Our first event of the month is
the September 5th open Blues jam at
Ranelli’s. Open to everyone and free, so
stop by between 7pm – 11pm and hear
some great Blues. Musicians of all ages
and skill levels are welcome to come
and sit in.
The MCBS is again organizing two fall
Phelan Park events with the support of
perhaps Birmingham’s best known rib
joint Dreamland. On September 14 at
2:30pm, local favorite Frank Ranelli and
his Big Daddy’s New Band will take over
the park for three hours of big band
Blues and more. It’s sure to be a great
show and it’s free. We will have a $10
tee shirt special, so buy now while we
have a good selection of sizes and if you
can’t make the show, you can buy them
online at our website.
The Blues Hall of Fame Induction
Ceremony at Henderson’s in Midfield is
the same afternoon. I hate that, but we
were not aware of that event when we
made the Phelan Park arrangements
several weeks ago. I have had to make
several hard choices this year on which
event to attend where there were
conflicts and I wanted to go to both
events. Guess the good news is that
there is a lot of good Blues around the
Ham.
On Friday September 19th City
Vineyard is bringing Intrepid Artists’,
Edward David Anderson to town and
it’s a free concert. His music is perhaps
classed as more Americana than Blues.
Regardless he is a great songwriter and
acoustic guitarist worth catching as he
passes through town, so think about
putting him on your calendar. http://
edwarddavidanderson.com
I certainly hope I don’t have a conflict
on September 25 when the Experience
Hendrix Tour featuring Buddy Guy, Eric
Johnson, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne
Shepherd. Chris Layton, Doyle Bramhall
and MORE comes to the Alys Stephens
Theater.
We would welcome reviews of any
good Blues shows you go to. Do submit
them and we will happily publish them.
Happy bluzin’ .

Elvin Bishop
Can’t Even Do Wrong Right
Label: Alligator Records
Alligator Records welcomes the
return of Elvin Bishop to the label. On
the title track of his new album, Can’t
Even Do Wrong Right, the legendary
blues guitarist, songwriter and singer
spins a tale of a dumb a** dude who
gets caught because his own dumb
decisions. Five of the songs are Bishop
originals, including “Let Your Woman
Have Her Way”, on which Bishop’s
friend Mickey Thomas sings the lead
(This is the first time Thomas, the exJefferson Starship singer, has recorded
with Bishop since he provided vocals
on Bishop’s classic hit “Fooled Around
And Fell In Love”). Nope, that wasn’t
Elvin singing on the classic, in fact,
when asked about his vocals, he
stated, “my singing has made me a
better songwriter”. An outstanding

Blues hall of fame induction ceremony
On Sunday September 14th, 2014
at 2pm there will be a Blues concert
and induction ceremony of Alabama
Blues artists and ambassadors of the
Blues. The venue is Henderson’s in
Midfield, Alabama (on the Bessemer
Super Hwy at the corner of Aaron
Aronov Drive in Midfield, across
the road from the Burlington Coat
Factory store).
Birmingham’s SharBaby was
inducted into the Blues Hall of
Fame as a Master Blues Artist in
2012. SharBaby and her husband
Jim Newport worked to identify
appropriate Alabamian’s and to find
the deserving Alabama artists and
supporters of the Blues recognized
by the Blues Hall of Fame. Gaining
approval for several Birmingham
area artists, they organized the
first Alabama induction ceremony
and hope it will become an annual
event.
Some of the artists to be
inducted this time are Willie King,
Leon Atkins, Earl Guitar Williams,
Debbie Bond, Ernest Sykes, BJ
Miller, Clarence Bluesman Davis,
Elnora Spencer, Johnnie Nathan,
Terry Harmonica Bean, Caroline
Shines, Lee Brown, Birmingham
George Conner, Rosco Robinson,
Dr. GB Burt, Curtis Files, Johnny
Shines, Jerry Boogie McCain and Eddie
Kirkland.
The Blues Hall of Fame is a “free
and open to everyone’, international
organization, consisting of
performing Blues Artists and Friends,
which believes that the nominating
and inducting of Blues Artists should
be open, transparent and conducted
by other Blues artists, fans and the
general public.
They want each region to have a
say as to who should be inducted,
and feel they are big enough to
hold every Blues Artist that people
think should be inducted. They
have created a very different Hall of
Fame, which has various levels of
induction. Legendary Blues Artist is
the highest award. Next is Master
Blues Artist, and finally their very
favorite level, Great Local Blues
Artist. This level system allows
most performing Blues Artists to be
included, and to possibly advance
to the next higher level. They
feel Great Local Blues Artists are
the “True Blue”, “In the Trenches”
“Unsung Heroes”, who dedicate
their entire life learning, practicing

for all of his help.
I’m from Norfolk, Virginia and my
mom was fourteen years old when she
had me and my grandfather was devastated and he thought that she was just
like a kid and a kid can’t raise a kid, so
he took me and raised me to his own
and my mom moved away to New York,
so he remarried and had children and I
fit right in there, there are five of us. No
one outside the immediate family knew
I was a grandchild, they thought I was
one of his children and I never knew
that I looked exactly like my grandfather until I saw my mom and my mom
looked exactly like my grandfather, and
then I figured out no wonder people
are always saying I looked more like him
than his own kids. My grandfather was a
musician and he played keyboards and
wrote songs and we started a family
group. What with me being the free
spirited one, I used to dance and all so
he grabbed me and put me in front, so
I was the lead singer for the little family
church group and we called ourselves
The Tucker Family. There were three
of us and I was about nine, and my
brother he hated it; he would stand on
stage and he hated it and he was about
eight at that time and my sister was
twelve. My grandfather wrote the songs
for us to sing and he played the organ
and piano and we would sing and I
loved it. So that’s how I got started, was
in church and when I turned fourteen I
got my voice trained for the first time.
I just did whatever they told me to do.
I didn’t know anything about blues
and stuff like that until later. Back then
I was doing what everybody else was
doing like old Johnnie Taylor songs
and Betty Wright and Shirley Brown
stuff; my mom was into that and who
would have thought that as I grew older
I would be dealing with those people
in that circuit. That’s the type of stuff I
grew up listening to.
I got married and had children and in
1998 I got my first manager. I was living
in Jacksonville, Florida and before that
I was not singing at all, although I may
sing for a church here and there but I
wasn’t in the industry at all. I knew I had
a talent but I didn’t know what to do
with it or where to go with it. My first
husband was military and we moved
from Norfolk to Jacksonville, Florida and
although I knew I can sing and I knew
I should be doing something, I didn’t
know where to start. So I was asking
people around at different clubs and I
got a manager. He was out of the city
next to me in Brunswick, Georgia and
he jumped right in and my first gig was
opening for Betty Wright and he put
me in some good places. Then, back in
1998 I got signed with a record label
out of New York called Boogie Down
Productions, and that’s kjnda how I
subsequently met Keithen, my present
husband. He was assigned to my first
project and we had never met up to
that point. We had known each other
for about ten years but never physically
met, we always talked business over the
phone. I would send him whatever he
needed from me and he was putting
together material and in the end we lost
contact. My connection with that record
label in New York came about as Keithen was here in Alabama, was signed
to them as a producer and I lived in Florida and they signed me as an artist. The
manager that I had, he knew Jack Allen
from the label and he had a showcase in
Cocoa Beach, Florida and my manager
took me there and said he wanted me
to get in front of the record label guy,
and I did and that’s how I got signed to
Boogie Down Productions. The sad part
about it was I signed to those guys for

ten years and they never did one thing,
not one project. So it went that I hadn’t
talked to Keithen for three years, and
one day in 2007 he called me out of the
blue and we talked for about five hours
trying to catch up, and we have been
together ever since. During that ten
years with that label I went to New York,
I worked on my project and worked on
different songs. I wrote my own stuff
and they had different producers and
stuff but nothing ever manifested from
it. I was still singing during this time but
doing things like weddings and stuff.
The sad part about it was when I signed
to the label they made me get rid of my
manger Charlie so I didn’t have anybody but them. So when I came back
home I wasn’t working because the
connections Charlie was getting me was
not there, and the label had promised
me the world. I never got to hear why
this all happened and the CEO of that
company died in 2009.
When Keithen and I hooked up we
got the first CD titled ‘Overcoming
Hurdles’ out in 2008. Hurdle was my
maiden name. That CD is all about how I
got over my first marriage. From that CD
came ‘Hip Swing’In Blues’ and it’s funny
because we didn’t have any direction
with that CD. We just put it out and on
that whole CD there was one traditional
blues song and that was ‘Hip Swing’In
Blues’ and that’s the number that took
off. It created a national line dance, it
sat on the charts for nine months at
number 4 and nobody knew who I was.
A lady from Myrtle Beach contacted me
on Facebook and asked me if I was the
same DieDra that sung ‘Hip Swing’In
Blues’ and she asked me to contact her
and you wonder how many DieDras she
went through to find me. I had moved
from Florida where I had lived for sixteen years and I moved to Birmingham,
Alabama to be with Keithen in 2007.
Several songs spun off that CD but it
was that song ‘Hip Swing’In Blues’ that
got me the DieDra, the blues diva type
name. It was an original number and I
wrote it one night and Keithen played
it on the guitar and that’s how that
came about. It created a line dance, and
how I found that out was I was messing
about on You Tube and I put the song’s
name in and these things pop up with
‘Hip Swing’In Blues’ and I’m thinking
8
Magic City Blues News september 2014
that I’ve got a song with that name and
it was this lady doing instruction on
how to dance to the song, and it was
me singing in the background and it
showed all these people doing what
she is telling them to do to ‘Hip Swinging Blues’, and I thought ‘Oh my God!’
So that’s how we knew that the song
did something and before that we had
no idea that the song was out there doing that.
After that we contacted the lady in
Myrtle Beach and she told us the song
was top of the charts there and she
told us we needed to get her some CDs
and quick. It was the shag beach music
area and it was the top of their charts.
I sent her thirty CDs and she sold them
in an hour and I sent her a whole load
more and work just started picking up
from there with that song. My career
just boomed and I didn’t know what to
do. Keithen was still working for Bobby
Rush as his guitarist, so I kinda just
stayed in the back. It was Bobby who
was the first person to give me a little
gig. We were in the dressing room with
him and he knew that I could sing and
he wasn’t ready to go on stage so he
asked me to open for him and we did
‘Rock Me Baby’ and the promoter she
came up to me after I had finished and
she started calling me a blues diva and
that’s where the title DieDra The Blues
Diva came from.
Different songs from the CD made
some noise on the chitlin’ circuit and we
went on to do the next CD which was
called ‘Living The Blues’. We thought
that as the traditional blues people like
us a lot, let’s focus on that world. That
CD came out in 2010 and it’s all original
material and my husband Keithen is
the producer. That CD I got four blues
award nominations for and I was the
only woman in every category. The
nominations were for blues album of
the year, a song called ‘Dance The Night
Away’, best original material and something else, there were four in all, and all
were from Beach Music Organisation/
Awards. We played at the Alabama Theatre in Myrtle Beach and they loved me.
Six years ago we signed with Joe
Douglas as manager – he also manages Frankie Beverly and Maze - and
we decided to do a CD for Joe to see,
and to show that we can do r&b too. So
that’s when we did the CD ‘Transformation Of Me’ and that came out in 2012.
That didn’t get us any attention at all,
but what did happen, it got the soul/
blues world’s attention and ‘Rent Man’
on that CD topped the charts. That was
amazing for me and we took ‘Rent Man’
and did my first video and we used
Poonanny and he was the rent man,
so it was kinda cool to have him in the
video and people knew who he was and
I got nominations for that song, and
it was in the charts on Blues Critic and
Boogie Report they all loved that song.
So that made me think I can do southern soul/ blues and so we have dabbled
in everything. You don’t realise how big
the blues world is until you’re doing it
and then you can do this and that, and
that’s considered as blues. We are just
trying to figure out where we fit in.
We have been to the International
Blues Challenge three times. The first
was in 2009 and we were just sent
there at that time by the Alabama Blues
Project and we were not competing at
that time. We didn’t place or anything.
In 2012 we went and made it to the
semi finals in the band category. In 2013
we had new band members and we
competed and we won the local band
competition to get us to the IBC in 2014,
and we went to Memphis again to compete and we did it for two nights with
two separate sets of judges. We made
it to the semi finals and we then made
it to the finals and this was out of 235
bands. One of the songs that helped us
get to the finals was ‘Under The Delta
Moon’, a song which we cut some years
ago. It was an amazing accomplishment and eventually Mr. Sipp won the
finals. It was tough but it has all helped
get us more respect. Alabama artists
don’t seem to get the credit, and we
wanted to make an impact and let folks
know that Alabama has blues talent. We
may go back to the IBCs as a duo act or
something. Our band is called DieDra
And The Ruff Pro Band.
We have just been to Europe this
year, which is good for us. I have also
put together a CD with Keithen named
‘Blues Babes Of Alabama’ that features a
lot of female blues artists such as Little
Kim Stewart, Elnora Spencer, myself, B.J.
Miller, Thessa Burgess, Debbie Bond,
Alabama Annie, Taylor McLain, Shar
Baby and Milyn Little. I just wanted to
reach back and help other artists.
I write all my own material as well,
and Keithen comes up with the music
concept and he plays something and he
asks me what I might hear to that and I
then start writing, so we tag team off of
each other. Keithen will tell me if something does not sound right. We have
our new CD that came out in March
2014 called ‘Divafied Bluz’ It’s all but
one original numbers. The cover is ‘Angel’ a number Aretha Franklin did some
years ago and that is one of Keithen’s
favourite songs; his eyes would tear
up every time he heard it so I always
thought that I wanted to do that song
for him. I put that song on SoundCloud
and Facebook. I would like to sign with
a label so as to get the marketing done
for that CD and a label could take us
from here to there. We have our own
studio at home where we record our
music. On the new CD I wrote ‘I Need A
Love’ and I did that for a blind girl. She
came in the studio and I wrote it for her
and I then I recorded it myself.

the 1950’s in Oklahoma,
everything was racially

“Old School” is one
track that really speaks to
a lot of us. In fact, I think
they could have given this
album that title and been
spot on, but the hilarious
cover art by musician/artist
Paul Thorn begs for Can’t
Even Do Wrong Right as
the title! Elvin’s Grammy
Award winning pal Charlie
Musselwhite gets down
with him on “Old School”
and “No More Doggin”. As
he tells Charlie at the end
of the track, “Superman
would have a hell of a time
finding a place to change
clothes these days”. Charlie &
Elvin really cut loose on “No
More Doggin“. Gentlemen,
please listen very carefully
to track number 4, “Let Your

only is it a killer tune, but
carries a timeless lesson,
hence the title! Throw in a
little cajun flavor with “Bo
Weevil” (written by Dave
Bartholomew & Fats Domino)
and the classic, “Hey-Ba-BaRe-Bop” and you’ve got an
album that hits it’s target at
every turn. As the ChicagoTimes stated, “It’s impossible
to not to like Bishop. He’s
always singing something
lowbrow and uplifting.” With
his distinctive blues slide

him, this album is sure to find
a place in the hearts and ears
of his many longtime fans,

scores of those just joining
Elvin’s never-ending party!
