But to us, state borders are arbitrary. They don’t mean a thing to a grape grower and a wine maker. They just got in the way of our region, so we ignored them. We have it in common where it matters – amazing climate, long growing seasons, beautiful soil, ideal topography. We’d call it terroir if we were French…but we’re not. That said, would you like to see something interesting? Have a look at the map of Bordeaux, France: Turned upside down, it looks exactly like us! Not a coincidence. Their climate, soil, topography… almost exactly like ours. They are a wine region in France making great vintage wines along the east side of the Atlantic Ocean. It is particularly so at dusk, as you leave Penn’s Place coffee shop and gallery and look to the right. The street lamps start to glow and the sky over the Delaware River – which is just at the end of the street – is warming into oranges and deeper blues. Yeah, you could stir up some trouble in a place like this. September 19, 2013 was the first day we met in Old New Castle. The idea was not terribly original – take six or seven wine trails, all of which were operating in relative isolation and independent from one another, and bring them together. Why? Because that is how every great wine region starts. That is what they did in California in the 1960’s. They started as a few small wine trails interspersed among farms and a few sleepy towns. Just like we are now. Same with the Finger Lakes. 15 years ago they were just like us. And their region is almost exactly the same size as ours. IES Delaware OLD NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE IS A PRETTY COOL PLACE TO START A REVOLUTION. IT JUST FEELS RIGHT.
