Performance, Efficiency, Comfort
The aim of Thorn Lighting is to improve quality
of life by lighting people and places. Supporting
this mission is our PEC programme, through which
we deliver efficient and reliable lighting and
contribute to a healthy and comfortable environment
The PEC programme is based
on the three main factors in a
lighting installation which affect
the quality of life and our natural
environment:
Performance: Providing the
best visual effectiveness
Efficiency: Minimising the use
of energy
Comfort: Giving people
satisfaction and stimulation
These principles are embodied in
the way we design our products
as well as individual lighting
schemes. By addressing all three
factors we can make a dramatic
improvement in the quality of life.
Primata II has been designed
to fulfil all criteria for achieving
PEC in today’s demanding
environments, from its choice
of light sources and simple
installation to its virtually unlimited
flexibility. Consistent, tool-free
installation, plus a wide range of
optics and integrated dimming
and emergency options, make it a
powerful tool in the drive towards
lower costs and higher workplace
efficiency.
Performance
Efficiency
Comfort
Providing the best
visual effectiveness
Primata II has been designed
for optimum performance in
a wide range of applications,
from industry and production
to supermarkets and shops. Its
overall flexibility, together with
the optical performance of its
many attachments, can easily
be tailored to any lighting task.
Its precisely calculated reflectors
offer efficient and economical
lighting, and asymmetric reflectors
provide wall-washing or uniform
vertical illumination.
Minimising the use
of energy
Energy efficient artificial lighting
helps to reduce carbon dioxide
emissions into the atmosphere,
and Primata II uses the latest
technologies to set the pace in
environmental sensitivity. With
the latest lamp technology such
as T16 high output and high
efficiency lamps, LOR’s of up
to 95% and electronic and
dimmable control gear, Primata II
is perfectly prepared for this task.
Giving people satisfaction
and stimulation
With its choice of different louvre
optics and other attachments,
Primata II can provide the
right combination of glare
control, direct lighting and
indirect distribution to create
a comfortable and productive
environment.
These are just some of the
‘lighting tools’ which are
incorporated into the Primata II
concept. Equally important, the
fittings can be interchanged to
respond to changes in space
design or function. This is a truely
versatile system. As well as the
optics on individual luminaires,
entire luminaires can be replaced
by track modules when a new
lighting scheme requires 3-phase
spotlighting, for example.
Time is another resource which
Primata II can save. Its consistent,
tool-free installation method
offers enormous benefits for the
installer, enabling more jobs to be
completed within the same time
frame. For end users, too,
Primata II can enable a
refurbishment to be completed far
earlier than using conventional
lighting concepts.
The system can also incorporate
lighting and emergency controls.
Available as options in 7-pole
and 9-pole systems, these offer
huge advantages in terms of
reduced maintenance and
increased user friendliness, with
straightforward installation.
The secret is Primata II’s
pre-wired trunking, which
already incorporates all
necessary components. Now, a
state-of-the-art lighting solution
with integrated lighting and
emergency controls can be fitted
as easily as a conventional
system.
Tool-free installation

Each component of a Primata
II installation is pre-built in the
factory. Work on site is simply a
matter of snapping the modules
together. Untrained personnel can
do this using their two-hands. No
tools are required and rates of
installation and productivity are
impressive.
4. Easy positioning and tool-free
installation of the luminaire
1. After the suspension element
is fixed to the ceiling (wire
suspension shown on this
example), the trunking simply
snaps onto the brackets.
2. Just a simple push and the
pre-wired trunking is securely
installed. Tool-free electrical
and mechanical connection
has been made between
trunkings, due to its patented
connector system.

Electrical configuration
5-pole
5-poles configured for
three-phase operation: Primata II
supports ‘load sharing’ to triple
the maximum length of a
continuous run, compared to
standard single-phase
environments. This is possible
because each phase can be used
to maximum loading. In addition,
Primata II provides separate
circuits which can be switched
independantly for very basic
lighting control. Compatible
luminaires include CP - Switch
Start Compensated, NC - Switch
Start Non-Compensated and HF.
7-pole
7-poles configured for
three-phase operation: Primata II
enhances 5-pole capabilities by
supporting additional dimming
and/or standard emergency
or SelfTest emergency lighting.
These options are available with
dimming and emergency versions
HFD, HF E3, HF E3T, HFD E3,
HFD E3T.

Electrical safety
Primata II uses dedicated
connectors to achieve perfect
electrical connections with
optimum safety. There are
no complicated electrical
connections and no terminal
blocks between luminaires and
wiring. The turnbuckle mechanism
ensures that once a connection is
made, it stays secure.

ultimate in multi-functional (HF
E3X) trunking and management.
Three-phase system
For high load applications the
three-phase design of Primata II
offers enormous benefits. Every
luminaire can be set to pick one
of the phases by using a simple
selector tab at the connector.
Because this flexibility allows
long uninterrupted runs,
Primata II is the perfect solution
for large buildings or long,
narrow transport areas.
Max load
Maximum load recommendation
for Miniature Circuit Breakers
(MCB)
For lighting installations the use of
C type MCBs is recommended.
The following table gives some
typical values (recommendations)
and is valid for one pole MCBs
(single phase application) and a
supply voltage of 230V.
These benefits are possible
because of the characteristics of
three-phase power. A balanced
three-phase load minimises the
‘reactive power’ (kVA) drawn
from the mains, reducing the
amount of energy consumed.
In addition, each luminaire is
connected to one of the three
phases, so most luminaires can
be turned off at night or during
periods of low requirement, while
maintaining sufficient illumination
in critical areas.
When using multi-pole MCBs
(3-phase application) the number
of ballasts has to be reduced by
20%.
The table on right shows the
maximum number of fittings which
can be installed dependant on
wattage and MCB.

Complete control
Dimming
Lighting can be responsible for
more than 20% of total electricity
consumption. In office buildings it
can account for as much as half
of total energy costs. The use of
lighting controls can reduce this
figure by up to 25%, encouraging
users to minimise wasteful use of
light and make the maximum use
of natural light using presence
and/or daylight linked controls.
This approach is in line with
energy regulations such as the
Energy Performance of Buildings
Directive (EPBD) which is
driving energy saving initiatives
throughout Europe.
Primata II is designed to support
advanced indoor lighting controls
without any additional installation
effort.
Emergency
Just like fire protection systems,
emergency lighting is potentially
life saving – provided it is
properly maintained. Increasingly
stringent legal requirements
require owners to inspect,
test and maintain emergency
lighting in workplaces and public
buildings.
Primata II offers a wide range of
compliant solutions. Its emergency
product range includes basic (E3)
self-contained luminaires as well
as SelfTest (E3T) and Addressable
test (E3X) emergency luminaires
which are fully compliant with
European Standards. The E3T
and E3X systems deliver complete
peace of mind and safety without
the need for costly and time
consuming manual testing by
a competent person. Primata II
can incorporate these luminaires
without any additional effort.
The following emergency options are available to suit varying requirements and budgets. The comparison
table should help to decide which option is best for you, considering the project environment:

More than just a trunking
system - special accessories
Track Module
The use of spotlights for accent lighting within a general lighting system
is becoming increasingly popular in supermarkets, shops, showrooms
and other spaces where items are on display. The Primata II Track
Module enables spotlighting to be incorporated into a Primata II
installation. Solutions such as Graffiti spotlights are highly effective.
The Track Module maintains the modular design of the rest of the
Primata II family and can therefore be easily integrated into any
lighting design. It can also be removed and used elsewhere when
the floor plan or lighting design is changed, without requiring trained
electricians.
Presence Detector
An integrated Presence Detector module enables Primata II luminaires
to be switched on only when needed. This is the simplest way to reduce
energy consumption.
Angle connectors
Primata II L, T and X trunking connectors allow designers to create
various shapes within continuous row systems.
IP60 Industrial Optic
In environments where airborne particles can leave deposits on
lamps and reflectors, high IP ratings are essential to maintain LOR
performance. Primata II with the IP60 (dust-tight) Industrial Optic
offers this protection, extending cleaning and maintenance intervals,
maintaining output levels, and reducing costs. It is an outstanding
choice for any manufacturing application, including the automotive
industry.

Suspension brackets
Select suspension brackets, which will be suitable for your application
or building/installation environment. Turn to page 14 for Step 1
Ordering Guides.
Trunking and electrical connection
Select trunking with 5, 7 or 9-pole wiring depending on which
luminaire is to be used. Make sure the modularity of the trunking/
wiring specified matches the luminaire. Specify all other accessories,
which might be needed in conjunction with the trunking or wiring
(couplers, electrical connection, etc.) Turn to pages 15, 16 and 17 for
Step 2 Ordering Guides.
Luminaires
Specify the luminaire to go with the system, depending on the
functionality (dimming, emergency) you need and wattage, which was
considered when selecting the pre-wired trunking. If IP40 is required for
the system, please select the correct IP40 kit. Turn to pages 18 and 19
for Step 3 Ordering Guides.
Optics
Depending on what kind of light distribution or level of glare control is
required within the application, select the particular optic in the right
wattage. Dedicated end caps and couplers to be specified as well.
Turn to pages 20 - 29 for Step 4 Ordering Guides.
Optional Extras
Additional accessories such as spotlight modules or presence detectors
can be specified as well. The only exception within the ordering
process is the Industrial Optic IP60, where no separate luminaire or
end caps etc. need to be specified (supplied as a complete fitting).
Turn to pages 30 and 31 for Step 5 Ordering Guides.
