Dear Rec & Ed Community, Welcome to Summer@Rec & Ed. With over 500 classes and camps, let’s make this summer fabulous, fantastic and fun! For adults, we offer a wide variety of classes, including adult dance and music, technology, cooking, finances, and instructional sports. Some of our new offerings include a Parent/Teen Yoga class, a Pen & Ink Workshop, and a new adapted cooking class, “Summer Harvest Delights”. Youth & Preschool 25-33 For youth, we’ve got many engaging classes, workshops and camps. If you have a preschooler, check out our programs beginning on p. 25, including “Toddler Exploration Zone”, “My Big Messy Art Class”, and “Explore, Invent, Discover.” We’ll even help get your preschooler ready for kindergarten in the fall. There are exciting changes coming to our Rec & Ed Camps this summer. For the first time, we’re offering the nationally recognized STEAM camp, Camp Invention, an enrichment program backed by the National Inventors Hall of Fame. For our Themed Camps, Rec & Ed has revamped the curriculum and brought in a new staff, creating an enthusiastic, fun camp atmosphere in a safe, structured environment. Our new Harry Potter camp is sure to enchant wizards and muggles alike, and our Star Wars camp aims to be out of this world! We expect our camps to be more fun than ever with new activities and a 12:1 camper-to-staff ratio. The team we’ve put together is comprised of experienced teachers and seasoned counselors who are excited to be part of a new camp culture at Rec & Ed. Our goal is to increase parent and child satisfaction, so we hope you notice many positive changes right away this summer. Finally, we listened to your feedback about extended child care rates and hours, and we’re pleased to announce that extended care is now available for a very modest fee of $49 dollars per week. You can drop your child off for camp as early as 7:30 a.m. and pick up as late as 6:00 p.m. We have also arranged to have our own highly trained school-age childcare staff run the extended care program this summer, offering better than ever counselor-to-camper ratios and outstanding care. Thanks so much for choosing Rec & Ed classes and camps. Come explore the offerings and find something fabulous that’s just right for you. AARECED.COM Preschool Art Camps Art Around Ann Arbor Camps Miss Lesley leads two unique weeks of interactive art exploration for children. Campers learn about public works of art in Ann Arbor and the artists who created them. Children create their own responses to the art using clay, paint and other media, listen to stories from the camp library of literature and poetry, and create their own collaborative poetry and dances that connect with the artwork. They also keep a daily journal of art during the week and bring home notes and photographs. Please send your child in clothes and shoes suitable for dancing and art-making along with a healthy snack and water bottle each day. Director: Lesley Kabza Criscenti, the creative arts specialist. On Friday we all meet at the final location at 7pm so that families can view the work together and the children perform several dances for you from our week of creativity. Please join us! Tuesday-Friday. WEEK TWO (7/11 - 7/16) Artists in the Natural World Immediately after class every day, families are invited to meet Miss Lesley at a different artwork location in Ann Arbor at 12 noon. We visit the Maya Lin Wave Field, Island or Gallup Park and a Fairy garden as well as a tiny garden in the Michigan League. During the on-site visits, the children perform collaborative dance/poetry responses to the art. On Friday we all meet at the final work of art at 7pm so that families can all share in the performance and celebrate the week of art making together. Please join us! Monday-Friday. Power of Drawing Preschool Camp Ages 3 ½-5. The Power of Drawing teaches every preschooler the fun of “training the brain to see”. During camp, we draw subjects that interest young ones – like a puppy, a silly alien creature, and a fire truck. Focusing on pattern and symmetry, we create a colorful owl and a pair of mittens. How do we introduce the human face as portraiture as simply as possible?.... by drawing an Eskimo. Color, shape and form are explored in our “party scene” and we go to the zoo in our imagination as we draw and color a giraffe and the scenery behind him. The secret to our art program is that children ALREADY love to draw! We just take their love a little further. Scholarship recipients pay a $10 supply fee. Bring a snack and water bottle. Call 734-994-2300 x0 For Incoming Young 5’s, Kindergarten or First graders. Safety Town is one of Rec & Ed’s most popular summer educational programs. Your child learns safety awareness in a fun and engaging way using a child-sized mock Ann Arbor “town” explored on bikes. Kids learn how to evaluate safe from unsafe when confronted with potentially dangerous situations. Guest speakers include police officers, firefighters, water safety specialists and “Buster the Bus,” AAPS’ own talking school bus. Songs, games, stories and art projects reinforce the lessons about: • • • • • The 2016 program is sponsored by Ann Arbor Public Schools Community Education & Recreation Department in cooperation with the Ann Arbor Police Department and many community partners. Bike and vehicle safety Fire and police safety Riding a school bus Stranger and emergency safety Pedestrian safety Safety Town is even more fun with Fall 2016 classmates. We try to place children with others attending their school. This gives them a chance to meet students from their class before school begins this fall. We also make every effort to place students with friends as long as registration forms are submitted together and a special request is listed on the forms. •Please be sure to fill out the consent and emergency forms prior to the start of your camp week and return them to us. •Will your child benefit from extra support? Let us know so everyone succeeds! There’s a Special Needs Planning form to fill out. The Safety Town Summer Program is a great morning experience. See Safety Town Summer Camp on page 28 for all day fun Monday-Friday from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. •All participants receive a t-shirt and bike helmet. •Scholarships are available for those who qualify financially. • Fridays offer a short classroom demonstration so children can share what they learned.
