So…….do you always wear gloves? This is

Hello, Hello,Hello……….
Well another month has come and gone. My goodness time does fly. But you
know what, we are entering my favorite time of the year. Yea, yes, yes. Fall,
which , "up north" meant leaves changing to red, gold, maroon and brown. Also
the very smell of fall filled the air.
Those of you from the far northern states know what I mean. Then comes Halloween with the
pumpkins and scarecrows decorating the houses and lawns. By now the mountain trees had
given up their leaves and exposed THE LADIES OF WINTER, the evergreen trees.
November… the wind picks up and the fallen leaves do their final dance and all
welcomes Thanksgiving. I really, really loved thanksgiving as it meant Christmas.
O my yes. I always put the tree up and started the Christmas decorations
Thanks giving night. You see I figured if I was going to do all that work….Well I
damn sure wanted to enjoy it for a while.
And then there was the first snowfall. Do you remember????? The whiteness
and softness of it. And even though we were much younger then, that first snowfall
made us feel like little kids. Little kids that knew Christmas was coming.
But guess what? If I recall things right, that feeling lasted until January second
and now all I have are memories shoveling….shoveling….shoveling. Along
about that time, we sure were looking forward to Spring.
So much for looking back, Here is hoping the coming months bring you all joy
and lots of memories. We can never be tooo old for that .
Speaking of fall memories don't forget, the fall Region A rally being held in
Eufala, Alabama. It is the last week end of October so if you still want to see fall
foliage, you can't miss this one.
As I am closing this , I want remember Grace Wells of FL1H , Daytona Beach
Florida who passed away September 10 2016. Gracie we will miss you.
Until next time Remember……….
Watch out for the guy behind the guy in front of you. Because that guy is you and
we need you around.

Rider’s Ed October 2016 Newsletter Article
Topic: Hazardous Attitudes and Antidotes
Reference: Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, FAA-H-8083-25B, 2016,
located at http://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/
aviation/phak/media/pilot_handbook.pdf.
Introduction
I have been a professional pilot for the last 50 years. I have only been a serious
motorcycle rider for the past 3 years. I continue to be somewhat amazed by the
similarities between these seeming unrelated endeavors. In the March 2016 rider’s ed presentation, I addressed these topics common to both pilots and motorcyclists.
-Situational awareness
-Training
-Equipment
-Prebriefing
-Preflight
-Vision
-What if planning
-Fun!
In this article, I will address a pilot-related topic taught to new pilots and often
refreshed our more experienced pilots as well. As you will see, this topic clearly
applies to motorcyclists and well. The topic is hazardous attitudes and antidotes.
The Five Hazardous Attitudes
Attitude is a motivational predisposition to respond to people, situations, or
events in a given manner. Attitude affects the quality of decisions. Good decisions while riding contribute to safety and mishap avoidance. Studies have identified five hazardous attitudes that can interfere with the ability to make sound
decisions and thus may contribute to unsafe practices and acts that can jeopardize
safety and mishap avoidance. Associated with each hazardous attitude is a common verbal phrase or thought that helps identify the hazardous attitude in ourselves and others. On the left side of the figure below are the five hazardous attitudes and the common verbal phrases that help identify the hazardous attitudes.
The reader should mentally replace the word pilots(s) with motorcyclist(s).
Antidotes
6
Hazardous attitudes can be effectively counteracted by redirecting or applying an
antidote to the hazardous attitude so that correct action can be taken. Recognition of
hazardous thoughts is the first step toward neutralizing them. After recognizing a
thought as hazardous, the motorcyclist should then apply the corresponding antidote
as shown in the figure above.
Summary
Ask yourself if you have now or ever had one of these hazardous attitudes while riding your motorcycle (or driving a car). If yes, then please reflect on the recommended antidote to counter the hazardous attitude in order to improve motorcycle safety
and mishap avoidance.
Y’all be careful out there, ya heah!
