West Fork Trail No. 94 (Lower Trail)
The West Fork Trail starts off on Osborne Road
(in Greer) and meanders along a small creek surrounded
by aspen and ponderosa pine. The trail gradually ascends
to Badger Pond, also known as Trail Springs Tank, which
is surrounded by raspberry bushes and wild roses. After
leaving the pond, the trail splits but joins again in less
than a quarter-of-a-mile. The most difficult part of the
trail starts at this point.
Once the trail joins, you begin climbing through
steep and rocky terrain. Once you have passed this area,
the trail levels out and you can see FR 87. This provides
another starting point where the trail connects to the
road. There are two dead-end roads off of FR 87 that
provide plenty of parking.

Potato Hollow Spring, a natural spring, is 2 miles
from Badger Pond and 4 miles from Sheeps Crossing.
One quarter of a mile from Sheeps Crossing, you
cross Route 273 to the West Fork of the Mount Baldy
Wilderness Trail. There are restrooms here and plenty
of parking.

Mount Baldy Trail No. 94
You may also hear people refer to this trail as the
West Fork Baldy Trail or the Sheep’s Crossing Trail for
the obvious reasons. It follows the west fork of the Little
Colorado River (LCR), and the trailhead is near the
Sheep’s Crossing Bridge.
There is a new parking area before you reach the
bridge coming from Greer or Sunrise on Hwy 273. There
are restrooms. You can also drive down to the bridge and
start from there. This will cut a good 1.25 miles off the
trail. You are going upstream on the west fork of the LCR.
Of the two trails up to the summit of Baldy this one is
a bit harder, steeper, and longer than the East Fork 95. If
you plan to go up one trail and down the other, this is the
best one to come down. There is water here for the dogs,
another hour or two stretch between springs.
Once again, this is an all day trip but so worth it. The
Baldy trails are great from mid-summer thru late fall. The
colors are spectacular. (Do not plan to hike the top half of
either of the Baldy trails during early spring, for the snow
pack covers the trail and you can get lost very easily.)
Get there early, by 9:00 am. Earlier is better. It is 7
miles each way. Most people plan to eat lunch at the top.
This hike takes the whole day. Beware of monsoons. There
can be lightning at the top. Dress in layers, as it is windy
and colder at the top. Pack a windbreaker. For many, this
is an annual event.

Large ponderosa pine towers overhead as you begin
hiking Fir Trail (one of the many trails that make up the
maze at this trail site). It is the first trail from the trailhead
and connects with Ponderosa and Juniper Trails. Large
stands of aspen with their bright green leaves and the cool
breeze make the hike an enjoyable exploration.
It would be very difficult to get lost on this trail —
to the north is Route 260, and to the southeast is Greer.
If you keep hiking to the west (where the sun sets in the
evening), you will end up at Pole Knoll Recreation Area.
Both of these trails are “hot spots” in the winter when
they are some of the best cross-country ski trails in the
White Mountains.
The 14.29 miles of trail is rated from Beginner to
Expert. Eight trails lead you through a thoroughfare
of lower elevation terrain like Fir Trail and a more
challenging trail such as Ponderosa. The rest of the
trails (except for Aspen) are rated Expert, which makes
this an excellent system of trails for the experienced
hiker or skier.

Pole Knoll (thus its name) is known for its maze of
various levels of ski trails. There are easy trails for the
beginning skier or more difficult trails for the amateur
skier who is up for a challenge. For the most daring
skier, Pole Knoll has its version of the black diamonds
and the best part— the scenery is spectacular!
Large aspen stands and giant ponderosa shadow
the snow-covered corridors as skiers glide across this
winter wonderland. The Pole Knoll Loop girdles the
maze as it glides past open meadow with panoramic
views to Sunrise and Mount Baldy. For the challengedeprived skier, Viewpoint Trail leads you up a
group of switch-backs to an outstanding view of the
surrounding area and a breathtaking return as you
descend almost 500 feet.
You don’t have to wait for winter to visit this
recreation area. Spring and summer bring wildflowers,
the bright green buddings and leaves of the aspen and
plenty of horned lizards. Bright yellows and oranges
embellish the aspen in the fall, and they glisten above
the trail like small, shiny sequins.
Please call the Springerville Ranger District at 928333-4301 to check on snow conditions before venturing
up for skiing.

East Fork Trail No. 95 (Lower Trail)
Though this trail is called the East Fork Trail, it
actually begins on the West Fork of the Little Colorado
River (LCR) then eventually ends up at the East Fork of
the LCR.
The parking area/trailhead on the left, about 1/3 mile
before Hwy. 373 in Greer, dead-ends. There are restrooms
at the end of the road, and you can park there as well.
Back at the trailhead, you will cross the West Fork. There’s
no bridge, but if it’s not high spring run-off, there’s no
problem rock-hopping across. The trail goes back behind
a few homes then begins to make the 600 foot climb up
Amberian Point- a good cardio workout. After the climb,
the rest of the hike is easy. You will walk through some
burn area and see the amazing regrowth of aspens. Since
2011, these trees have reached 15 feet tall in places. Take
note of how much new growth of all kinds of plant life
there is.
As you level off, the trail leads you to wide, tree-lined
meadows with cienegas (marshy areas) and interesting
rock formations. Venturing on you pass Marble Springs
and Colter Reservoir. You can see the old corridor of the
Apache Railway as you pass by the reservoir, and as you
look to the southwest you can see Mount Baldy.
This trail ends at Hwy. 273 and Gabaldon Horse
Campgrounds. This is the (horseback) access to the East
Fork Mount Baldy Trail #95 with great parking and ample
turn-around room and hitching posts.
As you reach Hwy. 273 you can also see, to your right,
the newly reworked hiking trailhead for the East Fork
Mount Baldy Trail #95. This trail is described on the
next page.

From Greer follow Rte. 373 to FR 575. The
trail marker is on the left side of the road just
off the main road. There is designated parking
along the river.

Mount Baldy Trail No. 95 & Crossover No. 96
You may hear people refer to this as the East Fork
Trail or Phelps Cabin Trail. A homesteader by the name
of Phelps built a cabin here, but there are no remnants
left.
A beautiful new paved parking area makes the
trailhead much easier to see from Hwy. 273. Just past
this parking area is the Gabaldon Horse Campgrounds &
trailhead referred to on the previous page.
You will start off on a two-tracker old road then
pass through a wood gate. This is where you will see the
Crossover Trail No. 96 taking off to your right. This very
nice 3.5 mile trail, one-way, connects the #95 and #94
Baldy trails. This is a favorite up and back with moderate
cardio up and downhill and great water for the dogs. It
ends at a beautiful meadow on the West Fork of the Little
Colorado River.
Getting back to the Baldy Trail No. 95, it meanders
upward through a pristine forest with views of mountain
meadows that are breathtaking. Rock formations jut
out of the ground like giants looming over the trail at
about 2.5 miles in. This is a great abbreviated version of
this trail. The entire ascent to the summit is 7.5 miles
changing 2,000 foot in elevation. The peak of Mount
Baldy is beyond the White Mountain Apache Reservation
boundary line and is closed to the public. Just prior to the
boundary are remnants of a plane crash that occurred in
the 1950s.
Many hikers leave a second vehicle at the West Fork
No. 94 trailhead and hike up this way and down No. 94.
Of the two routes up Mount Baldy, this trail (95) is
definitely the easiest.
No matter which trailhead you start from, you can
hike up and back the same trail, leaving a car at the other
trailhead or... You can hike the entire 17.5-mile loop using
the Crossover Trail No. 96. Wear comfortable shoes and
take along plenty of water. Pack a lunch and snacks. It
will take most moderate hikers a full day to do just the 14
miles, but allow another two hours for the full 17.5 loop.
This is best hiked before or after the monsoon months
of July and August. If you go during monsoons, leave
very early in the morning so you are off the top before
the rain and lightning starts. Dress in layers, and pack a
windbreaker as it is cooler and windy at the top. There
is water for the dogs, but it can be a few hours between.
Look for the small springs flowing across the trails.

Fork Campground, where FR 560 crosses the bridge and
ends at the parking area. The trail travels approximately
three miles, crosses the river and continues another four
miles (uphill) to Mexican Hay Lake. There is a variety
of terrain including picturesque panoramic views,
wildflowers and wildlife.
The vivid green colors along the river make this a
worthy hike. Willows and wild roses combined with the
melodic sounds of the river’s flow is a hiker’s paradise.
This is an up and back trail, so you can make it as long
or short as you wish. Many prefer to just hike the first
3.5 miles, all of which follows the LCR, then turnaround
where it crosses the river. This is a great summer hike.
Much of the trail is shady and there is plenty of water for
the dogs.
If you do the whole hike to Mexican Hay Lake, be
prepared for a good climb after crossing the river. Once to
the top of the bank, the trail ascends at an easier rate and
eventually levels out. Some of the best views can be seen
at the top, so the climb is worth the work.

Escudilla Mountain Trail No. 308
“To the north of the mountain you rode on honeycolored plains. Look up anywhere, anytime, and you saw
Escudilla.” This is the description of Escudilla Mountain
written by Aldo Leopold when he worked as an Arizona
Forest Officer in 1909. He was one of the founders of The
Wilderness Society and initiated the first forest wilderness
area now known as the Gila National Forest. He also
founded the profession of game management.
Back in the days when Leopold worked in Arizona,
Escudilla Mountain was the home of a large grizzly bear
named Big Foot. He was seldom seen but left incredible
tracks. Big Foot only killed one cow a year, but this was
his downfall. Eventually a government trapper (common
in those days) came out looking for problem animals and
was told about the large grizzly living up on the mountain.
After failing at all his usual methods of trapping, he rigged
up a set-gun (a string-triggered rifle), and the last grizzly
bear in Arizona shot himself on Escudilla Mountain.
Parts of Escudilla Mountain were declared
wilderness in 1984. It includes approximately 500 acres
of aspen, spruce and douglas fir. Through the years this
has been one of the most popular hikes in the area due to
the large stands of aspen bringing hikers from all over the
world to see the fall colors.
The Wallow Fire of 2011 miraculously missed the stand
of aspens at the trailhead and the first third of the trail.
Though the top two-thirds of the hike portray what fire
can do to a forest, the beauty still remains. There now
exists a revealing perspective of the terrain. Where thick
forests hid what lay beyond the edge of a spruce and
fir thicket, now you can see your way to the mountain’s
ledge and look off in many directions. Wild raspberries,
strawberries, elderberries, ferns and grasses cover the
mountainside.
Aspen trees love fire and grow back with a vengeance.
In 1950, a fire burned the northside of Escudilla. Aspen
overtook the entire burn area creating the majestic greens
in the spring and yellows in the fall that Escudilla is
famous for.
You can already see color just three short years after the
Wallow Fire. The new growth is 10 and 12 feet high. In
another 4 years, lookout..the whole mountain of Escudilla
will be back in Full color!
If you plan to hike Escudilla Mountain, read “A Sand
County Almanac” by Aldo Leopold. It may change how
you think about this mountain — you might “think like
a mountain.”
The views are stunning

One of the most beautiful areas in the White
Mountains is the West Fork of the Black River. There are
several access points along this portion of the river, but
if you want a spectacular hike through douglas fir, aspen
and giant ponderosa, the West Fork Trail is an exciting
venture through old-growth forest.
The line of trees form an avenue to guide you toward
spectacular vistas far above the river. As you hike, you’ll
find various signs of wildlife such as squirrel, elk, deer
and even mountain lion. There are expansive mountain
meadows filled with wildflowers and tall grasses that

Many fishermen have discovered an active section
of the river along the Thompson Trail and have returned
again and again for the ambience and solitude. Tall
douglas fir, willow, and aspen line the 6.5-mile (round
trip) trail that follows the West Fork of the Black River.
With a grant from the Heritage Fund, the Thompson
Trail was built with a combined effort from the U.S.
Forest Service, the Arizona Game and Fish Department
and several volunteers. It is noted as some of the most
beautiful country within the district. To protect soil and
water resources the trail is only open to hiking. Bikes,
horses or motorized vehicles are not allowed.
Spectacular waterfalls are created by the fast
running water, especially under the large rock and
cement structures called “fish barriers” that cross
the river in a couple different places. The barriers are
designed to allow fish to swim downstream, keeping
exotic (non-native) trout out of the upper reaches of
the river and its tributaries.
The old railroad berms follow the trail from above
the canyon walls with some of the original railroad ties
still present as a reminder of the logging that went on
years ago. The old tracks carried logs from Maverick,
a previously bustling logging town located deep in the
Apache Reservation, to Holbrook.
Hiking river trails can be difficult to follow
because of the rising and falling of the water and the
many marshy areas it creates, but follow the flow of the
river. There are a couple of spur trails that lead
to either FR 116 or FR 68, and eventually the
Thompson Trail meets up with the West Fork Trail
located on the east side of the river. This is where
Thompson Trail ends, and you can turn around
and head back up-river through the pines and past
countless wildflowers along the melodic Black River.
Wildlife can be
viewed if one is
careful and quiet.

Railroad Grade Trail No. 601
In 1924, Lew Calhoun was hired as the railroad
engineer that ran the little steam engine No. 307 from
Big Lake and Maverick to McNary and passenger
service from McNary to Holbrook. In its later years the
train was chartered for scenic trips and special events.
Today, the tracks of the old Apache train are no longer
there, but the corridor was left behind.
Apache County and the U.S. Forest Service has
opened the old railway beds for public use. Rails-toTrails is a program, started over 30 years ago, designed
to preserve America’s old railroad network. This trail
is part of a system of trails that is expected to run coast
to coast. There are as many as 878 trails completed that
equal more than 8,930 miles with over 600 more trails
in the works.
Today, as you hike along the old railway, you can
take in the breathtaking views of Mount Baldy and
Sunrise Peak. The trail starts from the trailhead located
on Rte. 260 (south past Sunrise Ski Resort). It is easy
to spot with its fairly new restroom building and large
parking area. The trail leads to Sheeps Crossing located
near Crescent Lake off of Rte. 273. It ends at Big Lake
601
trailhead located off of FR 249E. This trail is easy to
moderate and pretty lengthy. Some prefer to pedal the
distance, although that can get pretty challenging in some
places. Horses are allowed as well.

and Big Lake Lookout Trail
The trail meanders through a variety of terrain made
up of very old aspen, tall ponderosa pine, spruce, large
rock formations and mountain springs. Some of this
was burned in 2011, but 15 to 20 foot tall aspens and
tremendous forest foliage flourish all along the trail.
Approximately a half-mile from the trailhead is a spur
trail that leads to the Big Lake lookout tower. The tower is
no longer functional, but the hike still provides awesome
views of Big Lake, Crescent Lake, Escudilla Mountain and
Mount Baldy.
The first spring on the trail is called Spillman Spring.
Three long overlapping troughs are full of water that
trickles from the spring. Two-and-a-half miles later you
reach Indian Spring — a small pool of water, surrounded
by a mountain meadow lined with pines.
Parts of the trail follow a railroad bed of what was
once the old Apache Railroad. In years past trains carried
people and lumber between Holbrook and Maverick.
The historical aspects of this trail combined with the
spectacular scenery will make this one of your favorite
hikes.
Two-and-a-half miles from Indian Springs there is
another spur trail that leads to the West Fork of the Black
River (West Fork No. 628). At this point there are only
two-and-a-half miles left to complete the loop back to the
trailhead. The trail crosses FR 24 once and FR 249E twice.
There is water for dogs on this trail.

Government Springs Trail 95A
The Government Springs Trail is Greer’s claim to
fame. “The Trail at the End of the Road” is enjoyed
by all levels of hiker. This is an “up and back trail”
meandering along the West Fork of the Little Colorado
River (LCR).
The trail begins literally at the end of Hwy. 373. There
are restrooms and parking at the end of the road. From
the parking lot just walk upstream. The trail stays fairly
easy for the first few miles. After awhile you will have
to cross the river a few times, and the trail is not well
marked or traveled. The good thing is that this is only the
case for a mile or so, then the trail gets well worn from
those traveling from the other end. You can also access
this trail from Sheeps Crossing
off Hwy. of273.

and fish their way downstream.
Whether you travel 100 yards up the LCR or go all the
way to Mount Baldy, this is a beautiful trail.

Murray Basin Trail System No. 607
This is one of Springerville Ranger District’s most
versatile trail systems. Rolling hills, juniper trees,
open meadows, old windmills, corrals and homestead
remnants give this trail a Southwestern feel. Panoramic
views from small knolls make it an enjoyable place to
hike, bike or horseback ride. You can make this as short
or as long as you want. The trails circle, cross and zigzag
throughout the basin. You always have landmarks in your
sight, like Flat Top. You can even connect over to Saffel
Canyon and Robinson/Flat Top Trail, to the west, in the
Water Canyon area.
Large ancient junipers stand in solitude and spread
their angular branches, gathering sunlight. You might
want to take a break for lunch near a corral alongside an
old abandoned homestead- the windmill still turns in the
breeze.
This is a great trail all year. When the snow gets deep
in the high country, you can still hike here. Take water

Butler Canyon Trail No. 98
This beautiful mountain canyon trail was named
after Jacob Noah Butler, who moved to Arizona with
his 19 children in 1888 to homestead in the Greer area.
Tall evergreens and quaking aspen overlook large rock
formations along the flowing Butler Canyon stream.
Wildflowers color the landscape, making this a popular
place to visit from early spring until late fall.
This trail is only a one mile hike — short enough to
take your time and enjoy nature’s wonders. The trail is
well marked and crosses Butler Canyon Stream two times.
About halfway around the loop you will see spring water
piped out of the ground. You can taste how refreshing real
spring water is. Beautiful lime green fern line the forest
floor in the spring and summer, then turn gold and red in
the fall along with the yellow aspen.
Greer is a great recreation area with several resorts,
restaurants, cabins and campgrounds with beautiful
natural surroundings including Greer Lakes and the East
and West Fork of the Little Colorado River.

Page 26 Hit the Trails Greer is truly a four season destination. Located in the beautiful Apache Sitgreaves National Forest of eastern Arizona, this
small, recreational and extremely scenic haven offers a relaxed,
friendly atmosphere with lots to see and do. Deer and elk graze
the banks of the Little Colorado River, meandering through
the center of town. At 8,500 feet elevation, this mountain valley
is lined with aspen, fir and the largest ponderosa pine forest in
the world.
Camping, hiking, biking, fishing, horseback and ATV riding,
hunting, and wildlife viewing are a few of the favored activities
during spring, summer and fall. Once the snow falls, enjoy
cross-country and downhill skiing, snow shoeing, snowmobiling and ice fishing, or simply cozy up to a crackling fire in one
of the many quaint lodges or cabin rentals.
Greer’s dining and shopping opportunities complement the
charming events throughout the year. Each summer locals host
“Greer Days,” a fun-filled event offering a fishing derby, parade, entertainment and community spirit. e Butterfly
Lodge Museum tells the colorful history of the area, and hosts
hands-on workshops and entertainment.Greer is magical. Once
you experience her allure, you will return again and again.
