Hennepin Reads: Jonathan Odell
Local Author Series Continues! Thursday, June 18 at 7 PM
Join author Jonathan Odell for an evening of
Hennepin Reads. These experiences invite author to
not only read from their work but to also reflect on
how its writing shaped their own spiritual journey.
Jonathan Odell is the best selling author of The
Healing and a new rendering of his debut novel, The
View from Delphi, entitled Miss Hazel and the Rosa
Parks League. Mr. Odell will share from this new look
at his story set in pre-Civil Rights Mississippi. The story
is of two young mothers, Hazel and Vida - one wealthy
and white and the other poor and black-who have
only two things in common: the devastating loss of
their children, and a deep and abiding loathing for
one another.
Jonathan Odell was born and raised in Mississipi, growing up in the
institutional segregation of a small town. In college he sold The Ebony Pictorial
History of Black American door to door in black neighborhoods across the South
while the Klan tried to discourage him. He now lives in Minnesota.
Hennepin Apparel Returns
After the successful fall sale, the Hospitality Team presents
a new spring sale of apparel for all ages and a few other
items, too. Proceeds benefit the many ministries of
Outreach United.
Classic fleece vests and hoodies from the fall sale return,
and there will be new items, too, such as polos, golf shirts,
windbreakers, aprons, and t-shirts in a wide array of colors (suitable to wear at
Pride, National Night Out, Vacation Bible School, and other summer event we
have coming up).
The sale will run for three weeks in May (order in time for Mother’s Day and
graduation) and items will arrive in June (just in time for Father’s Day).
Young Adult Spring BBQ

Save the date and look for details on this annual
spring time tradition of getting together for a meal,
games, and relaxation. An RSVP and pot luck list will come out on the young adult

March 29 Church Conference Report – Bobbie Keller
Members of the Hennepin community gathered at a brief church conference
March 29 unanimously approved a proposal from the Koinonia Board of Directors
and the Hennepin Board of Trustees to sell 10 acres of unused Koinonia property.
Proceeds of the proposed sale will go to replenish Koinonia’s maintenance fund,
which paid for the remodeling of the residential building Columbine into
Woodhaven Lodge last year. The new Woodhaven Lodge has updated amenities
and is suitable for smaller groups.
The property is part of 40 acres known as the Wilderness 40, which Hennepin
Avenue United Methodist Church purchased in 1988. While 30 of those acres,
which were formerly pastureland, now include scenic walking trails often used by
Koinonia guests, the remaining 10 acres, formerly farm field, are unused.
Koinonia’s maintenance fund is money set aside for perpetual upkeep of
Koinonia facilities.

Farewell Daniel Pederson
They say the only constant is change and there are some
changes we welcome more than others. After 8-1/2 years of
service to the congregation in various capacities (most recently
as Director of Communications), Daniel Pederson is leaving
Hennepin at the end of the month. This is change that saddens
us for Daniel has come to be such an important part of the
Hennepin community. It is also change that heightens our
gratitude for all the many ways Daniel’s work has shaped the
identity and life of our congregation. You may have seen his work in the Sunday
bulletins, newsletters, HQ, seasonal devotionals, website, outdoor sign, or even
musical compositions in worship.
As Daniel starts a new position at Roseville Lutheran Church in May, he goes
with our prayers and heartfelt thanks. We pray God’s blessings on his new
endeavors and give thanks for his time with us. Thank you, Daniel!
Parent-Child Relationships
Compass 180 Annual Dinner
Led by Dr. Gene Roehlkepartain
11:00 AM, May 3 and 17
Prison Ministry Celebration – 6:00 PM, May 13
All parents want to have good
relationships with their kids. New
national research on parents with kids
ages 3 to 13 unpacks what happens in
parent-child relationships that make a
difference in kids’ learning, growth,
and development. Reflect on your own
relationships with your kids, and
identify ways your relationship is growing and changing
as kids grow up. You’ll also learn about a new Search
Institute website that’s focused on strengthening family
relationships, particularly as kids enter middle school
and adolescence.
May 3: What’s working – and what’s not – in your
relationships with your kids? May 17: Do you need a
power-sharing agreement with your kids?
This is a two-part series, but you don’t have to attend
both to benefit. Parents with kids of all ages are
welcomed! The sessions will be led by Dr. Gene
Roehlkepartain, a Hennepin member and vice president
of research and development at Search Institute, which
conducted the national study.
Compass 180's annual recognition event celebrates the
work of our scholarship recipients. A light dinner is
followed by an inspirational program of stories. To sign
up, please email [email protected] or
see Deb Roberts, Rita Lyell or Larry Olson at church.
Peace Through Justice Forum
11:00 AM, May 17 – Palestine/Israel from the Inside
The Middle East continues to explode.
The conflict in Palestine- Israel
continues after 67 plus years. This
forum aims to share how the
occupation of the Palestinian Territories
effects both Palestinians and Israelis
with documented history, information
and resources in printed form, some
verbal input, and ample time for discussion. Dwight
Haberman, a Hennepin member, has traveled to the
Holy Land nine times and has, with his wife Debra Ricci,
lived and volunteered in the West Bank for 13 months.
Among many contacts was the opportunity to meet with
Yasser Arafat. Dwight continues to receive current
information from Palestine and Israel. Find out what you
can do to promote peace there.

A hint of Spring has Minnesotans
feeling giddy. Yet, while the weight of
winter may be lifting, the world can
still feel heavy on our shoulders.
Breathing helps. Beauty helps. Lighten
your load relaxing with an hour of jazz
and poetry. Rest in the images and the
music. Re-attune to the natural
rhythms of breath and heartbeat.
Remarkable Generosity
Jack Fistler, Legacy Giving
“Remarkable” may be the best word
to describe the love and legacies
provided by Hennepin members over
the years through their estate gifts. We
benefit each day, often more than we
realize, from their heartfelt and
generous planning. In 2014 alone
Hennepin received estate proceeds
from four individuals totaling nearly
$200,000. We remember with deep gratitude Edith
Perren, Marjeanne Sunde, Fern Sahr and John Coe. Their
gifts were directed to Foundation and Trustees
unrestricted funds, Koinonia building project, Foundation
Scholarship Fund, and the Foundation’s Music Ministry
Fund and Raines Fund for seniors ministries. That’s
remarkable generosity; we are blessed by their gifts.
Each legacy gift is a story, a testament of faith in God’s
blessings and in Hennepin’s future. To explore how you
may leave an imprint on Hennepin, contact Jack Fistler,

Sofas & Spokes
Hennepin Marketplace
Do you have an unused adult
bike in your garage? Do you
have furniture you are no
longer using? The Downtown
Congregations to End
Homelessness invites you to
donate Adult Bikes and gently used furniture for our
neighbors in need!
“Sofas & Spokes” was established in 2009 by the
Downtown Congregations to End Homelessness Direct
Service Providers (DCEH/DSP) committee. The Direct
Service Provider congregations (St. Olaf Catholic,
Central Lutheran, Basilica of Saint Mary, and the Dignity
Center of Hennepin Church) serve those in need with
prayer, listening, and a variety of services including
furniture and bicycles to get to work or search for work.
The St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store serves as the
distribution partner for the furniture component of
“Sofas & Spokes” – the congregations provide eligible
Participants (who cannot afford furniture) vouchers which
are taken to the store to be redeemed for items such as
sofas, dressers, and dining room table/chairs.
Project Lifecycle serves as the distribution partner for
the bicycle component of “Sofas & Spokes” –
congregations interview Participants, asses their need
for a bicycle, and distribute bicycles along with a helmet
and lock at one of the DCEH/DSP bicycle distribution
events. Participants also receive a bicycle safety/
maintenance training to better understand rules of the
road and learn basic repair skills.
Your used gently used furniture and adult bikes can be
given for good! Donate them on Saturday, May 16th at
Hennepin Church Parking Lot between 9 AM – 12 Noon.
Adult bikes only. All donations are tax deductible.
Come see and purchase things
different - some exotic, and some
familiar - all beautiful. All sales impact
the lives of many near and afar. It’s a
marketplace of craft and goodies from across the world
offered by the Outreach Ministries of Hennepin. Make
sure to wander through Carlson Hall before and after
worship to peruse the offerings. Be sure to buy
something in support of the united outreach ministries
of Hennepin that support the less fortunate in

The Birth of a Care Team
Mark Peterson
“I want to let you know how
this meeting came to be. We
know that there are folks out
there who are doing visitation.
They see people they know,
and neighbors, and that is a
huge blessing to the Church and the staff. Now the stars
have aligned and we are finally getting intentional about
training and mobilizing lay visitors.” Pastor Sally
Johnson offered this introduction at the first Care Team
class in at Hennepin Church. Twenty-one students
gathered in classroom 203 to learn about the art of
visiting shut-ins. Two were from Mindekirken, four were
from Silver Lake UMC and fifteen were from Hennepin.
Pastor Sally added, “Part of the alignment of the stars is
that we have Mark Peterson on our staff who has done
this training in many places.”
Care Team training will focus on “Bad Things and
Silver Linings,” “The Are of Listening,” “The Nuts and
Bolts of Visiting” and “Life Transitions.” When the
classes wrap-up in early May each of these visitors will
be “buddied-up” with two to four of Hennepin’s 100+
shut-ins. Their job will be to maintain regular contact,
deliver communion, bring worship folders, meet family
members and make referrals to Hennepin’s ministers
and others when needed. Care Team members will be our Congregation’s eyes
and ears in homes, care facilities and hospitals all
around the Metro Area. Watch for a consecration service
later this month. If you know of a shut-in who could
benefit from a visit - contact Mark Peterson or Sally
Johnson. We pray God’s blessing on our Care Team’s
important work.

Thank Offering Promotion
Thank Offering to Bloom in June!
We’re Switching Things Up!
For many years now, the annual World Thank Offering,
sponsored by United Methodist Women, has taken
place during a Sunday in November. Its placement
during the season of Thanksgiving has enabled us to
pause and reflect on our blessings and share our gifts
with women, children, and youth around the world.
We are very thankful for the congregation’s support
over the years. However, as you know, November is also
the season for the church’s annual Stewardship
campaign, a very busy time in the life of the church.
Considering the amount of “asks” the congregation
receives during the calendar year, and trying to create
more balance, Hennepin’s United Methodist Women
agreed to move the 2015 Thank Offering to June 7. As
many of us sow seeds for new
growth in our gardens so, too,
will the Thank Offering enable
us to grow opportunities for
education, social justice,
maternal health and more, for
women, children, and youth
both in our neighborhoods,
and around the world.

Your Gift Makes a Difference
Thanks to the generous support of the Hennepin
congregation in November, the 2014 Thank Offering
collected over $4,600. These gifts, a significant part of
our overall budget, enable Hennepin’s United Methodist
Women to support a variety of programs and ministries
that benefit women, children, and youth in meaningful
and life-impacting ways both nationally and
internationally. In addition, here are some of the ways
our ministry impacts those in our neighborhoods:
• Simpson Housing Services
Educational Advocacy Program
• HAUMC Parish Aid Fund
• UMCOR Sager Brown
• Groveland Food Shelf
• Joyce Preschool
• Sandwiches for the Dignity Center
• Ain Dah Yung Center
For at-risk Native American youth
• Remodeling project at Emma Norton Services
The Thank Offering is one of the pillars of support that
enable the work of United Methodist Women. Thank
you!
