San Antonio Parrot Head Club 2 September 2013 Notes from President “Cooler” Dave Spenny SAPHC, Gosh this Summer has flown by. It’s been a great one. Thanks to all of you for your support for our annual school supplies drive for Southwest Elementary. Your generosity enabled the school to have over 100 back packs for their “at risk” children. The Aug 24th house concert with Jimi Pappas and John Patti was one the best yet. We were so lucky to have these two talented artist play for us. A big thanks to David and Glenda Keck for hosting this great time. of We have our 14th Anniversary Party coming up on 21 Sept. This is our biggest fund raiser of the year, so be thinking of that special item you’d like to donate to our silent auction. Please bring any items you plan on donating to our 19 Sept Happy Hour so we can catalog the items for our auction. Also we’ll need some volunteer assistance to decorate and run the sign in table/sell raffle tickets for the party. Keep watching emails for volunteer opportunities. Don’t forget that registration for Meeting of the Minds (MOTM) in Key West closes the end of Sept or 3,500 registered. With the lineup this year we may reach the 3,500 early. Currently we have 50+ pholks from SAPHC attending this year. This event will be a good one. Hopefully, y’all have noticed we’ve changed our venue for Happy Hours. We are now at the Mine Shaft Saloon, right behind the Magic Time Machine. We are working with them on some great Happy Hour specials, so come on out and join us for a phun time! Our 19 Sept Happy Hour has a “Pirate” theme since that day is national “Talk Like a Pirate” day! We’ll have some great charity/volunteer opportunities coming up this next quarter. We’ve scheduled a Food Bank Work Day for 12 Oct from 1-4PM. Highway Cleanup will probably be in November Also in December we will be supporting the Elf Louise Christmas project. We probably start looking for volunteers for this worthwhile cause in October. Our Santa delivery date is not scheduled yet, but the gift wrap evening is scheduled for 5 December. Nothing beats “Partying with a Purpose”. “We’re all here, because we’re not all there” “Cooler” Dave Spenny President, SAPHC SAPHC Photographer—Lori Parker If you enjoy the new format of the newsletter with all the photographs, please track down Lori at the next SAPHC function and thank her, hug her, kiss her and that’s probably enough, well maybe another hug or two. Lori has been instrumental in providing the Hemisphere Flyer with Phinomenal Pictures in the past and hopefully in the phuture. We will hear about Lori’s trip to Alaska to see Chad in the October Hemisphere Flyer!! 3 San Antonio Parrot Head Club September 2013 August Happy Hour It’s official!!! I’m a Parrot Head. We have been long-time fans of Jimmy Buffet and Key West is one of our favorite destinations! Bob Friese invited us to join him at Riley’s last summer; we did and we had a “Blast”! I even won the Hula Hoop Contest. J It was just a couple of weeks after that when we joined the club. Bob was born in California and is a true “Surfer”. He got drafted by the Army, went to Viet Nam and Desert Storm, retired, then went to work for a government contractor and traveled to Saudi for a year. He then went back to work for the government , was sent to Afghanistan two times; I said Enough, it was just too dangerous so he gave in and retired, this time for good! Now he enjoys SAPHC, Wildlife Committee at the San Antonio Stock Show& Rodeo and playing golf . . . well earned! I grew up in San Antonio and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. I attended University of Incarnate Word, studying business administration. I worked for City Public Service for a little over 14 years, then worked for an OB-Gyn doctor for about 3 years. I have now been an Administrator for WellMed for the last 5 years; starting at our Bulverde Clinic then recently relocated to our Floresville Clinic; much closer to our home in La Vernia. Together we have three children; one son and two daughters and six grandchildren, four boys and two girls. We are very proud of all of them. Some are in La Vernia, then others in Colorado and Florida. We have truly loved becoming members of the SAPHC and meeting you all. We look forward to more fun, volunteering, and partying with a purpose! Thank you all for being so friendly and kind and welcoming! Our Newest Parrotheads Our Newest Parrotheads Welcome to the Club! Kathy Tauber Membership Director Mike Martin Stephanie Hawley Laura & Dan Boyd 13 San Antonio Parrot Head Club September 2013 SAPHC Out and About by Diane Elliott On Friday, August 2nd, I was lucky enough to travel to Bossier City, LA, to visit the new Margaritaville Casino and attend a Jerry Jeff Walker concert. My travel mates were Pete and Linda Shaw and Doc and Susan Blanchard. Pete and Linda were nice enough to carry me up there and Doc and Susan brought me back home. Our trip started out Friday morning with plans of having lunch in Waco at George’s Bar (Pat Green’s old haunt) for some great catfish and ice cold beer. Note of warning when going to the original George’s – watch out for the one-way street headed that way. People look at you funny when you try it any other way! Next stop, Bossier City. After getting checked in and starting happy hour there, we moved on to Margaritaville for dinner. Most of us tried a little gambling, but I, being the one who loves to feed the slots, stuck around a little longer. When I got back to the hotel, the other four were continuing the party in the Shaw’s room. We finally shut it down with talk of Bloody Mary’s and breakfast before our cruise down the river that Pete had arranged. Everyone was a little slow getting up Saturday morning, so it was a quick breakfast from the snack bar and a Bloody Mary for the brave. We did a relaxing cruise on the Red River with Captain Sandy, who put the steering duties in Linda’s capable hands. After the cruise, we did a little sightseeing that included checking out the DuPont Fish Market in Shreveport. Two notes of warning about the fish market: You will walk out with no desire to ever eat fish again and, when leaving the fish market, watch out for the one-way street headed out. Those people also give you strange looks (and maybe a few hand gestures) when you try it any other way! We went back to the hotel and out to lunch at a good Irish Pub on the Boardwalk. After lunch, there was some down time and then it was back to Margaritaville for an introduction to the “Livin’ it Up” Margaritas (yummy) and on to the concert. Jerry Jeff put on a great show for two hours. The venue seats less than 1000 people so it was full. He seemed to be enjoying himself along with the rest of us. I hadn’t seen him in concert in probably 20 years and his voice is as good as it ever was, in my opinion. He played so many of his great songs and added a few new ones. After the concert, we decided to check out the Horseshoe Casino where we saw literally a million dollars, in hundred dollar bills, on a huge wall. The walk was a little longer than we thought and we didn’t stay long (not nearly as nice as Jimmy’s place) and caught a shuttle back to our hotel for a few more drinks, music and telling stories. Sunday morning came way too early, so it was back to San Antonio. I say it was a successful road trip and am grateful that the Shaws and Blanchards let me tag along. I think the next time Jerry Jeff is at Gruene, or anywhere close by, we really need to do another road trip. 14 San Antonio Parrot Head Club September 2013 Pete’s Parrot Poop September's Poop is all about "Phoenicopteris ruber plasticus - an avian species best known as "The Pink Plastic Flamingo." In 1957, a young Worcester Art Museum art school graduate was offered a job designing three-dimensional animals for Union Products, Inc. He sculpted over 750 different items. The first was a girl with a watering can, then a boy with a dog, then a duck. He bought a duck and named it Charlie so he could watch the duck for his sculpturing. Just after carving the duck, he was asked to sculpt a flamingo. That year, in 1957, Don Featherstone sculptured the first three-dimensional pink plastic flamingo, thereby making affordable bad taste accessible to the American public. Not wanting to buy a flamingo to study, he based his creation on photographs of flamingos from National Geographic. It was an instant hit across the country. In 1987, Don Featherstone inscribed his signature in the original plastic mould to help distinguish the original birds from the "knockoffs." The signature of Don Featherstone, on the bottom side under the feathers, stayed with the Pink Flamingo until 2001, when Union Products removed the famous authenticating signature. A boycott of loyal Featherstone Bird Watchers quickly persuaded Union Product officials to restore the signature. The Featherstone Pink Plastic Flamingo was removed from the endangered species list immediately!!! On 1 November 2006, Union Products closed and the Pink Flamingo stopped being produced. Many cheap overseas knockoffs failed to live up to Featherstone Flamingo quality -- Made in the USA. Shortly after the UP closing, a small New York company bought the molds and sub-contracted production to a Fitchburg, Massachusetts, company, Cado Products. Ironically, Donald Featherstone now lives in Fitchburg. In 2010, Cado Products (cadocompany.com) purchased the copyrights and plastic molds for the Featherstone Pink Plastic Flamingo. They continue to manufacture the classic birds today, sold in pairs only, with Don Featherstone's signature. 15 San Antonio Parrot Head Club September 2013 Not Jeff Cohen’s Apple Pie Moonshine For those of us who attended Pirates’ Ball in Austin you should remember the Jeff Cohen’s Moonshine being passed around. We attempted to obtain the recipe but apparently it is a Cohen Family Recipe and unavailable for the public masses. After careful analysis of the contents it was determined that the recipe below is relatively close to the secret family sauce. So I present to you the Not Jeff Cohen’s Apple Pie Moonshine recipe: 1/2 gallon of apple juice 1/2 gallon of apple cider 3/4 cup white sugar 1 1/4 cups of brown sugar 4 cinnamon sticks 1/2 liter of 190 Proof Grain Alcohol, Everclear or equivalent. To get started, you need a large boiling pot. Add into this pot the apple juice, apple cider, the white and brown sugar, and the whole fresh cinnamon sticks. Bring these contents to a boil, then remove the pot from the stove and let it cool down to room temperature. Once at room temperature, gradually stir in the 190 proof grain alcohol. What you don’t consume in one sitting, you can bottle for later use. Store it in sterile Mason jars, place one cinnamon stick in each jar, and then store them in a cool dark dry place. After a couple of weeks your Apple Pie Moonshine will taste even better. This batch will make about 4 1/2 quarts. 1 gallon of apple juice 1 gallon of apple cider 1 1/2 cups of white sugar 2 1/2 cups brown sugar 8 cinnamon sticks 1 liter of 190 Proof Grain Alcohol, Everclear or equivalent Gotta love a Google Search huh?? 16 San Antonio Parrot Head Club September 2013 SAPHC History Lesson San Antonio Parrot Head Club Celebrates 14th Anniversary! It is hard to believe that the San Antonio Parrot Head Club is celebrating fourteen years as a sanctioned club as part of the Parrot Heads in Paradise, Inc. What is really amazing to me is that we have so many new members, but with a few that have been there since the beginning - so many things are new all over again! Most of you don’t pay attention to your member number, though it is requested on almost every form that you sign up on! It is also displayed on your badge. The club is now up to the number 1064. What that means is that over the past fourteen years, at least 1064+ people have joined the club! If you see someone with a badge number from 1 to 250 – those people have been in the club 10 years! But we welcome all of our new members and hope you find that we offer a place that is fun and friendly where you can “Party with a Purpose”! Here is an excerpt of an article written in 2008 for the “Tropical Dreams” website to be the featured “club of the month” for July 2008 (quite an honor back then), so I offer this a part of the club history. San Antonio Parrot Head Club “We have Caribbean Souls We Can Barely Control and Some Texas Here in Our Hearts” San Antonio, Texas, is well known for The Alamo and the famous River Walk, but in 1998 when Garrett Van Delden (club founder), and several of his family and friends returned from a Jimmy Buffett concert in Las Vegas, energized and looked for a local parrot head club – but there was none in San Antonio. They had been Jimmy Buffett fans for a long time and realized that they wanted to join the Parrot Heads in Paradise (PHIP) community and “Party with a Purpose”. Garrett gathered a small group of dedicated people, his wife Pam Van Delden, brother Tim Van Delden, Mike and Holly King, and Judy Coteff to form the first Board of Directors for the San Antonio Parrot Head Club (SAPHC) in March 1999. It started with a small core group of people and with a lot of hard work and dedication; they grew the membership to over 40 by the end of 1999. In 2009 the SAPHC was awarded the coveted PHIP “Golden Coconut Award for Excellence in Community Service”. Clubs can only compete for and win this award once, and after winning it they are considered “golden” forever! Many that are new to the club don’t know what this award means! In 1996, Margaritaville and Parrot Heads In Paradise, Inc. decided to create an award to be given to a deserving Parrot Head Club, emblematic and in recognition of the outstanding Charitable and Environmental efforts of ALL Parrot Head Clubs. Today, competition for the coveted award is waged through a "blind essay" submitted to an illustrious panel of judges composed of previous Golden Coconut Award recipients. Bestowed upon the winning chapter, the Golden Coconut is a one of a kind trophy designed, hand-crafted and presented by our friends at Margaritaville Key West during the annual Meeting of the Minds. Our next big fund raiser is our Anniversary Party on Set 21st. We will have big red barrels outside the Harmony Hills Cabana Club for non-perishable food donations. The auction and raffle proceeds will go to the Alzheimer’s Association and the San Antonio Food Bank. It will be a good time for great causes and we appreciate your participation and donations. So please come and join us as we celebrate our 14th Anniversary and “Party with a Purpose”! 17 San Antonio Parrot Head Club September 2013 Recipe of the Month WORM DIRT CAKE By Karen Prevou Stolen from COOKS.COM This popular "novelty" cake is a hit at Parrot Head parties, especially around Halloween. You'll receive many appreciative compliments from your guests such as "Ewww, that's gross, but give me some more!!” And “Hey, this goes well with Rum.” It really resembles a pudding more than it does a conventional cake. If you serve it as an ever yday family dessert, rather than as a fun decorative element, it's possible that your family may not understand it! 1 to 1 1/4 lb. pkg. Oreo cookies 1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese 1/2 cup butter, softened 1 cup powdered sugar 3 cups milk 1 (12 oz.) tub Cool Whip (can use chocolate) 2 (3 1/2 oz.) pkg. instant vanilla or chocolate pudding 1/2 tsp. vanilla 4 gummy worms and/or other critters Crush Oreos. Put 1/3 of the crushed Oreos into a new, clean flower pot. Set aside. Mix butter, cream cheese and sugar and vanilla together. Set aside. Combine milk and pudding mix. Fold Cool Whip into the pudding. Fold together pudding mixture and butter -cream cheese mixture. Layer this mixture (about 1/3 of it) onto the crumbled cookies in the pot. Next, add another layer of the pudding mixture, then another layer of cookie crumbs, continuing until all ingredients are used. As you're layering the ingredients, decoratively place several gummy worms and critters in the "soil" so they will be seen emerging. If you have a toy (clean) garden trowel, a plastic daisy, or some edible f lo w er s , t h es e c a n a ls o b e us e d c r ea t i v el y t o em be l l is h th e presentation. Chill in refrigerator for 3 to 4 hours before serving. 18 San Antonio Parrot Head Club September 2013 Backpack Update!!! Members of the San Antonio Parrot Head Club, THANK YOU! Your generosity and support of Southwest Elementary School is very much appreciated. The supplies that you all have donated have me in awe. In my years of being a public educator, I can easily say that I have never seen such an outpouring of support and kindness to support at-risk students. With your outpouring of gifts, I feel that I can safely say that every child who is in need of supplies for the beginning of the year will have them. Thank you so much for supporting and remembering Southwest Elementary. Sincerely, Pamela Dahlquist, Principal Southwest Elementary Troy, Realtors Hello Parrot Heads!
