My fascination with this scene
begins with the light sparkling
across the white fur and rusty
brown strips, and the dancing
water as it ripples across the
golden sand. It continues with
the intriguing shape of the
tiger’s shadow and soft focus
effect of the moving legs under
water. The final enchantment
is the fall leaves floating on the
surface, as they swirl out of the
sunlight and into the shadows,
giving the sense of depth to
the water. The diagonal placement of the tiger adds to the
drama of the dramatic lighting
of Pond Crossing.

Medium: Size: It is late fall in Canada. The long shadows of the late afternoon are creeping along the ground turning the icy snow blue in the shadows. In the sunlight the snow sparkles and the dried grass and leaves glow with the glancing side light.
The wolf pauses, his attention caught by a faint sound. Still for only a moment, the fringes of his coat catch the light and radiate fire and vitality.

Each is signed, numbered and

Got Milk / $575
Growing up in Wisconsin,
I have always had a fondness for the dairy cows
that dot the countryside.
They have an innate curiosity and will all come
up to watch you if you
stop to admire and photograph them. This particular cow had a great
expression and this, plus
the wonderful backlighting, made for an irresistible combination.

My trip to Antarctica was the trip of a lifetime. The first morning on shore,
brilliant sunlight made the ice floes glow. I wanted to capture the nuances
of the colors in the ice and the endearing character of the Adele penguins.
The successful colony had tens of thousands of breeding pairs.

“Dogwood Cat” is an etching
I did from a series using my
cat named “Elvis” because he
was a stray from Tennessee. I
use the etching and aquatint
method to produce the finished image and then work
with a professional printer
so that I know the edition
will be consistent.

Bees / $950
This painting was inspired from my interest
in what was happening to our honey bees. It
was a beautiful spring day and I was enjoying the warmth of the sunshine after a cold
winter, as I was observing the early blooms
it really hit me that I wasn’t seeing as many
bees as before. They are such fascinating
creatures, and we owe so much to this one
insect.

the shade. While there isn’t
very much of it out on the
plains where they find most
of their prey, any protection
from the sun will do.

These great American cats are most
familiar in the west. With the banning of hunting in so many of their
areas, they are expanding ever more
where they come in confrontation
with the ever expanding human
population.
Their population in Florida is doing
very well probably because of some
new blood from western animals.

Lucy / $810
Lucy was an indoor cat who used to sit
on the back of this chair and watch everyone as if she was pretty tough. Her
cool, confident attitude would always
disappear if someone offered her the
chance to go outside, then she would
become indifferent and slowly leave the
room. With this painting I was hoping
to capture that cool, confident attitude.

“I’ve always been fascinated with animal behavior
and watching the cows &
calves following roundup is
no exception. Sorting them
creates quite a bit of noise
with the calves calling & the
cows responding. But even
though it was noise to me,
they actually seemed to recognize each others voices &
eventually everyone would
settle down.”

As art director for the Dallas Zoo, I’ve learned so much.
Whether researching the causes of amphibian decline
for educational graphics, or learning of the devastating effects of habitat destruction while working on a
butterfly exhibit, I’ve become more involved and focused on animal conservation.
I’m lucky enough to be able to observe African Penguins whenever I like. In this case, I’m afraid my
sketches of the African Penguins quietly morphed into
King Penguins. I just love the color of the Kings.

It’s a “Cape” Buffalo / $800
In 1975 I was thrilled to make my first trip overseas to Africa.
I returned there in 1999 for another trip around the game
reserves. The Cape buffalo, (wrongly aka “water buffalo”) are
among the most dangerous of the ‘big five‘. With their big
horns and imposing manner they strike a presence that can’t
be missed. It is what I have tried to capture in this painting.

Picasso’s Muse / $875
I had taken several good reference photos of the SaddleBilled Stork preening. It struck me how much this bird
reminded me of Picasso’s deconstruction of his figures,
only to reassemble them in a whole new context (such as
Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and Head of a Woman). I saw
a direct correlation between Picasso’s paintings and the
physical appearance of the Saddle-Billed Stork. I choose
to paint a very abstract shape, with the intention of creating a moment of visual confusion for the viewer; until
he/she sees the stork in its realistic context.

Most of my trips to the zoo to
collect reference for my paintings are in good weather. When
it is warm the polar bears are
not very active. I decided to

for more activity. The sub zero

they played the entire time I

The Raquet tailed roller is a resident of Africa. They prefer open
woodlands and dine on insects.
They somersault in mid air, which
is how they got their name. I like to
paint them because of the beautiful blue color they wear. They are
not endangered.

UNTROUBLED TWOSOME
$860
This relaxed lion couple had been
mating about every 15 minutes for
one day. Four days later they went
their separate ways, looking lean and
hungry after a marathon mating session.
I find lions difficult to paint because
their colour varies so much depending upon their age, the weather, the
surrounding bush … and many more
variables. Their colour doesn’t come
out of a tube, it has to be mixed without becoming a dirty mess.

Laid-Back Cat $950
Given the scarcity of these beautiful, endangered cats, it is a rare privilege indeed when I
spot one in it’s natural habitat. Being diurnal means that the light is usually more conducive to getting ‘that shot’ and making hurried sketches before the cheetah is up and off in

The American Robin is one of
the most familiar and widespread birds in North America. Considered a harbinger
of spring in many areas, the
Robin is recognizable for it’s
brick red chest and melodic,
caroling song. I love watching
them search for earthworms

stopping to listen, running
again, then grabbing a succulent, juicy earthworm!

“Big Bull, Small Gathering”
was inspired by the small
groups of Bison scattered
about the area. They were
clearly part of the same herd

group of cows. The round circular shapes of these animals

diagonals of the surrounding

Zebras are such a joy from an artistic perspective with their wild
patterns. I chose to break from
my normal medium and depict
them in black and white, using
graphite and charcoal. After 14
trips to Africa I had lots of inspiration, and I really enjoyed the
challenge of creating texture and
three dimension with only black
and white. Graphite for me is a
delicate procedure, and I can’t use
color to create drama, but I really
liked the effect the graphite produced.

Certain bird and animal species
seem to invite human comparisons. Burrowing owls are one group

The inspiration for this painting are
my two wolves - Denali and Willow. I
took lots of photos of them when they
were pus - I loved the “innocent” look

looks to adults. They have big ears, big
paws and are “fuzzy”. It’s always quite
startling to me when I see a painting
where the artist simply tries to make
smaller “adults” as . Think about a
painting of humans with the mom
holding an “infant” that is just a scaled
down adult! Infant humans look quite
different from adult humans - and so
do baby animals look quite different
from adults!

A sculptor friend had admired my
chickens at the Loveland Invitational Show, and said that since I
did chickens so well, why didn’t I
put them into compositions with
other animals? He suggested that
I come up with a sculpture having
the title of “Ham ‘n Eggs”, and thus
the idea was “hatched”. I needed
a happy-looking pig, preferably
rounded but immature, and a very
contented-looking hen. As my hens
tend to enjoy riding around on my
back at times, I figured they might
occasionally sit on the backs of other animals as well. A nice little pig
might make the ideal perch at nap
time, thus was the composition determined - and the sculpture itself
came together quickly once I began
to work on it.

Having lived in Florida for two decades
and never seeing an iguana before I was
surprised one morning to see one on my
dock. I was intrigued by it’s prehistoric
look and made some quick studies of it.
Iguanas are native to South and Central
America as well as the Caribbean. These
non-natives have adapted well to Florida and now number in the hundreds of
thousands. Our climate keeps them from
going any further north. They live in the
wild for 20 + years (much less in captivity) and grow to 6 feet or more. They
are primarily herbivores and love to eat
leaves and ornamental flowers. Not all
Floridians are happy with these new arrivals, but I was glad to get an up close
and personal look. They’re sort of cute in
their own way.

I’ll never forget the day I watched our

in the open field. I waited by the culvert I knew he used to cross under the

What a beautiful animal! And what
a thrill to observe him at such close

craggy rock outcropping as an observation tower, always alert to that sound
or slight movement that might indicate the presence of his next meal - or

flutter across our North American landscape.
Traveling thousands of miles from its winter

generations for this insect to reach its northern breeding grounds. Come autumn the migration reverses. I’m fortunate to be located

Space Invasion

Commissioned work frequently gives
me the opportunity to study creatures
often much maligned. This piece began as a request from The Wildlife Experience in Parker, Colorado!
Rattlesnakes fill a 3.5 million year old
niche in nature, keeping rodent populations in check. They, in turn, are food
for hawks, eagles, ravens, roadrunners,
kingsnakes, bullsnakes, badgers, coyotes, bobcats, alligators and bullfrogs!
But humans are their greatest threat.
Mostly nocturnal creatures, they are
reluctant to be active below 40° or
above 94°, during windy periods or
full moonlight, spending most of their
secretive lives in cool dark rodent burrows and deep rock crevices.

Coyote Sketch is an example of
