at this spot where the settlers are believed to have buried the
nine men found tortured and killed at this spot. The Monks
replaced the found stone cairn with a stone and mortar cairn
made with the original stones in 1928. The same year the
State of Rhode Island also erected a concrete pier with a
brass plaque which reads “Nine Men’s Misery - on this spot
where they were slain by the Indians were buried the nine
soldiers captured in Pierce’s Fight March 26, 1676”
