I have such a large family that I do not want to miss out on anything, and I love sharing my pictures and memories with others. Scrapbooking keeps my memories fresh and alive; I will treasure these pages for years to come. It isn’t always easy to find just the right paper and accessories, so I like to paint my own pages, using elements and colors from my photos. Because the new FolkArt® Papier™ Paints were formulated especially for painting on paper, they are perfect for scrapbooks. These luscious paints will not warp the paper, and they are flexible when dry, so they will not crack when papers bend with frequent handling. You can use a brush with Papier™ Flow Medium for familiar painting techniques, but Papier™ Paints can also be squeezed from the bottle tip and used like a pen for dimensional effects. The Papier™ line includes Glass Finish to make parts of your designs look as if they are made from glass. The possibilities are endless! If you have boxes of photos and special keepsakes, I hope this book will inspire you to bring them out and create scrapbooks full of the happiest memories of your life. Most importantly, don’t forget to share these “books of memories.” You, too, can be someone’s inspiration! About the Artist ONE-Stroke Certification For information on Donna’s three-day seminar, where you can learn her painting techniques as well as how to start a business in decorative painting and tips for being a good teacher, how to demo in stores, and how to get your painting published, contact her one of these ways: DONNA DEWBERRY Donna Dewberry, a native Floridian, has been involved with arts and crafts all of her married life - over 30 years. Maribel has been with me for years and has been such a blessing to me. Terri and Althea are more recent additions to my design staff but, have come through for me more times than I can count. Each of them gives her own creative flair to our staff and we are so blessed to have them. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. I appreciate you so much! 2 • By e-mail: [email protected] Book #9814: Book #9814 9/9/10 2:05 PM Page 3 ONE Stroke™ Supplies ◆ FOLKART ® ◆ KEEPSAKE COLORS PAPIER™ ™ GEL These paints were developed for use on paper. They are acid free plus they don’t cause the paper to warp - perfect for scrapbook enthusiasts. They are thick and creamy, which is exactly what One Stroke painters want. Papier can be used with a paint brush or straight from the bottle by squeezing, using the tip of the bottle like a pen. They are available in a wide variety of colors, including metallics and glitters. To use these as dimensional paints just squeeze the bottle gently. The color should flow out of the bottle easily with little pressure. If it does not flow out easily, insert a pin in the tip to clear it. You can outline objects, make swirls or fill in any area by just moving the tip around the area. The glitter colors are best used straight from the bottle to create an elaborate affect or to add glitz and glitter to your designs. IMPORTANT: Make sure to wipe off the tip of the bottle before replacing the cap. If paint is left on the tip it will build up in the cap and cause the tip of the bottle to bend which will result in poor outlines. These acid-free, gel-formula paints were developed with scrapbookers in mind. The paints can be used for photo tinting on professionally-printed matte finish photos as well as photos printed on a laser or ink jet printer on matte finish photo paper. The paints can also be brushed on printed papers or vellum to create transparent washes. They can also be used instead of ink on foam ink pads with rubber stamps. Keepsake Colors Gel dries quickly and is available in a wide range of colors, including sparkles. Before ◆ FOLKART PAPIER™ FLOW MEDIUM 1769 ® After If you use the Papier™ Paints with a brush, use Flow Medium as well as the paint. This medium facilitates your painting just as a blending medium does with other types of acrylic paint, but Flow Medium is made especially for use with these paints and for use on paper. ◆ ONE STROKE ™ BRUSHES FOR PAPER These brushes are especially designed for use with the Papier ™ Paint. They have stiffer bristles for brushing out paint on paper. The following brushes are available and are all used in this book: • Papier™ Basic Set 1854 includes: Flats sizes #8, #16; Script Liner size #2 • Papier™ Scruffy Brush 1855, size 1/2" Also used in this book is the FolkArt® ONE Stroke™ Scruffy Brush 1174, size 1/4". 3 Book #9814: Book #9814 9/9/10 2:05 PM Page 4 S UPPLIES ◆ SURFACES FOR PAINTING ◆ MISCELLANEOUS SUPPLIES All of the surfaces used in this book are paper suitable for scrapbook pages. They come in diameters of 1/8" (73MIC), 1/4" (73MIN), and 1/2" (73DOT). ◆ FOLKART ® PAPIER™ GLASS FINISH Just squeeze out over the top of a painted area that is dry to create an effect of looking through glass. Glass Finish is available in 2 oz. squeeze bottles in three colors: Clear 1777, Sepia 1763, and Antique 1764. The ONE Stroke Technique USING ONE STROKE BRUSHES dampen the bristles in water and dry them with a paper towel before loading. When cleaning flat brushes, you can use the rake in the bottom of the Brush Caddy. Flat ONE Stroke™ brushes are synthetic and don’t have a tendency to break, but be gentle. ONE Stroke™ brushes are essential for the ONE Stroke™ technique. They have been designed especially for this type of stroke work. Here’s a brief explanation on the use and purpose of each brush: Script Liner: The script liner is used when painting curlicues or string ribbons and similar items. It is used with paint that is inky (thinned with water to the consistency of ink). Use this way: Wet the brush. Load paint on your palette. Dip the brush in water three or four times. Roll the wet brush in the paint, twirling the brush to load. Pull out to the side of the palette until well loaded with inky paint. Clean the script liner as you would flats; be gentle, but clean thoroughly. Scruffy: I originally created the scruffy by shaping the bristles of an old, worn out brush into an oval after carefully cutting them to a uniform length of about 1/2". The ONE Stroke™ scruffy brushes you can buy are ready to use. All you have to do is “fluff the scruff ” - remove the brush from the packaging and form the bristles into an oval shape by gently pulling them, then twist the bristles in the palm of your hand until they are a nice oval shape. Now you’re ready to pounce the brush into paint and begin. A fluffed scruffy brush is used to paint mosses, wisteria, lilacs, some hair and fur, faux finishes, and shading textures. This brush is not used with water. To clean, pounce the bristles in the Brush Caddy - don’t rake them; the natural bristles can break. Allow the brush to dry thoroughly before painting with it again. Cleaning and Care of Brushes: Proper cleaning and care makes brushes last longer and perform better. 1. Clean brushes thoroughly with water. Be gentle. 2. Brush bristles across a bar of soap and work it in with your fingers, making certain it is distributed all the way to the ferrule. Rinse with water. 3. Dry bristles with a clean rag or paper towels, shaping them as you dry. Leaving a small amount of moisture in the bristles will not harm them. Lay brushes flat to store. 4. Optional: I like to brush the bristles on a non-perfumed, non-deodorant bar of soap to help them keep their shape. Rinse before painting again. Flat Brushes: flat side chisel edge ONE Stroke™ flat brushes are designed with longer bristles and less thickness in the body of the brush than other flat brushes, so they have a much sharper chisel edge. A sharp chisel edge is essential as most of strokes begin and then end on the chisel edge. These brushes are ready to use from the package. Simply Brush Care Tips: • Don’t allow paint to dry in your brush. • As you paint, occasionally rinse the bristles with water. • Store brushes in a container that keeps brush bristles from bending. 4 Book #9814: Book #9814 9/9/10 2:05 PM Page 5 T HE ONE S TROKE T ECHNIQUE DOUBLE-LOADING ONE STROKE FLAT BRUSHES staples. To keep the pattern sheet intact, trace pattern on tracing paper with a pencil or pen. To transfer, place the item to be painted on your work surface and lay the traced pattern in position on project. Slip transfer paper between pattern and item. Trace pattern with a stylus to transfer it. 1. Wet your brush and gently lay flat on paper towel to remove excess water. 2. Pick up paint by dipping one corner of the brush in one color and the opposite corner of the brush in another color (for double loading). 3. Stroke brush back and forth in a sweeping motion. Repeat step 2 once DOUBLE LOADING BRUSHES or twice until the brush is full of paint two-thirds of the way up the bristles. • When brush is loaded correctly, your strokes should feel as if the bristles glide. If the brush is coarse or splits, you do not have enough paint on the brush. 4. When you need more paint: Once your brush is loaded, all you need to do to paint is to pick up a touch of Dip one side of the chisel edge of paint of either color and start paintdampened brush into one color. ing. You do not need to brush back and forth on your palette anymore. If you continue to do this every time you pick up paint, you will not have enough paint to finish your strokes. USING FLOW MEDIUM Load your brush as normal with the colors. When your brush is fully loaded dip the chisel edge into a puddle of Flow Medium and work into the brush using the same track you used when you loaded the brush. Keep in mind that the Flow Medium will turn the colors transparent if too much is loaded on the brush, so make sure to fully load your brush with the colors before loading the Flow Medium. TRANSFERRING PATTERNS The patterns for the projects for this book are located on the pattern sheets at the center of the book. To remove the pattern sheets, open the center staples, lift out the pattern sheets, and close the Dip other side into second color. Colors should form triangles on the brush and meet in the middle. Stroke brush to blend colors where they meet. If You’re a Left-Handed Painter • Always start where I say to end and end your stroke where I indicate to start. • When you are stroking leaves, turn your practice sheets or worksheets so you stroke the tip of the leaf towards your body. • Experiment by turning the surface at different angles to see what works best for you. 5 Tips for transferring patterns: • Reduce or enlarge the patterns as necessary on a copy machine to accommodate the size of your project. • Use dark transfer paper for light surfaces and white for dark surfaces. • Lightly tape the pattern to the surface to keep it from sliding. • It is not necessary to trace every fine detail. Transfer the main outlines of the pattern. Tracing every detail takes away from the natural look you are trying to attain. USING THE PAINTING WORKSHEETS The worksheets in this book are designed to illustrate techniques and strokes. To practice, place kitchen plastic wrap over the worksheet and paint the motif right over Donna’s painting, following the arrows and instructions. Then just remove and replace the plastic wrap and practice again. Because the design elements on the worksheets may be used in more than one project, colors on the worksheet will sometimes differ from those in the project instructions. In those cases, use the colors given in the project instructions and refer to the worksheet for techniques and procedure. ❑ Book #9814: Book #9814 9/9/10 2:06 PM Page 6 Wedding Joy GATHER THESE SUPPLIES PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS FolkArt Papier Paint: Amethyst Metallic 1752 Baby Pink 1723 Burnt Umber 1728 Fresh Foliage 1737 Sunflower 1732 Thicket 1734 Wicker White 1721 Trace and transfer the pattern. You can also fashion one out of household items if you are in a pinch. Simply place a light underneath a glass table, or use picture frame glass with a small lamp. You can also use a window as long as there is ample light and you can secure both your brass stencil and your paper to it. 1. Using the ruler, draw a light pencil line on the back of the tan card stock. This line will mark the bottom of the letters. 2. Turn the brass stencil so that the letters are backwards and place it on the light box. Turn the light on and place the tan card stock on top of the stencil. Use the stylus to emboss the letters for the name. Note: I find it easier to emboss the name starting on the left and spelling it in reverse order, rather than starting on the right. ® ™ One Stroke™ Brushes for Paper: Flats: #8, #16 Papers: Paper with crackle print, 12" x 12" for background Paper with holly leaves & berries, 12" x 12" Burgundy card stock Tan card stock White card stock or Bristol board Other Supplies: FolkArt® Papier™ Flow Medium 1769 Bradbury Alphabet brass stencil (All Night Media® 5742S) Pop Dots™, 1/2" dia.
