Our entire staff is looking forward to an exciting and productive new school year. I am happy to announce that the entire administrative team will be returning for another year at Washington. I believe Dr. Erica Donahue, Mr. Jeff Speckels, and Mrs. Nathania Chaney- Aiello are some of the best Assistant Principals in the district and I want to encourage you to take advantage of their assistance. Mr. Speckels is responsible for 11th grade students, and Dr. Donahue will continue to work with the students who are now in 12th grade. Mrs. Chaney-Aiello will be handing all 10th grade related activities and issues, and Mr. Speckels, Dr. Donahue and Mrs. Chaney-Aiello will split responsibility for 9thth grade students. Communication will again be a top priority for my administrative team. We are committing to returning all phone calls and e-mails within 24 hours. We are proud to be offering three new course selections this year: A.P. Physics C, A.P. Computer Science and Culinary Arts. The Laptop Academy will now serve 9th grade students at the Honors and College Prep levels and will be offered to juniors for the first time this year. The Engineering Pathway program, Project Lead the Way, is continuing to be offered and is comprised of two sequential courses for sophomores and juniors: Introduction to Design and Principles of Engineering. Both of these courses qualify for A-G subject requirement credit from U.C. Students taking Introduction of Design will receive “f” credit necessary for applying to State and U.C. universities, and students taking Principals of Engineering will receive “g” credit. Washington is again offering 0 period P.E. for sophomores to accommodate their often crowded schedules. The primary goal of my administrative team is to support the academic interactions between students and teachers, and to create and support systems that will help students achieve their academic goals. I can’t emphasize enough that the administrative team, and the counselors at Washington are here to be of service to students and families of the Washington community. All students should leave high school with the necessary skills and information to pursue their post graduate dreams. I feel extremely fortunate to be Principal of Washington High School. I am looking forward to the new school year and working hard for the Washington school community. I would like to extend an invitation to all parents and guardians to visit the campus and to find ways to get involved. Welcome back, Huskies. With the 2016-2017 school year right around the corner, ASB would like to wish all of you the best of luck this upcoming year and update you all on the latest news and information. Maze day will take place on August 23rd for Juniors and Seniors and August 24th for Freshmen and Sophomores. At maze students can purchase their class shirt, class package, yearbooks, community discount card, as well as many more essential items. Additionally, students will receive an ID and a locker. Items and prices are listed below. Online sales will begin August 18th. Maze items can be purchased here: https://cafremont-whs.intouchreceipting.com/ The first day of school is August 31st which is a minimum day. We will also be holding a first day rally for students to get an exciting start to the school year. On September 8th, Seniors will be going on their Senior picnic. Tickets can be purchased at maze and in the Student Center once the school year starts. The Hello Dance will be on September 9th at the pool deck. Come out for a fun night of dancing and games! Club rush will take place September 14th and 15th during lunch on the lawn. Students can get a chance to experience and learn more about the clubs on campus. The first Blood Drive of the year will be on September 23rd. Students must be 16 or older with parent consent in order to donate. Students over 18 do not need consent. To celebrate the 125th school year WHS will also be holding an all school reunion! Come out for a wonderful day of BBQ, games, and music. Tickets are on sale at washingtonasb.com. Each student turns in all required paperwork that is attached to this newsletter. Students take their school photo, purchase ASB cards, yearbooks, Husky Planners, pick out a locker and get one (as long as you have a lock), sign up for clubs and class activities, receive their schedule and get their textbooks. There is no makeup day for this event so it is critical that you come at your assigned time (not your friend’s time). Underclassmen may NOT come with an older sibling. If you come at the wrong time you will be asked to leave. We have added the option of using all credit cards. We are hoping this will be a help for parents at the beginning of the year. Check out our website. To pay for your ASB card, yearbooks, Husky Planner, etc. prior to Maze, go to https://ca-fremont-whs.intouchreceipting.com/ and click on the ASB link. Make sure to print a copy of your purchases and you’ll be able to get through MAZE day quickly. Remember, signing up for an ASB card saves you $$$ throughout the year. Also, for every ASB card purchased, $2 goes to the Hatchet to help with publications (free copy to ASB cardholders) and $3 goes to the general fund for WHS Athletics. Card – I.D.’s must be carried by the student at all times; Your picture will be taken free of charge for your I.D. card; lost I.D.’s must be purchased in the front office for $5.00 Husky Planner – Most teachers require a homework log which is accessible in this book. The student handbook provides school rules, graduation requirements, general school information, and school activity calendar along with school rules. A must have for all students. It is punched with holes allowing use in or out of a binder. Washington High School Associated Student Body (WHS ASB) The goal of ASB is to bring together all groups, clubs, sports teams, extracurricular activities empowering these special interest groups and provide the support in programming, technical and administrative support. When we work together we are constantly amazed at what we can accomplish. In order to run this level of programming it takes money. We ask all students to purchase ASB stickers. This donation is used to put on MAZE , assemblies, noon rallies, Spirit week and Homecoming, dances, computers in the student center, lighting for school productions, Husky Gear, Multi-Cultural Week, sports at lunch, elections, end of the year slide show, digital cameras, security cameras, and whatever else we think of! Hope you get the picture! Your money allows us to serve all areas of the school. Every Friday is Orange and Black Day! PE Uniforms All PE students (ALL GRADES) are required to wear a PE uniform .The uniforms are available for purchase at $20.00 ($10.00 per piece; which includes black shorts and a white T-shirt with logo). SIGN UP FOR YOUR LOCKER DURING MAZE DAYS You must have your combination lock with you when you sign up for a locker! LOCKER RULES Seniors: Top lockers in the 10's, 40's, or 50's wings; bottom locker in 10's, 30’s, 40's, 50's Juniors: Bottom lockers in 10's, 30’s,40's, 50's or any available upper lockers after senior maze Sophomores: Lockers in the 60's wing, or in upper or lower Eggers Building Freshmen: Lockers in the 20's wing Locker registration will be done in the student center after you go through the Maze. The cost of registering for a locker is $2 per locker. No lockers are to be shared. You are liable for any school rules broken within your locker. FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL ABSENCE POLICY: The FUSD policy states students must be in class the first day of school (August 31, 2016) or risk losing their space at their assigned school. If the student is not in class the first day of school, the student may be transferred to another site on the second day of school if classrooms at the original school are full. This change will not apply to students who are ill if the child’s parent/guardian informs the school. The policy allows FUSD to respond to issues of overcrowding more efficiently and minimize cases of students being forced to switch schools during the first week of the school year. The change will also assist school staff in avoiding unnecessary time and phone calls tracking down students and families who may no longer be living in the District. When calling in your child’s absence, please leave the following information: Student’s name (please spell slowly) and grade level Date of absence Reason for the absence and the possible duration of absence Person calling and their relation to the student If your child needs an off-grounds pass, please send him/her with a signed note specifying the time and date he/she will need to be picked up to his/her attendance clerk before the start of the school day. We will not call and interrupt the classroom during instructional time. Remember, the student’s cell phone must be off during the classroom time – please do not call their cell phone to have them come and meet you. This will not excuse him/her and will only cause their cell phones to be confiscated for the day. You will then need to sign to pick up the phone after school is out. But how is your child really doing in school?? Your child is no longer a child that appears to need you as much. You have a teenager and at this age he/she wants to be very independent! But they need you now more than you may think. Your guidance and watchful eye are critical. In the Counseling Department, we see instances regularly where a parent is unaware of their student’s falling grades and it often comes too late in the semester. When parents ask their student how they are doing in school, the response they frequently get is the typical “fine” and they leave it at that. Parents: You must dig deeper! There are plenty of cases where students minimize the grade problems, take progress reports out of the mailbox so their parents won’t see them or boldly lie about their grades! Take nothing for granted: Check the facts yourself! And you can do so from home so that it will not take too much of your time: School Loop: Many of you are already dialed in and using School Loop regularly. Terrific! We want every parent checking School Loop WEEKLY! School Loop will provide you with email access with all school personnel, class assignments and tests, academic progress, calendar of events and school news. Access information is provided in this newsletter. Email teachers, counselors and administrators through School Loop: This is an effective way to communicate and often gets a quicker response, and you don’t run the risk of a missed call if trying to make contact by phone. Phone or make an appointment with teachers, counselors and administrators: Always call and make an appointment when a meeting is needed. Weekly Progress Reports: Students who are having grade issues can benefit from taking a Weekly Progress Report to their teachers on Fridays to complete. Your student brings the form to you so that you can see their grades and missed assignments and respond accordingly. Parents can initiate Weekly Progress Reports at any time and they are available at the Attendance Window for parent/student pickup or on our website under the Counseling tab. Check the daily bulletin and school calendar for events, learn about graduation and college prep requirements and more. Every page of the website can be translated into a dozen languages by clicking on the translation button at the top of the page! Naviance: Get your own login to the college and career information website that our school subscribes to. Your student has an account as well and together, you can explore colleges and careers. Go to the WHS website and select Counseling tab > Counseling Dept. > Naviance for login information. PTSA: Join PTSA and be a part of our school community through this organization! Parents who are involved in their child’s school do better in school—this applies to high school as well! Boosters: Join Boosters and help make all of our sports programs a success! School Activities: Encourage your student to get involved in a school activity. Students who are involved in something they enjoy at school get better grades! Contact your student’s counselor when you have a concern: We are here to help your student be successful in high school! SCHEDULE CHANGES The Board of Education for Fremont Unified has approved the first three weeks of classes during each semester for adding and dropping courses. Level changes in courses can take place through the first five weeks of the school year. SCHEDULE CHANGES ARE DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS WHO’S SCHEDULE HAS AN ERROR. THE COURSES THAT STUDENTS REGISTERED FOR WILL BE THE COURSES THAT THE STUDENT WILL TAKE UNLESS THERE IS AN ERROR. An error is defined as: Misplacement: A level change in the same subject area is academically necessary. The student is missing a required class. ADD/DROP PERIOD FOR FALL 2016 The Add/Drop period is 3 weeks in duration and ends on September 21 (5 week period for the purpose of changing levels within the same subject) From MAZE, beginning on August 23, through September 7, the only schedule changes that will be addressed are: Level changes & misplacement Scheduling errors: The student’s schedule: Is missing a required class or a class from the registration form From Wednesday, September 7 through Wednesday, September 21, students will have the opportunity to submit the Elective/Level Schedule Change form to request one elective change or adjust the level of a course. Below are the instructions taken from the Elective/Level Schedule Change form that students use to request schedules changes beginning September 2. ROP changes: Go to the Career Center to check availability for other ROP courses. Even after this form is completed, a change request may NOT be possible due to present class size, schedule conflicts or lack of prerequisite requirements. Requests are for classes only; not teachers. Switching classes to different periods cannot be accommodated. Each student is allowed to apply for ONE Elective and Level schedule change only and the change will be permanent. The Add/Drop period ends 3 weeks after the first day of school and Level changes end after 5 weeks. A limited list of electives offered will be posted for students to make their selections from. Students can inquire with their counselor about the availability of upper level science and math courses. WHS is committed to getting students placed in the right grade level courses for graduation and the correct ability level as quickly as possible, while elective course changes hold a lesser priority. Scholarships Last year, PTSA awarded $1,500 in Scholarships to deserving 2016 graduates. WHS seniors who join PTSA are eligible for WHS PTSA and state scholarships. You do not have to be a parent of a student athlete to support the Boosters, so please consider joining. We have a large number of young men and women who participate in Washington’s Athletic Programs. Many more participate as spectators, socializing at games, and cheering on their classmates. A strong sports program keeps kids involved and builds school pride. Over the last several years, our teams have won numerous league championships and made it to the NCS playoffs. Who are the Huskies Boosters? We are a group of community members – parents, teachers, students, alumni, coaches, business owners, and neighbors – who help support our teams by donating and raising funds, running snack bars at home games, and helping at sporting events. How do the Boosters help? In recent years we have supported projects that benefit all students, as well as those for specific teams. We have raised funds to buy uniforms and equipment, pool lane lines and bleachers; sports software for editing and film review; gym snack bar and much more. We also award Senior Athletes each year with scholarships. What can you do? Join us! And work with us to help make all of our sports programs a success. Your paid membership and any additional donation will be used to fund important athletic expenses that can’t be covered otherwise. STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE School Year 2016 – 2017 Dear Parent/Guardian: Fremont Unified School District does not provide insurance for students injured on school property, during school activities, or while participating in athletic events. There is student/athletic accident insurance available through Pacific Educators Insurance Services which provides insurance coverage for your child. The student accident insurance is offered at a one-time annual payment for the entire school year. The insurance plan does not provide unlimited coverage, but does offer assistance in the event of an injury. This insurance notice is made in accordance with Education Code sections 49470-49472 and District Board Policy 5143. The district has no specific interest in Pacific Educators Insurance Services or any other insurance company, and enrollment is voluntary.
