When we think about women riders, we think
about Ladies of Harley. Started in 1986,
L.O.H continues to grow each year, fast becoming a community of its own.
There is however another women’s riding
group that has been around for many
years. Motor Maids was started by Dot Robinson and Linda Allen Dugeau in 1940. Born in
Melbourne, Australia on April 22, 1912, Dorothy “Dot” Robinson was considered the First
Lady of Motorcycling. When her mother went
into labor with Dot, her father drove them to
the hospital on a Harley with her mother beside him in one of his reliable sidecar. James
brought his family home the exact same way.
In 1930, at 5’2″ tall and 115 pounds, Dot entered many endurance runs. She won her first
race in 1930. At the Flint 100 mile endurance
race, she not only won but received a perfect
score. In many cases, she was the first woman
to win some of these races. Some were pair
races and she entered them with her father or
husband.

Really, are you ready for the summer riding
season? If your bike looks like this as you get
ready for a weekend ride, you may be packing
too much stuff. As Hope discussed at the
monthly meeting, packing is an art.
There are several overnight rides scheduled
for the summer. Upcoming is Keith’s picnic
ride in June, so get ready and pack light.
This month, May, is Women’s Rider
Month. Harley-Davidson staged a series of
events designed to celebrate the number of
women who have already hit the road on two
wheels as well as encouraging even more
women to get behind the handlebars. Two of
the larger H-D Women’s Rider Month initiatives included activities for the third annual
International Female Ride Day, and encourag-
Her mo o was that you could s ll ride a motorcycle and be a lady. She took pride in always being
ready for the camera and looking her best. Dot
encouraged the par cipa on of women in motorcycling. In 1939, she teamed up with Linda Allen
Dugeau and rode around the country looking
for women to join their new organization. Dot
found 51 women to be charter members of
Motor Maids of America (now Motor Maids
Inc.) when it was officially founded in 1941. It
was the first documented female motorcycle
club. One of the only stipulations in joining was

that the woman must own or ride her own motorcycle.
It is estimated that throughout her life, Dot logged in over 1.5 million miles on 35 different motorcycles. Her last motorcycle was a pink Harley-Davidson with a built-in lipstick holder. In 1998, Dot was inducted into the American Motorcycle
Association’s Hall of Fame – she was the
Today, Motor Maids International has over 1300 members. Did you
know that we have 2 members of Motor Maids in our HOG Chapter? Lorelei Hanson and Catherine Dostart are members. Would you
like information on being part of this group, talk to Lorelei or Catherine.
If there are any activities or rides that you would like us try to schedule, please let me or any officer know. You can reach me at

See you out there on the road. Ride safe!

Crows, Bass, and Harley Riders All Are Drawn To Shiny Things!
The grin that comes upon your face while traveling the North Cascades with friends is
irreplaceable. Thanks Dave and our road captains for heading up fun rides.
The warmth of sun and fresh air blowing thru vented coats, and leather vests, “Lord, thank you
for creating the beauty we have in the Pacific Northwest.”
Smiling faces around the pool, sharing and building friendships with riders new to us and
established old friends. Thanks, North Cascade HOG, you’re a great chapter!
Large platters of fine food with friends.
What a great God we serve, He knows what makes us tick.
“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise; be thankful unto Him and
bless His name, for the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting and His truth endureth to all
generations.” Psalm 100:4-5

Historian’s Thoughts
Our Chapter's History is made by us, the members. As I look at our group of great people at our
meetings and activities each and every one of you are making what it is. You are making our history
with every event you take part in, every meeting you come to, every ride you go on, you each and
every one of you are making history for our chapter. Each member is important and needs to be remembered and not forgotten.
This past month we lost a great member of our group, Mike Tanner. He fell and hit his head and 5
days later passed away as a result of that. He and his wife Vicki had been with us for about 13
years and were very active members. Mike held the office of our newsletters editor for 10 of those
years and did a great job at it. He and Vicki had homes in Sturgis and hosted many of us there. Steve and I stayed with them in 2012, where I got to know them a little better. To me Mike was a soft
spoken man and made you feel very comfortable staying in their home. He would set up his bread
machine every night and there would be that wonderful smell of fresh bread and coffee to greet you
in the morning. Vicki would handle the rest of the meal to start your day, having plenty of fresh fruit
and whatever else you could want.
On May 12th they had the funeral services for Mike in a chapel in Stanwood. A few of us met up at
the dealership and rode together. The service was attended by his friends and family and was
packed. It was the first service I had gone to for one of ours, and even though the reason for the
gathering was sorrowful, it was uplifting to see how much Mike meant to a lot of people. He will be
missed greatly.
It was also the first chapel I had ever walked into and up front was a motorcycle and his leather
jacket, it felt so right for one of our group.
So to reiterate again, each and every one of us is a part of our chapter’s history. We are a family, a
family we get to choose. It makes our relationship with each other more than just a group of people
joined by our interest in wheels, gears and mufflers of a machine. In Mike’s obituary it had a lot of
information about this wonderful man, it had something else to say. It said in lieu of flowers I want
people to remember this piece and realize that it has a deeper meaning, “Please do not give flowers, give your special person extra kisses and hugs!” Let the people in your life know how much you
care, love and value them.
So we say goodbye to one of ours, Mike it was wonderful to cross paths with you!

By the time you read this you will have had the opportunity to visit the charming village of Winthrop
at least a couple of times, three times if you count the FBR, but no one will know about that since
what happens on the FBR stays on the FBR (unless someone screws up and posts something on
Facebook).
Next up on the agenda is Keith’s Picnic and overnight ride around the Olympic peninsula. Friday
June 3rd—5th. For those that have not signed up and reserved a room in Quinault, there is an option of just riding out to Neah Bay for the picnic and then heading back to the ferry. If you have not
ridden out to Neah Bay and Cape Flattery, it’s an awesome ride and some great scenery. For anyone heading over in the morning, Michelle and I will be stopping at North Cascades Harley at
5:50am and then catching the 7:20 ferry from Coupeville to meet Keith in Sequim at 9:00. (On the
way back we will be having dinner Saturday night in Sequim at the casino and then staying at the
Red Caboose Getaway bed and breakfast. if anyone is interested in joining us they still have some
cabooses available, mention to them you are on a bike and save 10%.) if none of the above is appealing, then Vince and Allen will be leading a local ride at the usual 9:00am at the dealership.
Ride Safe

Safety with Hope
Hope Star
Safety on a long trip: Putting miles and miles on your bike can improve your riding like you wouldn’t
believe. Getting up every morning, throwing your leg over that bike and hitting the road for a full day
of new roads and new experiences is the best ‘safety training’ that I can think of. After about three
days you will start feeling ‘one with your bike’. A true ‘team’ in riding. You will know how it felt to
come into a curve a bit ‘hot’ but you kept it under control, how it worked when you had to hit your
breaks when that truck pulled out, and the joy of riding through forests or along the coast or dipping
down into canyons, sights beyond imagination. You now know
how your bike handles, your nerves about all the various
situations that turn up when riding starts to calm down and the
pure enjoyment of riding takes over. Yes, miles and miles,
day after dayL that’s safety training at its best. No written
article, no talks about what to watch out for, no video can
replace getting out and riding for hours every day. If you
haven’t done this ‘safety training’ then you shouldL. Either
alone or on a group ride. You won’t regret it, and your riding
skills will soar. As I say, ‘it’s not really a ride unless it’s over
500 miles’.

Assistant Directors Happenings
Jan VanMuyden
I hope Len and Lindy are enjoying their trip across this wonderful country of ours. If you follow Facebook you can keep track of where they have been and where they are staying. These is nothing like
seeing the U.S.A. on a motorcycle as we all know it brings a whole new dimension into travel.
While Len is away I am going to take on the Assistant Directors position, but I have also offered my
services to be Len and Lindys architect for their new house being built while they are away. I have
poured over several copies of Better Home and Gardens and Architectural Digest, and have been
able to come up with several fantastic housing concepts for them
Course this will all have to be OK’d by Ken Lee who just happens to be the Code Enforcer for the
City of Mt. Vernon. I do suspect that under the right circumstances that he will sign off on any of
these projects. The only thing that Len and Lindy will have to worry about is whether or not the architectural committee of the Housing Association will go along with the design.
So now for something important!!

Bike Bonding and Riding Women
Title by Vince
At this month’s officers meeting we were talking about the then upcoming bike course and the fact
that May is Women’s Riding Month. Vince put them together, not me.
I did attend the Bike Bonding Course and it was as good as I got when training to be a motor officer.
It was also a lot of fun! The things I learned I have already used. On our last ride Cheryl asked me
if I was doing turns differently and I was. Something I had forgotten over the years but doing it again
made all the difference in feeling really comfortable in the turns on the way to Winthrop. By the time
this comes out the second group would have done the course and I hope it will be offered again in
the future. We were the first in the state to do this advanced riders training. Riding small 125’s was
also a blast. Makes my own scooter seem big.
I also ate at the Roadhouse at the dealership a couple of weeks ago. The food was great and the
price very reasonable. Cheryl’s pickle was huge. The outdoor seating area is good but the nice
thing is there is a place inside the dealership to eat if the weather isn’t dry or warm enough. I give it
two thumbs up! Now on to the meeting notes.
Our Chaplain Buzz opened the meeting by reminding us that it was Mother’s Day this week. He
read Psalm 37:4, Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. He also
asked the ladies to listen to the next reading from Ephesians chapter 5; Husbands go all out in your
love for your wives. And for the husbands; Wives, understand and support your husbands in ways
that show your support for Christ. Buzz ended with a very wise saying from Solomon; Better to live
on the corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife. I personally believe that saying goes both ways.
It was then time for new members and guest to stand and be seen. Welcome to Ken, Dwayne &
Stephanie, Eric and Ryan. All ride Harleys of different colors. I’m still trying to remember why we
ask what color their bikes are. I think it has something to do with some members being color
blind. For the record my bike is ‘rouge avec des paillettes metaliques’.
Our dealership owner Sig then filled us in on what’s happening at the dealership. He introduced Will
who is the new event coordinator, let us know that the remodel is progressing and that there is now
a free Coke machine with a million different flavors or some number like that and the Roadhouse is
open from Thursday through Sunday. Sig said he was recently at the Harley museum and said a
new bike and hotrod display is coming and will be great. Sig said he is thinking of doing a museum
ride and tour next summer. If interested in helping see Sig. Sig is hoping the 2017 Harley demo
bikes will be in the area this summer, he’ll let us know if that happens. Harley rentals will be available soon through the dealership and Sig thanked us all for the business we do at the dealership.
Event coordinator Will filled us in on the dealership events for May. Mother’s Day party on the 7 ,
Parkinson’s event on the 19 , Wounded Warrior/First Responder event on the 22 and a poker run
that starts at the dealership on the 28 .

Minutes continued May Meeting
Our Director Tom reminded us it was Shane’s birthday but there was no singing of Happy Birthday. I miss those days when we would all join in a wonderful chorus in perfect harmony and sing
to all those having a birthday. Oh wait, that was in second grade. Never mind. Tom also asked
the membership what activities they want to do at NC HOG. We want to do things people want to
do and need ideas. I got an idea, let’s ride our bikes someplace and stay for a couple of days.
Activities Director Bob let us know that the week before they had the best ride ever over South
Pass. Those who missed it will forever wonder how they could have missed the best ride ever. At
least until the next best ride ever. There was then some discussion about the first Saturday ride
and its destination. Winthrop was discussed and it was decided that the ride would go somewhere,
maybe Winthrop.
Head Road Captain Dave gave a list of upcoming rides to Winthrop. The first Saturday ride and
the ride on 5-15-16. Just for information I rode to Winthrop on Mother’s Day. It’s still there. The
FBR starts on 5-27-16, a Cascade Loop ride, through Winthrop, on 7-9-16 and the Flight of the
Hummingbird Ride to Hood Canal on 7-17-16. Hopefully that rare bird will make an appearance. Just need someone to bring the humming bird feeder.
Out Treasurer Vince let us know we are still in the black and anyone who wants to see the books
just has to ask, pass a background check and sign a nondisclosure agreement. Vince let us know
he is planning on a fly and ride trip to Arizona in October if you are interested. Vince filled us in on
something he picked up at HOT Training; there will no longer be HOG state rallies but regional rallies instead. HOG membership is up on a national level but down on the local level. We at NC
HOG are always up at our level, or is that high at our level?
LOH Director Biggie also talked about items from HOT. We should ride together as members of
HOG and we are part of HOG because we like to ride. Before rides make sure that riders know
about the alcohol policy, no drinking during HOG rides. She asked that we welcome new members
and have them sit at your table at the meetings. Just remember to eat with your mouth closed; we
don’t want to scare them away. Lynne, who also went to HOT, decided to wear her back pack upside down and lost her ‘chip’. Biggie presented her with an orange chip, which is the most coveted
chip there is as orange is the newLwait for itLblack chip.
The LOH meeting will be on 5-17-16 at Bob’s. Again, men are welcome but have to sit quietly in
the corner. She also asked for help with planning the LOH Summit happening in October.
Safety Officer Hope talked about packing for a trip. Some pack too much and others not
enough. Always pack extra jeans and I would add underwear and socks to that list, they get stinky
after a few days if you don’t change them. Pack your bike early and take it for a ride before your
trip to see how the bike feels with the extra load. Large overseas travel trunks strapped to the bike
do change the balance point. I know from personal experience to test the new rain gear before you
leave on a trip. Bought the raingear a month before a trip, had to wear it on the first day out and
discovered the pants leaked, I swear I did not pee myself. Had to buy a new pair of rain pants on
the trip and by the time I got back the product return time had expired. Anyone want to buy a
cheap pair of rain pants?

Minutes continued May Meeting
Hope also had a wonderful display of NC HOG patches that were all available for purchase. Name
rockers are also available with your very own name on them but you have to order them. We tried
pre ordering one time and couldn’t get rid of a few. Anyone know someone named Egor, Gladis or
Sven? For the winner of the where is the pig contest the correct location was Winthrop, in front of 3
Finger Jacks, not to be confused with One Finger Willy’s across the street. Carrie and Mike won and
will split the prize, a new car! We had a difficult time cutting the car in half but were successful. They got both halves on the flatbed so towing wasn’t really that expensive. It’s always good to
share, right?
Activities Director Bob then got up a second time and let us know he was going to Winthrop. He also talked about the Points system and reminded us you get a point for showing up at NC HOG
events. Linda will have a list of people with points at the next meeting. At the end of the year all
persons with points will be placed into the new point’s computer system, run through the algorithm
and winners listed on punch cards.
Our Historian Lynne let us know that HOT was fun, more fun than COLD (Cranky, Over the Hill,
Loud, Directors Training held every year in Duluth Minnesota) and that she and Maggie will be making a photo album. She pointed out to the older members that it was a book not a record album.
Membership Officer Linda gave our membership number at 178. I always like reporting on Linda’s
report, it’s very short.
Our Editor Michelle asked for items for the newsletter. They can be just about anything that has to
do with riding and HOG. That trip you took with your old Aunt Martha in the old convertible to Utah,
no.
The meeting was opened to members and Keith let us know he is also going to Winthrop on the
7 . And filled us in on the details of his Picnic Ride in June. Yogi and Boo Boo may be on that
ride. Keith said he practiced counter steering while on the pre ride and suggested that doesn’t work
well when driving a car. July 9 with be the Christmas in July ride for Toys for Tots and he asked for
volunteers to man the card stops.
th
th
Cam from the dealership reminded us that the Shop Rides are on the last Wednesday of the month.
Dave Smailes told how the dealership helped him with a dead bike, picking up the bike and fixing the
problem. Dave thanked Cam for the good work.
It was then time for the ticket drawings. Rick Vander Griend won the white ticket and got the gift
card from the dealership. Rose won the 50/50. Mike Downing let everyone know he was selling the
tickets but forgot to buy his own.
There were Bloopers awarded at the meeting. Not all recipients were there so I won’t get into what
prompted the wonderful award. Jan’s artwork was suitable for the Googinhime that’s for sure (just
so you know it’s not the one in New York but the one in Duluth Minnesota). When the last two are
served with their awards we’ll talk about it.
Buzz closed the meeting with prayer giving thanks for a beautiful day, service personal and our
members. Thank you Buzz.

and Toys for Tots—and why not make those miles count with the wonderful weather and summer
season right around the corner. Also, a BIG THANKS to everyone who came out to support the
Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation last month. Not only did we raise money and awareness for the
