Château Eza *****
History:
Château Eza was built 400 years ago within the ancient city walls of
the 9th century village of Eze.
In modern times the Chateau was a resident of the Prince William of
Sweden. From 1923 to 1953, as an author, he did much of his writing
in this location. The modern comforts of Château Eza did not come
easily or inexpensively. André Rochat, the Swiss owner from 1976 until
the end of 1993, did not simply put out an "open for business" sign.
Before he opened his private residence to guests in 1985, he
completely modernized and renovated the premises. All the
construction materials had to be brought up the steep winding streets,
1300 feet above the sea, by donkeys which are still present to greet
guests.
The result was truly a masterpiece for all to enjoy.
Rooms:
Each of the 10 guest rooms (and suites) can be reached by walking
under stone passageways, past cave-like shops and restaurants, and
via ancient stone steps and walkways which lead to the individual
doorways of the chambers and suites. The rooms have been newly
decorated with modern comforts such as individual safe, TV,
telephones, and private bathrooms including hairdryers; most
accommodations feature private balconies with breathtaking views !
Restaurant:
Château Eza is not only a hotel, but also the site of an award-winning
Michelin-starred restaurant where the chef’s culinary delights are
rivaled only by the stunning panoramic views.

Crillon le Brave****
History:
Hotel Crillon le Brave is a relaxed and informal refuge where you can
enjoy all of the simple pleasures of Provence. Located about 25 miles
northeast of Avignon, our 32-bedroom hotel is perched on top of a tiny
hill village surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. The views from
our rooms, terraces and gardens are stunning.
Rooms
The Hotel's guest rooms are spread over seven old village houses
that are connected by bridges, alleyways and hidden courtyards.
Each of the renovated houses has its own charm and character that
reflect the rich history of the village. The 23 bedrooms, 7 suites and 2bedroom house have all of the comforts that you would expect and the
hotel's facilities will give you plenty of things to do without ever leaving
the property.
Buildings of Hotel Crillon le Brave
The many buildings which make up the Hotel date back originally to
the 17th and 18th centuries although the village traces its history to
the Roman era two thousand years ago. Like in many Provençal hill
villages, each new generation constructed its homes on the ruins of
their ancestors so that the buildings we see today have foundations
and cellars that date back hundreds of years.
Restaurants
This usually starts with a great dinner in our main Restaurant Jérôme
Blanchet, either in the magnificent stone vaulted dining room or,
weather permitting, on our spectacular terraces overlooking the
vineyards and olive groves of Provence.
Another dinner option, most nights in the busier months, is our Bistrot
40K, a rustic celebration of food and wine produced within 40
kilometres of Crillon le Brave. For a relaxed evening in a perfect
setting, do try Bistrot 40K one of the nights of your stay.
Breakfast and lunch are served in La Grange or on the terrace and
our Grange Bar and Terrace Ventoux are popular places for the
unhurried contemplation of Mont Ventoux and the view out over the
Provençal landscape. From the early hours to late at night, the Grange
is the place for sustenance and the strategic beating heart of the
buildings, alleyways and courtyards that make up our Provençal
retreat.

11.25 am: Private transfer with an English speaking driver from

September 2: Monaco & Eze
9:00 am: Meet your English-speaking licensed driver-guide and
enjoy a panoramic tour of Monaco.
Enjoy a walking tour of Monaco to view the Prince’s palace, the
cathedral, Princess Grace's tomb, and to learn more about the history
of this mythical city. Afterwards, visit the heart of Monte-Carlo with its
Casino and the Hôtel de Paris.
Monaco is situated on the Cote d'Azur, between Cap d'Ail and
Menton, only a few kilometers from the Italian Riviera. It is one of
those magical, glamorous places of worldwide renown. Monaco is a
prosperous, independent sovereign state with its own government.
The head of state is His Royal Highness Prince Albert II. Monaco
definitely has a privileged location. This tiny capital (nicknamed “the
Rock”) is built into the mountainside and spreads down to the shores
of the Riviera. 31 hectares have been added to Monaco's surface by
building out onto the water. It is sunny almost all year round, and
fabulous parks and gardens have been laid out throughout the city.
There are sumptuous boutiques with the latest fashions, palatial
luxury hotels, and very chic restaurants. The cultural and sport centers
are fitted out to perfection, and everywhere you look, stretchlimousines and Porsches travel along Monte Carlo’s famous twisting
streets.
You can visit the Prince's Palace, which was built on the site of a
th
th
13 -century Genovese fortress. Admire the splendor of the 16 th
century Italian Gallery, the Louis XV lounge, and the 17 -century
Palatine Chapel.
Do not miss the Oceanographic Museum that was inaugurated by
Prince Albert I in 1910. Dedicated to the study of sea sciences, it took
11 years to build the impressive museum that sits on top of an 85meter cliff. Inside you will discover an amazing collection of marine
life, and you will be seduced by the numerous aquariums filled with
colorful fish.
In the afternoon drive on to the perched, medieval village of Eze
that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. The fortified castle’s ruins,
sitting on a narrow, rocky peak, still crown this ancient village. The
untouched magic of the village will enchant you.
The beach in the "baie d'Eze" is easily accessible and is shaded by
pine-trees that grow down almost to the water's edge. Perched on the
top of an imposing, superb cliff, the village, with its light ochre church,
can be seen from afar. To reach the entrance, take the small, rocky
path and admire the splendid view of the gardens that surround the
Château de la Chèvre d'Or. Once inside, you will discover a small,
charming Provencal village, filled with colorful window boxes
and offering a panoramic view of the coastline.
You will be seduced by the marvels of Eze: Small, narrow roads,
archways and superbly restored stone houses, shady squares and
refreshing ancient fountains. The village is so beautiful, you will
think that you have stumbled onto a movie set!
The numerous artisans’ boutiques are hard to resist. Some of them
resemble tiny caves dug into the rocky hillside. The streets of this
medieval village were witness to its historic past. The two lookout
towers at the entrance, the doorway and the gunboat are all listed as
historic monuments.
5:00 pm: Return to Nice at the end of the afternoon.
Your licensed guide-driver: Isabelle
I have been working as a guide in the region for 20 years.
I live up in the mountains 20 km north of Menton, in Sospel.
I am keen of art, architecture, and all kind of histories….
I am fond of sharing my discoveries and I quite enjoy driving too.
September 3: Nice & Grasse
9:00 am: Meet your English-speaking licensed guide-driver and enjoy
a panoramic tour of Nice.
Everything is emphasized in Nice; the bright sunlight makes the
colors flash. The green pines happily rub shoulders with the blue of
the Mediterranean Sea and that of the sky. In this natural, rocky
setting, the sun highlights the yellow shades of flowers and the ochrecolored houses. It is easy to see why the Côte d’Azur fascinates
so many people. Many of the artists, painters, writers, sculptors and
musicians who contributed to the city’s fame, have museums here
dedicated to their works.
You will view the luxurious Belle Époque-style residences,
including the fabulous Négresco palace that is built on the sea front.
The Négresco, whose dome can be admired from the Promenade des
Anglais, is the finest example of Belle Époque architecture. Visit the
Russian Church (not available on Sunday mornings).
Enjoy a walking tour of the old town. The old town’s soul and history
are reflected in the narrow streets and alleys that curve, in an irregular
fashion, among old buildings and red-tiled roofs. The streets, with
names that evoke ancient guilds, such as “goldsmith” or “bankers,” are
full of boutiques and shoppers.
In the morning, the Cours Saleya has daily flower and food markets.
There are scores of stands, and you will find everything from
professional merchants with their well-displayed wares to farmers that
offer their fresh produce and live fowl on folding tables. Low buildings
border the length of Cours Saleya, separating it from the sea.
Give your taste buds a new experience and enjoy some socca with a
glass of wine. Socca is a local specialty made from chickpea flour, and
a trip to Nice would not be complete without having tasted it!
Enjoy lunch at leisure in a typical restaurant. We suggest the
restaurant “Le Safari.” It is in a prime location on the Cours Saleya
with a lovely view of the market stalls. The menu is diversified, with
local specialties, pasta, seafood, meat and pizza.
In the afternoon, continue on to Grasse to see the old city and the
museums.
You can discover the old city on your own just by walking about the
shaded streets and enjoying the architectural treasures as you come
across them. You will be delighted by the charm of the old squares,
the outdoor markets, the fountains and the winding streets.
Grasse is the foremost city in the world for perfumes. It produces
over two-thirds of France's natural aromas (for perfume and food
flavorings). The industry’s turnover is more than 600 million euros per
year.
Grasse's particular microclimate encouraged the flower farming
industry. It is warm and far enough inland to be sheltered from the
salty air. The Moors brought jasmine, a key ingredient to many
perfumes, to the South of France in the 16th century. Grasse harvests
twenty-seven tons of jasmine each year.
You will find perfume museums and factories to visit, such as
Molinard.
For a long time, Molinard worked with Baccarat and René Lalique,
who widely contributed to the House's reputation for the sober, yet
elegant, scent bottles of their first "soliflore" perfumes (jasmine, rose,
and violet). You can visit the soap room and the distillery.
Through the window, you will see the packaging team. They still
label and prepare the pumps and lids by hand. It is surprising to think
that such a famous house, that exports worldwide, still makes its
products manually. Molinard knew how to conquer international
markets by preserving traditional manufacturing.
You can also admire this ancient oil mill which, in 1900, was
transformed in order to crush hard raw materials such as rosewood,
sandalwood or certain flower roots.
The showroom, relating the history of Provence, will impress you. It
is an optical and olfactory pleasure to visit, with a splendid furniture
collection (XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries) and lovely, delicate
fragrances that float in the air.
