Sad News
I have been meaning to put this obituary in the Pitkin Miner in case some
readers may remember Mrs. Rivera. This appeared in the Gunnison Country
Times in the January 22, 2015, issue.
JULIA M. RIVERA
Julia M. Rivera passed away on Jan. 17. She was born in Pitkin on Sept. 7,
1930. Julia married Trinidad Rivera, who preceded her in death in 2003. Also
preceding her in death were her two daughters Lugardita Juanita Eldred and
Mary Rivera. She is survived by numerous brothers and sister and her only
surviving daughter, SueAnn Yolanda Rivera of Gunnison. She is also survived
by four grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Julia lived in Pitkin for
many years and then moved to Gunnison, which she made her permanent
home. Julia always liked to invite you into her home. If you went to her house
you always knew there would be sweets waiting for you. Many times you could
walk into her house and hear her Spanish music in the air. Julia is at rest. She
is no longer suffering and is with family and her best friend of many years
Regina Gomez. Services will be held on January 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Peters
Catholic Church. Julia will be laid to rest with her beloved husband in Grand
Junction at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado. You will be
missed more than words could ever say. Rest in Peace and Go with God.
MORE SAD NEWS
Also, Greg Weihs did a lot of electrical installations and upgrades around Pitkin
over the years. I know he worked on our home when it was originally built in
1992-1993, and he did more work for us later on when we needed things to be
done. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye that I’ll
never forget. Please keep his wife Patty and his father, Herbert, in your
thoughts and prayers.

GREGORY LEE WEIHS
Gregory Lee Weihs passed away on Jan. 25 in the University of Colorado
Hospital, after complication with a rare disease. He fought a valiant fight. Greg
was born in Spokane Washington on Dec. 6, 1953, to Herbert Luther Weihs
and Lois Jean (Rail) Weihs. The family moved shortly after his birth to
Anaheim, Calif., where he at tend Benjamin Franklin Grade School, Fremont
Junior High and Anaheim High. He was known affectionately as Smokey, a
nickname his father gave him at birth. He enjoyed sports and was a natural at
Little League Baseball, and one summer his team went to regional finals. He
played some football, as well. He join the Army in April of 1971 and enlisted for
three years. He joined the Army during the Vietnam Campaign, however he was
diverted to Korea. While he was in the Army he served in the 77th Armor
Division and was also a wheeled vehicle and track mechanic. While in the
Service he was stationed in Fort Carson, where he discovered Colorado. Then
he discovered the Western Slope of Colorado. He moved to Gunnison in the fall
of 1979. Shortly after moving to Gunnison he met the girl of his dreams and fell
in love with Gunnisonite, Patty Jean Guerrieri. It was love at first sight and
they married on Sept. 27, 1980. They got married at the Gunnison City Park
up Taylor Canyon, a park Patty’s father Ernest (Sweed) Guerrieri helped build.
Greg was a devoted husband and his purpose in life was his Patty. After the
Army Greg worked for a while as a body and fender technician. When he moved
to Gunnison he was hired on as a laborer on a construction site. His boss
introduced him to Jim Bowen of Mountaineer Electric, and shortly thereafter
that hestar ted his shocking career as an electrician. He traveled for work to
keep his apprenticeship alive. In 1987 he started the business Alpine Electric
and also did work under the name Greg Weihs Elecric LLC. He achieved all
electrical licenses and was a licensed journeyman, master and contractor. He
was very proud of those achievement and worked with some very fine
craftsman. He loved the fellowship of his electrical community. He was very
well-respected in his trade and was requested by contractors. He loved working
on log homes and seeing the end result. His hobbies included antiquing, and
Greg was a vintage car buff. He enjoyed traveling with his bride and seeing
various locations. He was blessed to take his father to see the World War II
Memorial in Washington, D.C., and they traveled to the 65th anniversary of the
Battle of Peleliu in September of ‘09. He is proceeded in death by his
grandparents Cecil and Viola Rail of Anaheim, Calif.; Herb and Carrie Weihs of
Garden City Park, Long Island, N.Y.; his mother Lois Jean (Rail) Weihs; one
niece, Amanda Jean Weihs of Anaheim; and his father-inlaw Ernest (Swede)
Guerrieri. He is survived by his father Herbert Luther Weihs “Pops” and his
loving wife Patty J. Weihs; his brother Herbert Luther (Tina) Weihs II; his
daughter Crystal Faye Martin (Weihs), and Crystal’s mother Deborah NilssonWeihs. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Marel Lee Guerrieri; his
brother-in-law David (Cindy) Guerrieri and David’s children Bobbie, Jackie ,
Jeremy (Danika) and Monica (John) Coleman; his sister-inlaw June (Dave)
Martinez and their children Buck (Jennifer) Kolz, Jody (Beth) Kolz, Beth Ann
(Kolz) Coombs , Michael (Heather) Martinez and Samuel; his sister-fromanother-mother and Patty’s BFF Kay (Sebring) Hicks; not to mention numerous
great nieces and nephews, along with Bruce and Debbie Hoffman’s girls Sarah,
Leah, Eliza and Sophie. He was also proceeded in death by his fur babies and
Labrador retrievers Chandler, Brandy and Sandy; and survived by Lacey,
Smokey and Ruby. He was devoted to them and they to him. He had a very
strong work ethic and was compassionate about his opinions and beliefs. He
was proud to be an American and loved Gunnison passionately. He had a zest
for life a wonderful sense of humor. He was a great friend and was always there
helping people and worthy causes of his community. He will be missed by his
dear friends and family. We would like to quote a Van Zant line: “If you believe
in something no matter what / ‘Cause, it’s better to be hated for who you are /
Than be loved for who you’re not.” The family is planning a celebration of
Greg’s life at a later date, possibly Memorial Day, to be announced.

Update on the Pearsons
Gary and Jan Pearson, longtime former residents of Pitkin, are now living in
Swink, Colorado, which is not far from their son Herb and his wife Tina, who
live in La Junta. Gary went to a neurologist in Denver last week to be
thoroughly checked out and the doctor gave a good report but said that it will
still take some time before Gary is free of symptoms from his concussion. He
will be okay in time.
Jan is feeling much better now and is in good spirits, and the two of them are
taking good care of each other. If you would like to send them a note of

New Service Business in Gunnison Area
Many may know Linda Brothers, who was a hygienist for Gentle Dental dentist
in Gunnison and later had her own business as a hygienist in Gunnison. Linda
wrote the following email to friends in the Gunnison area to let them know of
the service business she is now involved in, called Visiting Angels. I mention it
here because there may be some in the Pitkin area who may need this type of
service now or in the future.
Linda wrote:
You may know already that I am back in town (very happily) and opening a
branch office of Visiting Angels here, but you may not know what that entails.
After I left Gunnison 6 years ago, I traveled for several years, then ended up in
Pagosa Springs where I have some good friends. I ended up going to work for the
Visiting Angels office there doing living assistance care. I cannot say enough
good things about that franchise owned by Chris and Michelle Smith. Visiting
Angels is a nationwide company made up of individually run franchises. Chris
and Michelle have branched out to Alamosa, Creede, Durango, Cortez, Telluride
and now here.
We provide non-medical assistance to anyone from 18-90+ who need help in
their home. In Pagosa we worked with many Ute elders in the Southern Ute
Tribe, which was fascinating. Some of the varied types of clients include the
elderly, physically handicapped, veterans, the dying (working with Hospice as
well), and many who suffer from Altziemers and dementia. We also provide
respite care for the loved ones who are caregivers.
Some of the services we can provide are cooking, cleaning, transportation,
assistance with bathing, dressing, personal care, and in general anything that
will improve the quality of their life. Our mission statement is:
At Visiting Angels we aim to brighten the home and better the health of our dear
clients as we joyfully assist with the activities of daily living. When life at home
becomes challenging, we provide real peace of mind by meeting real needs.
We take this very seriously and I think that is what sets us apart from many of
the homecare providers. Our caregivers go through a rigorous hiring process
where we do background checks and drug testing. Michelle says we hire them
for their smile, but they are carefully screened as well.
We are private pay and do accept insurance (mostly long-care) but not Medicare
and Medicaid. There is a company called Touch of Care here that handle these.
There is a three hour/day minimum and we try for at least nine hours a week.
Many times that is enough to keep our clients happily living at home instead in a
nursing home or assisted living. With so many strong and independent people
here in the valley, this can really meet a need.
I hope to see you all one of these days, I have been working on my house which
was rented for six years and a mess, and am so happy to be back. If you know

Pearson Family Pitkin History
Shirley Ewing, Gary Pearson’s sister, sent me the following information
because I write the Pitkin Phone Book and I’m going to try to add some of this
information into the phone book history section for the 2015 Pitkin Phone
Book.
Shirley wrote:
The Pearson Family were some of the early Pitkin Pioneers. John Franklin
Pearson was a Gunnison County Commissioner from 1887-89, then elected to the
State Legislature from Gunnison Co.; then elected Senator for two terms from the
11th District. He became Mayor of Pitkin in 1891, serving until 1897. His picture
can be seen in the Pitkin School House (now the Pitkin Museum).
Senator Pearson's son, Arthur Leonidas, “Art,” or “Pop,” was born and raised in
Pitkin. He was involved in the mining and timber business. From 1911-16, he
was a Pitkin Town Trustee, then Mayor for most of 37 years. Pop's grandson,
Gary Dean Pearson, became Mayor in 1980/81, then again from 2000 through
2006. He bought Grandpa Pop's house and lived in it for 33 years, working in
real estate and for Zondervan Publishing Co.
William Paul “Bill” Bickley, Gary's nephew, served as Mayor for the 1992/93
term. Others of the Pearson family can be seen in Pitkin during the summers: Tim
and Linda Bickley (Bill's brother), and Glenn and Shirley Ewing (Bill and Tim's
mom, great-granddaughter of John F. Pearson) both spend time in Pitkin in their
cabins in Pitkin.

Cheyenne Dyess, age 10, just diagnosed with cancer
Amy and Levi Dyess of Colorado Springs are Quartz Creek Properties owners
who love to come to Pitkin. Just a few days ago, their daughter Cheyenne was
diagnosed with cancer. Please read this post, by Amy Dyess, from Facebook to
get the background.
“This morning, Cheyenne woke up and was having a hard time breathing so she
was taken to the ER...from there the day has been a whirlwind. She got to ride in
a helicopter for the first time to Children's Hospital in Denver - which she was
very excited about!! And found out she has what they think is a form of
aggressive lymphoma called Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. She had a biopsy today,
but because the tumor in her chest is so large and restricting her airway so bad,
she didn't get anesthesia. She's such a trooper! Right now, she's sleeping calmly
in the Pediatric ICU at Children's Hospital while we wait to hear from the doctor's
what the next step of her treatment journey will be. Please send her LOTS of
happy thoughts and prayers. She's already had lots of visitors and hugs and will
need lots more in the coming weeks.”

I was looking for a recipe in the new (Summer 2014) PVFD Pitkin cookbook and
saw that Cheyenne, who was only 9 years old at the time I was putting together
the cookbook, has three of her recipes in the cookbook!

Beginning this afternoon at 4:00 p.m., residents and friends will gather at the
Newcomb Community Center for “Let’s Worship Together!” See details above! It
should be a fun time for everyone!
Zoning Meeting News
The Zoning Meeting held on Thursday night, January 22, was attended by 31
people. Only a few people could remember the Town Hall downstairs Meeting
Room being that full at ANY Town Meeting or Zoning Meeting in the past. A few
people who have lived here over 20 years could remember larger crowds. A
variance request was not presented but lots of information was gathered. The
Zoning Board did have two other pieces of business to attend to: approval of
the official zoning map for the Town of Pitkin and discussion of trying to find a
fifth member to the Zoning Board.
The main topic discussed was the short-term rental of property that is located
in residentially zoned areas of town.
Ladies’ Night Out
Last night 17 women from the Quartz Creek Valley gathered at the Blackstock
Bistro in Gunnison at 5:30 for Ladies’ Night Out! We have been getting together
once a month since October 2014 and we usually have good attendance. It’s a
great way for us to get together and chat. We have a favorite waiter by now and
he is very patient with us! There were 14 ladies from Pitkin and 3 from further
down the valley!
Busy, Cold Days in Pitkin
The Quartz Creek Company has been busy working on a new home on State
Street above 10th Street. Todd McCrery, Phil Duetsch, and others have been
hard at work and here’s a photo of their progress as of yesterday! The high was
about 22 in Pitkin yesterday, the low was -7 at my house. But bright sunny
blue skies!

A Little Short on Snowfall
We have had nice sunny days now for quite a while and only small amounts of
snow. So I know that many people are anxious for more snow to fall. We do still
have good snow cover, but we need more. Hopefully February and March will
bring us more snow.

ZONING MEETING TONIGHT
A Zoning Board Meeting tonight will consider a request for a variance in which
a residentially zoned home owner requests permission to rent out a house by
the week or by the night (for less than 30 days, which would be allowed
without a variance). The meeting will be held at the Pitkin Town Hall at 6:30
p.m. tonight, January 22, 2015. Notice has been posted about this meeting.

PEARSONS GOING THROUGH A TOUGH TIME
Gary and Jan Pearson, who lived in Pitkin from July 7, 1977, until sometime in
the summer of 2010, have been going through some rough times. Originally
they moved to Westcliffe, Colorado, where Gary managed a local grocery store
for a couple of years. Then they moved to La Junta to be closer to their son
Herb and his wife Tina and their daughters. Jan and Gary managed a storage
facility in La Junta. In the Winter of 2014, they moved to Cheyenne Wells,
Colorado, where Gary took a job managing a grocery store.
In the Spring of 2014, Jan was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer and has
spent the past 9 months having chemotherapy, had surgery this past Fall, and
most recently a round of radiation treatments. Jan is doing well and her
prognosis is good.
Back in the Fall, Gary was at work at the grocery store and he suffered a bad
fall. He got a bad concussion and was otherwise injured as well, but the worst
was the injury to his head. He has still not been released from doctor’s care
and he has not been able to work for many weeks.
This past Thursday Jan’s radiation therapy was finished up and the couple
returned to Cheyenne Wells. Unfortunately, Jan is very tired, has some painful
blisters from the radiation therapy, and Gary is still not healed from his
concussion. And sadly, in the past 36 hours, they have had further problems.
On Friday, the owner of the grocery store where Gary still holds a job, who is
also the owner of the house that the Pearsons have been living in since last
Spring, evicted them and told them that they need to be out by today.
Without receiving any salary whatsoever for many weeks, and with the
expenses of taking Jan to Denver for radiation treatments, the Pearsons are in
need of some help. I am asking readers to please send Gary & Jan Pearson
notes or cards, and if so inclined, a check that might help them through this
difficult time. Their son Herb and daughter Tracy and their families are helping
Gary and Jan move out of the house in Cheyenne Wells today. Gary has an
appointment with a neurologist at Swedish Hospital in two weeks as he is still
having bad headaches and he knows he isn’t quite right. His doctor agrees – he
has not been released from doctor’s care. Please keep both Gary and Jan in
your prayers.

Ohio City Fire Department with their equipment. We will be training about
drafting from under the ice. Pitkin's Firemen will go to Ohio City in private
vehicles. It requested that they meet at our firehouse 11:30 get their turn-out
gear and leave together.

Sad News – On December 21, 2014, Art Clauter, longtime Pitkin summer
resident and the father of Lucinda Lull, longtime year-round resident, passed
away in Geneva, Illinois. Hazel Clauter’s address is 1001 Meadows Rd.,
Geneva, IL 60134. Lucinda and Rodger are there now and are not sure when
they’ll be returning to Pitkin. The following is Art Clauter’s obituary.
Arthur J. Clauter Jr., age 96 of Geneva passed away peacefully on December 21, 2014 with his family by
his side. He was born on February 13, 1918, the oldest child of Arthur and Rose Clauter of Chicago, IL.
Arthur graduated from Morgan Park H.S. in 1935 and continued his education at The University of
Chicago, earning his B.S. in Business in 1939, where he met his wife Hazel. He completed his Masters
Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Statistics from Northwestern University.
Following school, he started working for the William Wrigley Jr. Company. Arthur left his employment
to serve in the Army during WWII. Upon his return to Chicago, he resumed his career with Wrigley’s for
a total of 44 years, retiring in 1983 as Vice President of Sales. He and his wife Hazel travelled
throughout much of the United States and Europe, but had a special love for their beloved “Chalet” on top
of Islet Mountain near Pitkin, Colorado.
Arthur’s hobbies included every aspect of trains; from building model trains, to steam locomotives and
was a Trolley Car operator. Other interests included photography, The Boy Scouts of America and his
children and grandchildren. As a youth, he attained the rank of an Eagle Scout in October, 1931 while
with troop 608 in Chicago. As an adult, he received the Silver Beaver Award for his lifelong dedication
to scouting leadership. Under his direction he guided Troop 37 and always kept his passion for scouting
and youth.
He was an active member of The Geneva United Methodist Church, Pioneer Sholes School at LeRoy
Oaks Forest Preserve, Geneva Historical Society, Preservation Partners, as well as many other local civic
organizations and boards.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years; Hazel (Lindquist), sons Dean Clauter of Melbourne, FL., Bruce
(LaRue) Clauter of Bexley, OH., daughter Lucinda (Rodger) Clauter-Lull of Pitkin, CO., six
grandchildren; Arthur and Peter Clauter of Melbourne, FL., Jody Clauter of Laramie, WY., Andrea
(Amber) Clauter of Columbus, OH., Sarah (Roby) Lull-Castillo of Tallassee, FL., Jacob Lull of Pitkin,
CO., several nieces and nephews and two great-great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Clauter.
A memorial visitation is planned for Saturday, January 17, 2014 from 10:30 to 11:00 AM at Geneva
United Methodist Church, 211 Hamilton St., Geneva, IL. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM.
Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Geneva, IL. Contributions may be made to: The Boy Scouts of
America – Three Fires Council, The Geneva United Methodist Church, Pioneer Scholes School or a
charity of the donor’s choice.

Hazel and Art Clauter. Hazel will be moving into a group home where friends and
neighbors will be able to visit her easily. Art passed away on December 21, 2014.

The Quartz Creek Improvement Association’s January meeting and Pot Luck Dinner
will be held this coming Saturday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the Ohio City School
House.

I was not able to attend because of a large family gathering here at my home, but I
heard that the New Year’s Eve Party at the Newcomb Community Center on December
31, 2014, was a lot of fun!

Volunteer Fire Department, arrived here in Pitkin yesterday! The cookbooks are
on sale at the Silver Plume General Store, the High Mountain Gallery, and the
Pitkin Café. Suzy Metzler will be handling the mailing of cookbooks to those
who are not able to come to Pitkin this fall.
If you would like to buy a single cookbook and have it mailed to you,

cookbook out to you. The price breakdown of the $20 is $14 for the cookbook
