Shirley Merlington named 2015 Grand Marshal The Red Flannel Festival Board of Directors proudly named Cedar Springs resident Shirley Merlington as the 2015 Grand Marshal for the 76th Annual Celebration, to be held on Saturday, October 3, 2015. “The Festival is extremely proud and thankful for the many years of Shirley’s outstanding dedication to the Cedar Springs community,” said Michele Tracy, President of the Festival. Shirley was shocked when she found out the board had selected her. “I was really surprised,” she said. “It never entered my mind.” Shirley was born in Cedar Springs, at a house on Beech Street. She went to Cedar Springs Public Schools until 3rd grade, when her family moved to Sand Lake. She graduated high school there, and met her future husband there, Ronny Merlington. Shirley and Ronny settled in Cedar Springs after he graduated from Michigan State. “I’ve been in the same house in Cedar Springs for 48 years now,” she said. Shirley served as Executive Director of the Red Flannel Festival from 1990 to 2003. She also served as Director of the Cedar Springs Chamber of Commerce for 12 years, served on the Cedar Springs Board of Education, the Cedar Springs Women’s Club and was 5th District President of American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. “For 25-30 years I’ve been involved in everything in Cedar Springs,” remarked Shirley. Other positions she’s served in include the Board of Review, the DDA, the Elections Commission, and the Selective Service board. At age 77, she is still active in the Legion Auxiliary and has been for 34 years. “It’s very obvious Shirley loves the Red Flannel Town, and especially the Red Flannel Festival! Her connection to Festival Founders Grace Hamilton and Nina Babcock is very special to us. The Red Flannel Town is a better place because of her involvement and extraordinary volunteerism!” said Tracy. Shirley said it’s true that she loves Cedar Springs. “I love it! I love the Red Flannel Festival, and look forward to it every year. We usually have company. It’s always been thrilling to me. Ronny and I were both proud to be involved in it all of these years,” she remarked. “We couldn’t ask for a better town to live in.” Ronny was also a Grand Marshal several years ago. Shirley will reign this year, the Festival’s 76th, over the two weekends of the 15th oldest Festival in the state of Michigan, sharing the Red Flannel warmth of our community with visitors and residents. AMERICAN LEGION, MAIN & BEECH STREETS - OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FIELD AT MAPLE AND MAIN STREETS 19 The Red Flannel Story It all began in 1936 in the midst of “the worst winter in years.” The whole country suffered in the grip of heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures. A New York feature writer bemoaned the “fact” that, “Here we are in the midst of an old-fashioned winter and there are no red flannels in the USA to go with it.” The local newspaper, The Cedar Springs Clipper, owned and edited by “The Clipper Gals” Nina Babcock and Grace Hamilton answered the writer with a RED HOT editorial stating, “Just because Sak’s Fifth Avenue does not carry red flannels, it doesn’t follow that no one in the country does. CEDAR SPRINGS’ merchants have red flannels!” The story was picked up by The Associated Press and orders began pouring in from all over the USA. Jack Pollock and his wife Ann, owners of Pollock’s Store in downtown Cedar Springs, had a large stock of Red Flannels. They were tireless supporters of the early Red Flannel Festivals and “drop seaters.” Seeing the possibility of at least a few years of publicity because of our famous “drop seaters” and lumbering history, a “RED FLANNEL DAY” was planned for the fall of 1939. The love, pride and support of the community has kept the rich tradition alive! It has continued to be an annual event, held the last weekend in September and the first weekend in October for the 76th YEAR, making it the 15th oldest festival in the State of Michigan! The Festival Board of Directors thanks all of the sponsors of the Festival and the hundreds of volunteers who make this grand event possible! By Tanya Eldred, The Cedar Springs Historical Society If you have lived in or near Cedar Springs in the last 76 years, you have heard the story of how Cedar Springs became the Red Flannel Town—many times. But do we remember the efforts of the Clipper Girls—Nina Babcock and Grace Hamilton—to get the Red Flannel town on the map? When they answered the wire from the Associated Press, it was just the beginning. Metropolitan newspapers and the radio took up the cause and spread the word. They received a flood of letters from all over the United States and overseas inquiring about Red Flannel underwear. There was much more publicity than they expected. Nina Babcock (left) and Grace Hamilton (right) working on the newspaper in later years. In November 1939, Red Flannel Day was a bright Photo courtesy CS Historical Society. spot in a time of war, when people could forget what was looming on the horizon. That year, the town played host to thousands of deer hunters on their way up north to the deer camps. Merchants and clerks wore red shirts or hunting togs and the town was decorated for event. Five men from Grand Rapids chose the Queen from candidates submitted to the Clipper. After Red Flannel Day, orders for the red flannel underwear were received from as far away as Escanaba and Detroit, and other states such as Maine, Texas, California, Kansas, New York, Alabama, Rhode Island, Florida, and Wyoming, and from Canada and Great Britain. They answered these and news articles appeared in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Kansas City Star, Detroit News and Free Press, Michigan Tradesman, Atlanta Constitution, Life Magazine, Readers Digest, Independent Woman, and even True Comics. The Kansas City Star sent a reporter to interview the girls and they were interviewed on National Public Radio. The Clipper girls helped persuade a young man named Gerald Ford to run for Congress in 1948. As a congressman, Ford attended the Red Flannel Festival 25 times. His bus became a fairly common site on Main Street and the girls were always his faithful supporters. He went on to become Vice President and then President of the United States. We have made so many memories to carry with us for the rest of our lives. We will never forget all the amazing people we’ve been able to meet along this journey. Picking a single moment to highlight from this year would be impossible. We had an amazing time reading to the elementary kids, attending community luncheons, and of course participating in the events of Red Flannel Day. Getting to experience celebrations in communities outside of our own made for many unexpected memories. We were able to stand in giant clogs in Holland, explore the capital in Lansing, and experience the excitement of summer in Grand Haven. We would like to thank everyone who had a hand in this extraordinary year of our lives. First, we would like to thank our parents, not only for raising us, but supporting and helping us during our reign as Red Flannel Royalty. A very special thank you to Jenn Anton, Melissa Armstrong, Kaleigh Rosenberger, Ellie Brown and Penny Darling, for being our royal chaperones, and coordinating our events. Thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Maguire for taking care of the float for all the parades. We’d also like to thank our seamstresses, Mrs. Dubridge, Mrs. Bartlette, Mrs. McFarlane, and Mrs. Sabinas, for our three beautiful dresses and sashes, for which we received many compliments. Thank you to Wolverine World Wide for their donation of our wonderful shoes. To the Lucarelli and Patin families, who worked to preserve our stunning float, and Vanderhyde Ford along with Ed Koehn Chevrolet who supplied us with trucks to match, both of which we greatly appreciate. A very special thank you to all the individuals who donated to our scholarships, which will help us all pursue careers in the medical field. Our greatest thanks, of course, goes to the Red Flannel Festival, and all the men and women who volunteer their time to make sure the festival runs smoothly, year after year. We look back at this last year of our lives with nostalgic eyes, and are incredibly thankful. Forever yours, The Red Flannel Queen Scholarship Foundation THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to this fund over the past 26 years!!! The fact that these scholarships come directly from you – community members, past queen and court members, area businesses, parents, relatives and friends - means a great deal to the young ladies who are the recipients. Would you please join us by contributing to the Queen Scholarship Fund??
