2007 Rules
SERIES BULLETIN
1. An official Great American Solo Series (GASS) Bulletin will be published periodically (at least eight
times per year) in hardcopy and on the GASS website during the season, and sent to all currently
active GASS event competitors, sponsors, and any Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) member
(upon request). The GASS Bulletin will contain the following:
• Advertising for Series Sponsors,
• Flyers of Upcoming Events and Year-end Banquet,
• Schedules of all CenDiv and GLDiv Solo Events,
• Points of Contact for the following:
- National SCCA Solo Administrators,
- GASS Sanctioning Body (Committee),
- CenDiv and GLDiv Solo Administrators, - SCCA Regional/Club Solo Administrators.
• GASS Event Articles and Event Results,
• Year-end Points Standings for all competitors eligible for GASS Championship Awards,
• General and Special interest articles and announcements (Editorial license applies),
• Advertising of the following:
- Flyers and Entry Forms with the following fee structure:
• Free for GASS-Sanctioned Events,
• $25/Page for Other Events.
- Classified Ads:
- $5/Two (2) Issues.
- Commercial Ads:

SERIES POINTS & AWARDS
2. The Great American Solo Series will be comprised of several (typically 6 to 8) Solo events. This
number will be set before the beginning of the competition season, but may be subject to change due
to circumstances beyond the GASS Committee’s control (eg. loss of an event site).
3. GASS Year-end Points and Championship Awards will be awarded as follows:

Competitors who complete at least one timed run on each day of an event will receive a minimum of 20 points.
Class Year-end ties will be resolved by awarding duplicate awards.
Competitors must compete in at least three (3) GASS events in the same Car Class to qualify for
Year-end Awards. Only one award will be given to competitors who qualify in more than one
Car Class.
Competitors' best GASS event finishes will be used to compute Year-end Points in each Car
Class based on the table below. The score for each event used for Year-end Points will be
rounded to the nearest whole point. Maximum score for non-winners is 99 points.

• Year-end Awards will be distributed in accordance with the current SCCA Solo Rule Book, based
on the average number of competitors in each Car Class or the total number of Year-end eligible
entrants in each Car Class, whichever provides more awards. Non-eligible competitors finishing in
a Year-end Award position will not be awarded a Year-end Award and the award positions for the
associated Class will be increased by one if more eligible competitors exist in the Class.
• Rookie of the Year Awards will be awarded in accordance with GASS Rules. To be eligible, competitors must have never competed in more than two (2) GASS (or predecessor CENDIV Series)
events during any competition year. Rookie Points will be awarded beginning with the event at
which the competitor declares eligibility. The index shown below will be used to adjust competitors’ times for award of points for each event.

4. Year-end Championship Awards will be presented at an Awards & Dinner Banquet to be held after
completion of the GASS competition season. The Banquet time and place will be announced in the
GASS Bulletin.
EVENTS
5. Event organizers must submit a completed GASS Event Bid form before being considered for a GASS
event. Bid forms may be obtained from the Regional Liaison or from the GASS Website and should be
returned to the Regional Liaison.
6. All events must be endorsed by the GASS Organization.
7. All events must adhere to the current SCCA Solo Rules and GASS Committee directives (including the
GASS Rules herein). It is STRONGLY recommended that events be structured per SCCA Divisional
or National Championship procedures (except for formal SCCA sanctioning).
8. Event organizers must forward official results containing the following information for each entrant to
the GASS Pointskeeper within seven (7) days of the event:
- Entrant’s Full Name,
- Car Number,
- SCCA Region/Club Affiliation,
- Results of any Protests,
- Membership Number with Expiration Date,
- Raw Times with Penalties for Each Run.
- Car Class, Make, Model, Color,
It is preferred that the information described above be provided the day of the event if possible. If a
computer is used for registration and/or event results, then a floppy disk or CD and a hard copy printout
is preferred. Results will be published in the GASS Bulletin, which will be delivered to all entrants; so
the event organizers do not need to publish or distribute results.
9. Event organizers must send the following information to the GASS Bulletin Editor within seven (7)
days after their event:
• An Event Summary Article (preferably via e-mail),
• Entrant’s Full Name, Address and Phone Number,
• Entrant’s Membership Number with Expiration Date and SCCA Region/Club of Record.
COMPETITORS
10. Competitors may enter each event only once and may not enter an event in more than one Car Class.
11. Competitors must be CenDiv or GLDiv SCCA members prior to the last event they run to earn Yearend Awards.
12. The Official GASS Logo Sticker must be displayed in an upright position on both sides of each competitor's vehicle during GASS event competition.

From the Chair……
Where has the solo season gone?! By the time that this is in
most people’s hands, the 2007 Great American Solo Series
will be history! The only activity left will be the banquet in
Bowling Green, Ohio on October 27th. It’s been a fun year
autocrossing, but it will soon be time to gets plans in motion
for 2008.
The flyer for the banquet appears in this issue of the bulletin. Dee Schweikle has made the arrangements at Snook’s
Dream Car Garage. She and George stopped there to check
out the facility and indicated that it is a neat collection of
cars and memorabilia. Please plan on attending and remember
to send in your reservation in plenty of time. An accurate
head count is essential in assuring that there is plenty of
food. There will be a town hall meeting in the afternoon before the banquet and if your club is interesting in hosting a
series event in 2008, please bring along to this afternoon
meeting. The bid packet is available on the series website –
soloseries.org. A recap of the 2007 season will also take
place and comments and suggestions are welcome from everyone. This is one of your chances to make the series better!
There are also going to be a few positions opening up on the
board. To date, we have had a couple of folks indicate interest in serving on the committee. Also, don’t be surprised if
one of us taps you on the shoulder and says “Can we talk?”
Best of luck to everyone attending the Solo Nationals in
Topeka at Heartland Park this year. From what I’ve heard,
the courses are laid out in a manner that we typically don’t

see in Topeka. They are designed by Karen Babb and Roger
“Houston” Johnson and should prove interesting. If you
aren’t able to go to Nationals, check out the SCCA website
during the day each day to get up to the minute results.

Note from the Editor….
It’s September, the trees will be turning soon, the days and nights will start
being a little cooler, and that means it is time to pack for the trip to Kansas!
If this is your first trip to the SOLO Nationals, you need to pack for every
season. Kansas weather can be very unpredictable the end of September.
Last year CPL ran with temperatures in the low 50’s, but by 5th heat when
CP ran, it was nice and warm!
The last time I looked at the entry list, there were over a thousand drivers
registered. I am pleasantly surprised to see so many entries in spite of the
soaring fuel prices!
Best of luck to all of you who are traveling to Topeka for Nationals this
year. Be safe and have a great time!
Last, but not least -- thank you to all of you who ran the Great Lakes Division Solo Divisional at Grissom Aeroplex. I hope you had as much fun as I
did!

AutoxPalooza – GASS Event #4 – July 27-29, 2007
It was Miami Valley Sports Car Club’s (MVSCC) great pleasure to conduct our 3rd
Annual AutoxPalooza as event #4 of the Great American Solo Series (GASS) this
year at Wright State University’s Ervin J. Nutter Center. Nutter Center’s unique layout provided participants with a great site for challenging courses utilizing two of the
front lots, great views, and some wonderful professionally-swept asphalt on which to
play. As it has come to be expected as part of the AutoxPalooza tradition, the party
and food were spectacular…but we’ll get to that later.
The weather looked threatening Friday night during registration and tech, but overall
most stayed mostly dry as there was only an occasional light mist or rain. Both Saturday and Sunday morning, competitors were treated to Krispy Kreme donuts, bagels,
coffee, and fruit sponsored by FattBoyz. Fortunately, despite negative weather reports, Saturday dawned to a dry track. Saturday’s course was the more technical of
the two days with the “Great Esses” leading into a pay-me-now or pay-me-later optional slalom and into the second lot. The second lot, actually Lot 1, had a number of
off-camber turns in which to sucker one in, but also had plenty of room for a myriad
of lines through the sweeping turns. Everyone really liked Saturday’s course and the
competition was hot and heavy in many classes. After the first day, some of the
tighter classes were: BSP with Hector Fontanet holding a 0.189 sec lead over Adam
Popp; AS with Richie Newman holding a 0.191 sec over Kris Bjerkaas (who was a
mere 0.633 sec over Chett Wohlgamuth); EM with Gordon Kinney holding a 0.268
sec lead over Lee Miller; and NASA D with Jim Begovich holding exactly a 0.500 sec
lead over Stephen Jacobs. Mark Lamm (CM) led the field in raw time with a 42.609
sec after day 1 and Stuart Phipps had a slim lead on the index. Five runs were given
to everyone and with the quick turn-over, timed competition was done by 1:15 p.m.
with fun runs from 1:30 to 3:15 p.m. What a treat, to get to go out with some of the
premier drivers in the country and learn from them in your own car or just have more
fun!
The party was held on-site Sat evening with all you can eat fried chicken, macaroni
salad, corn, cookies, cakes, pop, water, and all sorts of other scrumptious treats. A
veritable feast was had by all in a nice relaxing atmosphere spent with friends. Couldn’t ask for anything better, except for maybe the rain (which hit at sunset) to have held
off just a little bit later.
Competitors had a lot of compliments for Saturday’s course, only to walk Sunday’s
course Sat afternoon and realize the best was yet to come. Richie Newman and Chett
Wohlgamuth explained the course best by saying it was like Bristol in the first lot,
and Laguna Seca in the second lot. As if listening to those two announce wasn’t
enough, hearing Richie broadcast live from the passenger seat of Lee Miller’s EM
Locost Lotus 7 car was a real treat. Watching the AS, CP, ESP, and mod cars transition through the offsets into the second lot heading down to the garage (or Chicago
Box) and seeing who had enough faith to just thread the needle was a hoot.

ESP was also fun seeing the two older Pontiac Trans Ams of Dave Kutney and Rob
Snell battling it out – reminded one of years gone by until you saw the Nissan 300ZX
of Russ Charlton and the newer WS6 Trans Am of Andrew Locke in the mix too. CM
provided the biggest turn out with 6 entries, but CP, AS, ESP, GS, and BSP were right
behind with 5 cars each.
One of the tightest battles was in EM with Gordon Kinney leading by 0.268 sec after
Saturday to hold on to the win by 0.173 sec after Lee’s stong performance Sunday. In
GS, Jim Wylie led by 0.528 sec the first day only to have Joe Anderson turn a 49.2 sec
run on Sunday for the come from behind win of 0.632 sec. In BSP, Hector Fontanet
held off Adam Popp by a scant 0.189 sec after day one to win by 0.782 overall. In FP,
John Hull led by 0.505 sec the first day only to squeak out the final victory by only
0.259 sec over Eric Grassman. In CM, the battle was for 2nd place behind Mark
Lamm with Ray Thomas, Bill Smiley, Randall Turner, and Craig Carr separated by
0.831 sec from 2nd to 5th. Fastest overall raw time was Mark Lamm (CM) with a
83.615 sec followed by Stuart Phipps (FM) with a 85.260 sec and Peter Smith (AM)
with a 85.798 sec. On the Index, there were calls of a “fix” when the course designer
in a certain FS car driven by Kent Weaver took the win by 0.123 sec over Stuart
Phipps who was 0.124 sec ahead of Darrel Padberg. Mark Lamm (CM), Dave Kutney
(ESP), Bryan Schafer (SS), James Scott (CS), Gustavo Hammerly (STS2), Richie
Newman (AS), Kris Bjerkaas (AS), and Dean Rindler (EP) rounded out the top
eleven.
Competition ended at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday after five runs with trophies, more food,
and many cool door prizes presented at 12:30 p.m. If you weren’t there, the trophies
were very cool embroidered fuzzy blankets with 6” pylons for the place. After trophies, even many of those with long trips ahead chose to stay and take more fun runs.

YE CONES BE WARNED! ARRR !
Ahoy me mateys!!! WAI put on GASS event #5, Ye Cones Be Warned!, which
brought 160 pirates and their grand sailing vessels to that parking lot known as Miller
Park Sea to try their luck at winning the big treasure. Kathy Lang was the Captain of
this event. She was clothed in complete pirate garb and looked a lot like Jack Sparrow, except for the moustache and beard. The weather was a bit steamy, but still
pleasant except for one overnight storm. The pirates attending had quite a course to
follow. Some of them were sporting their Jolly Rogers. It started with an encounter
at Davey Cone’s Locker followed by Shiver Me Timbers, then taking a right at Captain Hook’s Turn. Then it was quickly through the Flying Dutchman followed by
another tight right through the Crow’s Nest. Next it was a trip around the Pirate’s
Peninsula and another tricky right into the Seagull Slide (there are usually hundreds of
seagulls sitting in that lot). Then, unfortunately, it was time to Walk the Plank, and if
you survived that it was a right into the Peg Leg and around Land’s End where they
were required to heave to and lower their sails. Of course, this was completely reversed the next day.
Everyone registered received a free sponsor T-shirt, and if you wanted to buy the shirt
with the pirate course on the back it was only $10. Breakfast grub was provided each
morning with lunch available both days. The big pirate feast occurred on Saturday
night where grog was served along with a bounty of food for everyone. Yo-ho-ho and
a bottle of rum!!! It seems we had landed at Jamaica or some other Caribbean island,
for there were palm trees everywhere, parrots, and steel drum music playing.
There was some hot competition between the pirates this weekend. Linda Hansen and
Dee Schweikle were very close to each other all weekend and finished .3 sec apart
with Dee capturing the win. In another close competition in C-Mod, Ray Thomas,
Don Elzinga, and Pat Bullis were all within .3 sec of each other as well. There were
many other close finishes.. Clemens Burger had the best Raw Time of the weekend,
and Jeff Cashmore had the best PAX time.
For those winning treasure, a trophy made of diamond-shaped Plexiglas was presented
to them. WAI gold coins and other booty were given to some who had filled out their
event evaluations. A good time was had by all! Arrr!!! Good luck mates on your
next treasure hunt this season.

The Very First Great Lakes Division
SOLO Divisional Championship And GASS Event #6
Grissom Aeroplex, Peru, IN, August 17-19, 2007
History was made the weekend of August 17-19, 2007 – the very first Great Lakes Solo Divisional Championship was run at Grissom Aeroplex in Peru, Indiana. There were 126 competitors from GLDiv, CenDiv and MidDiv. Jason Tipple, GLDiv Divisional Steward and Marlene
Obenour were the organizers of this inaugural event. Chief Steward of the Divisional, Marcus
Merideth also offered a Test and Tune which was run on an asphalt area of Grissom for those
drivers who wanted practice for the upcoming Solo Nationals.
The format of the event was the same as the past 10 years’ CENDiv events with Regions of
GLDiv supplying the various chiefs. Elsewhere in this article is a list of those chiefs who volunteered their time and expertise to make this event so special.
Larry Harts designed two very challenging and technical courses and managed to avoid the
bumpy pavement. The shifter kart drivers gave their approval on Friday afternoon, and they are
the drivers with the most complaints about the bumpy surface.
Drivers were welcomed with snacks and pop on Friday evening which was supplied by Aim
Tuning, one of the many great sponsors for the Divisional.
On Saturday morning, workers were supplied with bottled water donated by Ideasphere, Inc.
from Peru, IN, another of our sponsors. And, between Heats 2 and 3, Tire Rack sponsored
lunch from Subway.
Detroit Region donated the use of their “Fun Mover” equipment truck for our use for timing and
scoring.
Trophy winners were treated to wonderful trophies and giveaways supplied by Solo Performance Specialists (SPS) from St. Louis. First place trophies were personalized disk brake clocks
which have various motor sounds to wake you up. The second place trophies were frosted blue
tankards with the Divisional logo on them.
There were many close races. C Stock’s Timothy McIntosh beat Dan Stone by a mere 0.693
second. In F Stock Ladies, Tracy Dziengel won over Joan Karnas by 0.353 for her first Divisional championship. Jack Burns beat course designer, Larry Harts by 0.043 to take the H
Stock win. Dave Kutney won over Dave Feighner in his 1970 Pontiac Trans Am by a margin
of .394 for the ESP win. Julia Abersold won Street Mod by .037 over John Fessler and Alan
Scheidler beat JT (the Kid) McClintock by 0.323 for the Formula 125 win. FTD overall was
won by Bruce Domeck in B Modified with a 2 day combined time of 78.383.

2007 GASS Series Solo Contingency Program brought to you by MidAtlantic Motorsport and Hoosier Tire Midwest:
Hoosier Racing Tires purchased during the 2007 season from Mid-Atlantic Motorsport Inc. must be used on all four wheel positions at all GASS events you participate in. Hoosier decals must be visible on both sides and on the front of the vehicle.
Mid-Atlantic Motorsport decals must be visible on both sides of the vehicle. The participant must supply his/her name, social security number, current address, telephone number, car model, competition class and tire size(s) when claiming an
award. Redemption forms are available from Mid-Atlantic Motorsport. All SOLO
classes are eligible except for F125 and Street tire classes. Freight, mounting or
balancing is not included with tire awards. Participant must comply with all applicable GASS Series rules and regulations. All tire awards must be claimed by
12/01/2007.
Awards
The awards are based on the official 2007 GASS Championship Series yearend
trophy positions in each class. In the event of a tie, awards will be distributed the
same as the GASS trophy positions.
1-3 yearend award qualifiers: 1st place - 1 tire
4-6 yearend award qualifiers: 1st place - 1 tire, 2nd place - 1 set (4) tire services
7+ yearend award qualifiers: 1st place - 2 tires, 2nd place - 1 tire, 3rd place - 1 set
(4) tire services
