It started with the Halloween Party that was served with doughnuts looking like spiders, bananas that looked like ghosts, dirt pudding cups with pumpkin candies, and cookies. After the party we had one of our favorite entertainers, Travelin’ Musical Memories, perform for the residents. The night ended with Trick-or Treating. Arlington Place had many children come with their families to go from door to door to the residents to show off their costumes and to get candy. There was also a costume contest and the residents got to vote for the best one! Our lucky winner went to Brynn Kinkade of Laurens. Brynn was dressed as “Skye” from Paw Patrol. Halloween Party/Travelin’ Musical Memories/Trick-or-Treating! More Pictures from Halloween/Travelin’ Musical Memories/Trick-orTreating Costume Contest Winner: Brynn Kinkade as Skye from Paw Patrol Hazel and Erica/Life Enrichment Coordinator took a trip to Brynn’s house to deliver her prize for winning the costume contest! Pumpkin Painting Contest October is filled with carving pumpkins for Halloween, but why not change it up and paint pumpkins instead? Arlington Place had a pumpkin painting contest and it also gave the residents a chance to paint their own pumpkin and set it somewhere in building for everyone to see! Darwin, Irene, Evelyn, Erica/Life Enrichment Coordinator, and Stormy/Universal Worker all painted pumpkins that day! Our contest winner went to MaKynzee who received a Peanuts Blowup Inflatable and a pumpkin carving kit! YAY! Hanover Historical Village is located outside of Aurelia, Iowa. The village has a restored country general store that shows original furnishings, an old time barber shop, a unique two story machine shed, and an old time home provided with experience from long ago. Judy, Barb, Lenora, Lucy, Merna, Darwin, Al, Jack, Jerry, Clarence, Erica/Life Enrichment Coordinator, and John/Maintenance took a trip in October to the Hanover Historical Village. The volunteers were extremely nice and helpful. They talked about the history of the village and the families that lived in the village. After looking around, the volunteers presented coffee and cookies before leaving. It was a great time for the residents and brought back many memories from the neat antiques! Hanover Historical Village November 5 was National Doughnut Day. At Arlington we love our sweets, especially when the words “doughnut” and “social” are in the same sentence. All kinds of doughnuts were available to the residents of Arlington Place and to the community. The residents gathered downstairs in our dining room to enjoy doughnuts, coffee, cappuccino, and hot chocolate. DELICIOUS! Apple Orchard Doughnut Social What would Fall be without going to the Community Apple Orchard in Fort Dodge?! Jack, Judy, Darwin, Al, Lenora, Hazel, Ruth, Barb, Lauri/Manager, Deb/Marketing, and Erica/Life Enrichment Coordinator traveled on a beautiful Fall afternoon to the Apple Orchard where we walked around the gift shop to pick up some goodies and then sat down for some apple pie and ice cream! Veteran’s Day is a day of remembrance for those who fought for our country! At Arlington Place we would like to honor Jerry, Al, Darwin, Barb, Clarence, Roy, and Clinton as Veterans. The morning of Veteran’s Day, Lenora, Jerry, Al, Al’s son and daughter, Darwin, Judy, Merna, Erica/Life Enrichment Coordinator, and John/Maintenance went to the Pocahontas Area High School for the Veteran’s Day Program. That afternoon Corinna/Culinary Coordinator made some delicious sugar cookies that were red, white, and blue for our Veteran’s Day Social. At the social, coffee and cookies were served, “God Bless America” was sung, said The Pledge of Allegiance, and the Veterans of Arlington Place told stories from the years they spent in the service. Veteran’s Day Dairy Queen *In October, we celebrated Irene, Rachell, Judy, Jerry, Joan, & Stormy’s birthday! *In November we celebrated Brittany/Universal Worker’s birthday! *December’s Birthdays: Al, Jack & Donna At Arlington, the lunch outing for the month of November was to Dairy Queen in Emmetsburg. Lenora, Barb, Darwin, Jerry, Al, Jack, Erica/Life Enrichment Coordinator, and John/Maintenance hopped on the bus to Emmetsburg’s Dairy Queen for lunch. The tables were filled with hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken strips, French fries, onion rings, and cheese curds! WAIT, we can’t forget the delicious ice cream! DARE-TO-DREAM: DARWIN WURR Darwin Wurr was a U.S. Army Veteran who served in the Korean War for 2 years. In Pocahontas, there are memorial statues at the court house with every Veteran’s name from Plover, Laurens, Havelock, Rolfe, Ware, Pocahontas, Gilmore City, Varina, Fonda, and Palmer. Darwin approached Erica, our Life Enrichment Coordinator, about the statues up at the court house where his name was found. They went to the court house, found his name, took a picture next to it, and talked about his time in the service. “I only wanted to serve the two years. But they could call you back anytime to serve again. Two years was enough for me.” Just seeing the look on Darwin’s face when he saw his name, you knew how proud he is to be U.S. Army Veteran. Resident Spotlight—Jack McCartan Our Resident Spotlight for the month of December goes to Jack McCartan. Jack enjoys many things but he really likes to watch basketball. He enjoys watching Pocahontas play, especially the high school girls’ basketball team last year. Jack also enjoys horses. An interesting fact about Jack is that he likes music—old time music and country western. His favorite song is “Strawberry Roan” because it’s about horses and most of his life was devoted to horses. Jack chose Arlington Place of Pocahontas because he wanted something that was built around the word “home”. Hospitality is what Jack likes most about Arlington. “Everyone seems to be good at what they do around here.”, states Jack. Jack’s favorite outing at Arlington is going on the bus. “I like going to Emmetsburg. John takes us around the lake and it’s nice.” His favorite meal is breakfast where he gets one egg, sausage, toast and a cup of coffee! Jack states it was easy for him to make friends here when he first arrived. “I like everybody!” Jack would recommend Arlington Place of Pocahontas to everyone! A joint is where two or more bones come together, like the knee, hip, and shoulder. The surgery is usually done by a doctor called an orthopedic surgeon. Sometimes, the surgeon will not remove the whole joint, but will only replace or fix the damaged parts. The doctor may suggest a joint replacement to improve how you live. Replacing a joint can relieve pain and help you move and feel better. Hips and knees are replaced most often. Other joints that can be replaced include the shoulders, fingers, ankles and elbows. A new joint, called a prosthesis, can be made of plastic, metal, or both. It may be cemented into place or not cemented, so that your bone will grow into it. Both methods may be combined to keep the new joint in place. A cemented joint is used more often in older people who do not move around as much and in people with “weak” bones. The cement holds the new joint to the bone. An uncemented joint is often recommended for younger, more active people and those with good bone quality. It may take longer to heal, because it takes longer for bone to grow and attach to it. New Joints generally last at least 10 to 15 years. Therefore, younger patients may need to have the same damaged joint replaced more than once. Joint replacement is becoming more common. More than 1 million Americans have a hip or knee replaced each year. Research has shown that even if you are older, joint replacement can help you move around and feel better. Any surgery has risks. Risks of join surgery will depend on your health before surgery, how severe your arthritis is, and the type of surgery done. Many hospitals and doctors have been replacing joints for several decades, and this experience results in better patient outcomes. For answers to their questions, some people talk with their doctor or someone who has had the surgery. A doctor specializing in joints will probably work with you before, during, and after surgery to make sure you heal quickly and recover successfully. Life Enrichment Coordinator: Erica Wipperling 2015 is about to come to an end and I want to thank the residents, family members, the community, and staff for making this year very successful! This was my first year for a lot of things at Arlington Place of Pocahontas. I was clueless and shy on somethings but everyone here understood and made me feel welcome. The residents let me try new activities, some worked and some didn’t, made changes, and made me love doing what I do at Arlington Place. I hope to bring new and exciting activities for 2016! I want to thank everyone for letting me grow at Arlington and making the residents happy in 2015! Let’s start out the New Year with a BANG! In December we have MANY things going on for the holidays and I’m extremely excited and thrilled about it! We have Christmas tree decorating, going to see some Christmas lights around town, hot cocoa, Christmas entertainment, Christmas caroling, an ugly Christmas sweater contest, soup supper, and our New Year’s Eve Party! I hope you all are ready for a busy month! I can’t wait! The staff at Arlington Place sure know how to have fun and keep themselves entertained as much as possible. Bring to a boil and boil 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in butter. 2) Stir in 1 ½ cups powdered sugar and whisk or beat with a mixer until smooth. Let frosting set before storing. Maintenance: John Harter Winter is coming! How to get your home ready for the winter: 1) Check for leaks: Weather stripping and caulking is the cheapest and most effective way to cut down on energy costs. 2) Insulate your attic: Seal holes and prevent rising warm air from leaving the house with insulation. 3) Inspect your heating system: Get a routine maintenance check of your heating system before winter weather hits. John is off for 6 weeks due to knee surgery. There will be a replacement for maintenance when needed. We sure are going to miss John for those 6 weeks! Let’s be sure to have a warm welcome when he comes back! Name Santa’s Reindeer CHRISTMAS TRIVIA! What magical article of clothing brings Frosty the Snowman to life?
