With friends and family of all ages gathered at our table for the big feast we had a lively discussion about what we have to be thankful for. As we went around the table we heard the obvious: a roof over our heads clothes on our back food in our tummies (some being bigger than others:) a few bucks in the bank to pay our bills health and our health care system – it may not be perfect but it’s better than most And then a quiet voice said “I’m glad to live in Canada because there is no war here. I have a Syrian refugee in my class and her life has been horrible – scared, hungry, cold, homeless, sick. Her life has been the exact opposite of mine.” This little voice made a big impact. Each of us reflected at what had been said at our table, the meta message being – count your blessings every day not just at Thanksgiving and to always share what we have as best we can. And on a personal note, I’m thankful that I have an enthusiastic and capable PROBUS executive and committee members. Sam MacKinnon 2 Mariposa PROBUS Club Speaker’s Page October’s Speaker: Deb Halbot Deb began by showing us a few of her cameras. She started her photography ‘hobby’ just about 5 or 6 years ago, using a small point and shoot camera. Those pictures looked pretty good to us. Then she showed us the next camera, which has a pretty impressive adjustable lens, but that soon was not enough for Deb’s burgeoning interests. She wanted to take really good pictures of animals and birds in the wild. Next she took out of her bag her current and favourite camera, a beautiful camera with a huge arm’s length lens. A real beauty. We then got to see a wonderful slide show of her beautiful pictures. She is up at 5 a.m. every morning roaming the countryside looking for whatever strikes her. Beauty and nature are what attract her, which she captures with extraordinary skill and creativity. We saw breath-taking pictures of birds, animals, sunrises and sunsets, and an incredible double rainbow. For those interested in developing their own camera skills Deb encourages you to join the Orillia and District Camera Club, web site: orilliacameraclub.ca/, whose members are very eager and helpful and wonderful about sharing their knowledge and experiences. To have a look at some of Deb’s beautiful work visit her at: http://www.debhalbot.com November’s Speaker: Brent Thomas, Assistant Fire Chief, Orillia Fire Department Topic: Emergency Preparedness and what to do, what to have for 72 hours, what to take if you have to leave. Also some tips for those of us north of 50 specific to emergency preparedness. Mr. Thomas has 32 years in emergency services first as a paramedic and then in the fire service. He has been involved in emergency management throughout his career including being involved on 9/11 at the Hamilton Airport dealing with US planes landing in Canada. He has been with Orillia fire for 2 ½ years as Assistant Fire Chief in charge of Training & Emergency Management. Harry Braun Retired Structural Engineer Career – 34 years in Thunder Bay, Ontario Hobbies – Golf, skiing, genealogy Orillia since 2014 14 Mariposa PROBUS Club On September 20th PROBUS members enjoyed a dinner at Settler’s Ghost Golf Club. It was a lovely evening consisting of good food and laughter. In spite of less than perfect weather, our group of 9 had a most enjoyable day at Niagara on the Lake and the Shaw Festival. After a delicious and elegant lunch at the Pillar and Post, some of us had a chance to stroll down the Main Street. We attended a performance of Alice in Wonderland. The costuming and sets were amazing and of course the characters and story are timeless. After a long day we all arrived back home tired but happy! 2 Mariposa PROBUS Club Oh what a beautiful morning!!….. We really lucked in on our Fall Boat Cruise up the Severn River to the Big Chute. The impressive paddle wheeler quietly sailed across the bay and slipped into the dock on a day when the sky was a vivid blue with puffy white clouds and the water was like glass, even better, the weather forecast was for a fall day of 21 degrees. Up the river we went, through Gloucester Pool and right up to the railway and power dam where the captain filled us in on a little history. We enjoyed a delicious lunch along the way of chicken parmesan, salad, pasta, vegetables, mashed potato and some yummy squares for dessert. Just one little bit of excitement when we hit a dead head log with a horrible thump, then a disquieting silence for a few seconds, but all was fine and we continued along our way. Unfortunately, the fall colours are not very vivid yet, probably because of the warm weather we have had Really a lovely two and a half hours with the great people in our Mariposa PROBUS. 3 Mariposa PROBUS Club Mariposa PROBUS Club Upcoming Dates Please submit any entries for this Bulletin Board to [email protected] Thanks, Frederika Oct 19 Oct 20 Oct 26 Oct 27 Oct 27 Oct 29 Nov 8 Nov 10 Nov 14 Nov 16 Nov 17 Nov 24 Nov 30 Dec 1 Left behind Golf Couchiching Golf CC Lunch Golf & Bridge Euchre Panoramic Appy Party St Paul’s Centre Tech Club Euchre General Meeting Bridge Miller Appy Party Euchre Christmas Party André Rieu Someone left behind their cheese board and knife at the cottage appy party at Rick Beyers.
