2013 Dining Trends
2013
With more homes moving to one central eating area, we’ll
see more crossover looks this year… dining sets dressy
enough for company, but casual enough for everyday.
Look for more higher-height casual tables and bar stools
in 2013; they’re as popular as ever, especially with clever
details like built-in wine storage!
If taking down your holiday décor exposed a drab
room - and you’ve since added home improvement
to your New Year’s resolution list… this issue is for
you!
If your resolutions already included sprucing up
your home - maybe with a home theater setup, a
hotel-inspired bedroom makeover, a chic bar-height
dining table... or just a small update to a room that
hasn’t seen an update since last century… this issue is for you!
More buffet-style eating and less formal china in our lives
is making servers—or cabinets with an open counter—
special stars.
Finally, look for a range of styles… from modern looks that
work with clean white or chic dark kitchen cabinets… to
chunkier, narrower tables that feel communal… to rich
traditional looks in deep burnished finishes.
Or maybe you’re furnishing your first apartment,
buying a new home or downsizing? Guess what?
This issue is for you!
Our January TrendWatch is dedicated to your
home—and to the things you’re putting in it. On
each page, check out What’s Now… these are
some of the most popular, up-trending furnishings
in our stores, and the styles and colors we expect
will stay strong in 2013.
And we’ve got more coming your way. Check out
What’s New, too… these are this year’s upcoming
furniture trends; the ones you’ll see in our windows
- and maybe we’ll see in yours!
So here it is...the first look at Home 2013.
old world elegance
An opulent finish and exquisite details are always a hit,
and North Shore’s as grand, elegant - and popular as a
dining room comes! Decorative pilasters and ornate

urban chic
Is it the rich dark espresso finish… the crackled-glass
insert... or the chic two-tone chairs that make our
Ocean Park set so popular? You decide!
classic meets contemporary
What do you get when you mix dark wood, stylish
contours, antique nickel-style hardware, a storage
gathering table and a store-and-serve cabinet?
You get Hayley; a popular mix of classic and
contemporary... timeless and high-function!

It’s tough to find a counter- or bar-height table that’s
not popular these days, but Theo, with its thick

leather-like stools, is a particular favorite!

hibernation chairs
Wrapping our living rooms in comfort is getting
easier than ever, and sectionals (two-sided and
three-sided) are the hottest stars.
Calling all couch potatoes!
You may want to switch to
a chair this year. With plush
arms, headrest and chaisestyle footrest… our Dylan
DuraBlend® (Onyx) rocker
recliner is certainly getting
your attention.
These comfy, crowd-pleasing pieces suit our
growing casual approach to living rooms and
family-rooms. Look for other trends that relax
design rules, such as vintage-casual looks,
fewer matched sets (and more accent chairs!)
and linen-like fabrics. Expect more transitional
looks, too (not categorized into a particular
style), alongside some modern ones!
Comfort is king as we settle in with our
flat-screen TVs. Power-operated reclining
mechanisms, deeper seated sofas and
affordable home theater setups will all trend
upward!
traditional details
Supple two-toned leather, box stitching, three-leg front,
rolled arms and fringed-tapestry pillows… Axiom (Walnut)
style offers the kind of tradition you can live with.
pillow backs
high-leg recliners
A scatter-back-pillow sofa is always stylish. But
with Darcy (Sage), it’s tidy and supportive, too, with
pillows partly attached to the frame. A top pick!
Our ever-popular Santa
Fe recliner offers a rustic
Mission flavor and a
leather-like seat.

theater seating
Reclining two-seaters with storage and cup holders
are a hot home theater trend, and the faux-leather
Hawkeye (Dune) is one of your favorites!

Gray and blue are hot in 2013,
and Yvette (Steel) is hitting
home for its cool blend of the
two! Its nearly-neutral-but-notneutral hue (is it gray or is it
blue?) marries a modern sofa
style with lively pillows
room-sized sectionals
They create a room… and invite a crowd! Our
popular Grenada (Mocha) sectional, with its
army of pillows, chaise-lounge end, and variety of
configurations fuse style, flexibility and comfort.

won’t be getting up any time soon!

old world
Bedrooms may be hidden at the back of
the house… but bedroom renovations will
take center stage this year as we resolve
to get more sleep!
Grand, traditional designs in the
bedroom evoke a love of Tuscan
villas and old world European
elegance. And your hands-down
favorite is our North Shore
collection. Its exquisitely opulent
pilasters, ornate details, serpentine
shapes (… even inlaid stone veneer
tops on some pieces), create an
enviably elegant ambiance.
The growing casual trend is alive and well
here too, with traditional and nostalgic
rustic references mixing with a love of
de-cluttered, urban-style simplicity.
Upholstered beds that don’t match the
case pieces will add to this casual,
relaxed look.
King-sized beds will stay popular— helping
us replicate the deluxe hotel experience!
So will TVs; they’re in our bedrooms to
stay… so look for TV-friendly bedroom
furniture! Finally, look for more white—not
just in coastal cottage bedroom styles, but
in sleek, modern ones, too.
vacation style
Who wouldn’t want to be on safari in Kenya
or relaxing somewhere in the British West
Indies? Gauging by the popularity of Key
Town, not many! This popular bedroom mixes
traditional British furniture details (turned legs,
pilasters) with exotic details (a dark finish,
craft-like carvings, a shutter-style bed and even
an animal-print bench!)… the perfect mix for
those who love tradition... and trips.

rustic reinvented
Burnished woods, bronzy hardware, bun feet and clever storage
pieces… the popularity of our
Porter collection tells us you’re
looking for rustic looks that work
anywhere. In fact, we’ve crowned
this very popular bedroom the
new look of country style… rustic,
but simple, and versatile enough
for urban or rural homes.

coastal cottage in the city
There’s no question. More and
more of you are embracing your
love of coastal cottage style without
sacrificing your city sophistication.
We see it in two of your favorite styles:
Prentice... a streamlined coastal,
light-enhancing white bedroom... and
Greensburg, a streamlined cottage,
mood-enhancing black bedroom. With
stylish satin-nickel-colored pulls, these
looks mix rustic-relaxed with city-chic.

finishing touches
2013 Accent Trends
Accessories are the easiest way to add personality
to our homes… and we’re adding more and more
of them!
With solid-colored upholstery staying strong this
year, expect accents to be popular, exciting and
more affordable than ever. Look for spicier colors,
more intriguing patterns and more hand-crafted
textures.
Accents in 2013 will suggest a variety of influences;
drawing on modern themes (think playful patterns
from the 1960s), global themes (think exotic finds
at a market in Morocco), old world themes (think
oxblood-accented area rugs), vintage-casual
themes (think distressed antiques from a Paris
flea market), and couture themes (think shapely
lamps bases with dressy shades)!
what’s
oxblood
now!
It’s a brownish red—and
it’s one of today’s hottest
runway colors. It’s also
made our Prism (above,
left) Rosemont (above,
right) area rugs… and our
Jemma (left) ceramic
lamp your favorites.
architectural modern
What’s the easiest way to
make a room look more
modern? Just add silver,
brushed-nickel or chrome
accents! A chrome lamp
with a straight-lined drum
shade - like our top-selling
Maisie (above) - looks
understated, hip and
youthful.

boxy shapes
Stacked or clustered, squares and rectangles feel simple and
modern. Our top-selling Deidra lamp contrasts a stackedrectangular base with a rectangular shade. A square quilted
shape adds life to our Gridlock Thistle linens.

Patterns that look painted by a
modern artist add a youthful,
modern vibe to solid-colored
sofas. Calder Multi rug (above,
