The bowel
‘Death begins in the colon ‘
(Bernard Jenson)
• The main aim of bowel cleansing is to get the person
in front of you back to scratch, then re-build them
using nutritional methods.
• Nutrition plans will be better tolerated by a client
who has cleansed
• Some times you will find that cleansing alone is
actually the only method they needed and their
health begins to improve.
The Bowel
• Our digestive system is our inner skin, and what we
put in determines what happens to our health.
• The bowel is the first and most important organ
when cleansing is considered. All other elimination
channels need to be remembered for cleansing (The
bowel, kidneys, liver, lungs, skin and lymphatic
system) in this order to reach optimal health
Bowel A&P
• Bowel also known as colon and large intestine
• The bowel is the first organ made during
gestation
• The bowel is made up of 5 strong layers of
muscle, Each layer of muscle fibers are arranged
in different directions making it one the strongest
if not the strongest muscle in the body.
• The bowel is on average 5-6 feet in length and is
should be roughly 2.5 cm in width.
• Optimum bowel movements is 3 x per day if 3
regular meals are eaten daily.
Bowel A&P
• The bowel is one of the major absorption sites
to the body.
• The portal system is a connection of veins that
go from the bowel to the liver
Bowel A&P
• Around 80% of our lymphatic tissue is
connected to the bowel.
Picture taken from Merck Manuals looking at bowel cancer
Reflex Points
•There are reflex points in the bowel that are said to correspond to other parts of
the body
•Whole body cleansing will always happen when working on the bowel.
The Journey of a stool
• Around 3 to 4 pints of fluid (chyme) from food , water and the digestive
process enters the cecum in the bowel daily via the ileo-cecal valve.
• ICV • Opposite the cecum is our appendix full of lymphatic tissue that secrets
fluid into the stool. If the bowel is not functioning properly then the waste
can just sit in the cecum due its pouch like structure and get re-absorbed
back into the lymphatic system via the appendix.
• A full cecum can also lead to waste flowing back into the small intestine
due to an ill working ileo-cecal valve, this is called autointoxication.
• The cecum is also a known for a ‘site’ where parasites can sit due its pouch
like structure.
• The pituitary gland and the cecum have a direct relationship so all aspect
of mind, body spirit need to be taken into consideration for bowel
cleanliness.
The Journey of a stool
As the stool makes it journey through the bowel it gets firmer and
should then release from the bowel as faeces within 24 hours.
Stools can get stuck in the sigmoid colon because they have not been
released effectively nor efficiently. This will then cause a ‘pluglike’
effect or ‘a backup’ of stools leading to a waste build up in the whole
bowel.
If the ‘plug’ is left, the bowel will still try to empty so it will start to
increase in width causing a ballooned effect this can then lead to bowel
pockets where old waste can accumulate and
peristalsis
will slow down or become irregular, causing either
constipation, IBS or Diarrhoea.
The Journey of a stool
• If the congestion reaches the transverse colon it
can get too heavy and prolapsed. Along with the
prolapsed the bowel can increase in width from its
usual 2.5 cm and encroach in other organs space.
• Constipation usually occurs due to lack of fluids in
the diet. Drinking water once constipated will
generally not help.
• There are many other contributors to
constipation: medications, operations, irregular
bowel shape, pregnancy, stress, adrenal fatigue,
hypothyroid, low mobility, poor diet to name a
few.
• When the whole bowel is full it can push into
other areas of the body and reduce their function
Signs of poor bowel health:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Constipation
Diarrhoea
IBS
Bloating
Pain
Bleeding upon wipe or strain
Frequent smelly gas
Leaky gut
Naturopathic signs of poor bowel
health:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Black under eyes
White coating on tongue (damp / Candida)
Hard boils on the cheek area on face
Smelly breath
Persistent Fatigue
Lower back ache
Enemas
&
Colonic Irrigation / Colon
Hydrotherapy
Enema History
• Almost every culture has a history of enemas
• Oldest reference can be taken back to 1,500
• It is reported that Louis XIV had over 2,000 enemas during
his reign
• From enemas came from colonic irrigation.
• The queens doctor is known to use colonic irrigation
treatments regularly at present.
• Colonic irrigation was offered in hospitals in the UK until
Laxatives came about. Laxatives are not bowel friendly and
tend to disturb or inhibit absorption of vitamins and
minerals in the small intestine and make the bowel lazy.
Colonic irrigation has the opposite effect.
What does colonic irrigation do?
• Around 30 bowel movements are released per treatment. Even for those
who pass stools regularly.
• Rehabilitates and re-educates muscle tone and function by waking up the
nerves and sensors in the bowel.
• It improves bowel shapes and tries to even out the ballooned and
strictured (pencil thin) sections of the bowel.
• Softens hard stools so they can be released
• Removes impacted stools and stool in pockets
• Hydrates the body via absorption into the blood
• Removes bad bacteria for healthy flora to re-colonise
• Removes / reduces gut pathogens / parasites
• Colonic irrigation Inhibits autointoxication via the Ilium in the small
intestine.
• Increases absorption in the small intestine by removing waste volume
from the bowel allowing the SI to return to normal size.
• Colonic irrigation Improves liver function due to water being absorbed into
the portal system.
• Stimulates and cleanses the lymphatic system
Colonic Irrigation / Colon
Hydrotherapy
•
•
Colonic irrigation can be used long term and will only benefit the bowel and your
health if carried out regularly and correctly.
Ensure the therapist is correctly trained. ARCH. The Association of Registered
Colon Hydrotherapists.
The Treatment
• Colonic irrigation is a therapeutic, safe method of using warm purified water to
cleanse the bowel and remove waste from bowel pockets
• Different water temperatures are used to either bring blood to towards or away
from the bowel, improving blood flow of nutrients to the rest of the body.
• Treatment usually lasts for 45 minutes
• The therapist should stay with the client the whole time and use an closed system.
In my experience through having colonic irrigation on a regular basis all aspects of
health improve
• Contraindications do exist so if a client has any health issues or bowel disease
check with a registered therapists. A handout is given with this presentation.
• Information is given on the ARCH website.

How Many?
•
•
•
•
It works as a soaking process and typically requires 3-6 treatments to properly clean the bowel and
reach the cecum. These treatments should be close together to retain the soaking effect.
Usually between treatment 3 and 6 is when you get old waste being removed
Often near the end of the course of treatments, hard pellets will release which is the old waste
stored in pockets if left in the bowel they are considered a reason for heath implications.
A cecal flush can also be noted in the treatment which shows the whole length of the bowel has
been worked on.
•
Enemas work very well within the colonic irrigation treatment as you can ensure good absorption
through the bowel wall and into the portal system and lymphatic system.
•
Probiotic implants are also great to use to ensure the good bacteria is replaced.
•
Regular treatments of at least 4 per year is recommended . Often more if bowel habits still need to
be worked on.
•
Even people that go daily may have bowel congestion, prolapsed bowel, bowel pockets, It is not
exclusive to irregular bowels. They should carry out regular colonic treatments.
Coffee Enemas
• Great to use when suspected liver function is
compromised.
• They reduce serum toxins via the portal system.
• Palmitic acid is absorbed via the portal vein to the
liver and stimulates the release of bile. This bile
is un-re-absorbable via the gut wall and is simply
excreted via the bowel.
• Palmitic acid also has a direct influence on
stimulating on Glutathoine S Transferease.
The Gospel of Peace of Jesus’ by the
disciple John
• ‘
• "Seek, therefore, a large trailing gourd, having a stalk the
length of a man; take out its inwards and fill it with water
from the river which the sun has warmed. Hang it upon the
branch of a tree, and kneel upon the ground before the
angel of water, and suffer the end of the stalk of the trailing
gourd to enter your hinder parts, that the water may flow
through all your bowels......................................Then let the
water run out from your body, that it may carry away from
within it all the unclean and evil-smelling things of Satan.
And you shall see with your eyes and smell with your nose
all the abominations, and uncleanness's which defiled the
temple of your body
Natural Products
Prebiotics & Probiotics
• Good gut bacteria is a must for a healthy clean colon
• F.O.S Fructo-oligo sacarhides (non-digestible food ingredient that benefits
the bacterial host in the bowel) Do not use if suspected Candidia present
as can rally acerbate issue.
• Found in bananas, chicory, globe and Jerusalem artichokes, onion, leeks,
garlic.
• Probiotics are such a heavily researched area.
• Should contain at least: Lactobacillius Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium. A
strain nearly always present in the gut from birth. From there other
bacteria will grow.
Probiotic Foods
• Kefier grain / drink– anaerobic lactobacilli which produces lactic acid in
the bowel. Which enhances bowel function and peristalsis thus speeding
up removal of waste.
• Probiotic Yogurts & Yakult should not be used instead of capsules. Our
stomach HCL is there to kill bacteria that enters the gut so most of the
bacteria in these products do not enter the GIT.
• When using capsules – ensure they are enteric coated to bypass stomach
acid
Bentonite clay
•
•
•
Comes from volcanic ash
Is an ideal intestinal cleanser.
It is known for its high absorptive properties. It can absorb 40 times its volume in
solids.
•
•
Opposites attract. Bentonite Clay is negatively charged and most pathogens / toxins are
positively charged such as viruses, heavy metals, drugs and other toxins.
Can be used as an enema.
•
Do not use metal spoons. Use plastic or wooden.
•
Clay should be used for long periods of time. Three weeks maximum if wishing to use
daily.
Warning:
• Medications and supplements
• Bentonite clay has been reported to breakdown scar tissue .Do not use this for those
who have had GIT surgery within the last year at least.
Psyllium Husk
• A seed that comes from the plantago plant. Is often refined into a husk a
powder.
• It is used to attract waste into it and encourage removal of stool from the
bowel
• It is great for improving bowel health as it will add bulk to a loose stool
and regulate and shift a constipated bowel.
• The husk and capsules are good for regulating the bowel
• The powder is good when mixed with the clay
• Do not use in enemas
Spirulina
• Specifically for bowel health It is known as a ‘parallel functional food ‘that
supports gut bacteria flora growth and function, it encourages healthy
removal of waste via the bowel and alkalizes the body.
• NB: Do not recommend Spirulina If suspected yeasts conditions are
presents in the body as it can exacerbate. Chlorella would be the next
best option.
Herbs
• Senna –is not bowel friendly, you can find other herbs that assist
the bowel without being so harsh on the gut wall such as:
• Triphala is an Indian herb blended from 3 fruits. It is known for its
potent cleansing effects on the digestive system.
• Coton – This is a blend of herbs taken from Dr Christopher’s recipe.
Herbal ingredients are: Cascara Sagrada Bark, Barberry Bark,
Cayenne Pepper, Ginger Root, Lobelia Herb, Red Raspberry Leaves,
Turkey Rhubarb Root, Fennel Seeds & Goldenseal Root.. These help
to cleanse the small and large intestine and also tone the muscles in
the bowel along with working on the liver and blood.
• These herbs can be incorporated into a bowel cleanse where the
use of colonics are also recommended.
• They can rally assist the treatment
Foods
Foods to avoid
•
•
•
•
•
•
The obvious empty foods:
White refined foods
Fried foods
Sugar
Grains can cause mucous and inflammation especially gluten.
Dairy has the same effect as gluten at the tight junction in the small
intestine so should be avoided when cleansing or looking to improve
bowel health.
• Stimulants
Food to include
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Food and drinks should be at body temperature. Cold can shock and weaken digestive system and
also chill the liver and too hot can destroy the mucous membranes.
Any foods from the earth can be eaten
Ideally organic but if looking dull and limp go for non-organic but ensure washed ACV
Ensure daily adequate fibre intake (30grams) from fresh veggies
Sprouting grains such as quinoa, millet, is recommended due to the high enzyme activity and
mineral content they contain
Raw is good for cleansing as long as the digestive system is strong.
Slow cooked foods or steamed is better for weaker systems
At least 2 liters of body temperature water should be drunk daily.
White meat and oily or other fish is easier to digest if wanting to consume animal products.
Green juices daily – any green vegetable or salad foods. Great to use to cleanse when diarrhoea
present
Green smoothies daily with any green veggies or salad . Great to use for cleansing when
constipation present
Beetroot juice is great for assisting a sluggish bowel
Carrot juice is great when wanting to heal mucous membranes
Raw garlic in Juices / smoothies or chewed for antibacterial properties, Especially if dysbiosis (gut
flora imbalance) or mucous present.
Daily Fiber fix
• LSA – ground linseed, sunflower and almond mix
– 3 cups raw linseeds / flaxseeds
– 2 cups raw sunflower seeds
– 1 cup raw almonds
– Grind all together until like a powdery mix add 1 tablespoon daily onto
breakfast. Can be stored in airtight container in the fridge for up to 3
months. Add Chia or psyllium seeds for more effect
– Good for constipated or IBS bowels
Cleansing tea
• Flax / linseed tea. This tea aims to Lubricate and soften stools. It can
also be used to assist nutrient absorption if taken 30 mins before each
meal if leaky gut is suspected
– Boil up 1 tablespoon of flaxseeds in a litre of water in a pan on the
stove. Allow to boil for 3 – 5 mins.
– Once cooled down pop in the fridge for about 12 hours / over-night.
– First thing in the morning simmer 1 cup full with seeds (without seeds
if diverticulitis), keep the rest of the tea in the fridge for the next day.
• For 10 days once a month for three months squeeze the juice of 1 lemon,
grate some of the skin into the mug and add a ¼ teaspoon cayenne
pepper. This helps to kick start the body and put heat in the bowel.
Cayenne has also been shown to reduce colon carcinoma in rats and
increase intestinal transit time.
Healing tea
• When mucous membranes are irritated or gastric reflux is present. ½
teaspoon of slippery elm in alternate warm milk works very quickly to heal
and seal the gut lining.
Fasting
Fasting
• Fasting is a perfectly natural process used in nature by all living
creatures since the beginning of time. Fasting means speeding up
the cleansing and renewal process in the body, by slowing down
normal digestive function by taking a rest from food.
• A rest enables the body to relieve itself from any discomfort it may
be experiencing it helps the body to recover from the daily
onslaught of external influences, such as the stresses and strains
caused by hectic lifestyles and poor quality diet.
• Through allowing the body systems to relax, fasting will
subsequently enhance health and vitality, increasing energy and
motivation.
• It is very common for the bowel to stop moving when fasting and
very important that ensure it does move daily. Enemas and/ or
colonic irrigation or colonic abdominal massage are a must.
The programme
• All that has been mentioned can be put together.
• Fast programmes with all this are heavily discussed and written about by
Bernard Jesnson and Dr Christopher.
• Most naturopathic bowel health specialists will adopt this kind of
programme to increase a clients health then adjust it accordingly.
• All aspects of lifestyle need to be considered and adjusted where needed.
Some basic & important considerations are on next slide.

Testimonial
5 day fasting programme
• Having had problems with food intolerances for years, I have always gone to
nutritionists for help and advice when I am struggling. This year, when they
started to flare up again, I decided to try Nicole's 5 day detox to flush
out my whole system and start again. I can honestly say that, since
finishing it, I feel the best I have done in years. My skin is clearer and
brighter, my energy levels are increased and, best of all, I feel like I
have finally got rid of all the rubbish that has been clogging up my body
for so long, leaving me feeling lighter and healthier.
I found the detox plan much simpler and easier to follow than I had thought
it would be and the benefits have been enormous. I wouldn't hesitate to
recommend this plan and I will definitely be doing it on an annual basis.
7 day fasting and separate colonic treatments
I wrote a review about a digestive problem i had last year this is an update on my results after
having a detox and colonic with nicole and janine. The treatment was painless and stress free ,the 7
day detox was no problem at all ,infact it is something i will do on a regular basis. Nicole has found
what caused my problems and my life has changed for the better. The colonic with janines help was
great and very relaxing. I will be visiting the bodyworks for many years to come.
