Party perfect tresses
from cocktails to family
celebrations to the big bash
The Deep Side Part with Oribe

mist from roots to ends. Use Sculpting Cream at the
roots for lift and grip and Supershine Light on ends for
moisture and incredible sparkle.
2. Create a deep side part following the arch of your
eyebrows and back. Blow dry smooth with a flat
brush. We like Mason Pearson.
3. Set hair section by section with Volumista.
4. Curl each section with a 1-inch curling iron.
Pin each curl with a hair clip. Let it cool.
5. Unpin carefully. Brush through curls to loosen.

Business of Beauty:
Educate, Listen, Surprise&Delight
T
he Scott Miller team had a special treat: a visit from
Peter Lichtenthal, President of Bumble and bumble
and Bernard Zion, Vice President of Global Marketing
of Bumble and bumble, an Estée Lauder brand.
“These are the leaders of the industry,” says Scott Miller. “They
understand customers and know that to serve them best, we
have to educate ourselves, listen to them, surprise them, and
delight them.” The two executives came to Rochester to meet
the staff, thank the team for their support of Estée Lauder, and
to discuss where the beauty industry is headed.
A Little Background
It all began about 20 years ago, when Scott Miller’s business
was still young and he made the decision to carry Bumble and
bumble. Both brands grew up together. Over the years, the
salon has been a laboratory and case study for the company,
and, for the last few years, for its parent company, Estée Lauder.
In addition to Bumble and bumble products, Scott Miller also
offers other luxury Estée Lauder’s brands, including Bobbi
Brown, Jo Malone, and Smashbox—hard-to-get, coveted
products that customers love but can’t find locally, or even
regionally in one store.
Scott Miller has since filled that void. It now serves as a unique
distribution channel for these products and has proven that a
high-end, customer-focused, affordable salon/spa and beauty
apothecary can be successful, even in a market the size of
Rochester. “Estée Lauder and its brands are interested in how
we do business because our business model works,” says
Helen Miller. “We continue to innovate while always keeping the
customer in the center of what we do.” Scott Miller plans to carry
more Estée Lauder products. They have just been awarded the
premium luxury brand, La Mer.
“Our vision from the very beginning was to be a beauty resource
like no other for our clients,” adds Scott. “When I was a young, I
vividly recall walking into big city department stores and the first
impression I got was from the cosmetics area which provided
an ambiance of luxury. It elevated my spirit and everyone else’s.
I loved that experience then and I strive to offer it to everyone
who walks through our doors now.” Scott continues, “Their visit
created a buzz and really inspired the team here. It’s transferrable
energy, too—the kind that is ultimately passed on to our client.”
The Importance of Education
Bumble and bumble has been the main source of Scott Miller’s
continuing education program. “Twice a year, they send their top
stylists and colorists here,” says Scott. “They teach us what they
teach their own staff, and what they are doing on runways around
the world. The way we do things is very consistent with the Bumble
and bumble way. It’s a very deep part of who we are.”
In addition, Estée Lauder sends its top teams to Scott Miller for
other staff training programs. For instance, Bobbi Brown’s top
make-up people train the staff on the latest make-up trends and
techniques. While the executives were in town, they made a trip
to the Scott Miller location in Webster and saw some of that
knowledge being passed onto clients, as a Bobbi Brown makeup event was in full swing.

Beauty At Every Age
Hillary Brotherton, esthetician
We love our laugh lines
and believe that we can
look amazing at any age.
Behold the stunning Meryl
Streep. However, we have
to work for it. Keeping skin healthy and
youthful is a lifelong priority. Here’s my take
on how to smartly incorporate anti-aging
products into your routine.
You at
20
Start thinking about anti-aging products.
This is when skin starts to change. You
already have a regular routine, yes? Wash,
tone, moisturize…and let’s not forget
to exfoliate twice a week. Add a nightly
eye cream. The skin around the eyes is
extremely thin. Adding moisture helps
prevent fine lines, wrinkles and dark circles.
Eyes: SkinCeuticals AOX+ Eye Gel under
Bobbi Brown Extra Eye Repair
Serum: SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF [under
moisturizer in the AM]
Night: Shima Advanced Firming Complex
or Shima Restorative Hydrating Crème
[dry skin]
You at
50 and beyond
A wonderful decade and time to begin
enjoying all that you’ve built. It’s also
time for thinking about a professional
microdermabrasion.You want immediate
results that allow your products to work
even better, don’t you? We know you’re a
disciple of a good eye cream by now. Add a
Wash: Shima Balancing Cleanser [oily/
combo skin], Shima Hydrogel Cleanser
[all skins]
Exfoliate: Shima Exfoliating Cleanser
Tone: Shima Clarifying Toner [oily/combo]
or Balancing Toner [all]
Moisturize: Shima Citrus Moisturizer
Day + Night: Shima Hydrating Eye Crème
You at
30
Welcome to your 30s skin when elasticity
and moisture begin to disappear. Start
using a collagen-boosting serum daily to
plump up skin. A once a week acid-based
peel is smart for skin cell renewal.
Serum: SkinCeuticals Serum 10 AOX+
[sensitive skin]
Peel: SkinCeuticals single or double peel

You at
40
A lack of firmness in your skin. The
appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Your
skin at 40 needs extra care to give it the
best foundation for later years. Trade up to
a heavier eye cream. Wear it day and night
to keep the area well hydrated. Introduce
a serum with vitamins A and C to fight free
radicals. They are out in force now. Finish
with a serious night cream to keep skin
nourished when it has to work the hardest.

serum with peptides to the mix. It increases
collagen production, minimize wrinkles
and thicken the skin…giving new timely
meaning to growing a thick skin.

The Business of Beauty, continued from page 2
“Peter and Bernard loved seeing the event in progress,” adds
Helen. “They saw how happy the staff was to be sharing their
knowledge and passion with clients. The energy just continued
to build, resulting in the creation of a very
positive atmosphere. The energy was quite
palpable.”
The Importance of Listening
The Bumble and bumble team and Estée
Lauder know the beauty business and
its unique challenges and opportunities.
They understand the value of “high touch”
customer service, which is something that
can’t be purchased online or at a mass
retailer.
“High touch is all about listening,” notes
Helen. “It’s about building relationships
with clients, and creating sincere, personal
connections with them. It’s about having
someone to look out for you, the client.” The
high level of trust, expertise, and credibility is
central to the philosophy at Scott Miller, at
Bumble and bumble, and at Estée Lauder.
At Scott Miller, the staff advises customers,
teaches them how to use products and
guides them on techniques.
The Importance of Surprise
Peter talked to the team about how essential
it is to surprise people by knowing what they
want, delivering it to them and then giving
them more.
He told a story about staying in a beautiful hotel in Europe and
realizing he had forgotten his reading glasses. He went to the
concierge’s desk and asked if they knew where he could purchase
some new glasses. The concierge
immediately responded by asking “What
strength glasses do you need: strong,
medium, or weak?” Peter was escorted to
an organized collection of reading glasses
available in all strengths and a variety of
styles, located behind the concierge’s
desk. Peter was happily surprised with the
exemplary level of service.
High touch
is all about
listening. It’s
about building
relationships
with clients,
and creating
sincere, personal
connections
with them.
Helen Miller
That’s the sort of the surprise people need
in their lives. That’s what customers need
in their lives.
The Importance of Delight
Customer delight happens when all the
pieces are in place: an educated, inspired
staff, all of whom are doing their jobs
with the best products available and with
the very best intentions for their clients.
Customers, Peter says, want what they
want, when they want it. They are very
time conscious and have a lot of choices.
“Our job is to make the choices simpler,
and even more joyful,” says Scott. “It’s
not only our job, it’s our passion to be in
a position of helping them feel good about
themselves.”
“Clients always come first here,” he adds.
“And, when they’re happy, it’s a beautiful
thing.” 

Put Your Best Feet Forward
Kathy Miles, Nail Tech
Ahhh, it’s paraffin season.
We hear it all the time.
Nobody sees my toes in
the winter. Why bother?
But we still use our feet, don’t we? Winter
care for our feet is very important. Cracking,
callous and dryness can all be minimized
with pedicures and home care all winter.
Winter is a great time to experience paraffin.
We do a sports pedicure that ends with a
paraffin foot treatment rather than polish.
A great way for your feet to get warm and
hydrated and you can put your boots right
on with no dry time.
Our seasonal pedicures run from October
through March with a different theme
each month. Included during the seasonal
pedicure is a paraffin hand treatment.
This year we are using select Philosophy
products. The scent and feel of these
products are winter wonderful. The
7
products are available in our store at Scott
Miller.
At-home care is essential for healthy happy
feet! Three steps are all you need: file,
exfoliate and rehydrate. All should be done
weekly for the best results. We have some
amazing products for each of the steps. A
selection of our favorites: Shima, philosophy,
Foot Logix. Schedule a pedicure to get our
personal recommendations for you. 
