••• LAST CALL TO PAY DUES FOR 2009 ••• MG Gazette Volume 17 Issue 1 w w w.keyston e mg .com February/March 2009 Show season Bright blue sky and green grass in February tell you this show wasn’t held in the Northeast. (The palm trees are a clue also!) Keystone Region MG Club members Jim and Shirley Mink, who winter in Arizona, attended the Tucson British Car Register show on Feb. 28, 2009, and were nice enough to send some photos back. (Jim Mink photo) Bowling party and club meeting set for March 15 Break up the winter doldrums with a completely different kind of club event: The Keystone Region MG Club will have a bowling party on Sunday, March 15. Program coordinator Bob Pilat has made the arrangements at Hampton Lanes in Northampton. Bowling will run from 4 to 6 p.m., following by a club meeting from 6-7 p.m. in a private meeting room. Members can bowl two games for a total of just $7, which includes shoe and ball rental. Please plan to arrive no later than 3:45 p.m. so we can all get on the lanes promptly. The club will provide chicken wings and drinks. Food and drinks will also be available at the Hampton Lanes’ full-service lounge. If it’s been years since you’ve bowled ... well, don’t worry about it. This will be a fun afternoon for all. You don’t even need to know how to keep score – these days the lanes do the scoring for you. If you don’t want to bowl, you are still welcome to come watch. Or just show up for the meeting at 6 p.m. Hampton Lanes is at 326 Main St. in Northampton. Please RSVP to Bob & Penny Pilat at (610) 262-2646 if you plan to bowl, so they know how many lanes to reserve. • MG Gazette • February/March 2009 The Steering Column . . . By Dick Horn Welcome to the club’s new year! Greetings, everyone ! The winter weather is just about gone, except for the snowstorm that always seems to hit at the end of March, so we’ll see . The club’s last meeting at Gregory’s Steakhouse seemed to be favorable, all who were there enjoyed the food and the room given over to us was arranged nicely for our meeting so I think we’ll most likely meet there again in April. This month’s meeting will be held right after the bowling meet on Sunday, March 15, at Hampton Lanes. (See Pg. 1.) This past weekend some of the members got the experience of removing the engine from Ed Haas’ MGB. Ed had the good sense of supplying doughnuts and coffee to get us to his garage and it worked! The four souls who braved the grease and oil on their doughnuts were Marty Chamberlain, Terry Allen, Bob Pilat and yours truly. (I braved the most... pictures will prove it!) Ed had done most of the ancillary removals the day before so that when the time came to actually get the engine out it only took 30 minutes, if that. (Hardly had time to get the doughnut down!) This year we will again have a tent at Carlisle along with the Founded in 1977 The Keystone Region MG Club, Inc. is a club affiliated with both the North American MGA Register and the North American MGB Register. The club meets on the third Tuesday of most months. New members and guests are always welcome. Club information available online at www.keystonemg.com The Keystone Region MG Club, Inc., is incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is a non-profit organization run solely by volunteers to promote interest in and help foster the preservation of MGs and other British motor cars. Membership is open to all, and there is no need to own a British car to join. The club newsletter “MG Gazette” is published every month except January. NAMGBR, and Kim and Charles de Bourbon have “again” volunteered to man it The club will supply hot dogs and burgers on Saturday, May 15, so please plan to attend and show your support. I’d also like to thank all those who made the annual dinner at the BarnHouse Restaurant such a success (again!). The food was excellent as were the surroundings and I believe all had a good time. We had such an event-filled year last year that I’m hoping we can meet it or even better it, but it’s going to take some doing, so if you have an idea for a club function let it out! At the present time we have Mike Jones and Terry Allen co-chairing the Hellertown show and I know they will be looking for volunteers to help so step up to the plate and take a swing! The British Marque Car Club News Triathalon will be in western Massachusetts this August and we have a few couples already signed up for it. The cost is $595 for a two-person team for the weekend, which includes a two-night stay at Jiminy Peak Resort, all meals, all events and a nice shirt. It’s limited to the first 100 cars, so you are advised to get your reservations in early. (All I need to do is break the glass.) I am converting my 1967 MGB from positive earth to negative ground (earth). Not too hard – change from two 6V batteries to one 12V, change to an alternator, replace the fuel pump, etc. But one area was not so easy - the tachometer. Now one side is up slightly, and carefully going around gets the glass out. Phew! The first step is to take off the chrome ring. Rotate it about 30 degrees so that the six tabs on the back of the ring lineup with slots in the body. Ha ha. Grab the ring in one hand and the body of the tach in the other and twist! Nothing. Try again. Nothing. OK, use a small screwdriver and gently pry the side of the ring away from the body - without distorting it. No go. Pry around the ring again. No go. Go around again, a bit more aggressive. No go. Break out the tool for loosening oil filters and wrap the rubber band tightly around the chrome ring, grab the body and twist. No go. No way to use a vice or clamp on the body without seriously distorting it. Hum. Take the small screwdriver, dip it into WD-40 and put very small drops between the body and the ring. Worry a bit about the WD-40 seeping into the dial mechanism and destroying it. Wrap the rubber band around the ring, grab the body and twist. No go. Hmmm, now what. More WD-40 dabbed on, more pushing the ring away from the body. IT MOVED, I think. Yes, it did, some more twists and off it came. Now the glass has to come out. It doesn’t. There is a very narrow space between the edge of the glass and a metal channel. Try to pry it out with the small screwdriver. Too big, it only produces small chips on the edge of the glass. Now what? An X-Acto knife fits into the gap and can be run around the circumference several times. Looks promising. Be brave! Try to pry up an edge - nope. Take out the two screws in the back and slide the tach mechanism out of the body. But it does not come out! There is a round bezel inside the body (it held the glass in place) with an inside diameter smaller than the dial. How do you get a grip on it to pull it out without bending it? The top of it is bent at 90 degrees to fit over the top of the tach body - very tightly. Well, the X-Acto knife worked again by getting it in the non-existent opening and working it around the perimeter. Will it come out? Will it bend? How much is a new tach? It did come out, and now the tach mechanism comes out (careful, don’t bend the needle). Maybe this is going to work. The whole point of getting the tach out of the body is to swap a resistor and a wire connection inside the tach. Should be easy since I am an old expert at soldering. Did it in the Navy fixing radar and communication equipment on a destroyer (before transistors and just swapping circuit boards to fix equipment). Did it again as a field engineer making changes to missile guidance systems onboard ships and at Navy Yards (the systems still using tubes, not chips). The resistor lead has lots of solder on the terminal so I cannot see how it is mechanically attached. But melting the solder and quick flick of the wrist and most of the solder flies off and I can see how the resistors lead is attached. The X-Acto knife works again to move a metal strip when the solder is hot. The other connection is easy - I do not believe it - something is easy! Time to put it back together. No problem until it is time to put the chrome ring back on. There is a gasket under the ring that had deteriorated (this is what made the ring so hard to Continued on Page • MG Gazette • February/March 2009 Tachometer adventure ........... less than 50 degrees in the garage) or on the floor pan. But with a steady hand it was assembled. Continued from Page remove). Part of it had turned to dust. So where do you get one? You don’t. Suppliers have the gasket that goes outside the tach over the body but no internal components. So, does it work? Well, the engine and transmission are sitting on the floor of the garage and it may a year until the car is ready to receive them. Does the tach work? Time will tell. I hope so. The internet offered a solution - use plumbers’ putty to form a seal. Well, the first container that I had was dried out and I do not want to go out to get another one. But there is another one on the shelf! I hope this works since this is what keeps the moisture out of the tach from both what comes down the dash onto the top of the tach and what gets onto the glass. And some people do not understand the joy of working on MGs. With that done and the tach mounted in the dash, the task is just cutting the leads to a plastic piece through which a wire from the wiring harness loops, reversing the cut leads, resoldering, and attaching the plastic piece to the back of the tach. Of course, that means laying on my back under the dash with my head where the pedals usually are, a hot shop light by my head and the tiny lock washer and nut held over my body where a slip through my fingers means trying to find the lockwasher or the nut in my jacket, sweatshirt, shirt (it is 10/08-10/09 We Know British Cars! The Blackwells send greetings every year, with pictures of their MG family: A 1998 MGF and a 1976 MGB GT. Greetings from N.Z. Editor’s Note: Many club members will remember the lunch we had with the Blackwell family from New Zealand in November 2004, when the MG-loving Kiwis were visiting the area and discovered there was an MG club nearby. Ron Blackwell continues to get in touch and send photos. Here is a note he emailed on 12/11/08: Seasons Greetings from your New Zealand members here in Nelson. We are heading into our southern hemisphere Christmas, which means hot dry days just perfect for MG driving. I have included some photos of our 1976 BGT and of the 1998 MGF Abingdon that we also own. The latter was a special run of 500 cars in non-metallic British racing green, with full leather seats in fawn, woodgrain dashboard, air conditioning, and a fawn/tan soft top. We have a black factory hardtop for it as well. Best wishes to you all for the Festive Season Ron, Jacqui, and Andrew Blackwell 95 Kawai Street Nelson 7010 New Zealand Email: [email protected] MG Gazette • February/March 2009 • Keystone Club Update By Kim de Bourbon Keystone Region MG secretary The Keystone Region MG Club held its first meeting of the new year on Feb. 17 at Gregory’s Steakhouse on Schoenersville Road in Allentown, a new location. We had an excellent turnout of members, and all agreed the private room and food service served the club well. Treasurer’s report: Bill Page reported that we ended the year with 90 members, and to date have renewals for 41. He reminded the club that 2009 dues MUST BE PAID by the March meeting in order to be on the subscription list for the British Marque Car Club News. He reported that the club spent $275 on the annual banquet, subsidizing costs of $7.45 per person attending. Car show committee: Mike Jones reported that about 10 people attended the first meeting to plan the 2009 British Motorcar Gathering, which will be held June 14. The group talked over some new ideas for the annual show, and Mike noted that we will have a contract with Kasey Lynn’s to provide the food again this year. The big discussion topic, he noted, is how to address the problem of spectator parking. We had a great turnout last year of people just coming to see the show, but the lot and field at the entrance to the park are limited. He checked into hiring a shuttle bus or van, but that would cost us about $350. He also checked with our insurance carrier about the ramifications of having a club member shuttle people back and forth from a parking lot in a van, but that isn’t possible from an insurance perspective. Jacket committee: Marty Chamberlain reported that the jacket committee as yet has nothing to report, but is planning to have a meeting to come up with recommendations for a club jacket. Donation committee: Mike Jones reported that the committee collected guidelines that other organizations use to determine worthiness of a charity, but they haven’t formalized anything yet. The goal of this committee is to come up with recommendations for how the club determines what charitable organizations to contribute to, and how much to give. America on Wheels Museum: Dick Horn reported that we have been invited to have an event or cruise at the new America on Wheels Museum in Allentown. They are of- fering us discounted admission in conjunction with having an event there on a Friday evening or Saturday or Sunday morning or afternoon. Members seemed agreeable to the idea, but no date was suggested. Carlisle tent: The club decided to once again to have a cookout on the British car field at the Import-Kit/Replicar Nationals in Carlisle, which will be held this year on May 15-17. Kim de Bourbon noted that the North American MGB Register has again agreed to pay half of the $160 tent cost, in exchange for hanging the NAMGBR banner and distributing membership materials. In the absence of anyone else volunteering, Charles & Kim de Bourbon offered to again set up the tent and preparations for the club cookout on Saturday, May 16. Cruise to the Casino Theatre: Don & Karen Struckle have offered to host another club event at their movie theater/ malt shop in Mount Pocono, offering free movie and miniature golf. We are still determining a date for this. Triathlon VIII: The club is planning to take part in Triathlon VIII, the weekend event being hosted by the British Marque Car Club News on Aug. 28-20 in western Massachussetts. This is a fun weekend that features a rally, a hill climb and a wacky car show. The event is limited to 100 cars, so if you are interested, get your registration in now. A $50 deposit holds your spot. [See information on Page 4.] Upcoming events: Dick noted the dates of the first events of the year: Triumph Rescue in Bally will have an open house and tech Q&A on Saturday, March 28. The Philadelphia MG Club will have its annual flea market on Sunday, March 29. the Spring Brits on the Delaware show in Kintnersville will be Saturday, Apr. 18, and the Britfest ’09 show in Succasunna, N.J., will be held Saturday, May 2. Details available on the club’s online British Car Event Calendar. MG T Register – The New England MG T Register recognized the club with a published “thank you for our donation to Knudson-Churchill Scholarship Fund. Charles and Kim de Bourbon reported that the NEMGTR held its annual business meeting in Stroudsburg on Feb. 7, so they stopped in to say hello during the cocktail hour. The club also received a thank you from the Gia Nicole Angel Foundation for its contribution to last year’s British Reliability Run, which Terry Allen took part in. Continued on Page • MG Gazette • February/March 2009 Happy After Holiday The Keystone Region MG Club and the British Car Club of the Lehigh Valley combined forces again to enjoy a happy post-holiday dinner on Jan. 17, complete with the traditional mystery gift exchange. For the second year, the banquet was held at BarnHouse Village catering hall in Bath. This year we were situated in the main room with the main bar room at our disposal. We had a record turnout of 69 people attending: Twenty from the BCCLV, 33 from the Keystone club, and 16 who are members of both clubs. There was lots of food, with beef burgundy, chicken Marsala and baked ham prepared as the feature buffet entrees. Following the feast, the two club presidents made a few brief remarks, primarily thanking everyone for a great Continued from Page year and acknowledging the hard work of the club officers. Charles de Bourbon presented his latest video production, highlighting all the events of the year. Last but certainly not least, we held the Holiday Gift Exchange. As usual, the range of wrapped gifts brought for the exchange were wide-ranging in their interest and practicality. Among the offerings were quite a few bottles of beer and wine, a model car, a Monza exhaust tip, halogen work light, British pint glass, a Super Hero belt, a homemade knit cap, car wash kit, box of chocolates, carb adjustment kit, cooler bags, A-arm bushings, movie ticket coupon, yoga mat, MGB fan belt, trunk organizer, portable vacuum cleaner, tea gift set and E-Z bleeder. Keystone Club Update Bowling party & meeting: Bob Pilat has arranged for a club bowling part on Sunday, March 15, at Hampton Lanes in Northampton. The club will kick in for food. Bowling will cost $7 per person for two games, which includes shoe rental and ball. Bowling will be from 4 to 6 p.m. The club’s regular monthly meeting will follow from 6-7 p.m., in a private room. (Details on Pg. 1) Kitzhof Inn: Dick received a letter from this English pub and inn in West Dover, Vt., which offers British car clubs weekend events, including an English pub, traditional English breakfast, welcoming reception and dinners of roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, fish and chips or bangers and mash. The inn offered group packages for two-night stays. Members were interested, but probably not this year, when there is already a trip planned to the Triathlon in August. It was mentioned this would be a good event to plan for 2010. Encounter 2009: Ken Beck reported that the national Austin-Healey Sports & Touring Club meet will be held Aug. 6-9 at Pocono Manor. The agenda and registration form are on the website. Lord of the Manor: Charles de Bourbon reported that he and Kim will head up another “Lord of the Manor” British car show in conjunction with the Austin-Healey Encounter. The Healeys will have their own show on the same field, at the same time. The date for the “Lord of the Manor” show will be Saturday, Aug. 8. Paint wheels: Arch Kunkle mentioned he has four wire wheels with tires, free for the taking because they are not road-worthy ... Only good for taking your car to get painted. Those attending: Terry Allen, Tony Altieri, Ken & Cindy Beck, Jerry & Patsy Betz, Marty & Marybeth Chamberlain, Charles & Kim de Bourbon, Art & Margie Edinger, Ed Haas, Dick Horn, Mike Jones, Arch Kunkle, Bill Page, Bob Pilat, Victor Rodriguez,Ken Saltern, Dennis Silance, and Bill Webb. MG Gazette • February/March 2009 • They just don’t make oil like they used too By Dennis Silance Keystone Region MG Club In case you haven’t heard by now, automotive manufacturers have had to pressure their oil suppliers to remove a substance from engine oils, which is vital to our classic cars, in order to meet with emission reduction standards doled out in the U.S. by the EPA. That substance, specifically zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP), had been added to engine oils for more than 60 years to act as an antiwear protectant on the sliding metalto-metal cam interface. ZDDP protects by creating a film that acts as a sacrificial wear surface on the base metal of cams and flat lifter contact points in response to the extreme pressure and heat at the contact point. So, why did they have to remove it? Unfortunately, zinc and phosphorus from ZDDP can be found in small amounts in the exhaust gas of an engine depending on the amount of oil that is consumed in combustion. Herein lies the problem. It seems these elements can shorten the service life of a catalytic converter, ultimately increasing emissions at the tailpipe. And that my friends, is a big no-no. As a result of the EPA mandate, the ZDDP level in the engine oil we buy for our Little British cars (and all cars) has been declining since the mid 1990s. Newer cars, with their roller lifters won’t miss this additive but according to the SAE tech bulletin #770087, operation of a flat-tappet engine (that’s us) without adequate additives such as ZDDP, quickly leads to lifter foot scuffing and cam lobe wear. According to the bulletin, once cam wear reaches 0.020-inches, “subsequent wear is usually rapid and catastrophic.” Today, ZDDP has been removed from practically all automotive engine oils, rendering them unsuitable for use with older engines with non-roller lifters. There has been a lot of discussion on this subject over the past few years, some of it conflicting at best, but the fact remains that our cars need the protection of this vital lubricant in order to avoid major engine failure. Until the major oil companies step up to the plate and produce conventional engine oils specifically for the classic cars of our era, with the right amount of zinc and phosphorus, one of the best solutions seems to be using a product called ZDDPlus. It contains the proper amounts of ZDDP to give a 0.18 percent zinc and 0.13 percent phosphorus level, the amounts that were in our oil before it was removed, when a single 4 oz bottle is added to a normal 5-quart oil change. By using this ZDDP concentrate, it affords you total control over the characteristics of the oil in the engine by allowing you to use the full 5-quarts of high-grade oil of your choice. What I like best about it is, that it’s not one of those off-the-shelf, mystery solution additives, loaded with a bunch of other undesirable components that claim to cure everything from high oil consumption to increasing your engines horsepower to possibly growing hair on your head. ZDDPlus is a replacement for a missing oil component critical to our older cars, period. It was developed by engineers and automotive technicians by trade, who are classic car enthusiasts and dedicated to keeping our classic cars operational and running like new. To be fair, there are engine oils on the market with some levels of ZDDP, namely oils formulated for diesel engines and some racing oils. This may be true, but the problem there is the same as with other ‘additive’ products. Besides being formulated for specific engines, diesel and racing oils have different levels of the detergent package added or removed and may not even be available in the correct viscosity recommended for your classic car. I did find out that Castrol is producing a synthetic oil with ZDDP in it, Syntech 20W-50, which states “recommended for classic cars” on the front label, although I couldn’t find it on the shelf at either of the two auto stores I frequent, Napa and Advance Auto. The manager at Advance said he would look into stocking the product in the future. Continued on Page 10 10 • MG Gazette • February/March 2009 Oil ... Continued from Page 10 The response I received from Castrol’s consumer relations department, when inquiring into the levels of zinc and phosphorus contained in their Syntech 20W-50, was that they first, acknowledged “there are field issues associated with SM/GF-4 oil’s level of anti-wear in the classic car engines known as flat tappet cam engines”. SM/GF-4 are the industry’s most recent oil classification and “SM” calls for no more than 0.08 percent phosphorus in motor oils. They went on to recommend using their “Syntech 20W-50 for classic cars because it contains 0.12 or 1200ppm zinc.” That’s a bit lower than the 0.18 percent zinc you get with ZDDPlus, and they did not make mention of the amount of phosphorus in the oil. Synthetic oils are about double the price of mineral oil per quart and you’re still not getting the levels of ZDDP you were in the past. By using the ZDDPlus concentrate in addition to a modern, high quality conventional oil with the proper viscosity, your car will have the correct anti-wear protectant levels of the original oil for which their engines were designed. So, where do you buy this product? Moss Motors has it, as well as Jeff Zorn at Little British Car Company. Locally, our own Kenny Beck, of K&T Vintage Motors in Allentown, has it available at his shop and retails it for about $10, which is less than what Moss advertises. By the way, not only has Kenny made these tech sheets I’ve been referring to throughout this article available to me, but he has seen first-hand some of the damage to internal engine parts, namely camshafts, as a result of running these engines without the proper protection. In conclusion, classic car owners are left with a few choices if they want to provide their cars with proven protection for their flat tappet engine: Either use a modern specialty oil, which claims to have ZDDP levels at or near the levels in the past, OR use good quality, conventional, SM oils with the right viscosity for your car and add a 4 oz. bottle of ZDDPlus to the crank case the next time you change your oil. 2009 Calendar of Events Philadelphia MG Club ANNUAL FLEA MARKET Sunday, MARCH 25, 2007 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. 6904 Castor Ave., Philadelphia $10 per vending space Call: 267-241-9554 Email: [email protected] Web: www.philamg.com SPRING BRITS ON THE DELAWARE Saturday APRIL 18, 2009 10 a.m. to 4 pm American Grill, 9755 Easton Road (Route 611), Kintnersville Hosted by local TVR Club of North America. NOTE— Beginning with the new year, the MG Gazette will be distributed exclusively by email. Production and mailing costs of the printed version were almost exceeding the cost of club membership. So rather than increase the dues, we are following the lead of most other car clubs and switching to an all-electronic version (PDF.) for all members with an email address. In addition to saving the club money, there are several advantages: We get it to you quicker, and you see all the photographs in color. And you can print it out on your own printer at your leisure, if you’d like. Please make sure to include the email address you’d like the newsletter sent to, and make sure it is printed neatly.
