Hitting a ball from a tee
is nothing new for baseball
players, but as a sport itself, T-ball has been around
only since the 1960s.
Baseball players used
tees for years to help develop their swing during
“live-arm” games, which
allowed them to practice
alone or in a setting where
a coach could closely monitor the batter’s technique.
In the 1960s, Dayton
Hobbs, an elementary
school principal in Bagdad,
Fla. was coaching a group
of 14- and 15-year-old
baseball players on their
swings when he noticed a
group of younger children
outside of the fence watching the practice.
Hobbs’ older players
were hitting the balls off
tees in practice to hone
their skills and Hobbs realized the tee could be a
great equalizer for those
with the desire to play but
time.
It wasn’t long before
the game caught on at
U.S. Navy bases across the
United States, as well as in
Europe and Japan.
The sudden success of
the game caused Hobbs
to apply for a patent on
the name and the game in
1970, which happened to
be the same year that the
first T-Ball World Series
was held.
He also won the patent
on the four-ounce official
orange T-ball baseball.
The official rule book,
still in use today, is amended annually and reminds
the adults of a fact that
the children already know:
“this is nothing more than
a game of children’s baseball.”
It reminds parents and
other adults to not put
pressure on the kids playing the game, but rather let
them enjoy it to the best of
their abilities.
Good Luck Teams!

the lack of skill to hit a
moving ball.
Hobbs soon began promoting the game extolling
the values that T-ball offered, such as:
• inexpensive to play
• readily available help
• parent cooperation
• can be played in small
areas as opposed to large
baseball fields
• minimum equipment
requirement (adding only
a tee to the game of baseball)
• taught youngsters the
basics of baseball
• provided fun for both
boys and girls
His promotion of the
game led to him writing the first official T-ball
baseball rule book.
The game soon gained
worldwide
attention,
thanks to his association
with the United States
Navy and the popularity
of the game in Pensacola,
Fla., which was a hotbed
