He uses city scapes, people and architecture as his muse, especially Miami Beach. “When I arrived at the Art Deco District I immediately knew that Miami would be an integral part of my art. This place has real dimension and inspires a sense of wonder that has greatly influenced my creativity,” said Godon. A To know Godon is to know that he started out painting at the age of 11 in France. From there he moved to Brighton, England and made a name for himself (and a living) doing graffiti art on the street. Although Godon is now a respectable and talented artist, he once labeled his work “childish art.” Godon also invented a new technique called BildoReliefo. The pictures are highdefinition digital single print editions that transform Godon’s original oil paintings into a unique digital work of art. The process combines the traditional art of oil on canvas with digital technology. “The artist deconstructs each element of the original oil painting and reconstructs it while adding shadow lighting to acheive a three-dimensional effect.” And the effect is startling (and realistic) with exaggerations of form and fantasy. Much of Godon’s recent work relies on his love and admiration for Miami. “Everything here is surprising, from a simple parking lot filled with luxury cars to 22 Design District the incredible plastic people. The subjects - and inspiration - for an artist like me are inexhaustible! The paintings are now automatically part of my globetrotter album … Long live Miami!” said Godon. Jean-Pierre Delarge had this to say about Alain Godon’s work: “His representations are simplistic, his colors are vivid, and the outlines are defined by thin black strokes. Godon’s figuration achieves contour and definition in the composition of curved and straight lines.” In 2009, Godon founded the Rendez-vous annuel des artistes de demain, which is an annual event that helps new artists gain exposure to the public. At the second festival, that took place this year in Le Touquet, over 600 artists from all schools of contemporary art attended. Godon’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums all over the world. This year he was commissioned to design the poster for Enduropale, and his work was exhibited at the Fardel Gallery in Le Touquet. Godon currently lives in London and is represented in the US by Markowicz Fine Art in the Design District. The current exhibition of his work at Markowicz Fine Art gallery is called BildoReliefos. Ascanio Gallery I If there is a time in the year when area galleries shine, it is during Art Basel. Basking in the attention created by the most important art show in the United States (and sister event of Switzerland’s Art Basel), galleries bring in top-notch work. From pop art with a twist to the hauntingly emotional work of a rising star and Op Art and kinetic masterworks, we’ve done our homework and put together a list of must see exhibitions. O. Ascanio Gallery in the Wynwood Arts District is featuring The Visionary Eye, a collective exhibition of eight international contemporary art giants that includes 20 masterworks by Jesus Soto, Carlos Cruz Diez, Alejandro Otero, Victor Lucena, Francisco Salazar, Carlos Cabeza, Victor Vasarely and Bernar Venet. By playing with scale, color and geometric lines, these artists have created work that transcends the two-dimensional world and creates an experience that allows the viewer to become an active participant. Cruz Diez referred to this phenomenon in his work as “vibrations” because as the viewer changes locations, the image of his work changes creating multiple pieces within one. Similarly, Vasarely’s reality-defying geometric abstractions create visual illusions that stem from his belief that an “internal geometry” can be seen in every aspect of nature. The Visionary Eye will be available for viewing November 29 to January 15, with an opening reception November 29 at 7 p.m. (open to the public). O. Ascanio Gallery is located at 2600 NW 2nd Avenue. For more information call 305-571-9036 or go to www.oascaniogallery.com. German Pop Artist, Joerg Doering, will have a series of nostalgic pop paintings on display in Adamar Fine Arts in the Design District. Doering documents pop culture today and yesteryear through his quirky large-scale iconographic images that mix comic art characters with movie icons. In the oil painting Starboy, 2011, Olive Oil is superimposed over a double mug shot of Steve McQueen holding up a peace sign. Through his paintings, Doering makes a statement about the character’s relevance, historical place and iconic status. Design District 27 whose repertoire includes woodwork, animation bronze casting and cultural studies, has created pieces that evoke a primal past. Hollinger’s and Carter’s exhibits will be on display from December 1 to February 5 and Santos, Indiana, and Alexander will be on display from December 2 and February 5. 101 Exhibit is located at 101 NE 40th St. For more information call 305.573.2101 or visit www.101exhibit.com. Finally, during Art Basel week Milan artist and designer Alex Turco will be unveiling a new and innovative art installation. There will also be a cocktail party in collaboration with Colombo Stile and fashion designer Thomas Deambrosis. The opening party is December 2 from 7 to 10 pm at their new flagship store at 99 NE 39th Street Miami in the heart of the Design District. The cocktail party is open to the public. For more information, visit www.alexturco.com. ◆ The exhibit, titled Joerg Doering and Gallery Artists, will run from December 1 to January 7. Adamar Fine Arts is located in the Design District at 414 NE Second Ave. For more information call 305-576-1355 or go to www.adamargallery.com. The Hartley Elegies will we be on display at Etra Fine Art. Considered Robert Indiana’s best work since he debuted his art in New York in 1962, the series is an homage to American modernist, painter and poet Marsdsen Hartley. The series is comprised of ten large-scale prints inspired by Hartley’s German Officer Paintings (1914- 1915), and were created after the death of his lover in the war. Using his distinctive hard-edge style, Indiana melds military insignia and imagery that represents America, war and historical events to create what critics have said is his best work. Indiana is widely known for his iconic work LOVE, which was created for a Museum of Modern Art Christmas card in 1964. It was later used in a United States post office stamp series, coined, Love Stamps. The Hartley Elegies exhibition will be on display from December 1 to January 31 in Etra Fine Art at 50 NE 40th St. For more information call 305-438-4383 or visit www.etrafineart.com. 101 Exhibit in the Design District is having a group exhibition titled New Works. This exhibit will be divided into three rooms and features work by Jorge Santos in Gallery A, rising star Jason Shawn Alexander’s work in Gallery B and work by mixed media artists Karl Hollinger and Christopher Carter the 101 Backroom. Jorge Santos’ surreal, yet lifelike paintings have a hint of sarcasm that is disturbingly comical. The painting Rocket Man (2009) is the back view of a well-dressed man pointing a toy rocket at the sky as if it was a gun, a reminder of the relationship between technology and violence. Raised in the midst of political upheaval in Angola and Portugal, Santos makes humorous commentary of everyday life through his work. Fueled with emotion, Jason Shawn Alexander’s paintings are hauntingly beautiful. Although Alexander gained early recognition as a graphic novel artist he began to explore working on large canvasses. This medium allowed him freedom from the confinement usually seen in the graphic novel industry. His transition to the fine art world progressed, and his painting The Repeater was selected as a finalist in the Smithsonian National Gallery’s Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition 2009. Eclectic mixed media by Karl Hollinger and Christopher Carter will round out the exhibition with quadrille mosaics by Hollinger, including inverted peace signs and industrial warning labels that take shape from a distant view. Luckily for those with an eye for beauty – and space for decorative brilliance – there is a place to get handmade hand-cut mosaic designs made and installed in your home or office. scenes. Many of the mosaics preserved at Pompeii were the work of Greek artists. The Roman Empire used mosaics to celebrate their Gods and create domestic themes, but it was the Byzantine Empire that took it in a new direction covering walls and ceilings with mosaic artwork. Called Phoenician Arts, this new gallery can design and create a beautiful mosaic wall or surface in your home. “Our showroom is set up as a gallery where we can show people a lot of different patterns and styles. We try to show examples of modern and old world designs,” said Sam Klaimi, third generation mosaic manufacturing family member. But today Mosaic patterned walls and spaces are becoming more popular as people look to the past to help create glamour and elegance for the present. I Most of the mosaics are handmade and hand cut of natural recycled stone. They also withstand time and weather conditions because they are all natural. What many people don’t realize is that Mosaic murals are not something solely for museums and cathedrals. And that is exactly why Phoenician Arts opened a showroom - gallery space in the Design District. According to Klaimi, the mosaic field is rich with new ideas, approaches and organizations such as the British Association for Modern Mosaic and The Society of American Mosaic Artists. “When it comes to our products there are unlimited options. We always try to display as many patterns as possible to inspire and educate our customers about the endless possibilities,” said Klaimi. “We can make mosaic designs for floors, walls, hallways, dining areas, living rooms, archways or anywhere inside your home or outside. Our mosaic art work is a great alternative to paintings and photographs, giving the space around you a sense of authenticity that can’t be felt using traditional art work or decoration,” added Klaimi. Phoenician Arts has a design department dedicated to helping customers translate their ideas into timeless art pieces (to be enjoyed for generations). The service is free to customers and most orders can be completed in 15 business days. According to Klaimi, Mosaics dramatically enhance any space. People are using mosaics as a kitchen backsplash, for foyers, bathrooms, ceilings and inside their swimming pools. Businesses and restaurants use mosaics for decoration and as tabletops. And if you saw the beautiful mosaic work at Phoenician Arts you will understand what a truly beautiful addition it can be to any space. “All our mosaics are fully handmade in the same method used by early Romans 2000 Years ago. They are laid down on a mesh backing for easy and immediate installation and our master artist skillfully hand cut and lay the marble mosaics with great care and expertise.” The history of mosaic goes back 4,000 years or more. C harles Allem is to design what the Rolling Stones are to rock and roll. The South African born designer creates what some would call “wow” interiors with outer-worldly dimension and gracious grandiosity. He has been called a visionary – with a vision that comes purely from his most inner core. “I enjoy doing extraordinary spaces and am inspired by the senses. An environment is lovely when you look at something extraordinary and it touches you, it touches your eyes, it feels luxurious, warm and wonderful,” said Allem. Stylish is a very ambiguous word, but Allem is anything but ambiguous. “I create a total environment, and that means working with the landscape artist and the architectural firm. We do a lot of modern transitional design as opposed to traditional. That means taking elements from the past and combining them with modern accents." Maybe that is why the owners of a penthouse apartment in New York City entrusted Allem to create a total makeover of their coveted Manhattan living space. When Allem walked into the penthouse (that belongs to a Wall Street financier) he simply fell in love. He describes the terrace as big enough to host a dinner for 200 and was amazed by the extraordinary living room. After a brief introduction, Allem was already overflowing with inspiration and gladly took on the challenge refurbishing the landmark building. The 7,000 square-foot space has a 2000 square-foot wraparound terrace designed as a haven atop New York’s concrete jungle. The subdued color palette of parchment, blush, and taupe was paired with rich woods and antique metal finishes, creating a warm and sophisticated setting for relaxing and entertaining. Though this penthouse has an impressive pedigree, including former owner Earl Blackwell, who entertained the likes of Greta Garbo and Salvador Dali, it was essential that the design of this space be anything but old. That’s why a luxurious monochromatic palette, transitional-style furnishings and unexpected scale and materials were used. To add a rugged edge, monolithic split rock fireplaces anchored the expansive space. The floors were done in ebonized walnut in 12-inch planks throughout the space. Bronze hardware from Nanz adorned all of the walnut doors and millwork throughout the property. Furnishings throughout the home included vintage pieces alongside exquisitely upholstered custom designs. I enjoy doing extraordinary spaces and am inspired by the senses. Hanging over the expansive walnut dining room table is an 18-foot-long bespoke fixture. The flatware is from Tiffany’s and the walls are covered in leather from J. Robert Scott. The side chair is from Donghia and the barstools are from Holly Hunt. The low table, circa 1940 has beveled-mirror top and base and is by John Salibello. In the nearby bar, a hammered pewter countertop added a Parisian tone to complement the sophisticated ebonized paneling and elegant crystal barware behind the bar. The floor in the bar area is the same wide-plank walnut that matches the rest of the apartment. The clean lines of the furnishings, and the muted tones, helped to usher in a limitless sense of serenity. Allem extended the subdued palette into the master bedroom, adding terra-cotta tones and tufted-silk walls for warmth. Over a velvet-covered settee is an early-19thcentury French portrait; in front of it stands a circa 1940 table. On the bed bolster is J. Robert Scott fabric. Inside the apartment, Allem says, “you feel so removed – then you burst onto this incredible terrace. I didn’t want to clutter it with furniture.” The bathrooms had lavish finishes, solid bronze plumbing, and luxurious Pratesi linens to surpass every expectation. In addition to seeking products that evoked a luxurious quality, they were practical and functional. To keep up with the times they used advance yet user-friendly smart home systems. That means liquid crystal glass to frost clear glass at the flip of a switch. This innovation offered privacy without compromising the integrity of the design. When this project was complete Allem romanced the owners with flowers and candles. As they saw their new home with Allem’s vision fully executed, it brought tears to their eyes. Satisfaction is the ultimate understatement for both the owners and Allem. ◆ I create a total environment, and that means working with the landscape artist and the architectural firm. We do a lot of modern transitional design as opposed to traditional. That means taking elements from the past and combining them with modern accents. “ ” 44 Design District This Page Hand printed silk velvet drapes cascade in front of the solid bronze windows and doors that lead to the terraces. Behind the Designs Q & A: Paola Lenti Innovation in Design and Textiles Story by Diane Feen I Photos courtesy of Luminaire Paola Lenti is the founder of a design firm specializing in outdoor furniture and rugs with emphasis on innovative natural and synthetic materials. Lenti uses high quality contemporary, technologically-advanced textiles to create unique pieces (and rugs) for casual contemporary elegant living. Each collection features exclusive materials and colors developed by Lenti for her collection. The company was founded in 1994 by Paola Lenti with headquarters in Meda, Milan. She launched Rope, a high-performance yarn for her outdoor collection Aqua. In 2005, Rope earned Wallpaper Magazine’s award for best fabric, and in 2006-2007 the rugs Ray and Crochet were named “Best Flooring” by Elle Décor. Q A How does your background in graphic design influence the creative direction of the company? The sense of equilibrium, proportion, clarity and coherence between signs and messages transmitted are all skills that are paramount in graphic design. These skills are then transferred to the design, production and branding of the Paola Lenti brand. Where do your innovative materials come from? What is the process for sourcing the materials? I do research and have professional consultants for raw materials. I also study the alternatives offered by the market, especially the chemical 46 Design District sector. Once we have found the most suitable material for our products we transform it into yarn and adapt it to our needs. We create colors to match our line and then start producing semifinished products such as cords, braids and strips for our furniture and rugs. This process is done with our Italian partners that specialize in high-tech yarns or special weaving techniques. For outdoor items, that are sensitive to the environment, we make sure they have high performance capacity and will last, that is why research and development is paramount. What are interesting sources of inspiration for the designers working under Paola Lenti? Why do you work with Hi-Tech materials such as weaving and crocheting? How did this partnership of technique and technology come to be? Once the textile material has been defined and certified according to the quality and performance standards set by the company, it is entrusted to the designer. Because of his skills, and his capability to interpret the material, he transforms it into an object that is the result of the potential and limitations of each textile. Our idea is based on the belief that a piece of furniture should not overwhelm or intimidate the user. Instead it should lead to inviting and restful spaces to help people find serenity and equilibrium. In this sense, hand weaving or braiding represents an ancient and universally established tradition familiar to everyone in the world. These techniques are applied to high-tech materials that create resilient, long lasting, friendly products. Products are the result of team work, a team that I personally lead. Each member, from the designer to the engineer and the artisans, contribute with his or her particular skills and abilities. Each designer has his own personality and style, but designers that work with us usually share our vision and way of working. How do you create the design direction for each collection? What makes a product special enough to be in the Paola Lenti collection? How do you come up with such vivid colors for your products? Is there a particular point of inspiration? Its coherence with the rest of the collection, which is the result of an alchemy of form, aesthetics, material, color, as well as performance and functionality. We study and create our own exclusive colors. I personally take care of the color palette. My inspiration comes from nature; colors are then interpreted and combined according to my sensitivity. In the back garden the white-washed building is brimming with bougainvillea and vintage Taverna chairs with wooden tables under a lantern-lit tree. At Mandolin Aegean Bistro they stay true to the healthy recipes and philosophy of the infamous Mediterranean Diet. Their dishes are simple, rustic and authentic to the villages of Greece and Turkey. To do that, they use seasonal ingredients, local food and fresh caught fish each day. The menu has vegetarian options and the food is made with the highest quality extra virgin Greek olive oil. They also use fresh herbs and vegetables, farm raised meats and homemade breads, cheeses and yogurt. In addition to favorite Greek staples such as Horiatiki salad (tomato, pepper, cucumber and feta cheese), Fried Calamari, Saganaki, Gyro sandwich with tzatziki and Mousaka, are other regional specialties. They include shrimp with tomatoes, dill and feta with a splash of ouzo, Rustic braised pulled lamb and fresh Mussels with white wine, garlic, lemon and oregano. For a great salad try their Turkish spoon salad with finely chopped tomato, parsley, onion and pomegranate molasses. One of the special treats about a restaurant like Mandolin is their fresh grilled whole fish with olive oil, lemon and oregano. Also not to be missed is Marinated grilled octopus, grilled lamp chops, Mandolin sirloin or lamb burger or their homemade pide (rustic village flat bread) baked fresh daily. 60 Design District For starters check out the Greek Sampler – it is made of Tzatziki-smoked eggplant purée-tarama or The Turkish sampler, which is hummus-tomato walnut dip and a fava bean purée. They also have köpoglu, which is grilled vegetables with potatoes, eggplant and zucchini topped with Greek Yogurt. If you love peppers try their pepper melody with tomato, garlic and yogurt. They also have grilled Sucuk, Turkish chorizo, olive oil poached leeks with carrots, fresh mussels with white wine, garlic, lemon and oregano. Other popular dishes are grilled beef and lamb meatballs and Cheese Saganaki. If you want pasta check out the Village Pasta, which is Greek noodles with ground beef and béchamel sauce or the Chicken kebab with orzo pilaf and Maroulosalata. They also have grilled Atlantic Salmon with a tomato arugula salad. There are specials of the day with dishes such as Dolma, which are handrolled grape leaves filled with beef and rice topped with Greek yogurt or traditional homemade tomato soup. “We’re very much a humble restaurant who welcomes everyone,” said William Curtis, from Mandolin Aegean Bistro. If you have a sweet tooth try their Baklava or Turkish cookies with dark chocolate.
