A JOYFUL CONNECTED SPIRITUAL PRACTICE IS
AVAILABLE TO ALL OF US, AND WE NEED TO DO IT TOGETHER.
Dear JCOH Families,
I hope that everyone is well and enjoying the summer wherever you may be.
I have spoken with you about the coming year, and shared our plan to move Religious School from
Sunday mornings to SATURDAY MORNINGS. Learning will still take place at the same time from
9:15am—12:15pm.
It is the shared vision of all of us here at the JCOH to build a vibrant communal Shabbat practice,
where social action, Jewish values, prayer, and spiritual play are core pillars; where Shabbat
becomes a “Sanctuary in time” and we become the architects.
To continue to cultivate this path we are turning to our holidays and festivals as a guide. Each
week Shabbat offers the opportunity to celebrate as a community and offer gratitude to all that is
holy.
AS
A COMMUNITY OUR JOURNEY AND
PATH IS TO BUILD A
H EBREW ,
S HABBAT
PRACTICE THAT IS FULL OF
SONG , EDUCATION , SOCIAL ACTION , ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND MORE .
Families will have an opportunity to join in the Shabbat morning services and see their children
begin to take an active role in prayer. While students will not be participating in the whole service
they will be exposed to various parts of prayer each week as well as participating in building their
own junior congregation.
I will be sharing more information with all of you as the summer progresses. Please reach out to
me with any questions you might have. I want to be sensitive to everyone’s needs and I am ready to
help in any way I can. We don’t want to leave any family behind as we make our transition.
***As an added bonus this year, as soon as you register for the next year your children will be
given an online subscription to ROSETTA STONE HEBREW, which they can work on over the summer
and continue to use throughout the year.
I feel blessed to be part of the Jewish Center of the Hamptons community and to be able to work
alongside Rabbi Zimmerman and Cantor Stein—such wonderful mentors and colleagues. May we
continue to grow in the grove together.
Blessings,
Rabbi Hanniel Levenson

My Father’s Paradise:
A Son’s Search for His Family’s Past”
by Author Ariel Sabar
BOOK
SYNOPSIS: In a remote corner of the world, forgotten for nearly three thousand years, lived an enclave of Kurdish
Jews so isolated that they still spoke Aramaic, the language of Jesus. Mostly illiterate, they were self-made mystics
and gifted storytellers and humble peddlers who dwelt in harmony with their Muslim and Christian neighbors in the
mountains of northern Iraq. To these descendants of the Lost Tribes of Israel, Yona Sabar was born.
Yona's son Ariel grew up in Los Angeles, where Yona had become an esteemed professor, dedicating his career to
preserving his people’s traditions. Ariel wanted nothing to do with his father’s strange immigrant heritage—until he
had a son of his own. Ariel Sabar brings to life the ancient town of Zakho, discovering his family’s place in the
sweeping saga of Middle-Eastern history. This powerful book is an improbable story of tolerance and hope set in
what today is the very center of the world’s attention.
ROSH CHODESH AV
Rosh Chodesh is a women’s spiritual group led by Cantor Stein. Rosh Chodesh is the first day
of every month in the Jewish calendar. It is marked by the appearance of the New Moon.
