SMALL WONDERS DOLL from from the the director director We LOVE the summer here at the Doll Museum - so much is happening- the kids are out of school, people travel here on vacation from far and wide and include the Museum in their itinerary, our Lace Exhibit has become very popular with doll people and the general public (who doesn’t love lace?), we have finally started our Summer Story Time (more on this on page five), summer camp kids are visiting as well as senior groups out for a day of fun, the Rose Room is bustling with birthday celebrants, and, oh, the roses in the rose garden! If you can tear yourself away from YOUR garden or your job or whatever, we would love to welcome you and yours to the Museum to join in on the activities or for a quiet tour of the exhibits. We believe “The World Embellished-Lace!” has something for everyone. If you love dolls, you’ll find them from many time periods lavish in their lace finery. If costume is what you’re all about, lace is represented from several centuries, most of which is handmade. Do you sew? This exhibit couldn’t be more compelling and inspiring. From bolts of lace with special provenance to a tiny wisp of a particularly special piece, you will see how other sewers have chosen to incorporate this remarkable handwork into costuming Continued on Page 2... PAGE ONE from the director ...Continued From Page 1 of old. Dolls, paintings on ivory, baby dresses and gowns, gloves, and shoes- all on exhibit now. If research is your thing, there will be much to entice and intrigue you and perhaps compel you to “look further”. Though I cannot even bring myself to think of this exhibit disappearing into the storage cabinets, I must admit Jules Steiner is calling me. Look for his matchless beauties coming in October to the Changing Gallery- “Jules Steiner: The Great Innovator”, October 23, 2010 thru May 15, 2011. (See a little preview from our Permanent Gallery in Spotlight In the Gallery on page four.) This wonderful exhibit will be on exhibit through the holidays to share with your family and on in to Spring as we are sure one viewing will not be enough! Our current exhibit, “The World Embellished – Lace!” will remain open through October 17th. We hope you will pay it and us a visit very soon! Have a wonderful summer. Jill Gorman Curator Museum Featured In Doll News We deeply thank our dear friend Dorothy McGonagle and DOLL NEWS MAGAZINE for the charming article they did on the Museum in the summer issue. Members of United Federation of Doll Clubs should have received their issue by now. It is the obvious tale told by a true friend who sees through a veil of memories as well as by a true doll lover and expert. We are humbled by her words and thrilled for the obvious adventure she experienced with her two grandchildren, Hope and River, as they toured the Museum together. Seeing the dolls through the eyes and hearts of children is, indeed, revealing and touching. Their openness, tenderness, and inquisitiveness allow us to share and experience at a different and often deeper level than we would ever anticipate. Over the many years of our friendship Dorothy and her late husband Jerome have been instrumental in our acquiring many important and wonderful dolls along with some priceless provenance. Thanks go also to Doll News Editors Michael Canadas and David Robinson for handing this assignment to Dorothy as well as the amazing job they are doing. Our magazine is in good hands! A dared Life Well-LivedOur French Fashion Exhibit and all in the name of dolls. Our dear friend and Museum Docent, ATHA KAHLER, passed away on May 12 after a heroic battle with pancreatic cancer. To say she will be sorely missed in the doll world is just a glimpse into the impact Atha had in so many areas of which she had interest. She was also an avid sewer, a devout Christian, a doting mother and grandmother, and a true leader. As a member of the Seattle Doll and Toy Collectors Club she served as its president seven times beginning in 1967! In 1968, she chaired the first and only UFDC Nat’l Convention in Seattle, Washington. Between then and right up until she left this earth, Atha has shared, chaired, snared, prepared, and, yes, SMALL WONDERS Fellow club members delight in telling tales of Atha and how involved she always kept us with Regional and National Conferences, as well as local events involving our mutual hobby of doll collecting. She volunteered to be a docent at the Museum as soon as she heard about its construction. Atha ran our sewing group, encouraged clubs and individuals to visit and support the Museum, and helped at many jobs here and our Rosie’s Too store. After her retirement she was free to spend a week or more at UFDC headquar ters in Kansas volunteering her knowledge, time, and energy to the organization. the UFDC Librar y have been dedicated to her for the services she provided both institutions through the years. Farewell, Atha, you showed us how, but we will miss you and the doll world will never be the same without you. Donations in her memory can be made to the Virginia Gordon and Atha Kahler Scholarship Fund at UFDC. PAGE TWO From the Museum Store... SMALL WONDERS PAGE THREE Spotlight in the Gallery Many of our visitors are surprised and delighted by the amazing dolls they “find” in the Museum drawers. It is our way of providing more for you without overwhelming. Today we want to talk about a particularly wonderful A Figure Steiner with a charming provenance that will remain in her special drawer Our all original Steiner, c1895, in her drawer filled with other goodies. throughout the upcoming Steiner exhibit- “Jules Steiner: The Great Innovator” October 23, 2010 to May 15, 2011.. We thought she should be brought to everyone’s attention as a lovely example of that maker’s work as well as a well-preserved doll whose owner was responsible enough to keep her family photo with her. She is resplendent in a pink silk outfit including umbrella and a copy of her photograph with her “little girl” which is also enlarged on the wall beside her. The Figure A Steiner bebes were some of the most popular of his dolls, with beautiful creamy bisque, deep paperweight eyes, and wonderful jointed bodies. The clothes were usually lavish French frocks appropriate for the well-off child of the late 1800s. This little lady rests securely and demurely in a drawer beneath the “Dolls With Stories” exhibit in our upstairs gallery. She would enjoy your visit. N E W S Here she sits with her ownerspecial enough to keep pristine and photograph together.
