Primary School Announcement
We are pleased to announce that Mrs Joy Plummer will be joining our College as
Head of Primary in September.
Joy and her husband are returning to Australia after six years working in London,
UK. During her time overseas Joy has gained extensive experience in the English
school system and prior to that in several schools in Queensland over twelve
years.
Joy will be bringing a wealth of knowledge, strategies and resources and we look
forward to her joining our team here at Bayside Christian College.
I am also pleased to announce that Mrs Danielle Reeves will be taking over Mrs
Paine's class from Tuesday 11 June, while Mrs Paine returns to the USA to have
her baby. Mrs Donna Martin will be teaching the class for the rest of this week.
I am also hoping to have an announcement about the replacement for Mrs
Whelan by the end of this week.

WEDNESDAY EVENING June 5th - Our first Music Showcase Evening will be held
at 7pm in the Primary Hall. Many of our music students from across all year levels

Year 9 Outdoor Ed camp to the Cathedral Ranges
From the Secondary School...
We had lots of laughs and smiles
and we all helped each other. We
were one with the wilderness as
we climbed rock ledges, daring
ridges and last but not least, saw
num ero us ko o ka bur r a s a nd
lyrebirds. Overall it was a great
camp. - Riley Gibbon.
This camp was pretty mint. We had
so much fun and lots of jokes. The
best part was that we had lots of
smiles and we kept persisting on our
walks. The biggest challenge was
when we felt in a lot of pain and had
to continue to walk. The bags
weighed over 20kg but the view
made it worthwhile. - Jamie Kats
Such a thrill, outstanding views,
drastic heights, strategic stepping,
courageous acts, exciting
destinations and UNFORGETABLE
moments!
Best camp I’ve been on so far!
- Tahnee Richardson
We arrived at Ned’s Gully and were
meant to make it to the Farmyard but
we ended up at Ned’s Saddle. Then in
the morning we headed to Cooks Mill
where we had tea. We started a fire
and cooked marshmallows. The camp
was Great! - Zaccary Allen.
I think that the camp was great, I
enjoyed it and had lots of fun. Also it
helped to “build character” as Mr
Pleiter keeps saying. The best part of
the camp for me was walking along the
ridge of the mountains because it was
all rocky and basically we had to climb
all of the rocks, although it would have
been easier without the 21 kg packs.
- Jake Saville.
The camp at Cathedral Ranges was challenging,
fun, exciting, scary, cold and windy. On the
second day we walked on the Razor Back
Track, which was on the ridge!! It was a thrill;
we were all so happy when we got to the
bottom. I came home with plenty of scratches
and over 25 splinters in my right hand. I had
lots of fun doing lots of things.
Thank you to Mr Pleiter and Mrs Poole for
looking after us on the camp. - Maddie Turner

Thirty four Year 10 students stepped out in style on
the 18th May when they participated in the 2013
Presentation Ball. The young ladies looked beautiful
and the young men very dashing in all their finery. It
was such a privilege to witness their wonderful
dancing and smiles, the reward of many weeks of
practice. At the following week's Year 9/10
Assembly, when asked what they enjoyed about the
Ball, students responded with: 'all the preparations',
'watching our families' proud faces', 'learning to
dance' and 'getting all dressed up'. This truly was a
rite of passage moment in these young people's
lives.
Thank you to Angie Mathews for all her efforts in
organising this wonderful event. Special thanks to
Bruce Billson MP who joined me in being the guests
of honour - and what an honour it was!

VCAL at work throughout the
school!
Every Tuesday morning, our VCAL students participate in Industry
Electives. This is an opportunity for them to work within an area of interest
and develop specific work skills, while sharing their skills with others.
Some of our students assist in the Early Learning Centre and Primary
classes. It is fantastic to see both older and younger students working
together and enjoying their time together in their learning.
Other VCAL students are designing beautiful new outdoor spaces for all
to share, together with Dave Lomulder and Zacc Klan, while others are
working in
the IT department and
sports department.
It is always exciting to experience the sense of community that working
together brings.

In a Spin
On Friday the 31st of May, students from the
Year 9 & 10 Textiles elective found themselves
in a bit of a Spin when the McClelland Spinners
and Weavers Guild came to share their craft
with them.
The ladies brought their Spinning Wheels along
to show students how raw fibres can be spun
into yarn ready for knitting or weaving. After
watching demonstrations, students had an
opportunity to collect samples of raw fleece,
they prepare them for spinning, and then
either use a spindle or sit at a spinning wheel
to have a go at producing a length of yarn
from a piece of fleece.
Many students enjoyed success at the wheel as
they took instruction and learnt from the
expertise of the ladies from the Spinners and
Weavers Guild.
A big thank you to the ladies from the
‘McClelland Spinners and Weavers Guild’!
These dedicated Spinners donated their time
and materials to bring this interesting and
enjoyable incursion to our students.

Year 11 Chemistry
Awesome Prac:
Nylon Rope Trick
It was practical investigation day in Year 11 Chemistry.
Mr Fernandes announced that we would be making Nylon
Rope out of different chemicals as part of our study of
polymers. We started the experiment by adding the two
solutions of diaminohexane and sebacoyl chloride into a
large beaker. We were challenged to use different
concentrations and amounts of the required chemicals
and some of my colleagues ended up creating a
chemical reaction that smoked out the entire room
similar to that of a magic show performance.
Eventually we figured out the right amount and were
amazed to see how at the interface of the two chemical
solutions we could simply pinch the nylon in the beaker
with tweezers and pull a continuous string of nylon rope
out of the solution. It seemed like an endless supply of
nylon coming out of the solution. Sure enough though,
the source of the nylon rope ended and we had about 20
metres worth of nylon wrapped around the glass rod.
Carefully we unwrapped the nylon rope and cleaned the
acid off by washing it in a trough of water. We all cut
off a piece and took it home and enjoyed this great
experience.

Year 9 Soccer Rally Day
On the 22nd May we participated in the Inter-School
Soccer Rally Day. It was my first time as Captain so Jamie
and Franco helped me put people in positions and told
me what to focus on. We played five games in total and
even though we drew one and lost four, we all played our
very best. In the end the other teams were just too good.
The best players for the day were Jamie and Riley.
By Captain Zac Allen
The Year 9 girls won 4 out of 5 games and made it into
the Grand Final, only letting one goal past. It was a great
day overall for both the boys and girls showing great
sportsmanship, courage and teamwork.
Inter School Cross Country
Well done to all of the students who participated in the Inter-School Cross Country. Bayside
came 4th out of 7 schools. We had three students win their races which was a fantastic effort.
Congratulations to our winners Zoe Stewart (14 Girls), Harry Bailey (14 Boys) and Nathan
Bennett (16 / Open Boys) and for the many other competitors who ran. We could win this
event
if
we
have
more
competitors
in
each
age
group.
Mrs Poole and Mr Pleiter did a great job setting up for the event. They helped make this a fun
and enjoyable day of competition. Our Marshals were amazing, helping to run the event and
being incredibly mature and efficient with their very important tasks. Thanks to Chaylee

Thailand Mission Trip Trivia Night!
A big congratulations to all who organised the
Thailand Mission Trip Trivia Night. The reason for
going was to raise money for our students to go to
Thailand, what we got was a great night of fun,
amazing entertainment (thanks to Andrew Wishart)
and fantastic items for the silent auction just to name
a few.
The students did an amazing job on the night in their
various roles and we hope you have an amazing trip;
you all really deserve it.
For anyone who couldn’t make it this year I highly
recommend that you attend next year; it was a great
night out for both adults and children.
