SPRING BRANCH, Texas — Leonard "Joe" Shute, 79, died April 13,
2008, in San Antonio, Texas, of liver disease.

Mr. Shute was an electrician and purchasing agent for many years at the Bailey Company, was an electrician
for Erie Scientific in New Hampshire, had his own electrical contracting business, was Amesbury's wire
inspector, and was a volunteer on the Amesbury (Mass.) Fire Department for 20 years, achieving the level of
deputy fire chief.
He is survived by his long time partner, Shirley Hearn of Spring Branch; one son, Wayne L. Shute of Mesa,
Ariz.; one daughter, Linda J. Mercer of Canyon Lake, Texas; three grandchildren, Tyler Shute of Mesa,
Crystal Mercer of San Antonio, Texas, and Haley Rips of Canyon Lake, Texas; and two greatgranddaughters, Morgan and Autumn Gilbert.
He was predeceased by his ex-wife, Arlene (Langlois) Shute; and five brothers, Arthur, Robert, Cliff, Kenneth
and Richard Shute.
WE REMEMBER: He was born March 29, 1929, in Amesbury, Mass., the youngest son of the late Frederick
W. and Edith S. (Wilson) Shute. He was an avid hiker and a member of New England's "Over 4,000-Foot
Club" having climbed all of the highest peaks in New England. In 1980-81 he was a member of a group called
"HikaNation" that hiked more than 4,000 miles across the U.S. from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean.
SERVICES: Calling hours will be held Saturday, July 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the E.V. Jutras & Sons
Funeral Home, 118 Friend St., Amesbury. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. in the funeral home.
