Five historic settings,157 rooms
and suites
The Clubhouse, (Main Hotel) designed by Charles Alexander,
reflects the ambience and tastes of Club members of over a
century ago. From cozy, well appointed rooms that were
servants’ quarters to spacious suites that accommodated
the original members, with 56 rooms, the Club offers today’s
traveler the amenities expected in four star accommodations.
The Annex, built to the specifications of premier architect
Charles Alling Gifford in 1901, faces the croquet greensward.
Its spacious 54 rooms and suites, beautifully furnished, have
excellent views. Several rooms and suites have sun rooms with
windows that open to the lawns and river.
Sans Souci (meaning "without care"), once the apartment
accommodations of J.P. Morgan, and several other Club
members, is also an outstanding example of Gifford’s
architecture. The building’s interior details reflect the
Victorian preferences for massive staircases, leaded art glass,
and lofty ceilings. Many of the 24 rooms on the first three
floors have working fireplaces.
Crane Cottage, completed in 1917, one of the hotel’s two
cottages of Italian Renaissance style architecture,
was once the island retreat of bathroom fixture magnate
Richard T. Crane, Jr. Its classic lines and detailing have
been carefully preserved during extensive renovation in
2001. The entire structure embraces a central fountain
courtyard with arcaded loggia. The formal sunken garden
is ideal for picturesque weddings for up to 300 people.
Crane Cottage has 13 rooms and suites and may be rented
to a group or individually.
Cherokee, Built in 1904 for Dr. George F. Shrady,
one of the foremost surgeons in the country, Cherokee
takes its name from the lush gardens of Georgia's state
flower, the Cherokee rose, that originally surrounded
the residence. Its Italian renaissance style of architecture
and 10 distinctly appointed guest rooms make it ideal
for smaller wedding parties, family reunions and
corporate retreats.
