry was
being buffeted by shrinking audiences, the advent of television
and the divestment of the theatre chains. This was long before
cable, streaming, home video and other emerging platforms
came forth. It can be argued that current technologies developed since, such as IMAX and 3D, still give off that visceral
kick. The truth is that although the entertainment model has
evolved and changed. Its reach hasn’t gotten smaller; on the
contrary it has only gotten bigger. Entertainment is available
in any size from an iPOD to IMAX - a case where size truly
doesn’t matter. Audiences are still thrilled and moved. These
various opportunities have allowed our industry and our craft
to grow larger to fulfill the ongoing demand for more entertainment.

Call to Order:
Sisters Melissa Kidd and Sarah Basta called the meeting of the
Vision quest Committee to order at 3:05 p.m.

Old Business:
Each of the three groups that were formed in February presented their category plans to the group at large. Discussion
was delayed until all plans were heard.

After the presentations, there was a detailed reading of each category plan and, following discussion and revision, a vote was
taken for each plan. All ten plans were approved unanimously.

Over the next month we will compile these plans into the master presentation. Committee members will look for a draft to
edit in a couple of weeks.

rather than calling the Local for assistance. Members are urged

CALL TO ORDER/APPROVAL OF MINUTES
President Nickolaus Brown called the monthly meeting of the
Executive Board to order at 11:03 a.m. and asked for approval
of the Executive Board meeting minutes of February 6, &
February 9, 2016 with the correction, under New Business,
second paragraph down that should read “voice but no vote”.
The minutes were approved unanimously.
The next Executive Board meeting is scheduled for Saturday,
April 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
President Brown reported on behalf of the Comic-Con Committee the idea of a temporary 705 logo for social media purposes for the upcoming Comic-Con event, giving 4 options.
Brother John Van Hout moved to use the present Local 705
graphics for Comic-Con. The motion was 2nd. Discussion
ensued. The motion failed after a tie breaker vote 4-3.
Glamour Gowns
and Suit Up
Brother Van Hout moved to use Graphic number 2 for the
Comic-Con event, the motion was 2nd and failed 6-1.
Glamour Gowns and Suit Up
will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center
on Saturday, April 9, 2016 by C.A.S.A.

Brother Bob Iannaccone moved to use a combination Graphic
number 2A, the motion was 2nd and passed 6-1.

ASST. BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVE’S REPORT
The formal wear and accessories are provided
free of charge to young women and men ages 15+
in the Los Angeles foster care system.
Sister Bethany Jane Bohatila went over the Local’s financial
statements with the Executive Board as is customary every month.
Sister Bohatila went over expenditures with the Executive Board
and found the Local to be doing well.
Glamour Gowns and Suit Up is an event produced and
managed by a dedicated committee who volunteer
their time and resources. Members of I.A.T.S.E. Motion
Picture Costumers Local 705, Costume Designers Guild
Local 892, and Theatrical Wardrobe Union Local 768
donate their time to help each young person find the
perfect attire. A team of tailors and seamstresses
volunteer for the day. A volunteer who serves as a
“personal shopper” assists each young person.
Volunteers are needed from both Finished and
Custom Made Costumer classifications.
Sister Bohatila presented a donation request from one member
for the benefit of another member. Executive Board members
had legal concerns. Sister Bohatila moved we table this until
the Local’s lawyer could be consulted. The motion was 2nd and
passed 7-1.
BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVE’S REPORT
Brother Bob Iannaccone reported that business is busy with
pilots starting up. The Local 705 needs Supervisors, especially
for Tier-1 projects. Waivers for qualified Journeypersons who
are interested in becoming Supervisors will be considered on a
case by case basis to fill Tier-1 needs.

Sister Bohatila passed out copies of the office staff ’s job duties
to the Executive Board. The Executive Board requested time to
read them and that the topic be added to the next meeting’s

Motion Picture Costumers Local 705 is pleased to
announce that it will again award four merit based
scholarships to children of Local 705 members.
Martha worked at The Ice Follies when
she became a member in 1975.
Among her other projects is Beetlejuice.
She retired in 1975.
The $2,000 Al Di Pardo Scholarship for High School
Seniors requires that the applicant will be attending an accredited four year college or university
next fall.

The $2,000 Al Di Pardo College Continuation
Scholarship requires that the student has completed
one or more semesters or quarters of full time
studies at an accredited college, university or
community college and will be continuing their
education at an accredited four year academic
institution in pursuit of a baccalaureate degree
next fall.
Born in Mexico and a member since 1951.
Miguel began his career at The Ice Capades.
His credits include The Love Boat, Jag & Hotel.
The $2,500 Sandra Berke Jordan Memorial Scholarship will be open to all applicants for the two Al
