THE IDLEWILD
Welcome to Our Community of Faith!
CHIMES
A NEWSLETTER FOR THE CONGREGATION AND FRIENDS OF IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN MEMPHIS 
JUNE 2016
Elizabeth Houston Is Retiring This Month
In 2003, Idlewild began a search for a new Director of Children’s Ministry. We
asked Elizabeth Houston to come on board as an interim, which we thought might
last for about nine months at most.
The committee received many résumés from around the
country and interviewed a number of good candidates. After
two years of searching, however, we realized that we had
who we needed already on board — Elizabeth Houston!
And the rest, as they say, is history.
Now we have to say goodbye to Elizabeth, as she has
announced her retirement following this year’s vacation
Bible school, which is one of her real passions. We are
eternally grateful for “Miss Elizabeth” for her ever-present
faith and her steadfast love of God and God’s children.
Please join us on Sunday, June 19, when we will host a reception in Elizabeth’s
honor following the 11:00 service. We all wish her well in retirement!
Dear friends,
It has been a great blessing to have been your Director of
Children’s Ministry for 13 years! I will always treasure the many
happy memories of ministering to and with our children here.
—Elizabeth Houston

Notes & News
During the summer, children remain in their same Sunday school grades. They are
promoted to new classes on Rally Day on Sunday, August 21.
Special thanks to everyone who is helping with Surf Shack Vacation Bible School
and the Make A Difference Olympics this year. We appreciate the children and
helpers who make it fun!
With the blessing of Living Waters for the World, Idlewild’s clean water team will
conduct the first ever Clean Water University in Ghana this coming October. It is
our hope that the “class of 2016” CWU graduates will go on to teach the next
class there—and so on to the Glory of God and the truest spirit of sustainability.
Are you receiving This Week At Idlewild e-newsletter? The Idlewild Chimes
is not published in July and August—so make sure you are receiving TWAI and
getting news and events all summer long! If you are not receiving TWAI or
congregational emails, you can sign up on the website (www.idlewildchurch.org/
newslettersbulletins).
Do you know if your pledge is current?
Please make every effort to stay current with your donations this summer. The
church must remain mindful of good stewardship the whole year round. And if
possible, consider increasing your pledge for the rest of the year. If you have
questions about your pledge or contributions, contact Tonya Moses at 726-4681
ext. 29 or [email protected].

Hope & Challenges for Our Church
Here’s what’s happenin’ around Idlewild as we approach the summer: some
hope, a challenge, and more hope:
SOME HOPE: I wish everyone could have witnessed what I did last Sunday. Our
QUEST youth group (middle school kids) went over to Temple Israel to be with
Muslim and Jewish youth groups, to focus on what they could do for Syrian
refugees. This was a bar mitzvah project for a boy from Temple who was
preparing for the equivalent of “confirmation.” It was an afternoon of great
hope, and I’m grateful that our young people are so far ahead of where previous
generations are. After some ice-breakers and a brief film about the plight of
Syrian refugees, the three religious leaders (the assistant rabbi, a teacher from the
Memphis Islamic Center, and me) shared a bit about our faith traditions,
including misconceptions others have about it, and why helping refugees is a
vital part of our faith.
A letter to the congregation
from Pastor Steve Montgomery
There were two learnings: 1) I wish our political leaders (and many of our
religious leaders) could have witnessed this gathering. Every leader, especially
our Muslim friend, spoke of the love they have for our country and how blessed
they are to be here; It broke my heart to hear the demonization of Muslims from
our leaders. And 2) Pizza is the universal language.
THE CHALLENGE: As we approach the summer, I need to remind you that though many of you will be taking vacations,
God will not! The work of the church goes on, and it comes as no surprise that summers are particularly hazardous to
church budgets. It’s not because anyone says “ “I just don’t feel like supporting the mission of the church this summer.”
It’s because people forget. They’re out of town. There’s a lot of other stuff going on.
We tend to forget, except for those constant reminders during the fall stewardship season, that our ministry requires
money and resources. And there is one other reason that this plea is so important: Pledges were down this year. There
are several reasons for this, including the fact that over a two month period, we lost 5 long time members to death
whose support had been vital through the years. It generally takes about 5 or 6 new members to make up what we lost
financially for each long time member. So in addition to keeping your pledge up this summer, I’m making a request for
you to consider upping your pledge for the remainder of the year.
SOME MORE HOPE: Several weeks ago I asked the staff to complete the following sentence: One hope I have for
Idlewild is .... Here are a few of the responses:
 that we continue to be faithful to God’s direction for us;
 that IPC always stay as open and inclusive as it is, and stays in the heart of midtown Memphis;
 that it continues to explore new ways of inviting people in, nurturing them, loving them and helping them to
explore their own calls;
 that we become leaders in the city in offering support/safe places for parents, both members of the church and
members of the larger community;
 new restrooms;
 that the search for a Director of Children’s Ministry will be as successful as the searches for Pastor for Christian
Formation and Director of Operations;
 to live into its calling to minister to all creation with justice and love while honoring its excellent traditions;
 that children and youth will always be excited to be a part of the church family.
That’s just a few of them. This summer, think about these things. And give thanks.
Blessings,
3
Thanks to almost 400—and counting—generous donors, almost $10 million has been raised to support the future of Idlewild.
Now that the active fundraising is complete (with a few calls yet to be completed), the Building Committee has begun its work,
and is starting the process of working with the architects, brg3s, to prepare for the bidding process. Stay tuned and visit
www.idlewildchurch.org for updates. Send your questions, comments, suggestions to [email protected].
