Watch our Facebook page for the links to the virtual meet-ups. Here is what you need to write to be entered into the drawing at the Family Night Out on November 30: PreK-Kindergarten - 25 page picture book (doesn’t need words) 1st grade - 25 page picture book (10 words per page) 2nd grade - 30 page picture book (25 words per page) 3rd-4th grade - 5 page hand written story 5th-6th grade - 10 page hand written story 7-9th grade - 5 pages typed, single space 10-12 - 10 pages typed, single space Adults - 25 pages typed, single space NOTE: Email us at [email protected] so we can add you to our google doc and you can keep us updated on your word count. 4-H Friday Family Night - A Night of Service For all 4-H youth and families and ANYONE interested in learning more about 4-H At the Utah County 4-H Office - 100 E. Center, Provo FREE—November 6 from 6-8 pm Come learn more about how service can help towards scholarships! Dinner will be provided We will be doing a service project There will be adult and youth workshop tracks Workshops will include things like “service projects for all ages” and “community service and leadership opportunities through 4-H” and “new leader training” Bring hygiene items or a bag of wrapped candy for our service project Invite your friends! We will have activities for the entire family. Worth 1 4-H Achievement point. 3 Youth Leadership Teen Council & Junior Ambassadors —All youth grades 7-12 - Free November 23, December 7 from 4:30 to 5:30 pm At the 4-H office, 100 E. Center St. Suite L900 in Provo Check out this site for more information All youth grades 7-12 are invited to join us! We would love every youth in Utah county to come. Bring a friend and come learn leadership skills, plan activities, build friendships, and have fun! We meet every month. Every meeting is worth 1 4-H Achievement Point. ***NEW this year for parents and younger siblings of youth on teen council Join us during teen council for fun activities! We will be playing with the Sphero robots, the Keva planks, cameras, etc. We will meet at the 4-H office during the same time as the teen councils. Bring your kids and have some fun! American Youth Leadership Program Ages 15-17 as of July 1, 2016 - Application due: December 1, 2015. Program dates: June-July 2016 The American Youth Leadership Program (AYLP) with Ghana will offer 20 youth and 2 adults the opportunity to explore the vast historical and cultural traditions of Ghana. The program will include a pre-trip orientation, four week cultural trip to Ghana in July 2015 and a follow-on project that will be carried out in each participant’s local community following the exchange trip. The educational theme for AYLP with Ghana will focus on nutrition and food security issues with educational activities concentrating on how marketing affects decision making, sustainable food production, and food security for school children. Check out the Wyoming 4-H website for the application. State Ambassador Application Due — Due December 1 Youth ages 16-19 (not in college) are invited to apply to be a Utah State Ambassador for 4-H. This is a great leadership opportunity for all youth. Please, check out the Utah State website for more information or talk to Jolene at 801-851-8473. Teen Council Expansion and Review January 25 from 4:30 to 6 pm - All youth grades 9-12 Free at the Pizza Pie Cafe - 2235 N. University Parkway in Provo All youth on the teen council, livestock ambassadors, county ambassadors, horse ambassadors, Leader’s Council and 4-H Staff are invited to join us for our Expansion and Review night. We hold this event once a year to review our program and discuss ways to help it grow. Pizza Pie Cafe will provide dinner and dessert. It is an all-you-can-eat restaurant, so come hungry! Worth 1 4-H Achievement point. 4-H Teen Winter Retreat — Theme: “Relationship Playlist” Youth grades 9-12 throughout the state Cost is $55, but the first 30 teens who register will only pay $10! January 29-30—at Aspen Grove camp—9521 Alpine Scenic Hwy, Provo, Utah Youth who have never attended a teen winter retreat are in for a fun time! This fun retreat is planned by our state ambassadors. We will have a dance, food, communication workshops and so much fun! Youth can choose to cross-county ski or snowshoe. Youth will need to provide your own transportation. Arrival time is at 4 pm on Friday. Pick up times on Saturday will be announced with it is closer to the event. Registration is limited, so registered today. See you there! Worth 1 4-H Achievement point. 4 4-H Camps, Retreats & Activities Re-Enrollment started October 1 All 4-H youth and families - Online at http://ut.4honline.com Here is a link to walk you through the enrollment website. Each family profile will change to inactive on October 1. Please reactivate your account and update your profile before submitting. When you are finished updating, call the office at 801-851-8470 to pay the annual $5 per child registration fee. You will be unable to register for any camps or events after October 1 until you reactivate your account. 4-H Holiday Food Drive November 1 to 20 Please help us by donating to our Thanksgiving Food Drive for local families in need. Simply bring your items to Achievement Night on November 16 or to the 4-H office anytime. We are in need of frozen rolls, frozen pie crust, pumpkin pie mix, stuffing mix, canned veggies, gravy packets, canned yams, Jell-o mix, cranberry sauce and potatoes. Thank you for helping out families in need this holiday season! Outdoor Adventure Club Suggested age -7 to 12 grades. Younger siblings are welcome with their parents. Meeting on November 7 from 9:30—noon Wilderness first aid survival At the Utah County 4-H Office—100 E. Center St. L400 in Provo, Utah Meeting on January 9 from 9:30—noon Indoor Climbing - Place and cost TBD Join us for our county-wide outdoor adventure club. This will be geared for youth grades 7-12. If younger siblings would like to participate, they MUST have their parents come with them to the meetings and activities. Each meeting is worth 1 4-H Achievement point. Healthy Cuisine contest All youth grades 3-12—At Oak Canyon Jr. High— 111 S. 725 E. In Lindon November 12—Pick a time Register online at: http://ut.4honline.com You can do this contest by yourself, or grab a friend and compete together. Prepare a quick, nutritious meal in 45 minutes with an additional 15 minutes for cleanup. (One hour total.) You are encouraged to include something from each of the 4 food groups in your healthy meal. Contestants will be judged on simplicity, appeal, nutrition, and proper food safety. Livestock Social—All youth and leaders in livestock November 12 from 6-8 pm At the Utah County 4-H Office—100 E. Center St. L400 in Provo, Utah Come join us for our Livestock Social! Come meet others in 4-H and FFA who do livestock. We will have snacks and activities for everyone . Worth 1 4-H Achievement point. 5 More Activities 4-H Achievement Night – All youth and families November 16 from 6:30-8 pm At the Utah County 4-H Office—100 E. Center St. L400 in Provo, Utah We hold Achievement Night once a year to recognize youth achievements in Leadership, Contests, Horse, Livestock, Afterschool and Demonstrations. Youth, parents, volunteers, and leaders are invited to come. Casual dress. Come support the youth in your club, and our county! Items for our Holiday Food Drive will be accepted at Achievement Night. Refreshments will be served. Worth 1 4-H Achievement point. Pie Making camp—Grades 3-12 or leaders - Cost $7 November 20 from 5-7:30 pm At the Utah County 4-H Office—100 E. Center St. L400 in Provo, Utah Love homemade pie? Do you want to learn how to make it? At this fun camp, you will be making 3 small homemade pies just in time for Thanksgiving. Youth grades 3-12 are invited to attend, as well as any leaders who might be interested in learning to make pies. Thanks to our wonderful volunteer leaders who are running this camp. Younger youth are required to attend with an adult. Worth 1 4-H Achievement point. Register online at http://ut.4honline.com Youth in Action Awards Youth ages 16-21—Due on November 30 by noon ET The Youth in Action Award is one of the highest honors a 4-H member can achieve. This will be given to those who have gained critical life skills through 4-H and made an impact on their community. Winners will be presented their award in April, 2016. And, they will receive a $5000 scholarship for college. Worth 1 4-H Achievement point. Register online at the National 4-H website. STEAM Punk Camp—(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) December 5 for Grades 5-8 - Cost: $25, with $10 off for the first 5 who register At the Utah County 4-H Office—100 E. Center St. L400 in Provo, Utah This fun camp is for anyone who likes science and arts and would like combine the two. Parents who wish to join the adventure are invited to attend for $5. Snacks and lunch will be provided. Step into the world of Jules Vern when it was hard to imagine someone being able to travel the world in 80, but you could build a giant cannon and launch to the moon. Build a real hot air balloon, kraken bottle, rocket pack and aviator goggles! And so much more! Youth will not want to miss out on this fun camp!!! Worth 1 4-H Achievement point. 6 More Activities Hack-A-Thon—All 4-H K-12 and leaders—December 12 At the Provo Library - 550 North University Avenue in Provo Wear your 4-H t-shirt and join us for a day of computer programing! This is in conjunction with a national program called “Hour of Code.” You are welcome to bring your own laptop, or we will have some available for use. We will be teaching youth how to code and leaders how to run a coding club. Watch your email for registration. This is open to everyone in the county, and registration will fill up quickly! Worth 1 4-H Achievement point. STEM Storm Jr.—Grades 3-6 and leaders—January 28 Location TBA - Cost is $5 per child One adult can come for free with your child, or it is $5 per adult If you are interested in creating an awesome science fair project, then you need to come to this activity! This activity will help you get ideas for projects, and help you plan your computer programing and engineering projects. During the evening you will: Create an idea for a project Do research to create a practical project Determine questions you need to answer Write a hypothesis Leave with a designed pilot project Dinner will be provided Worth 1 4-H Achievement point. Register online by January 21 at http://ut.4honline.com World of Work contest All youth grades 3-12—Jolene’s home - 585 West 10 North, Lindon January 27—Pick a time Register online at: http://ut.4honline.com In this fun contest, you pretend you are applying for a job. You submit an application and do an interview, just like in the real world. You need to come prepared with a resume, job application, and job description. The goal of this contest is to prepare you to actually apply for the job. All information should be factual. You will be judged on things like how nice the forms look, your appearance, your non-verbal communication and your interview. Click here for the World of Work contest Guidelines and Score Sheet. Worth 2 4-H Achievement Points. 7 Leader’s Corner (Parents and Volunteers) 4-H Leaders Learning Workshops Free for leaders of all experience levels Each will be held at the Utah County 4-H Office—100 E. Center St. Suite L400, Provo These free courses are open to all club leaders, parents, volunteers, afterschool leaders, teachers, and youth leaders 9-12 grade. If you are looking for a 4-H project for your club, these workshops are perfect for you! We welcome all experience levels to each workshop. FREE upcoming workshops: November 12—6-7:30 pm ”Use the Science Fair as a 4H Project” —Leaders will learn how to make any science fair project a 4-H project. If your child needs a project idea, At the 4-H office. Registration required. December 12—“Teaching Coding in the Club and in the Classroom” — Bring your kids to the Hack-a-Thon, and learn how to code facilitate a coding club! No coding experience is necessary. Time will be in the next newsletter. Held at the Provo City Library. Registration required. Watch for an email with the registration. January 21—6-7:30 pm “ Chasing STEM Scholarships and Other Opportunities” — Open to all teen leaders, adult leaders, parents, after school instructors, teachers, and volunteers. Come learn about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Scholarships and other STEM opportunities for your youth! Discover 4-H Leaders training Free for leaders of all experience levels Each will be held at the Utah County 4-H Office—100 E. Center St. Suite L400, Provo Discover more about 4-H at these day-time trainings! These hands on workshops will train you how to run a 4-H club and give you ideas of simple clubs you can start today! These free courses are open to all club leaders, parents, and volunteers. Children are always welcome. November 17—11:30 am to 1 pm - “Discover 4-H: Paper Crafts” —Discover more about 4-H with other 4-H leaders. We will be making a paper journal and designing Christmas cards. (Card will not look like the one pictured.) Bring something to share for lunch. December 9—11:30 am to 1 pm - “Discover 4-H: Spa Day” — Take a minute from your busy holiday schedule to come relax with other 4-H leaders. We will be teaching you how to run a spa 4-H club and you will be making things like bath salts to bring home. November 13 & 14: Sewing Conference at Thanksgiving Point—from 8-5 pm—Cost: $85 for 2 days or $50 for 1 This great conference is held every year. There will be classes for both beginners and advanced sewers. They have a limited number of available enrollments. Register today at the Thanksgiving Point website. It will include: Introduction to 4-H and resources available Explanation of camps, trips, contests, awards, activities and registration Important dates and deadlines Dessert, door prizes and fun! Leadermete—Youth grades 6-12 and all adults (leaders, parents, etc.) Leadermete will be held April 7-9 in Richfield, Utah Every year, 4-H leaders, volunteers, parents and youth (grades 6-12) from around the state get together for this fun annual training. March 2-4, 2016 Every year, 4-H leaders from the west meet for awesome training and next year it will be in Alaska! You will be going to workshops, doing activities, learning about 4-H, meeting other leaders, and having fun! Leaders are encouraged to attend! You will get ideas for things like how to run a club and topics for clubs. Some of our Utah County 4H staff are teaching classes!
