Dear Parish Family, The season of Christmas is concluding once again and one would think that after celebrating this same event for some two thousand years human cultures would finally get tired of it all. The fact is, I think, that in our modern task-oriented culture, we hardly have any real excuses to pause and consider the things that matter to us the most. At the least, Christmas for both Christians and non-Christians alike, becomes the culturally enforced excuse to give somewhat meaningful gifts to those other than ourselves. I think that we need Christmas to remind us of people and to remind us that we have friends. But even more importantly, it is that time of the year that somehow manages to creep up on us unexpectedly with the sudden and dreadful thought of God. After all, Christmas represents in time what God generated in eternity – the mingling of blood and divinity in the fabric of our collective human family. And as the story goes, the foreign exchange of immortality with mortality becomes a real and historical event in that first and blessed body of water in the tiny womb of Mary. From the moment you and I became living things, knit together in the secret wombs of moms and our hearts became spoiled by curious looks and the love of mothers and fathers, and ever since the moment we learned to manage our thoughts and memories into cohesive patterns of self-identity, we’ve longed to belong. And as we’ve learned to reason, we’ve also learned to compromise our wild imaginings as if reason and desire were never meant to exist in the same place. I think we’ve placed an over-glorified virtue to independence and self-accomplishment, all the while neglecting the very thing that makes us who we are, which is each other. Now we just get lost in the strange circumstance of being unable to put a name to that persistent and annoying ache in those deep places within us, which we sometimes shove off as some residue of a bygone trait that finds no bearing in our evolved lives. Yet, there is a whole universe in every man, woman and child, and perhaps we find ourselves frighteningly alone within our own empty spaces. We hope, as it were, only to be found, discovered, and treasured. As we leave the Christmas season behind, let’s not abandon the awakening that it came here to bring, the definitive harkening of the possibility to love God, self, stranger, and life once again, or maybe for the first time. As the very quotable John O’Donohue once wrote, “It is difficult to love yourself, if you are not first loved. When you are loved, your heart rushes forth in the joy of the dance of life…Love somehow transfigures the sad gravity of life…Like someone who has been lost for years in a forgotten place, you rejoice in being found.” And what a joy it truly is to hear the words which define the life of every Christian sensibility “You are my beloved Son” – words, which, once uttered to the Son of God suddenly became words uttered to the rest of us. At the end of the day, the greatest truth is not that we are very alone but that we are very together, wrapped in the awesome mystery of Trinitarian love. Peace and Blessings, Fr. Matt Page 4 St. Theresa Seniors OUR STEWARDSHIP Year Actual Christmas 2015 Basket Online Total Year Prior Christmas 2014 $ 78,240 $ 2,581 $80,821 12/27/15 Basket Online Total $ 104,157 12/28/14 $ 32,563 $ 2,252 $ 34,815 $ 20,465 $ 1,844 $ 22,309 1/3/16 Basket Online Total 1/4/15 $ 23,526 $ 3,083 $ 26,609 $ 22,835 Pending Our Parish Uses For Online Donations Sign up for online giving at https://www.givecentral.org/location/314 Age 70 ½ and older... You can make a tax-free gift from your IRA. How? With an Individual Retirement Account “IRA” Charitable Rollover, also called a “qualified charitable distribution.” What is an IRA Charitable Rollover? An IRA Charitable Rollover is a direct transfer of up to $100,000 from your Traditional IRA to a qualified charity like St. Theresa Parish. Who is eligible to make an IRA Charitable Rollover? Any owner of a Traditional IRA who is at least 70½ years old is eligible. How does an IRA Charitable Rollover benefit me? Because the donation is made directly to St. Theresa Parish, you benefit by not having to count the donated amount as income for tax purposes - this can be particularly helpful in excluding all or part of your required minimum distribution. How long do I have to act? Under the new law enacted by Congress and signed by the President, the IRA Charitable Rollover is now permanently available. You can take advantage of this unique charitable giving tool each year. How do I make an IRA Charitable Rollover? Contact your IRA trustee or administrator and instruct them to make the contribution from your IRA directly to St. Theresa Parish. They will have forms for you to complete. WEEK AT A GLANCE... There is nothing quite like the joy and beauty of hearing people gathered together, singing all around you. During the Advent season our quiet entrance processions were simply beautiful as your voices supported the unaccompanied melodies of O Come, O Come Emmanuel and Creator of the Stars . What a joyful contrast it was to then hear the familiar Christmas carols being sung by great crowds at the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day liturgies, loud and joyous, all of us sharing in the angel’s song of ‘Glory to God in the highest.’ Thank you, community of St. Theresa, for sharing the exquisite joy of the Christmas season with the gift of your voice in song. When everyone sings together, we are united in the purpose of praising God, just like the multitude of heavenly hosts referred to in Luke’s Gospel. Singing as a parish community is not about the quality of our voices but the joy of all of us coming together to sing as one. No matter how strong or weak, great or not so great your voice might be, your participation in our sung prayer makes a difference. May the joyful sounds of music that richly filled our Christmas season continue to fill our liturgies as we sing together as a parish family.
