The program involved children working closely with respected Aboriginal artist Chris Edwards and Simon Robinson from The Rug Collection to create a collection of exclusive designer rugs. The project facilitated a cultural knowledge exchange through engaging disadvantaged Aboriginal youth together with Elders to learn about Aboriginal culture through storytelling and hands on arts workshops. The budding young designers have developed concept designs inspired by the Elders stories with the best six designs developed into a limited edition of rugs for exclusive sale through The Rug Collection. This collection is called “Julu Wajaar” (One Earth in the Gumbaynggir language). The designs encompass features and stories of indigenous heritage and culture that move from the coast through to the Australian desert.
