Tues. 2nd: DUBLIN ARRIVAL & PHOENIX PARK After landing at Dublin Airport, complete customs and immigration formalities. Your CIE Tours driver/guide will welcome you to Ireland and escort you and your luggage to the coach. Enjoy breakfast before driving a short distance to visit Phoenix Park. Phoenix Park is a delightful rustic park almost in the city center, which is the largest walled park in Europe. After your visit, take an orientation drive around Dublin city center. See the main thoroughfares of O’Connell Street and Nassau Street, the shopping streets and some lovely public parks. Then drive to your hotel and check in. Once you settle into your room, you may like to rest or explore some of the city on your own before dinner. In the evening join your fellow travelers for dinner in the hotel restaurant. Wed. 3rd: ST. PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL & TRINITY COLLEGE This morning celebrate Mass before stopping to tour St. Patrick's Cathedral, which is almost as old as the city itself. The cathedral is famous for its connections with the brilliantly eccentric Dean Jonathan Swift. In Trinity College view the 8th century Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript of the gospels. Enjoy a pub lunch with your group and then the balance of the day is free for independent activities, sightseeing, shopping, dining, pubs and much more. Thurs. 4th: GLENDALOUGH & CASTLEDERMOT ABBEY Depart Dublin to see the delightful scenery of the Wicklow Mountains. Stop in Glendalough Visitor Centre to learn about St. Kevin’s 6th century monastery and walk through the site with its round tower, church ruins and Celtic crosses. Continue to Baltinglass to visit Baltinglass Abbey, which the oldest part dates back to the 12th century. Then motor a short distance to visit the Franciscan Abbey in Castledermot, which dates back to the 9th century. After your visit, drive south to your hotel in Waterford and check in for dinner and your overnight stay. Fri. 5th: ROCK OF CASHEL & KILLARNEY Leaving Waterford drive west for a stop at the Rock of Cashel for a guided tour of these majestic church ruins which are clustered high on a limestone outcrop overlooking the surrounding countryside. Of particular note are the highly decorated Cormac's Chapel which was built during the 12th century, the large cruciform cathedral from the 13th century and a round tower. After your visit travel southwest through County Cork and into the rugged countryside of County Kerry. Continue to the town of Killarney which is charmingly located with a backdrop of mountains and lakes. Upon arrival celebrate Mass with your group and then check into your hotel. Tonight, join your group for dinner at the hotel restaurant. Sat. 6th: DINGLE PENINSULA TOUR & GALLARUS ORATORY From Killarney drive via Killorglin and out along the Dingle Peninsula. Stop in the town of Dingle before driving to the very tip of the peninsula to see the primitive stone “beehive” huts of the early monks and the Gallarus Oratory, built in the 6th century of unmortared stone and watertight after 14 centuries. Next travel to Ballyferriter to visit Kilmalkedar Church, which is said to be fashioned after Cormac’s Chapel. See the Nave, the Chancel Arch, the Alphabet Stone and even the stone cross before returning to Killarney. Spend the balance of the day at leisure for individual sightseeing, shopping, dining and more. Sun. 7th: CLIFFS OF MOHER & GALWAY Today travel north through the village of Listowel to Tarbert. Take a 20-minute ferry ride across the River Shannon estuary and drive to Liscannor to visit St. Brigid’s Well. The well as it exists today, is found within a stone well house where pilgrims continue to leave a great variety of votive offerings. Next visit the Cliffs of Moher, which rise 700 feet above the sea and extend five miles along the coast. Pass through the Burren Country, an area of rocky limestone hills where a number of unique flowers thrive. Drive around Galway Bay before arriving at your hotel in Galway. Enjoy the balance of the afternoon at leisure to relax or do some exploring on your own before joining your group for dinner. Mon. 8th: BALLINTUBBER ABBEY, KNOCK & CARROWMORE This morning drive towards Ballintubber Abbey - known as "the Abbey that refused to die" - has the unique status of being Ireland's only royal Abbey, which has been in continuous use for more than 780 years. Continue your drive east to the pilgrimage town of Knock to visit Knock Shrine, one of the world’s leading shrines where the Virgin Mary appeared to 15 people on August 21, 1879. See the shrine and modern basilica before celebrating Mass. Next continue on to visit Carrowmore, the largest cemetery of megalithic tombs in Ireland, and the second largest in Europe. Then travel north to your hotel and check in. After you settle into your room you may like to rest or explore some of the city before dining with your group. Tues 9th: DERRY WALKING TOUR, GIANT'S CAUSEWAY & BELFAST After breakfast travel to Derry and embark on a walking tour to see the principal sights. Pass the 17th century St. Columb's Cathedral, the Tower Museum with local history displays and the Guildhall where the history of Derry is depicted in stained-glass windows. Then continue your drive through Limavady and Coleraine to visit the Giant's Causeway. This impressive area of hexagonal columns was formed more than 60 million years ago by the slow and even cooling and contraction of molten lava. Then travel through the “Nine Glens of Antrim” for wonderful views of mountains, valleys and coastline. Drive to Belfast and check into your hotel for dinner and overnight stay. Wed. 10th: DOWNPATRICK & STRUELL WELLS Leaving Belfast, drive south through Newry and Dundalk with views of the Mountains of Mourne in the background. Stop in Downpatrick to see St. Patrick’s reputed burial place, marked by a granite boulder at Down Cathedral. Next travel east to visit Saul Church, which was built in 1932, to commemorate Saint Patrick's first church in Ireland. Then motor a short distance to see four holy wells of Struell that predate Saint Patrick. Many accounts, whether factual or not, say that Saint Patrick when he arrived to the Struell wells blessed them. Today the wells are often a place of pilgrimage for those who seek a cure or to do penance. After your visit, journey south to Dublin and check into your hotel. After you settle into your room enjoy the balance of the day for individual pursuits and dining. Thurs. 11th: RETURN TO THE UNITED STATES All too soon, your vacation in Ireland has come to the end. Transfer to Dublin Airport in plenty of time to check in for your flight, clear security and claim your VAT refund. You may do some last minute shopping at the duty free stores before boarding your aircraft and flying west across the Atlantic Ocean back to the United States.
