Taking part will be the Keystone Region MG Club, the British Car Club of the Lehigh Valley, and the British Car Club of Northeast Pennsylvania. The three clubs take turns hosting and organizing the rally each summer. The rally will start at Mueller’s Too Country Store and Restaurant, 3205 S. Delaware Drive, which is Route 611, south of Easton and north of Riegelsville. The owner of Mueller’s has enthusiastically offered to clear one side of the parking lot completely for our cars for that morning. She has also donated five prizes (gift certificates for the store and diner, T-shirts etc.) and will make sure we are well taken care of before the rally starts. The rally is rain or shine – and feel free to bring your “other” car if necessary. All are welcome! We encourage everyone to arrive by 9:30 to 10 a.m. and thank our hosts at Mueller’s by having breakfast or at least a cup of coffee before the rally begins. Mueller’s will be advertising our presence, so this may turn out some local spectators to watch the cars as well. The rally itself starts at 11 a.m. with cars leaving at one-minute intervals. We will cruise for a total of about 50 miles, which will take approximately two hours, ending up at Terry and Pat Allen’s house in Kintnersville. Instructions for the rally will include emergency phone numbers and destination address for those who may get lost on the beautiful winding roads. Restroom locations will also be noted. The picnic will start at about 1 p.m., and those not interested in the rally or not being able to make the rally are invited to just come for the picnic, which will feature Terry’s famous shepherd’s pie, salads, side dishes, beer and soft drinks. If you wish to bring a dessert or side dish, it would be more than welcome. Contact Terry or Pat at 610-972-3061 for information and directions. 2 • MG Gazette • July 2011 The Steering Column . . . By Dick Horn Lots of projects out there Hi, everyone! Boy, oh boy is it ever hot! But hey, this is what we’ve been waiting for all winter, so no complaining! The three club road rally is coming up this weekend, along with the picnic at Terry & Pat Allens’ home afterward, and if it’s like anything in past it should be a great time. The road rally will begin on Sunday morning, details on the first page, with the picnic following at the Allens’ home. (You are welcome to come just for the picnic, if you can’t make the rally.) I know a few of you have been curious as to how things are going with the hit-and-run accident we had with the black MGA, as to how the insurance company is handling things. Well, the accident happened on Memorial Day, and they have sent a check for the damage that their adjuster sent in ... but the amount was only half of what the amount needed to fix the car came to. It seems the adjuster left a few things out, and as of this date he has quit their company and they are suppose to be sending someone else to do another estimate! So, more than a month has gone by and we’re still waiting! Founded in 1977 The Keystone Region MG Club, Inc. is a club affiliated with both the North American MGA Register and the North American MGB Register. The club meets on the third Tuesday of most months. New members and guests are always welcome. Club information available online at www.keystonemg.com The Keystone Region MG Club, Inc., is incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is a non-profit organization run solely by volunteers to promote interest in and help foster the preservation of MGs and other British motor cars. Membership is open to all, and there is no need to own a British car to join. The club newsletter “MG Gazette” is published every month except January. I’m sure a lot of you have been doing projects on your LBCs to keep them up and running. Recently Bill Page, Arch Kunkle, Bill Webb and myself installed a windshield on Bill Webb’s MGB. It took a little bit of time, but we managed to “git-her done.” It only took about a quart of water each, since we were a “little warm.” Bob Pilat has been busy working on his MGA. He got the car back from the painter and is a little frustrated too, but with the help of Marty Chamberlain, Ed Haas and myself, Bob got the body back on the frame and the car is starting to come together and look like an “A.” Hang in there, Bob! Ed Haas is busy on his “B.” After getting it painted and all “spiffed up,” it’s coming back together and I’m sure will look great. Go, Ed ! So you see, these are just a couple of people that I can think of that have been working on their cars. If you or someone else has a project going, let me know! We will have our monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 19 at Gregory’s Steakhouse, as usual. Dick Cheers! I started my drive to the park at around 6:15 a.m. I put up the road signs on the way down to Hellertown and I noticed that I had to use my wipers to demist the windshield of my MGB/GT. I knew it was not going to be a great morning. We talked briefly about scaling things back for the day. We decided against that idea and went ahead with our plans for another great British Motorcar Gathering. All of our wonderful volunteers showed up exactly on schedule and ready to go. The Hellertown Borough had fixed certain areas of the show field that we identified as problems a few weeks earlier during our park walk through. The park had never looked better. The cars began to arrive shortly after 9 a.m. They came in slowly at first and then at a slightly faster pace. We remarked that there many cars from New York and New Jersey. The sun, however, never did break through the clouds. We also heard that some of the participants had started out in rain. That is never a good sign for a British car show. BILL WEBB Shortly after I arrived at the park, co-chairman Terry Allen pulled in with his truck and trailer. His MG TC was warm and dry inside of the trailer. Mike Hoinowksi of Pottstown, with his 1962 Triumph Herald which won the “Other Triumph” class as well as “Best of Show” honors. prizes and our friends at Castrol sent us a great number of items. Working with Terry and with all of the club members is a real joy. It is a pleasure because everyone is so willing to help. For some members the day of the show can be a very long day. Many members drive some distance to the park and then work from the set up period beginning at 7 a.m. until closing. We owe them a debt of gratitude. It takes a lot of our membership to produce one of the best British car shows in the Northeast. We want everyone to stay healthy, because in just six months we need to begin plans for British Motorcar Gathering Number 19. By the time all was said and done, we had 120 cars on the field. This was far below other years, when we’ve topped 200 cars. Everyone who did come to the show had a great time. The honor roll is listed below, with a big thank you to all. After some rain in the early hours of the morning, we were rain-free all day. Bill Miers Terry Allen - Co-chairman Leon Morgan Ken and Cindy Beck The day progressed smoothly from start to finish. We were Dennis and Ann Marie Nash Tom Brobst and Abbie Ullnot swamped with cars, but we had a good group of spectaBill Page nick tors. This year we had sponsors for 17 of our 22 classes. We Bob and Penny Pilat Bob Brown are grateful to our sponsors and we recognized them several Noel Peters Marty and Marybeth times through out the day. Sunny Sonnenrein Richard Horn You can never tell what group of cars will show up in mass Bob Van Syckle Myra Jones in any given year. This year, we seemed to have a greater Bill Webb Arch Kunkle number of MG Midgets than most previous shows. We had Gerry Kunkle some great door prizes this year. XK’s Unlimited from California continues to give us some very special Jaguar door The list of all of the class winners is on the next page. 4 • MG Gazette • July 2011 18th Annual British Motorcar Gathering List of Winners June 12, 2011 CLASS A - He called a couple of years ago to tell us he had been at a meeting with representatives from the North American Council of MG Registers. This is an organization composed of representatives from the North American MMM Register, the New England MGT Register, The North American MGA Register, The North American MGB Register, and the North American MGC Register. They hold a meet for all MGs every five years. When he told us that they were planning to hold the 2011 International MG event in the Reno-Tahoe area, it was a given that we would attend. MGs of all types parade through the arch in Reno at the completion of the “Rallye to Reno,” which traversed the country on Route 50 from Ocean City, Md. We drove our MG TF to the first allMG gathering in Indianapolis, and trailered it to the last one in Gatlinburg, Tenn., in 2006. We considered driving to Reno with the “Rallye to Reno” group on historic Route 50, but it soon became apparent that while the TF would probably make it, I definitely would not. That left trailering as the only option. We had a very nice lightweight trailer which workeds well with our pickup truck. Unfortunately, it was an open trailer and provided no protection for the car. We decided an enclosed trailer would be better for a long trip. (And we did encounter some major rain on the way home!) We found one that fit our needs, fully enclosed, lightweight, all alloy construction, and only 500 pounds heavier than our open trailer. loaded our MG TC in our new trailer and set off for Reno. We made a successful trial run to the GoF at Laconia. N.H. On June 4 we Our choice for a route was easy: Get on Interstate 80 about 10 miles from home If a regular Mini isn’t small enough for you ... check out “Mini Ha Ha,” a functioning 1961 Austin Mini shortened by 2 feet, 7 inches, with the driver sitting on what used to be the back seat. On display at the National Automobile Museum in Reno. and exit in Reno, about four blocks from our son’s home. The actual drive took about five and a half days, and we arrived safely on Thursday, June 9 after a very pleasant and leisurely drive MG Gazette • July 2011 • 7 across our beautiful country. Wyoming was especially gorgeous with snow on the mountains and lush green vegetation at lower levels. The opening event for MG 2011 was registration at the Silver Legacy Hotel and Casino on Monday. The first person we encountered was Brenda Murphy from the New Jersey MGT Register. She and husband Keith had driven with the Rallye to Reno group. We registered and then spent some time meeting friends and checking out all the vendors. On Monday evening there was a Welcome Reception at the National Automobile Museum where we met other NEMGTR friends. After the meal we were free to wander through the museum and enjoy the beautiful cars on display. YES! There is a MG TC in the collection! In the top photo, a 1929 M-Type, purported to be the first MG imported by a dealer to the United States. Just one of a number of interesting early cars at the MG2011 show, as seen in the photo below. The weather was delightfult: mid 70s, dry, and not a cloud in the sky. On Tuesday we watched the NEMGTR/ GoF West Funkhana. From there we joined two couples for a drive up to Virginia City. It is a short drive on a twisty road from Reno, but involves a climb to an altitude of about 6500 feet. In the TC this means third gear all the way up (and most of the way down). Virginia City was the site of the big silver strikes back in the 1860s. At the peak its population reached over 100,000 with many living in tents or other crude shelters. It is said that silver from Virginia City helped finance the Union cause during the Civil War. It is now a tourist attraction, and enjoys a small year-round population. Tuesday evening was Register Night and we attended the dinner for the NEMGTR/GoF West. It was an opportunity to meet and greet T people from all over and to see a presentation by the GoF West group on next year’s event, which sounds fabulous! Even though we were from the “other coast,” we were graciously welcomed by the GoF West members. Wednesday was devoted to tours and a rally. Having been to most of the tour destinations at one time or another, we opted to visit some other local attractions and meet and greet a few MGers at the Silver Legacy. Shirley’s brother and his wife came up from San Francisco to take in the car show on Thursday and we had a chance to catch up with our west coast family. That evening we all went to dinner at Louie’s Basque restaurant. (You must eat Basque food at least once in northern Nevada!) There were seven of us seated at a table for eight so the waitress added another man because, as she said, “he is also an MG person.” Indeed he was and from Oregon. The Continued on Page 8 8 • MG Gazette • July 2011 Continued from Page 7 food was marvelous and a good time was had by all. The car show at Rancho San Rafael Park just outside of town took place on Thursday. There were more than 600 cars on display, ranging from a couple of 1929 M Types to a modern MG F from Canada. There were two beautiful SA Sedans, a TA Tickford, several Y sedans and even an RV8, also from Canada. Also on display were an MGA (?) with a huge blown V8 (see photo next page), close to 100 T Types and more As, Bs, and Cs than I could count. Just walking around to see all of the cars took several hours. Above: MG expert John Twist gives some technical advice to a California TD owner. Since I have always had a love for MGC GTs I had to check out each one. I even found one with air conditioning! One event at the car show was the always entertaining “rocker cover races.” This drew a large crowd and people were amazed at the lengths to which some of us go to compete! The “grand finale” took place on Thursday evening with the banquet and awards ceremony. Each Register had a preliminary gathering where all but the first-place awards were presented. We then all gathered at the Reno Events Center for the nanquet and the presentation of first place awards as well as other personal awards. I am not sure how many people were in CHARLES & KIM de BOURBON Since we had been to two similar events, I had some idea what to expect but I must say that this was the finest collection of MGs I have ever seen in one place. There were a few “works in progress” cars on display but overall the quality and condition of the cars was outstanding. Perhaps the best part was the reaction of the younger people who just happened by. I am sure that at least some of them “caught the bug” and will eventually end up with an MG. Left: A fairly ridiculous— yet fascinating — MGA with a humongous supercharged V8 engine. attendance but I think there were perhaps 85 tables with 10 people at each table. The buffet meal was provided a variety of scrumptious dishes and everyone was served within a reasonable time. Tim Suddard, publisher of Classic Motorsports, was the guest speaker and very interesting ,and the presentation of awards went off without a hitch. The entire schedule of events provided “something for everyone.” Bus tours to Lake Tahoe, Carson City, and Virginia City were popular. Different Registers offered tours, rallies, socials/s meals for their members. Several tech sessions on a variety of subjects were popular. Different evening entertainments were there for the taking. There was an “auto-cross”/racing event scheduled at the racetrack in Fernley, about 40 miles east of Reno. The only sad thing was ‑ you couldn’t do it all! Most people started home on Friday, and several from the Rallye to Reno group motored on to San Francisco to make theirs a true “ocean to ocean” journey. We chose to stay around for the Reno Rodeo Parade on Saturday so we could see both of our grandsons march with their school band. We left Reno on Sunday morning June 19, and arrived home the following Saturday about noon after another trouble-free drive. Total miles covered: almost 5,600. Would we do it again? ABSOLUTELY! MG Gazette • July 2011 • 9 Keystone Club Update By Kim de Bourbon Secretary, Keystone Region MG Club The club met June 21, 2011 at Gregory’s Steakhouse in Allentown, with another great showing of the membership. Treasurer’s report: Bill Page reports our current membership is 71. Regalia sales at Carlisle and Hellertown provided $512 in revenue, and an increase in the number of class sponsors (from five to 17) at Hellertown also helped boost the club coffers. Income from the show as a whole was down because of the unfavorable early morning weather, which kept many people away. This affected not only day-of-show car registrations, but spectactor admissions and raffle ticket sales as well. Still we had 141 paid registrations, Bill reported, with 85 of those paid in advance. That compares to 201 cars registered last year, with 110 pre-registered. There was quite a bit of discussion on whether or not it is time to increase the show registration fee, which remains at $10 for pre-registration and $15 at the gate. It was noted that most other shows are now charging $20 or $25 for registration fees. While some expressed a desire to keep the price low, which helps keep us popular, others felt we could face a real financial hit if we ever got totally washed out. Others felt maybe a bigger differential between the pre-registration fee and day-of-show fee might help drive pre-registrations, which are non-refundable and “insurance” against a poor weather day. It was decided that the club will definitely bring this up for discussion at the end of the year or by the first show meeting of next year, with a decision to be made before fliers are printed. Show report: Mike Jones thanked everyone who volunteered at the show, which made it great despite the relatively low turnout of cars. (120 on the field.) Next year will be the club’s 19th annual show, and someone mentioned we should start thinking about something special to do in 2013, when we will have our 20th anniversary show. Regalia shop online: Marty Chamberlain passed around a mug and cap that he bought from our new online regalia store. All agreed they were of good quality, with excellent reproduction of the club logo. The Regalia store is located in the Club Info section at www. keystonemg.com. (Look for the Club Regalia link in the righthand column.) Members are encourage to go to the site and see all the shirts, hats, jackets and accessories now available for purchase, with a variety of colors and sizes for apparel. All orders are “custom,” in that the club logo is embroidered or printed on the item you choose after you order it, thereby eliminating the need for the club to invest in a supply of items to sell. NOTE: The OFFICIAL club jacket with embroidered patch and club member’s name remains the blue one that is available ONLY through Dick Horn. (Get yours now, in time for the fall driving season! The order form is in this newsletter.) Upcoming events: The rest of the meeting was spent discussing events coming up. In July, there is the TVR club’s “Brits on the Delaware” show on Saturday, July 16 at Johnny Mac’s American Grill on Route 611 in Kintnersville, followed by the British Car Club Rally on Sunday, July 17, which will take off from Mueller’s Too north of Riegelsville. (Details on first page.) The club will caravan to the British Car Club of Northeast Pennsylvania show on Sunday, July 24, departing from the Snydersville Diner at 8 p.m. There will be a planning meeting on Saturday, July 16 , 6 p.m., at Marty & Marybeth Chamberlain’s for those taking part in the British Marque Car Club News Triathlon in Maine this August. There is STILL TIME to sign up, but you need to get your registration into the British Marque ASAP. The group plans to leave on Tuesday, Aug. 23 and return on Monday, Aug. 29. Robert Van Syckle is planning a cruise on Saturday, July 30, up Skyline Drive to the Pagadoa in Reading, followed by a meal at Union Jack’s in Maxatawny.
