March 2009 There are many thank you’s in this issue. So many more kind people have stepped forward with offers of help over the last couple of months, whether it’s with a regular donation or subscription, items for the charity shop, tins of Whiskas cat food for the hedgehogs, fleece blankets, fundraising at work, people who turn up with armfuls of newspapers and donations of cat food (sorry, I don’t even know your names), the Ebay community who are always there to willingly sponsor weeks of care for very poorly hedgehogs that need months of treatment (including one kind lady all the way from Australia!) With the support of so many kind people behind us, this Charity can’t help but survive. Thank you to everyone. We are delighted to announce that Nick Park CBE the award-winning creator of Wallace and Gromit is to be the Patron of our Charity. We are thrilled that he has accepted our invitation. As the Patron of our Charity he was the one and only choice for us, not just because of his obvious love of animals, but also because we could not wish for a more genuine person to fill that role. We are both privileged and honoured to have his support. Sponsors needed please Never before have we had anyone wanting to raise funds for us through sponsorship of an event. Now we have two together! The first is Anne, Phil and Emma Woodworth. They will be attempting to walk the 80+ miles Dales Way walk from Ilkley in West Yorkshire to the shores of Lake Windermere in Cumbria on 24th May 2009 and all in aid of our charity. They need all the support they can get to complete this walk, so please help by sponsoring them. They can also be sponsored online and you can find out more about their walk at www.sandem.co.uk The second is Michelle Porter who has entered the Coniston standard distance Triathlon—a continuous race which incorporates a 1500m open water swim in Coniston Water, followed by a 40Km ride and then a challenging 10Km run. She hopes to compete to help raise funds for our charity through sponsorship. Please give Anne, Phil and Emma, and Michelle your support. Further details of both these events are included with this newsletter. Empty shop premises now urgently needed. The time has now come where we need our own Charity Shop and we are looking to secure empty shop premises in either the Poulton, Bispham, Cleveleys or Thornton area. This will hopefully be a valuable source of regular income for the Charity. We only need a small shop, so if anyone knows of an empty shop with reasonable rent, I would be very grateful if you please contact me. Thank you. Thank you to Yvonne Ashman all the way from Victoria in Australia who is now a regular supporter of our charity. She very kindly donated several weeks of care for Frankie our three-legged hedgehog in memory of all the animals that died in the Victorian bushfires. What a lovely gesture. Yvonne says: “In Australia the situation for many native creatures is dire and the bushfires have destroyed over 1 million native and domestic animals... but little Sam the koala has become a symbol of hope. Fortunately there are many vets willing to donate time and medical supplies, animal welfare agencies and shelters, all working towards rehabilitating the animals found... it is a massive undertaking”. You would think that the people of Victoria have enough to cope with at present, but despite all that devastation, Yvonne has reached out over thousands of miles to help one little hedgehog. I find that quite remarkable. Sam the Koala with firefighter David Tree. The Forum is now back online after some ‘technical difficulties’. You can now access it via the website. We are now also on Facebook! A book has been published entitled 'A Prickly Affair - My life with Hedgehogs' written by Hugh Warwick. Some of you may remember when Hugh came to visit me in September 2007 to see first hand the work we do here and to try and find out exactly WHY we do what we do for these animals. Sure enough, Lancashire Hedgehog Care gets a mention in his book well actually 4 whole pages!! It’s a funny, eccentric and moving story of one mans quest to understand our deep-rooted affection for these littleunderstood animals. The book is very well written and I think is certainly worth a read. It’s available from Amazon or any major retailer. A big thank you to Anne Woodworth and to the pupils of Baines School, Poulton for all their fundraising efforts in helping us purchase new floorliners for the incubators. The old ones were quite dangerous for the hedgehogs as they had become brittle and split, but now we have been able to replace them. Thank you Baines! A huge thank you goes to Sheila Clementson and members of The Lady Freemasons, Sesame Lodge No. 26 for the wonderful donation of a cheque for £400 which was presented to us in January. Thank you to Liz and to everyone who regularly brings us cat food and items for the hedgehogs. Also to everyone that brought us items to sell in the Charity Shop. Thanks also to Ann Hedley at Longview Animal Centre and Ann and Sharon from Cats Paws for their very kind donations of tins of cat food which we were very grateful for. Thank you also to John Isles for donations made. Are you able to receive your newsletter via email instead of snail mail?
