History and the Present Time

The town of Mariánské Lázně is
situated in a picturesque valley in
the midst of beautiful countryside.
The clean air, spa woods, magnificent
architecture, rich cultural, sport
and social life create the unique
atmosphere of this much sought after
spa town.
THE GOLDEN AGE

Mariánské Lázně was founded at the beginning of the 19
century. The Premonstratensians of the nearby Teplá Monastery deserve credit for the creation of the spa town; in particular, the Abbot Reitenberger and Dr. Nehr, the superintendent
of the Teplá Monastery, who wanted to develop a spa town
within the vicinity of the springs, which were in a marshy
and in a difficult-to-access valley. The garden architect Václav
Skalník was put in charge of the project draining the marshy

valley; and once the necessary landscaping had
been completed, he put the finishing touches to
the scenery making the parks gradually pass into
the forest growth. Afterwards, the construction of
buildings, spa facilities, individual spring pavilions and the colonnade commenced.
The majority of the spa buildings in Mariánské Lázně date back to the 2nd half of the 19th
century. This golden age witnessed an un-
precedented boom of the spa town. Mariánské Lázně
became a world famous and a much sought-after spa
location.
PROMINENT VISITORS
Prominent visitors included J. W. Goethe, M. Twain,
N. V. Gogol, J. Strauss, F. Chopin, R. Wagner, T. A.
Edison, and many other celebrities and famous artists
from all around the world; A. Dvořák and E. Destinová, among others, represented the famous Czech
artists who visited the spas. HRM Edward VII, King of
England used to rank among the most regular guests;
he visited Mariánské Lázně nine times in total (1897 1909) and in 1904 he met with the Austro-Hungarian
Emperor, Franz Joseph I, here.

THE PRESENT TIME
Mariánské Lázně is undoubtedly one of the most charming spa places in the Czech Republic. The spa history is
not long but for that, all the more interesting. The elegant
town and all its modern buildings originated in the place
which only in the 18th century was still dominated by
swamps and impenetrable forests.
The spa atmosphere of the turn of the 19th century has
remained preserved. The spa and tourism industry has
become prevalent in Mariánské Lázně, and in order to
preserve the unique natural characteristics any industrial production has been significantly reduced.
SPORT ACTIVITIES
The town can offer a wide range of sporting and cultural
activities to its visitors. The well marked paths are nicely
maintained and offer lovely views and hidden corners.
People who enjoy an active life-style might like to have a
game of golf and tennis, going hiking, cycling, horse riding or yachting, or they can make use of the swimming
pools and natural outdoor pools. In winter, there is a ski

the Casino Cultural and Conference Centre.
The theatre offers various theatrical performances and concerts, and in summer one might
enjoy a concert in the colonnades. We should
not forget to mention the Singing Fountain,
as listening to it is certainly an exceptional experience; it begins to “sing” every odd hour
and in the evening the music is brought to life
with light effects. The Chopin Music Festival
and the festivities and ceremonies related to
the opening of the spa season and to the consecration of the springs are also integral parts
of a life in this spa town.

Natural Medicinal Sources
Mariánské Lázně
Mariánské Lázně is well-known for
the abundance of natural medicinal
sources. More than one hundred
mineral springs rise within the wider
vicinity of the town, and there are
about forty springs in the town itself.
All these mineral springs are cold
acidulous springs with temperatures
between 7°C and 10°C. The springs
differ in their chemical composition,
which has an impact on the actual
programme of medicinal drinking
water used for various disorders. The
amount of water prescribed for the
programme varies according to the
diagnosis and the health condition of
the client – generally 1.5 – 2 litres per
day. Mineral springs of Mariánské
Lázně are also used for inhalations
and mineral baths.

MINERAL SPRINGS
The Cross Spring (Křížový pramen)
In view of its therapeutic effects, this spring is primarily used for the treatment of disorders of the digestive
tract (stomach complaints, intestines disorders, gall
bladder complaints, and liver and pancreas disorders),
metabolic disorders (obesity, gout, diabetes mellitus)
and allergies related to digestion disorders. The sulphate content in the water has a laxative effect.
The Ferdinand Spring (Ferdinandův pramen)
The Ferdinand Spring consists of seven individual springs,
of which the spring Ferdinand I is accessible for drinking.
Its composition is very similar to the Cross Spring; but
the mineral content is somewhat higher. The Ferdinand
Springs is bottled and served as table water under the
brand name of Excelsior.

The Rudolph Spring (Rudolfův pramen)
Due to its diuretic effect, it is used to treat kidney complaints and disorders of the urinary
tract. The spring has a very high level of calcium (the ratio of calcium and magnesium being 5:4). Therefore, the mineral drinking water
is recommended as a supplementary therapy
in the treatment of osteoporosis. Its distinctive anti-inflammatory effects make it useful in
treating urethritis.
The Ambrose Spring (Ambrožův pramen)
The Forest Spring (Lesní pramen)
This spring water is used as medicinal drinking water to
cure disorders of the gastro-intestinal tract, and it is also

The Ambrose Spring consists of three individual springs, all of which have very similar

rous acidulous and have a low mineral content. Due to
their high ferric content, they are used to cure certain
forms of anaemia and its diuretic effects make it useful in treating some urinary tract disorders, lithiasis in
particular.
The Caroline Spring (Karolinin pramen)
Due to its higher content of magnesium (the ratio of calcium and magnesium content being 2:5), the Caroline
Spring water is used for treatment of urological complaints
and kidney stones. The magnesium contained in the water
prevents the formation of these concrements.
NATURAL MEDICINAL GAS CO2
The Marie Spring (Mariin pramen)
The Marie Spring is actually a powerful gas seepage (99.7%
natural CO2). The natural medicinal gas is applied in the
form of dry carbon gas baths. This procedure is becoming
more and more popular since guests not only show lower
blood pressure, an improvement of heart activity and improved blood circulation in the lower extremities, but also
a significant improvement of sexual activities. In addition,
this natural medicinal gas is also applied in the form of hypodermic applications as a part of the treatment of joint
disorders, spine problems and heart ischaemia.
PELOIDS – PEAT, MUD
Peloids are inorganic and organic pottages, which are,
after certain modification and heating, used for compresses and wraps. They are made of peat and other
mud, which can be found around springs. The material
is stocked in piles, where it oxidises in a certain way.
Then it is modified and mixed with mineral water and
steamed. It is used for 20 – 30 minutes once it reaches
the temperature 40° C.
Peat wraps are used for treating locomotive system disorders, gynaecologic complaints and respiratory system dis-
orders. Special additional treatment is offered
in the form of peat vaginal tampons, which are
used for curing chronic gynaecologic inflammations and sterility in women.

in 1996 reflecting the long tradition of high expertise

Locomotive system disorders
Vertebrogenous algic syndrome (backache), degenerative
disorders of locomotive system (spine and large joints),
osteoporosis, post-operation conditions following orthopaedic surgery (endoprothesis).
Kidney disorders and disorders of the urinary tract
Chronic inflammations, conditions following operations of
kidney and urinary stones or crushing them with shockwaves,
kidney and urinary tract post-operation conditions, prostate
disorders (inflammations, post-operation conditions).
Acute and infectious diseases.
Frequent recurrence of profuse bleeding of
any kind.
Tumours in the course of therapy and after, when
clinically detectable that the disease is progressing.
Alcohol addiction, addictive drugs dependence.
Pregnancy.
Inability to attend to one’s own needs and
daily functions without the assistance of another person, inability to walk.

SPA TREATMENTS FROM NATURAL
MEDICINAL SOURCES
Mineral bath
The bath is taken in mineral water with a high content of CO2, mineral salts and humic acids at the temperature of 28 – 34°C. Carbon dioxide is absorbed by
the skin; it increases the rate of blood circulation, and
positively affects the heart and kidneys. What’s more,
carbon dioxide baths have anti-stress effect if taken repeatedly. Various herbal extracts or the Dead Sea salt
may be added into the mineral baths. The bath lasts
approximately 20 minutes and it is followed by a 20
minute rest in a dry wrap.
Indication: heart and vascular system disorders, kidney
and urinary tract disorders, nervous system disorders.
Counter–indication: cardiac decompensation, epilepsy,
tendency of hypotension.
Dry carbon gas bath
The natural Maria’s gas, seeping out in Mariánské
Lázně, is used for this treatment. This gas is of volcanic
origin and contains 99.7 % CO2. It is used in the form
of dry gas baths and gas applications. The gas is also
absorbed through clothes. It affects vasodilatation and
directly effects skin receptors. It improves blood circulation, has anti-inflammatory effect, accelerates the
healing of wounds and positively affects kidney activity.
Maria’s gas stimulates production of sexual hormones
testosterone and oestradiol; this is why it is successfully used for the improvement of sexual functions of
men and women and to relieve menopausal symptoms
in females. The gas is pumped into plastic bags which
are then applied onto the body.
Indication: ischaemic disorder of lower limbs, hypertension, gynaecologic and urologic indications, sexual
functions disorders.

Maria’s gas is applied into the hypodermic area
of large joints and the spine. The principle effect it produces is the abatement of pain, the
improvement of the rate of blood circulation in
certain areas and the acceleration of healing.
Indication: disorders of blood circulation in
limbs, ischaemic heart disorder, painful degenerative disorders of joints and the spine.
Counter–indication: local inflammation of
skin and hypodermis in the area of application, bleeding.
Peat pack
Peat is used for locomotive system disorders,
gynaecological disorders and respiratory tract
disorders in the form of wraps. It is a form of
thermal therapy. The heat improves the blood
circulation rate and the local metabolism,

thereby accelerating the absorption of chronic inflammatory
infiltrates; it softens connective tissues and loosens up skeletal
muscles as well as smooth muscles of the inner organs.
Indication: locomotive system disorders, disorders of respiratory tract, urologic and gynaecologic disorders, disorders of
digestive system.
Counter-indication: not suitable for guests suffering from
cardiovascular disorders, for guests after brain incidence and
oncological operations.
Inhalations
Mineral water used for inhalations, improves the mucosa function of the respiratory system, produces anti-inflammatory effects, liquefies mucus and make expectoration easier. Medicines
may be added to the mineral water to relieve severe dyspnoea; in
addition, natural salts and herbal extracts may be added to treat
catarrhs in the upper air passages.
Kneipp´s therapy
Kneipp´s therapy is a part of a water treatment, when the alternative effect of hot and cold water is used. This supports
tissue metabolism and blood circulation. In Kneipp’s pool
you alternatively walk through water of the temperature of 40
- 42° C and cold mineral water of the temperature of 10 – 16°
C. While walking you hold onto a handrail and raise your
knees. You always finish the procedure in cold mineral water
and dry your limbs properly with a bath towel.
Indication: This procedure is suitable for headaches, neurovegetative dystonia, cold feet syndrome, initial stages of varicose vein disorders, and relaxation of ankles and leg and feet
joints.
Medicinal drinking water
The medicinal drinking water programme is an important and,
for kidney and urinary tract disorders it is the essential part of
a spa treatment. The programme consists of drinking a certain
amount of mineral water 1 – 3 times a day as prescribed by the

doctor. The recommended amount is 1.5 – 2 l per
day. The organism is affected by the temperature,
chemical composition and the volume of the medicinal drinking water. It influences urine composition by inducing water diuresis, it stimulates the
kidneys into faster activity and positively affects intestine peristalsis. By drinking mineral water before
your meals, you can increase the efficiency of mineral substances and their better absorption. It is very
important to set up the correct regime of drinking
medicinal waters. The peaceful atmosphere of the
spa town encourages you to increase your fluid intake in a gentle way. It is desirable that you develop
a habit to drink more medicinal water even after you
return home.

Singing Fountain – is formed by a circular
pool 18 m in diameter with a 12-piece stone
sculpture in a conventionalised flower form. It
usually operates from May until October, and
plays every odd hour. Compositions take part
in periodic order.
Nature Reserve Kladská – beautiful and protected environment with a lake and wooden
cottages.
Brewery Chodovar – original local brewery
founded in 1783 with brewery museum and
the ‘Restaurant in a Cave’.
Castle Kynžvart – one of the most visited chateaux with a unique collection of works of art
and curiosities.
Teplá Monastery – founded in 1193 by the
blessed Hroznata, a Czech Noble, unique Library – second biggest in the Czech Republic.

connection and where our qualified team of colleagues
will answer your questions, book accommodation, procedures, trips or fulfil your requests.
On request, it is possible to arrange transfers to the individual spa hotels of our
company. We can arrange transfers from
the airports from Prague, Karlovy Vary,
Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin, and Nuremberg with a taxi or minibus. Other destinations are on request.
