Meeting
As reported in the last
issue of TOTN, the
pedestrianization of the
frontline in Puerto Pollensa
is about to start. The council
will be holding a meeting
for local residents to see the
amendments that have been
proposed by the council.
It was originally scheduled
for Tuesday 27th but was
postponed due to last minute
details that the Consell
de Mallorca and Pollensa
Council need to discuss.
These too will be presented at
the meeting.
Residents are encouraged
to attend to voice their
opinions. The meeting will
be on Friday 30th, 8pm is
the ‘salón parroquial’ (parish
hall), in Puerto Pollensa.

Bridge Vandalized
The old
bridge that
crosses
the stream
of San
Jordi and
connects the
town with
Ternelles,
was recently
vandalized
with
graffiti.
An early
addition
to the
FRE
E!
infrastructure of the town, it
is considered one of Pollensa’s
main heritage attractions. It’s
estimated to have been built
in 1403. Despite its name, it
seems, according to the city
council that the bridge was
in fact built in the medieval
period, perhaps a few years
after the conquest, and was
known as the bridge of
Cubelles.
Having stood there for
so long, it has only just
fallen victim to vandalism.
Thankfully, the council acted
quickly to have the damage
fixed.

New Tourism Tools for Pollensa
The council of Pollensa will
launch its new website and
a new tourism product,
‘Tourism and Sports’ this
Friday 30th at 10 am at the
Miguel Capllonch Cultural
Centre in Puerto Pollensa.
It’s an open event, anyone can
go along and see the projects
before they are submitted to
the upcoming World Travel
Market in London, where the
town will have a stand as part
of the Balearic Government’s
contingency.
The council has worked
hard over the summer to get
everything ready for the 2016
season and, while the tourist
website www.Pollensa.com
was launched during the last
term, it needed a lot of work
to add information other
than just accommodation.
The new site will offer a
wide range of information to
visitors of Pollensa ranging
from accommodation, to
restaurants, shops, and leisure
as well as a detailed fiesta
programme.
The new ‘Tourism and Sports’
concept, is a tourist package
especially designed for the
athletes that come to the
island from around the world.
Sporting facilities in both
Pollensa and Puerto Pollensa
will help athletes train and
compete while staying in
accommodation geared
towards their sporting needs.
Both the website and the
tourist package will be
presented on Friday 30
October at 10 am at the
Miguel Capllonch Cultural
Centre Puerto Pollensa,
during an open event aimed
at anyone who wants to know
more about the council’s work.

Rescue team in
action
The Bombers de Mallorca and
the Guardia Civil, supported
by the Helicopter Corps,
teamed up to rescue a twelve
year old boy who had injured
his ankle while walking along
Cala Murta in Formentor last
Saturday afternoon. The boy
was with his father and three
other adults but the evening
was closing in around the
mountainous area and his
injury prevented the group
from walking on.
Firefighters with mountain
equipment from Inca and
Sóller came to the area
known as Es Fumat and fit a
splint on the wounded ankle
before the arrival of the Civil
Guard helicopter. Thankfully
access was relatively easy, and
the approach did not entail
excessive risk. The teenager
was fine, although sore from
the fall, and the helicopter
evacuated him to the hospital
in Espases, where doctors
confirmed that the condition
was not serious.
Anticorruption
charges
Judicial Police officers took a
new batch of documentation
(the second time this month)
relating to the hiring of
Nord Esport Balear SA
from Alcudia townhall last
week. The prosecutor is
investigating the alleged
relationship between some
of the council’s municipal
officers and the company
after a complaint was
registered in the spring of
2014 concerning the working
relationship. The prosecution
is trying to prove the veracity
of the complaint describing
alleged irregularities in the
contractual relationship
between the council and
the company. The complaint
speaks of a repeated breach
of the conditions of the
contracts, which were
awarded directly — or
negotiated with Social
Services always on a very
tight time frame — to Nord
Esport Balear.
Special Protection
status upheld
The Minister of the
Environment, Agriculture
and Fisheries, Vicenç Vidal,
has announced that the
Government will dismiss
the appeal lodged by the
promoter of the golf course
Son Bosc (Muro) against
the declaration of a Special
Protection Area (SPA). Vidal
announced that Son Bosc
will “definitely be protected,”
claiming, “What’s Son Bosc:
a protected natural area or
a golf course? …The farm
has to be a natural area
protected because of its high
environmental value.”
Eleonora’s falcon and orchid
Prat are among the species
that can be found in the ten
hectares of Son Bosc and as
it is declared an SPA, part of
European protection scheme,
the autonomous community
has a duty to enforce it.
The statement will close
the door to any golf course
development and confirms
that the Balearic Government
acted correctly when, in
August 2010, it halted work
on the golf course at Son
Bosc, which would have
affected the SPA of the
Albufera de Mallorca.
Child Car Safety
enforcement
Local Police in Sa Pobla began
an awareness campaign this
week on the use of seatbelts,
helmets and child restraint
systems in passenger cars,
motorcycles, mopeds and
bicycles. Local police are

compulsory for the driver
and all occupants of his or
her car to make proper use
of approved safety belts, both
for driving on urban and
interurban roads. All children
under 135cm in height have to
use child safety seats in cars.
Battle of the
Bottelón
The authorities in Inca are
determined to limit the illegal
drinking parties during this
year’s Dimecres Bo (the party
before Inca’s market, Dijous
Bo). The party has been held
every year for more than 20
years but complaints from
residents and market traders
remains the same.
Measures will be put in place
this year to limit the illegal
‘street-drinking’. This year,
bars can have a license to set
up a temporary bar outside
their premises and the party
will be limited to Calle del
Born and Plaza de l’Àngel. An
entertainment complex will be
set up at Avenue General Luque.
As well as a more controlled
drinking area, local police
officers will be monitoring
the city, especially at the entry
points of the city centre. Main
access points to Inca will also
be patrolled by the Guardia
Civil who will be conducting
drink-driving tests.
Radio Pollensa
director reinstalled
The municipality of Pollença
reported last week that Joana
Solivelles has been appointed
the new director of Radio
Pollença. The selection
process was held over recent
weeks. Solivelles was the
director until June this year
and officially reinstalled after
some modification of the
organic staff of the council.
Memorial
maintenance
The Associació per a la
dels Revitalització Antics
Centres (ARCA) has asked
the Council of Pollensa to
aid the conservation and
maintenance of a monument,
which is located in Cala San
Vincente, that is dedicated to
Republican prisoners.
The monument was erected
by the town in 2005 in
memory of the prisoners
were forced to build roads
between 1937 and 1940.
ARCA believes that in some
cases vandalism or over time,
items of this nature are in
danger of disappearing. They
have urged the protection of
these memorials because they
“remind us of our history
that we should not repeat, the
only way to do this is to have
memory and conscience.”
Opposition get
down to work
Just like he told TOTN in
the summer, David Alonso
has been hard at work in
opposition at the Pollensa
Townhall. A press release
last week stated that
Alonso had presented six
motions, 36 questions and
5 pleas in the town’s recent
meetings. The motions were
diverse, ranging from the
humanitarian emergency
measures for refugees from
Syria, to those related to
improving infrastructure,
highlighting the proposed
construction of a roundabout
at the junction of Cala San
Vincente by the Consell de
Mallorca.
Another motion also
submitted by the municipal
group calls for the
construction of a kitchen
in the Secondary School
‘Guillem Cifre Colonya’.

In Alcudia, the deputy mayor,
Josep Melià of el Pi will
be taking the government
team to task regarding the
altered route of the power
line from Puerto Alcudia.
Melia requested information
on whether it has made any
alternative route and if it has
kept to budget.
El Pi noted that the two
parties that form the
Government, PSOE and Mes,
promised a new route of the
power line in Alcudia. The bill
passed in 2008 was amended.
Originally the route passed
near the Norai school and
health centre, a solution that
has caused much controversy
among the population of the
coastal village.

Urban Tax to be
reduced
The new administration of
Pollença, has set a goal of
reducing the tax burden on
town residents. At this week’s
council meeting the council
will debate a proposal by the
mayor which aims to reduce
the Property Tax (IBI),
both urban and rustic, in
percentages ranging between
7.8 and 10%.
Mayor, Miquel Angel March
(Junts Avançam), said the
reduction will be greater in
urban real estate, which will
pay 10% less from next year.
Thus, the tax rate will move
from 0.50 to 0.45, which
will result in a reduction of
approximately €800,000.
Regarding the rural property,
the reduction will be 7.8
percent. To make this
possible, the tax rate is
reduced from 0.7 to 0.63.
The mayor stated that the
purpose of this reduction is to
“reduce the tax burden on the
citizens of the municipality,
we must bear in mind that
we come from a crisis and
therefore should reduce the
tax burden on taxpayers.” The
government team is confident
that the municipal coffers can
cope with this reduction. If
the reduction meets approval
at this week’s council
meeting, the resolution will
then be open to the public for
a period of 30 days.
Marine reserve
called for
The Balearic Federation of
‘Confraries de Pescadors’
(Brotherhood of Fisherman)
have asked the Ministry of
the Environment, Agriculture
and Fishing of the Govern
de les Illes Balears for the
creation of a marine reserve
in the waters of the Serra de
Tramuntana. This is largely
an initiative valued by the
professional fishing industry,
which previously had been
raised only in the area of
Sóller.
According to the secretary
general of the Federation,
Antoni Garau, the creation
of a marine reserve off the
Serra is necessary and urgent
due to a ‘serious problem of
fishery resources’. A shortage
of potential catches has,
according Garau, caused the
disappearance of nearly half
of artisanal fishermen who,
years ago, traditionally fished
in this area of the Mallorcan
coastline.
Eco-Tax debate
rumbles on
The Association of Tourist
Villas of the Balearic
met in Puerto Pollensa
recently to rally against the
implementation of the new
tax considering the numerous
owners who rent their villas
illegally. The meeting was
not intended to be a debate
on whether to apply the
new tourist tax or not, it
was more about the system
through which the money
will be raised. The association
considers it an unfair tax
as only the regulated and
legalized establishments will
pay, while the ‘big winners’
would be the owners of illegal
holiday homes who would be
able to offer more attractive
prices. The president of the
association suggested that
the eco-tax be collected in
airports and ports and called
on the Government to find
a more appropriate way to
collect the tax on holiday
villas.
He laments, “For our sector
paying €1.5 per day per
person is a lot, our customers
are very sensitive to price
changes.” The question
of the eco-tax has proved
controversial since it hit the
local headlines over the past
few weeks, it has yet to settle.
Subsidence in
Crestatx
It has not been disclosed
to the public until it hit
the press a couple of weeks
ago, but the Govern de les
Illes Balears has been aware
since 2008 that the intense
exploitation of the aquifer in
Crestatx is causing collapses
and subsidence of up to seven
metres deep in the area.
These movements represent
a geological risk for the
urbanization of Crestatx.
In 2006, the Ministry
of the Environment of
the Government of the
Balearic Islands began its
collaboration with the
Geological Survey of Spain
with an investigation of the
phenomenon whose results
leave no doubt.
The dimensions of subsidence
are varied, ranging from
two to 200 square metres.
One collapsed piece of land
is larger in diameter and has
vertical walls of about 15
metres and over 7 metre deep.
It is just a few metres away
from the urbanized area.
The Govern de les Illes Balears
has announced the results
of the study now after the
request of water companies
to infiltrate excess water from
Ufanes, a project that the
department of Environment
is not willing to authorize.

relatives visit graves to honour their loved ones.
All Saints Day
One of the major autumn festivals is this weekend’s All Saints
Day, known locally as Tots Sants or Día de Todos Los Santos.
Halloween precedes what is also called the Day of the Dead,
and according to popular tradition, these days are the time of
year when the interrelated world of the living and the dead are
celebrated.
On one hand it is in memory of relatives who have passed away
and families visit the cemetery to honour them. On the other
hand there is also the belief that during these days, the dead
visit the living.
It has caught on and now the festive celebrations include
witches, spirits, ghosts, ghouls and other terrifying beings.
The cuisine of All Saints, which comes from ancient funerary
offerings, is rich and varied with food of the land and seasonal
produce. Delicacies typical of this festival are the chestnuts and
sweet potatoes that accompanied muscat, eat under the chestnut
family and popular. Of course in Mallorca bunyols are the treat
of choice, see page 6 for a recipe.

Put some cold water in a
desert bowl for you to wet
your hands so that the dough
fritters will not stick to your
fingers. After dipping your
fingers in the cold water,
take a walnut-sized amount
of dough. Push your thumb
through to make a hole in the
dough while it is in your hand

Repeat this process until the

golden brown on both sides,

The paper Epifani uses to make the jewellery ranges from boxes
to magazines and newspapers while cartons and cardboard

For the jewellery, the paper is
prepared over days. First
pulped with water, it is
made into a smooth paste and modelled into beads, ready for
threading. Newsprint is spun into threads and woven together.
Paper of different weight and colour are wound into pieces of
different shapes, sizes and textures.
Finally, the paper becomes wood once again,
either multi-laminated or with hundreds of
selected leaves beaten and worked as if it were
wood. Each piece is original and has its own
set of colours that are only discovered during
the carving process. Whatever the process, each piece is pierced,
dyed, finely finished and mounted to create jewellery that is
complete unique, impossible to replicate.

Transtramuntana
TT4500 & TT3000
Cyclists are well into the sporting season that Mallorca offers.
Last weekend the limelight shone on the TransTramuntana
TT4500 race and its little sister, the TT3000. Record-breaking
participation registered no less than 450 athletes, almost
double than the first edition.
In the second Transtramuntana, the cyclists left from the
Hoposa Uyal Hotel startline in Puerto Pollensa, before
crossing the Serra de Tramuntana, covering 235km and 12
mountain passes. In the TT3000, which has its pivot point in
Valldemossa, participants clocked up an impressive 170km.
But an unexpected factor clouded the race, as the Guardia
Civil slowed down the front group of participants of the
TT4500, considerably lowering the pace. At some points, for
example down from the Puig Major the speed could not exceed
30kph and forced riders to stop several times.
The situation caused a flurry of complaints among
participants, who were otherwise delighted with the
organization and provisioning, as well as the spectacular route.
It was just the intervention of the authorities that caused
controversy.

Handbike Tour
Last weekend saw the second issue of the Mallorca Handbike
Tour. Starting from the Hotel Viva Blue in Muro the athletes
raced three different races, ranging from a time trial between
Muro and Puerto Pollensa on Day 1, a flat 66km race in Muro
and surrounding towns on Day 2 and the mountainous 69km
race to Formentor on Day 3.
The winner of each stage was Rafal Wilk from Poland, a
former speedway rider Wilk moved to Paralympic handcycling
after a life-changing accident.
The Mallorca Handbike Tour is in its second year and garnered
sponsorship from the pharmaceutical company, Labo’Life, for
the second year in a row. The event proved a success and that
Mallorca can play host to all kinds of sporting events.

The 261 Women’s Marathon will be held in Palma in April
next year and as part of its holistic approach, organizers are
providing training sessions. Coming to Cala San Vicente on
Saturday 31st are four coaches who will be taking a group of
runners of all levels through a walking, running and walk/run
session followed by a core workout on the beach.

That’s Football!
In the last edition of Talk of the North lavish praise was
heaped on Real Mallorca’s German goalkeeper Timon
Wellenreuther. This was akin to commentator’s curse, the kind
you see regularly on TV when a player’s ability is extolled
by the commentator and clamorous mistakes ensue. In the
case of goalkeepers, such mistakes very often lead to
goals being conceded. After starring for the German
under-21 team 19-year-old Wellenreuther returned
to the Mallorca team for the visit to Mirandes
brim full of confidence. In a nightmare first half
the home side went into a two-goal lead because
of two horrendous bloopers by the keeper. The
new look Mallorca team are made of sterner stuff
these days. Head coach Chapi Ferrer made two bold
substitutions at half time and the team led by the
rejuvenated captain Javi Ros fought back to earn a well
deserved point.
Chapi is turning the defence into a settled and well-drilled
unit (apart from the aforementioned individual errors) which
is a huge improvement on last season.
Chapi is still not winning the fans over completely and baffled
the pundits yet again when he left star striker Roland Bianchi
on the substitute’s bench in the home game against Almeria in
favour of the woefully out of form Como. The victory in that
game saw Mallorca move up to 17th in the second division of
Spanish football, which doesn’t sound too impressive. However
they are only four points off a playoff place and seven from an
automatic promotion place. The current form is encouraging
with a four game unbeaten run featuring two wins and two
draws. A continuation of this run will see the club rapidly
climbing the league.
The next encounter is away at Leganes on the 1st November
and a home game to Zaragoza on Saturday the 7th November
with an 8.15 pm kick off.
Mirandes 2-2 Real Mallorca
A brilliant second half saw Mallorca overturn a
2-0 deficit with goals from Sissoko (again) and
the inspirational skipper Javi Ros. Much credit
goes to Chapi who threw on attackers Pereira and
Brandon Thomas at the interval and they both
played important parts in the comeback
Real Mallorca 1-0 Almeria
This was a nervy showing but the islanders continued their
recent run of form. Inexplicably Chapi left Bianchi out of the
starting line up. There was little to cheer the home crowd until
the introduction of Brandon Thomas on the hour mark. From
Cal D´Or, with a Spanish father and Welsh mother, Thomas
has had a spell on the sidelines due to injury but is now
fighting fit and by his performances demanding a starting slot.
He is not in the same league as wonder kid Marco Asensio
who was sold to Real Madrid in the summer but he is coming
on leaps and bounds. Bigger clubs are monitoring his progress
and he headed the winning goal with eight minutes left on the
clock.
