extraction process
extraction is a method of removing essential oil from a flower, seed or bark.
steam distillation is a process by which plant material is placed in a still and heated as water
runs through it. as it heats, the water evaporates and the oils from the plant rise and separate
from the water. the remaining water is called the hydrosol and the oil is the essential oil –
the essence of the plant. it is considered living matter.

been noted that the roses on a given bush smell different at different
times during the day, and that the intensity of the scent increases
before a storm. therefore, the blossoms are gathered before they
open, just before sunrise. if they were to be gathered later in the day
the perfume would be stronger, though not as delicately sweet. rose
is an aphrodisiac which is also used to drive away melancholy and
lift the heart.

guaiacum officinale
guaiac wood oil is steam distilled from the wood and
sawdust of the south american palo santo tree. small
pieces of this wood have been used for centuries as
incense in spiritual rituals. it has been said that this oil can
be used as a lymphatic decongestant, as well as having
anti-inflammatory properties.

jasminum tortuosum willd
the name jasmine most likely derives from the persian language,
and means "heavenly felicity." jasmine flowers are harvested at
night due to the fact that the odor of the jasmine flower is much
more powerful after dark.

black pepper is one of the spicy top notes which, like gold was used in ancient
times as a medium of exchange and an article of tribute. it still remains one of the
most important spices for perfumery. the peppercorns are dried, crushed and
steam-distilled to produce an almost transparent oil which thickens with age. it
smells much like the spice, though also has a dry, fresh, woody warm aroma.
black pepper is said to stimulate the mind and to warm an indifferent heart.

pink grapefruit is a relatively new essential oil for use in perfumery due to the fact
that grapefruit has only been around since the eighteenth century when this citrus
hybrid between sweet orange and pomelo was first bred in jamaica. grapefruit oil
is extracted from the fresh peel using a cold-press process.

endangered plant species protection
endangered plant species are those plant species whose ability to
survive and reproduce has been jeopardized by human activities,
such that the size of the population is so low that the species is at
risk of extinction. the world conservation union lists 34,000 plants
as threatened with extinction. although hard to calculate, about
400 plant species appear to have gone extinct from human
activities. plants become endangered predominantly through
habitat loss and degradation and competition with exotic species.
