Fence Report - the Garden State Chapter
JUN 2014 The New Jersey Fence Report The Garden State Chapter of the AFA June 2014 A Letter From The President June Fencer’s Letter As we hoped, the long winter is now a memory and we are full throttle into the busy season. It’s always tough to balance work and family life and still allocate the time we need to keep that balance between both (at least that’s what my wife tells me). Keeping up on what goes on in the industry, being able to commiserate and share experiences with fellow fencers has always been what I’ve enjoyed about the Garden State AFA. It is one night every other month to go out and have a free dinner, sit and enjoy the fellowship of others that understand our business. We try to work for the better good of the industry on the whole. We are currently working on putting together a Chapter Project helping a single mother of three children whose home was devastated by Hurricane Sandy. This is a woman that has two special needs children trying to get back on her feet. This is a project near and dear to many of us, using our talents to give back to those who need. We should have more to report on this project at our July meeting as well as what materials and manpower we will be looking for. One of the major issues that the AFA and the local or regional chapters have experienced has been the lack of active members and meeting attendance. We have managed to keep the GSAFA alive and active, but this hasn’t been easy for many chapters. There are currently 3 or 4 chapters that are being shelved or dissolved due to non-compliance and inactivity. Unfortunately one of those is our sister chapter, the Keystone Chapter. We are reaching out to all Keystone members and former members to be a part of the GSAFA. This can be a benefit to both groups rolling into one. We are holding our July Meeting at the Best Western Lehigh Valley Hotel on US 22 in Bethlehem, PA on Tuesday, July 8th at 7:00. We typically move our meetings around so those in any area have the opportunity to attend a meeting without driving too far. Please come out and join us for a buffet dinner free of charge (all meetings are free). You don’t have to be a current AFA member to attend and participate. This invitation goes out to all New Jersey Fencers as well. This location is centrally located not far from the NJ border, only about a 60-90 minute drive for all those not in Southern NJ. It is easily accessible for both PA and NJ people located between I-78 and I-80 and the NE Extension of the PA Turnpike. Our program will be a “Meet and Greet”. We will bring everyone up to speed on where the AFA has been, where it is going, and what we as a consolidated chapter can do. You’ll have the opportunity to meet people that do the same type of work you do from other parts of the region and share your stories. If you would like to spend the night we have access to rooms at both the Best Western and the Hampton Inn sister property on the same site. If you are interested in a room please e-mail me at [email protected] as early as you can so I can secure a room block. Later in the newsletter you will see a flyer about our September event which is a Spirit Cruise around Manhattan on Friday September 12th. The cost of this is $50 per person for the first 8 people from any company. Over 8 the price becomes $100 per person which is well below the rate we are paying. This is a great opportunity for a date night with your spouse or significant other. Enjoy dinner and dancing while enjoying the evening skyline of Manhattan. We need a head count for dinner for the July Meeting by Thursday, July 3rd. Please RSVP to either Carol Ann Berry at [email protected] or me at [email protected]. Hope to see you in Bethlehem!
