VALENCIA LAKES Editor: Joy Rosen OCTOBER — DECEMBER 2010 V o i c e COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER 16003 Valencia Club Drive, Wimauma, FL 33598 | Phone: 800-875-2176 Valencia Lakes Café Welcomes Chef Michael by Joy Rosen In the immediate Wimauma vicinity, there is not a predominance of good restaurants. Yes, one can go to Brandon or to Tampa, but why not try our very own café? Michael Priola has been hired as our very own Executive Chef. Michael was born and raised in southern Germany and moved to Florida in the early 1980’s. After arriving in the United States, Michael worked as an apprentice in his father’s restaurant in Carrollwood while taking various courses that qualified him to become certified as an executive chef. Chef Michael is the owner of a world class catering business in Tampa. This will enable him to cater major events here at Valencia Lakes. With the addition of the oven to the café, we will not have to utilize outside vendors. Michael’s work experience includes working in Armani’s, the Hyatt Regency, Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center and the Apollo Beach Bistro. Very often, he is called upon to judge culinary arts events. In addition to judging, Chef Michael actively participates in many culinary contests. He competed in Miami at the Fifth Annual Chef for America’s Cup, an international competition, for which he won the gold medal. His winning dish was an alligator tail appetizer. Additionally, he won a silver medal at the Super Team Competition in Orlando. His winning entrée consisted of chorizo rolled roast beef flank and pulled beef with vegetables and a roasted cilantro and garlic demiglaze. Michael is an active member of the American Culinary Foundation and was induced into the American Academy of Chefs. He was featured in Restaurant Forum’s Top 20 Chefs for the year 2007. Michael will bring a revamped café to Valencia Lakes. A variety of new items will be added to the menu as well as possibly a salad and pastry bar. Michael also is anxious to please the Valencia Lakes residents and guests and will try to honor special requests whenever possible. Satisfying his customers is his top priority. We are in for a treat if we consume any of the meals he prepares and who knows? Maybe someday soon, Gordon Ramsey will come to Valencia Lakes to commend Chef Michael on a job well done! Valencia Lakes Celebrities by Joy Rosen Five of our very own Valencia Lakes residents recently became media celebrities. Marie and Dave Sigler, as well as Jennie Stevens, were featured in the Home Seeker section of the Tampa Tribune in a full page article entitled, “Valencia Lakes is Haven for Active Seniors.” The Siglers told of their choosing GL Homes because of the reputation of the builder. They emphasized their appreciation of the diversity Marie and Dave Sigler of the community, the fabulous staff and the broad range of activities. Marie and Dave are active participants in community life including working out at the gym, attending shows, as well as being members of “Dining In” and the Travel Club. Marie is also a member of the Women’s Club and is an organizer of the “Toys for Tots” during the holiday season. Dave is a member of the Fishing Club. Jennie Stevens portrayed the friendliness of all the residents. She, too, is involved in the community as a member of the Singles’ Group and Travel Club. Marie Wise was awarded the distinction of gaining Senior Real Estate Specialist designation. In order to receive this designation, she has shown her commitment and dedication to real estate by taking additional training to better serve the over 55 population. Michelle Schaefer was featured in The Observer. Michelle has recently retired after an illustrious career in the Army. Starting out as an Army Nurse, she then went on to Officers Candidate School and became a Lieutenant Colonel. A veteran of the Gulf War, Michelle has spent a good part of her career working in Afghanistan with the Afghani people to determine their wants and needs as well as to improve their relationships with Americans. A person who has experienced “real life” in Afghanistan, Michelle can communicate what Afghani life is like beyond what the media allows us to know. She emphasizes how alike people are all over the world. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa and a Happy and Healthy 2011. SOFTBALL SPOTLIGHT by Joanne Nelson Batter up! The Valencia Lakes Villains were in full swing this summer against our Sun City rivals. Always up for a challenge, our hard-working athletes deserve kudos for putting it all on the line–the baseline, that is–to win every game. This column is dedicated to our guys, and each newsletter will feature one of our neighbors on the team. We’ve already met Dan DiGuiseppe and Dennis Pagoaga. Now at the plate: Bill Barreau. Bill joined the Villains in November, 2009 just after moving here. He played softball for many years in Wisconsin and wanted to join the team because he knew it would be a great way to meet new friends at Valencia Lakes. An exceptional outfielder, Bill enjoys playing nearly any position. Growing up on a dairy farm in Cazenovia, Wisconsin, Bill admired Robin Yount and his favorite team was the Milwaukee Braves. Today he remains an avid Milwaukee Brewers fan. Bill has been married to wife Sue for 31 years and says, “Our dream has always been to move to Florida to enjoy the sunshine and the beach.” Together with their dog Snickers, 6½, they are contented residents of Cobble Mill Drive. Other family members include daughter Nicole, 27, and son Chris, 24, who both live and work in Madison, Wisconsin. Bill is responsible for the cash management of Penda Corporation where he’s been employed for 26 years. Besides softball, Bill loves tennis, pickleball, golf, walking Snickers, and any other aerobic activity. Thanks for helping us know you better, Bill! 2 VALENCIA LAKES Upcoming Events You Won’t Want to Miss Fishing Club Expo—Wanna win? What a great time on the gambling boat, The Big M Casino. Louise & Bob Ferla were kind enough to make all of the arrangements. There was a bus to take us to Ft. Myers and a wonderful buffet dinner once we got on the beautiful boat. It was a magnificent night for a cruise. Thanks to Bob & Louise for their wonderful job. CPR 101 by Joy Rosen Fourteen Valencia Lakes residents recently became certified in CPR. Instructors Gene Pliska and Linda Sheldon from the Sun City Center Emergency Squad came to the clubhouse and demonstrated the proper technique for administering CPR, using the AED (automated external defibrillator, and performing the Heimlich Maneuver. Active practice on “dummies”, as well as the viewing of an interactive film enabled the participants to internalize these life saving techniques. Residents should be aware there is an AED machine located in the gym on wall where the weights are kept. Also, if help is needed, please call any of the following people after calling 911. We have a lot of exciting Ladies Day trips planned throughout the year which will be open to everyone in the community. We will also be electing a new Board of Directors for January 2011. Our objective is to engage in trips, luncheons, charitable campaigns and volunteering. Please join us for the next meeting. New members welcome. Bicycle Club By Sandie Papa/Club President NEWS FROM THE PICKLEBALL CLUB The Photography Club of Valencia Lakes includes members from beginners to advanced. The club meets the second Thursday of each month in the Aerobics room. Meeting agendas include sharing our pictures from our “photo shoots”, discussing various topics related to photography, having speakers and classes, and taking photo trips. For more information, contact Gail Riba at [email protected] By John Doellinger By Judy Poorman The number of pickleball players at Valencia Lakes continues to grow, and at last count, the membership is sixty-two members. Serious about learning the rules of the game, as well as the skills/drills necessary to improve their game, while maintaining a fun atmosphere for this fast-growing sport, the Valencia Lakes Pickleball Club hosted its first USAPA workshop back in April. To continue this common theme throughout the year, especially with new players, a series of Mentor/Player Training sessions is being offered to members, who have paid their club initiation fee. Club members, who have volunteered to mentor, are: Sue Barreau, Bob Cohen, Leon Hinson, Doug Kurowski, Ed Markowitz, Judy and Michael Poorman, Dott and Jim Smith, Ginny Stick, and Mary and George Vanderveer. The first session was held on May 22nd, with the remaining sessions continuing every other Saturday morning until December 4th. Details for these sessions are distributed to all club members via e-mail. Want to become a member of the pickleball club? Contact Judy Poorman ([email protected]) for information and registration form. The Bicycle Club accommodates all kinds of riders. We schedule one ride a week, alternating between Wednesdays and Saturdays to include people who are still working and people who are committed to other social activities on the weekends. Of course, some of us ride both days. Most places that we go offer opportunities for rides of different lengths and at different speeds. Safety is always a priority, so rides are on paved trails in parks or on paved streets in quiet neighborhoods. The bike paths we have ridden on so far are in Flatwoods Park, Fort DeSoto, the Upper Tampa Bay Trail, the St. Petersburg waterfront, the Pinellas Trail, and the Tampa Bayfront Path. Local rides have been in Panther Trace in Riverview, in Ruskin, in Apollo Beach, and even right here on the streets of Valencia Lakes. Enough members have bike racks, trucks, or SUV’s available to transport everyone’s bike to the riding site. If you are interested in joining some friendly folks for good exercise and fresh air, bring your bicycle to the clubhouse parking lot at 9:30 am to spend a few hours with us. For more details, contact John Doellinger at 813.938.1029 or [email protected]. Dining In Calling All Bridge Players This club meets every other month in neighbors’ homes. Community Club By definition, the Community Club has the largest membership of any club at Valencia Lakes, for all residents are automatically members of it. The purpose of the club is to facilitate discussions about matters of interest to our residents. Speakers have come to talk about health and safety issues, facilities issues, and political issues. In the future, as we get closer to the time that GL will turn over the HOA to active resident control, we anticipate that this club will bring in speakers to tell us how other sub-developments have gone through the transition process and all the things that we need to be cognizant of during that period. The club meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM in the social hall. All residents are encouraged to come to our meetings.
