SACRED HEART ACADEMY
ANNUAL REPORT | 2013–2014
2 | A Message from the President & Principal | SHA Annual Report 2013–2014
A Message from the
President
&
Principal
Dear Friends of Sacred Heart,
It is with a spirit of gratitude and pride that we share with you Sacred Heart
Academy’s 2013–2014 Annual Report. Its pages will illustrate the many ways we
enrich the lives of our students through an education uniquely designed for young
women.
Led by a committed team of board members, administrators, faculty and staff, the
school year was a period of momentous change. Our Building the Dream Capital
Campaign officially closed on June 30, 2014, after surpassing our goal of $5 million.
The fruits of our fundraising labors were realized when construction began on the
Science Research Center in February 2014. And our rigorous academic program
was enhanced when we launched the newly branded curriculum of STEAM and
STELLAR.
Fortunately, the 216 graduates of the class of 2014 were here to witness the
transformation of SHA campus. Many of these strong, confident, educated, faith-filled
women will continue their education at Catholic institutions and many will benefit
from over $45 million in scholarships.
The success of our
students continues
to be the result of
a strong network
of faculty, parents,
alumnae, donors &
sister classmates
As you read the capital campaign narrative later in this report, along with our
description of the STEAM and STELLAR strands of curriculum, you will see that we
remain at the forefront of education, and are consistently developing programs that
meet the needs of changing times. We are building upon the momentum of 2013–
2014 school year. Guided by our dedicated faculty, the young women of Sacred Heart
Academy are preparing research projects for Intel and Siemens competitions, and our
arts and athletic programs are soaring supported by the talents of our students.
The success of our students continues to be the result of a strong network of faculty,
parents, alumnae, donors and sister classmates who support each other in every facet
of their lives. You have our sincere thanks for helping us empower young women by
awakening within them an awareness of God’s inclusive love and call to bring about
union and reconciliation throughout all creation.
Sincerely,
who support each
other in every facet
of their lives.

A Message from the
Board of Trustees
Dear Sacred Heart Academy Family, Alumnae, and Friends,
I am honored to present the financial results of the 2013-14 academic year on behalf of the Sacred
Heart Academy Trustees’ Finance Committee. During the year ended June 30, 2014, the Academy’s core
investment fund, the Corde Fund, realized a 13.6% investment return and grew by nearly 30% overall.
Sacred Heart Academy operated with a balanced budget of $13.8 million, beginning with revenues of $8.6
million from tuition, and $2.0 million from other student-related program fees and NYS aid. Contributions,
including new gifts to the capital campaign, contributed facilities, and other fundraising activities, brought
in a combined $2.5 million to promote the success of academic and capital expansion programs. On the
expense side, instruction costs amounted to $7.9 million, with another $1.5 million in funds directed to
other student activities, programs, and scholarship support. As of June 30, 2014, Sacred Heart Academy
had total assets of $18.0 million and net assets of $12.0 million. Assets include $1.7 million in cash, $6.3
million in Corde Fund investments, and $8.9 million in plant. Liabilities of $6.0 million include a $3.8
million in low-interest loan. The Finance Committee is proud of the support it gives to the Academy’s
mission, by setting and promoting high fiscal performance goals.
Sincerely,
Barbara J. (Burke ’77) Holahan, P ’14, P ’16,
Finance Committee Chair, Board of Trustees

BUILDING
The Dream
A Campaign for Sacred Heart Academy
C
ommitted to ensuring the finest learning environment
and confident in its continued vitality and growth, Sacred
Heart Academy launched the Building the Dream Capital
Campaign in March 2012. During the Campaign, the SHA community
overwhelmingly supported the school’s call to action reflecting
the commitment, dedication and support of its closest friends.
The campaign officially closed in June 2014 after raising nearly
$5.2 million, surpassing its goal of $5 million. With this support,
Sacred Heart Academy was able to make physical expansions,
curricular enhancements, and professional developments needed to
keep SHA at the forefront of education.
Expanded Campus
The first phase of the Building the Dream campaign was fulfilled in Spring 2013 when SHA athletic
teams and gym classes first set foot on the new 1/5 mile track and Four Sisters Field. For the first
time in its sixty-five year history, Sacred Heart Academy has a home field. The track team no
longer has to run the length of Cathedral Avenue to St. Paul’s School or travel for “home” games.
SHA friends and family can now proudly sit on Red & Gold bleachers beneath flags that display
words that reinforce the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph: Unity, Reconciliation, Justice, Peace,
Hospitality, and Respect.
Surrounding property acquisitions have also allowed Sacred Heart Academy to truly expand from
a school building to a full-fledged campus. Across from the school is the Joseph House, which
holds administrative offices including the Office of the President, the Office of the Vice President,
Institutional Advancement, and Finance. Students regularly visit these areas to participate in school
service projects, in which they gain experience in office responsibilities and alumnae relations. Next
door is the Corde House which contains the SHA Guidance Center. Each of our counselors has a
private office where one-on-one group sessions with students and parents are conducted in a private
and welcoming environment. In addition, counselors now utilize a special tech-center to introduce
a variety of resources and guide students through the college research and application processes.
Cameron Engineering of Woodbury, NY, was awarded the Silver Award for Engineering Excellence
from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) in 2014 for its work on the new
campus, which in addition to the above-mentioned areas includes a practice field, a revamped
driveway, parking area, student drop-off area, and various pathways. Ever mindful of the needs of
Sacred Heart Academy and its students, Cameron Engineering created a master plan that improves
safety, saves energy and beautifies our grounds.
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts,
Mathematics (STEAM) Program
Recognizing the present and future national and international needs
in areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics
(STEAM), SHA enhanced its STEAM Program to empower students
to become strong women leaders in these fields. Each student has an
opportunity to develop an interest in STEAM-related careers through
a rigorous academic program, presentations with guest speakers, and
special hands-on projects specifically geared to spark an interest in new
and exciting occupations.
The most notable STEAM related achievement of the Capital Campaign
is the addition of a new Science Research Center on the fourth floor of
the school. In February 2014, SHA broke ground on a major project
to transform the former Guidance Center into a state-of-the-art facility.
A gift from Peg (LaRosa ’66) and Peter D’Angelo P ’92, the Science
Research Center officially opened and was blessed by Bishop Murphy on
September 5, 2014. During this special ceremony, students in Sacred
Heart’s Science Research Class spoke with alumnae, board members,
and benefactors about their anticipated science competition entries and
enthusiasm for the STEAM curriculum at SHA.
Capital Campaign
Leadership
Sacred Heart Academy is
grateful to the Alumnae and
Parents listed to the right
who spearheaded our
Capital Campaign.
Professional Development
Sacred Heart Academy allocated funds raised by the Building the Dream
Capital Campaign for the continued professional development of its
faculty and staff. Faculty members remain engaged in staying at the
forefront of the latest knowledge, teaching techniques and technology
in their areas of specialty. By constantly improving their own academic
and leadership abilities, the ever strengthening team at SHA provides
an unparalleled level of education and support to the young women of
Sacred Heart Academy.

CURRICULUM at SACRED HEART ACADEMY
The curriculum at Sacred Heart Academy combines two complementary strands of course offerings, each strand including
courses that are basic to a classical, college-preparatory education, as well as those that will help our young women succeed
in a constantly changing, increasingly digital and globally focused world culture and job market. During the 2013-2014
school year, we officially launched these strands and branded them as STEAM and STELLAR. Through mandatory course
study in both strands, students are equipped with strong faith and the knowledge, skills, and sensitivities that will enable
them to make a valuable contribution to the society in which they find themselves after graduation.

Dr. Mary Ellen Minogue Ph.D., P ’02, ’07,
English Department Chair
The STELLAR strand of curriculum at Sacred
Heart Academy ensures the vibrancy and
applicability of the Humanities throughout
our students’ formative years. Partnered with
the STEAM initiative, STELLAR guarantees the
young women entrusted to the stewardship of
Sacred Heart Academy a complete and complex
education. So aptly affirmed by Steve Jobs, late
founder and CEO of Apple, “It’s technology
married with liberal arts, humanities, that
yields us the result that makes our heart
sing.” Indeed, Humanities is the bedrock of
the STELLAR strand of disciplines. Defined by
the Stanford Humanities Center, Humanities
is “the study of how people process and
document the human experience... Knowledge
of these records of human experience gives us
the opportunity to feel a sense of connection to
those who have come before us, as well as to our
contemporaries.” The young women of Sacred
Heart Academy learn from the past, apply
this knowledge to the present, and work for a
better future; in short, they learn to “connect”
through exploration of the Social Sciences,
Theology, English Language and Literature,
Languages Other Than English, Law, Business,
Art, and Research in Humanities: undoubtedly,
a STELLAR playlist. The underlying purpose of
an amalgamation of these disciplines is echoed
in the words of American novelist and essayist,
Mark Slouka: “The humanities, done right, are
the crucible in which our evolving notions of
what it means to be fully human are put to the
test; they teach us, incrementally, endlessly,
not what to do, but how to be. Their method is
confrontational, their domain unlimited, their
’product’ not truth but the reasoned search for
truth, their ’success’ something very much like
Frost’s momentary stay against confusion.”
The “search for truth” and
understanding of our global reality
is of primary focus via the Social
Sciences at Sacred Heart. As freshmen and
sophomores progress from Global Studies, to
the upperclasswoman experience of American
History and Government, Economics/
Participation in Government, and Psychology,
they explore the cultural, economic, geographic,
and political realities, past and present, that
impact their world. A.P. curricula are available
in both American History and Psychology.
Foregrounding the commonalities that unite
the human experience, this discipline fosters in
each student the valued attributes of
understanding, tolerance, and empathy.
“What it means to be fully human”
cannot be achieved without
embracing the spiritual. Theology
My Sacred Heart Academy education has been invaluable to me, which is why my daughters currently attend
SHA. Importantly at Sacred Heart I learned that there was nothing I could not accomplish through hard work and
determination and that there was no career that was “off limits”. When I became a prosecutor (at the time a predominately
male field), I worked hard and was determined to succeed. My years at Sacred Heart were the foundation of the excellent
writing skills Judges have commented on (thank you Dr. Minogue) and the courtroom presence that jurors always tell me
I possess. Now when I mentor young prosecutors I find myself remembering the words, “strong faith and hope, eternal
loyalty”. If I can help to instill those virtues into the next generation of prosecutors I will have succeeded.

NNE T. GALLIGAN-DONNELLY ’82, P ’16, ’18, Deputy Chief, Organized Crime & Rackets Bureau, Nassau County District Attorney
As I reflect on my high school days at Sacred Heart Academy and their particular impact on my life now, three
integral components of my SHA education come to mind: the ability to write well, the study of theology, and
passionate and dedicated teachers. In college, I’m often complimented by my professors and peers about the quality
of my writing, and I credit this mostly to the superb writing skills that the faculty in SHA’s English and Social Studies
departments have helped me to cultivate. My experiences in theology classes at SHA, moreover, have inspired me to study
theology at the University of Notre Dame, and I firmly believe that SHA would not be SHA without this fundamental and
integrative discipline, which draws together the various subject areas through the intersection of faith and reason in order
to ascertain a better understanding of what truth really is. Most of all, SHA’s incredibly devoted teachers have instilled in
me a love of learning and moral values that reflect a profound appreciation for the intrinsic and inviolable dignity of the
human person.
— GRACE MARIETTE AGOLIA ’13, Sophomore, Bachelor of Arts in Theology (expected May 2017), University of Notre Dame
at Sacred Heart offers freshmen and
sophomores an expansive exploration of
Hebrew and Christian scriptures, sacramental
faith, and morality. The upperclass experience
in Theology challenges students to delve into
the ramifications of Church history and
Catholic social teaching, with further
exploration available through senior electives
in Bioethics and World Religions. As students
examine the tenets of Catholicism, they are
encouraged to center their energies on the lived
response to the Gospel message of Jesus.
English studies at Sacred Heart,
unearthing both the dynamics of
language and the breadth of
literature, take students on a journey whose
scope encompasses a “domain unlimited” with
respect to works of fiction and non-fiction
alike. Reinforcing the key skills of critical
reading, effective writing, conversant speaking,
and active listening, English studies commence
with a survey of Literary Genre in the 9th grade
and proceeds to a survey of American Literature
and British Literature in the 10th and 11th grades,
respectively. Two A.P. curricula, English
Language and English Literature, are offered to
upperclasswomen who accept the challenge of
increased rigor. Seniors choose from five
electives in addition to A.P. Literature including
two college-accredited courses, Gender Studies
and Shakespeare, as well as Selected Topics,
Hitchcock Studies, and Poetry/Speech.
“Evolving notions” of world
languages and cultures comprise the
province of Languages Other
Than English at Sacred Heart. In addition to a
class devoted to the applicability of Latin roots
to English and scientific vocabulary, each
freshman commits to a three-year study of one
of the following Romance languages: Spanish,
French, and Italian. An exploration of the
structure of language, of vocabulary, and of
culture brings the student to a clearer
comprehension of the interdependence of these
three integral elements. A.P. Spanish Language,
Spanish Literature, a fourth year of study in all
three languages, Foreign Film Studies and
Conversational Italian are electives available to
seniors.
studies in all three areas and then opt for more
intense study in the ensuing three years. Art
History, Studio Art, Design/Drawing, and
Drawing/Painting encourage self-expression as
well as appreciation of practiced form and style.
A.P. Portfolio is an option open to seniors.
Courses in Basic Music and varied levels of
Music Theory/Music Theory Honors, including
A.P. Music Theory/Advanced Harmony develop
in students an understanding of technique,
The value of a discipline that stresses
expertise in the “confrontational”
aspect of the human experience is
fully evident in the college-accredited Business
Law course offered at Sacred Heart. Criminal
Law, Contract Law, Consumer Law, Family
Law, and Personal Property Law, falling under
the purview of this course, offer students the
opportunity to confront issues relevant to
business issues endemic to the workplace.
Another course, Accounting, though mathrelated, also falls within the parameters of the
STELLAR strand since it intertwines with the
business world in its study of the valuation of
assets and sources of business capital. Both
courses offer students a significant introduction
to business-related agenda.
The Arts thrive at Sacred Heart. In
their purest form, Art, Music and
Dance instruct students “not what
to do, but how to be.” All freshmen pursue
Sacred Heart Academy not only helps me grow in my faith exponentially, but also inspires me to share this newfound
faith with all those around me. Through the active roles of clubs, such as Catholic League, the emphasis on service
and inclusive love for all of God’s creations, and the unity felt during school Liturgies, a strong Catholic faith is not only
taught here, but is a core value of our formation as women of heart. Theology classes that explore different elements of the
Catholic Church, such as church history or sacraments, are engaging and make us want to keep learning more about our
ever-growing faith. Without the support and guidance I receive here at SHA every day I would not be as strong, sure, or
excited about my faith in Jesus Christ, God our Father, and the Holy Spirit.

As a student at Sacred Heart Academy, I have participated in various academic competitions. In my sophomore year, I
worked with a team of four other girls to develop a presentation for the European Commission in NYC that examined
the challenges facing the Euro Area, with a special spotlight on the debt and deficit challenges of France. As a junior, I
simulated a Federal Open Market Committee Meeting with another all-girl team at the New York Fed. I also participated
in National History Day and prepared a paper which my social studies teacher, Ms. Grazioli, was extremely helpful and
encouraging throughout my research. Currently, I am preparing a research paper for the Behavioral Sciences Division of
the Intel Science Talent Competition on a comparative study of girls in single-sex and coeducational high schools.

in depth a topic of interest in the fields of

commentary. Respectful of established formats
prescribed by the Modern Language

discourse, conflating original critique with
recognized scholarly findings, garnering a deep
appreciation for both components of the
research experience.

fields of law, education, publishing, business,
social work, and the arts. The Humanities at
Sacred Heart offer a transformative experience
to young women, the value of which is
perhaps best summarized in the testimonial
of First Lady, Michelle Obama: “The arts and
humanities define who we are as a people. That
is their power—to remind us of what we each
have to offer, and what we all have in common.
To help us understand our history and imagine
our future. To give us hope in the moments of

Sacred Heart academics have allowed me to excel as a student over the last three years. The challenging curriculum
is constantly molding me into a better student by forcing me to work hard and think critically. The single sex
environment creates a greater focus on academics and encourages female empowerment. The learning environment that
Sacred Heart has created gives every girl an opportunity to achieve academic success.

“The enchanting charms of this sublime science
reveal only to those who have the courage to go
deeply into it. But when a woman, who because
of her sex and our prejudices encounters
infinitely more obstacles than that of a man
in familiarizing herself with complicated
problems,
succeeds
nevertheless
in
surmounting these obstacles and penetrating
the most obscure parts of them, without doubt
she must have the noblest courage, quite
extraordinary talents and superior genius.”
— Carl Friedrich Gauss in a letter to Sophie
Germain (c.April 1807)
Sacred Heart Academy’s rigorous academic
program is well known and respected. We
had a strong science, mathematics, arts and
technology program long before “STEAM”
came into popularity. Many of our alumnae
work in the fields of education, engineering,
medicine, research, technology and the arts.
Our program changes and grows continually to
keep our young women on the cutting edge and
prepared for life outside our campus.
Our ever-changing curriculum is again being
redesigned to provide each young woman
exposure to STEAM careers. The availability of
3-D printers within the STEAM Program will
provide the young women with marketable
skills for the future. A new state-of-the art
Science Research Lab has just opened for the
use of those young women who would like to
pursue Intel and Siemens Competitions as well
as a more in-depth science research program.
Another strand in this initiative is the Career
Pathway. The purpose of this pathway is to
guide those students interested in the medical
or allied health fields. As the initiative evolves,
more pathways will be introduced.
STEAM Career Days have taken place in order
to allow our alumnae who are at the top of
their Science, Math, Arts, Engineering and
Technology fields to share their passion for
their work with our young women. Guest
College Professors are also invited to speak
to the young women as well. Mentors are
provided so that these young women have
the opportunity to intern with masters in the
STEAM fields. One of the major contributors
to this part of the initiative is the LI STEM
Hub, cosponsored by
North Shore/LIJ,
Cradle of Aviation Museum, Brookhaven
National Labs, and Winthrop Hospital as well
as Cameron Engineering, Homeland Security
and LIRACHE.
With each year, the members Sacred Heart
Academy faculty continue with Professional
Development to ensure that these young
women are given the most up-to-date
information and course work to keep them on
the cutting edge.
The young women of Sacred Heart Academy
do not just learn about STEAM careers, they
become the STEAM professionals. They have
the heart, they have the minds and it is our
duty to give them the tools to go forward and
become the next generation of leaders in a once
male dominated set of careers. Through our
program, we empower these young women to
take the “bull by the horns” approach and run
with it. No sitting back and looking in from
the sidelines, but to be an actual player on the
field. No lip service about how you can do it,
but giving them the impetus to do it!
The strong science curriculum at SHA
initially sparked my interest in science
and helped shape the foundation for my
future career in medicine. In particular,
it was after taking AP Biology my senior
year at SHA that I decided to go pre-med
and major in Biology at Loyola University
Maryland. As a current Physician Assistant,
I have SHA to thank for setting me on the
right path for my education and successful
career!

We didn’t have many high tech tools
when I attended SHA 10 years ago.
Laptops and 3D printers weren’t accessible
at the high school level, but it is so exciting
to think about what our bright students
could do utilizing technology today. In the
absence of these high tech tools, we did have
many hands on opportunities in Physics

The mission of Sacred Heart Academy to bring about “union and reconciliation by awakening in our
community an awareness of the unconditional love God has for all people” is reinforced through
a community service requirement. Each young woman completes at least 20 hours of community
service annually; however, most students far exceed this.
During the
2013-2014 school year,
the young women of
Sacred Heart Academy gave
37,241 hrs
of their time and talents to
people, organizations and
causes in need of support.

HEART
H is for Hospitality
Steeped in the mission of
the Sisters of St. Joseph, we
aspire to foster passionate and
purposeful love of learning
within an environment of
Hospitality, Excellence,
Accountability, Respect, and
Truthfulness, to form
"Women of HEART" reflecting
God's inclusive love.
Each year, particular attention
is paid to one of the above
attributes. We embark on the
2014-2015 school year with
Hospitality in mind.
A Reflection by
Sister Jean Amore, Vice President
The Judeo-Christian vision of hospitality
always has to do with God and our covenant
with the God of Hospitality. God's presence
is to be discovered in the ordinary exchanges
between guests and hosts, but also in the out
of ordinary exchanges with the stranger—the
one who does not share our world, our
viewpoints, our space.
He came unto his own, and
his own did not accept him.
(John 1:11)
True hospitality is marked by an open
response to the dignity of each and every
person. It is not a place, but a state of being.
It is letting the other know she/he "fits in" and
belongs. It is not just opening the door; it is
having a welcoming countenance. Hospitality
makes anxious disciples into powerful
witnesses, makes suspicious owners into
generous givers, and makes, close-minded
sectarians into interested recipients of new
ideas and insights.
I am doing something new.
Here it is. Can you not see it?
(Isaiah 43:19)
Hospitality performs a transformation in
the way we think. It questions our ways of
thinking about ourselves and about others who
we label "different." It breaks down categories
that what is in the mind of the other. Listening
and dialogue are key. Hospitality provides
an occasion to discover something new, for
example, the disciples of Emmaus finally truly
recognize Jesus.
When the two disciples
came near the village..., they
begged Jesus, "Stay with us."
So Jesus sat down, took some
bread, blessed it and broke
it. ...And at once, they
knew who he was."
(Luke 24: 28-32)
Through the stranger, we are given a chance to
find ourselves. And through the stranger, God
finds us, and offers us the gift of wholeness in
the midst of our own estranged lives.
Hospitality is the way we turn a prejudiced
world around, one heart at a time. We image
God by reaching across differences to
participate in God's actions of bringing love,
justice, union and healing to our world.
When did we welcome you
as a stranger or give you
clothes or visit you when
you were sick or in jail?
Whenever you did it for any
of my people, no matter how
unimportant they seemed,
you did it for me.
(Matt 25:35)
Hospitality refuses to allow us to become snug
and secure in our small selves. Hospitality
intrudes on our schedules, makes demands on
our energy, pries open our closed minds, and
stretches our hearts to be bigger. Hospitality
brings God in the guise of the immediate and
the urgent, the uncomfortable and the
unknown. Hospitality is a visit from the God
of surprise who comes upon us and breaks us
open to a new part of ourselves as well as to
the needs of the other. Hospitality brings the
world in, places it at our feet, and dares us to
be who and what we say we are. Hospitality
creates community with stretchable,
permeable, illimitable boundaries made up of
anyone who happens to come into it at any
time and always saying, "We are here for you."
Be sure to welcome strangers
into your home. By doing
this, some people have
welcomed angels as guests,
without even knowing it.
(Hebrews 13:2)
May we be a channel of blessing
for all we meet.
