Lake George Association
Annual Report
October 2013
Membership and Financial Reports for the Fiscal Year 2012
Director’s Message
Financial Report
Dear Members and Friends,
It was a good year for the Association. Our Unrestricted Net Assets increased by
over $90,000. Our audit, prepared in accordance with GAAP principles on an
accrual basis for Non-Profit Organizations, is a consolidation of several classes of
assets, liabilities, income, and expense. For a more complete understanding of the
numbers, we look at them based upon basic operations (which includes releases
from restricted grants in prior years), new grants, and investment performance.
Your active membership in the Lake George Association places you among the
thousands of individuals and families who have made it their commitment to
protect Lake George. We are taking our turn among the generations of champions
of Lake George’s protection and conservation.
The Lake George Association and its dedicated and passionate members have been
protecting the Lake’s exceptional water quality for over 128 years. And now, with
our excellent working relationships with partner agencies, municipalities and nonprofits, we continue our valuable work.
Each generation has had its challenges: stopping trash and ashes from being
dumped into the Lake back in the 1800s, monitoring septic systems in the early
1900s, helping to secure control of the water level for the public good in the 1940s,
inhibiting the discharge of holding tanks from boats in the 1970s, helping to create
and later enhance the powers of the Lake George Park Commission, and raising
awareness of land-use practices, development, stormwater, and invasive species.
Our generation is meeting the challenges we face with new invasive species,
intensified weather patterns causing increasingly heavy stream flow, and educating
current lake users and future generations about water quality impacts.
Because of our generous member donations we are able to act quickly and with
great agility to get projects under contract and up and running while we wait for
reimbursement from state and local funds. We are truly working together with
partners at many levels to accomplish projects that no one organization could
muster alone - and are stretching your membership dollars to maximize protection
for the Lake.
There are big challenges ahead, but we are prepared. We learn from past generations
to protect future generations. Our practical, steadfast approach to the long term
protection of the Lake is working. Please continue to renew your membership and
stick with us.
C. Walter Lender
Executive Director

For the next generation...
On a strictly accrual operating basis, we had a loss of approximately $102,000.
However, $52,000 of expenses were non-cash charges and $67,000 in
reimbursements from our Asian Clam and Storm Water projects from our partners
were not received until early 2013. So, overall, we covered all our cash operational
needs by a slight margin.
Our joint loan with The Fund for Lake George on the West Brook Conservation
Initiative was reduced by $150,170 to $431,312. Since year end, it has been reduced
further to just over $316,000.
On restricted grants that are released over a number of years, principally from the
Froehlich Foundation, we received $384,000.
Investment performance for 2012 in Unrestricted Funds was up 11.6%, slightly
higher than our blended investment policy benchmarks.
Many thanks to you all for your continued support.

LGA 2013 Annual Report - 3
Lake Saving Projects: big and small - they all add up to protect the Lake!
Each year the LGA works to identify priority projects, secure funding, and then implement those previously identified projects to address various
stormwater runoff issues throughout the watershed. Some of these projects are large and well-known - such as West Brook - but many are smaller, and
not nearly as glamorous. Often once they are completed, you can’t even tell that they are there since they involve underground structures that capture
or infiltrate stormwater. But even though these projects may not be visible- they are all extremely important! Each one adds up as more and more
stormwater is kept from running into the Lake, and together they are able to make a big difference in the protection of Lake George.
West Brook Conservation Initiative
Last fall, the West Brook Conservation Initiative received over 18,000 plugs, plants, trees and shrubs. The site then received
about 6 to 8 inches of topsoil and was seeded and mulched. The site looked great this spring (see photos to left)and many
of the native plants around the ponds bloomed this summer. The next phase of construction of the walkways and paths
is scheduled for this fall. Once the paths are completed, the stormwater will be turned on and the site will be a fully
functioning stormwater treatment area.
Putnam Stormwater
Fall 2012
Fall 2012
This photo of stormwater running down a
driveway in Putnam used to occur during
any storm event. After receiving a grant
from the LCBP and the Helen V. Froelich
Foundation, the LGA was able to remediate
this stormwater issue. With input and
oversight from the LGA, the project was
designed by WCSWCD and constructed by the Town of Putnam Highway
department. It utilizes dry wells and underground storage chambers to
capture and infiltrate runoff. Once installed and covered, you can’t see these
structures any longer, but they are there, hidden away underground doing
their job. Overflow then runs into a vegetated swale to be infiltrated into the
ground or flows into a nearby stream.

West Brook Streambank Stabilization
The above photos show the before, during and after views of a project on a section of
streambank that was severely eroding during tropical storm Irene. Utilizing funding secured
by the LGA from the Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) and the Helen V. Froehlich foundation, the streambank was restored with very large
boulders, coir logs and vegetation. The stream itself was restored to its original width and some of the sinuosity of the stream was restored as well.
Shrubs were planted through the DEC’s Trees for Tribs program. The project was designed by Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District
(WCSWCD) and Morrissey Construction completed the work. The LGA assisted with the design and served as project oversight during construction.
Sediment Basins
In a joint project between the Lake George
Association, the WCSWCD, the town of Hague
and the town of Bolton, over 1300 cubic yards
of material were removed from seven sediment
basins - one of which is a sediment pond on
Hague Brook. (photo at near right). This is
roughly the equivalent of 110 dump truck loads
of material! In addition to cleaning out the
basins, the inlet to the Hague Brook sediment
basin (shown in photo far right) was repaired to
once again split the stream with half going to the
sediment basin and the other half remaining in
the original stream channel.

Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS): Education, Spread Prevention, and Management
The LGA works to protect Lake George from
AIS year round. In the winter months, much
planning and research goes into preparing
for the Lake Steward Program, Asian Clam
management activities, and other AIS work for
the summer months.
Lake Steward Program
The LGA’s award-winning Lake Steward
Program seeks to protect the Lake from the
introduction and spread of invasive species
that could negatively alter the Lake’s ecosystem,
shoreline property values, and the region’s
tourism-driven economy. From 2008-2012, the
LGA’s lake stewards inspected almost 25,000
boats at high traffic launches around the Lake,
.
removed over 400 AIS samples from boats, and educated
around 60,000 boaters about invasive species spread prevention.
In 2012, lake stewards were stationed at five high traffic boat launches and inspected 6,972 boats. Within two weeks of their launch in Lake George,
boaters had visited 155 unique waterbodies located in 13 different states throughout the United States and 2 Provinces in Canada.

Week. Staff and displays were
also at the Great Upstate
New York Boat Show and
Adirondack Day at the

to educate the public about
aquatic invasive species.

At left: Lake stewards show off a sample
of Eurasian watermilfoil removed from
a boat prior to launching at Mossy
Point. From all five launches in 2012,
lake stewards removed 272 aquatic
organism samples from 189 boats and
trailers launching and retrieving, and
identified 131 samples to be an invasive
species. Six different invasive species
were identified: Eurasian watermilfoil,
curly-leaf pondweed, water chestnut,
zebra mussels, quagga mussels, and spiny
water flea.
Asian Clam Management
Asian clam management activites continued throughout 2012. As of the end of 2012
there were 27+ acres of Asian clam infestation known in Lake George in 8 different
locations throughout the Lake. The four new small sites found during the fall lakewide survey were prioritized for ‘site specific eradication’ while larger, previously
treated sites were treated with a ‘containment’ approach for fall treatment efforts.
The fall treatment effort included the installation of 6+ acres of benthic barriers
weighted down with rebar and sand bags. Mats were installed in 7 of 8 known
locations with no fall treatment at the Norowal Marina site. Fall treatment efforts
cost over $400,000. These mats were left in place over the winter and removed in the
spring of 2013. As a member of the Lake George Asian Clam Task Force, the LGA
continues to play a leading role in the fight to protect Lake George from this invasive
species.

Education: From the Classroom to the Lake
The LGA’s education staff is involved in a wide variety of education programs year-round,
from field trips to in-school programs and working with special clubs and groups.
Above: The Lake Rangers, an after-school club at Lake
George Elementary, participate in an activity to see that
everyone contributes to the pollution in a Lake and
that actions can be taken to reduce that pollution. An
additional 10 sessions of Lake Rangers were taught by
LGA staff throughout the school year filled with activities
about many water quality issues in the Lake George
watershed.
Above: Students from Putnam Central School show off the fish they designed during their
Fishin’ for Additions Program. This program was one that was available for teachers to
choose from in the LGA’s In-School Programming Guide which provides an opportunity
for area teachers to collaborate with LGA educators, and incorporate Lake George water
quality education into their established curriculum. LGA Educators traveled around
the watershed and brought a turtle program to Adirondack Enrichment, Salmon in the
Classroom to Ticonderoga and Whitehall, and watershed education to Lake George
Kindergarten.
At Right: Students identify and sort macroinvertebrates that they had caught during a
stream monitoring field trip. A total of 1,087 students participated in stream monitoring
programs with us at the Lake George Recreation Center, Queensbury Central School, Lake
George Elementary School, and at a Girl Scout Camporee at Camp Woodhaven.

Floating Classroom
The Floating Classroom is an aquatic adventure for students and
adults interested in learning about the Lake George watershed and
the exceptional quality of the Lake’s water. Participants investigate
different aspects of the Lake’s ecosystem and learn how to protect
and preserve this living water body.
In 2012, there were 1,886 participants, including 1,355 students
from 18 school districts that took part in the Floating Classroom.

Lake-Friendly Living: Stopping stormwater one garden at a time
Rain Garden Demonstration Projects
Rain gardens are landscaped depressions that are designed to capture and filter stormwater from
roofs, driveways, and other hard surfaces. They can be a great addition to your property to help
protect Lake George.
In the fall of 2012 we worked with the Lake Champlain-Lake George Regional Planning Board
and the Silver Bay YMCA to install a native plant rain garden on the Silver Bay YMCA campus
to address stormwater runoff on site. In addition to helping to design and install the garden, we
created interpretive educational signage for the garden as well.
In the spring of 2013 we installed
another native plant demonstration
rain garden at the north end of the Lake
at the Ticonderoga Public Beach with
volunteers from Keller Williams Realty.

The paper used for this annual report was produced and donated with pride by the employees of International Paper’s Ticonderoga mill. The wood fiber comes from Adirondack
forests that have been managed responsibly for more than a century and are harvested according to the principles of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and the Forest Stewardship Council.
