The Steering Column . . . By Dick Horn
Beware online dealings
Greetings!
Since this is the season for
keeping in touch with the IRS, I
thought that the “Greeting” was
appropriate. If you were drafted
into the service, you’ll know what I mean!
I’ll relate a little story about a recent episode I had concerning an ad that I submitted in the NAMGAR magazing
“MGA!,” which didn’t turn out so well for me. In working on
my MGA coupe, I find that I’m in need of some trim pieces
that go on the back window, and so I submitted a “Wanted”
ad asking for those parts in that magazine.
I received an e-mail shortly after, maybe a day or two after
the magazine was out, from a fellow in England who told me
he had those parts and if I was interested to get back to him,
which I did. In the next few days we e-mailed each other,
and I agreed to his price and pay through Western Union,
which rang a bell of warning but I figured that he was another MG nut answering my ad in NAMGAR and was honest!
After sending the money, I sent him an e-mail asking if he
had received it and to give me a tracking number. He replied
Founded in 1977

is a club affiliated with both
the North American MGA Register
and the North American MGB Register.
The club meets on the third Tuesday of most months.
New members and guests are always welcome.

The Keystone Region MG Club, Inc., is incorporated
under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
It is a non-profit organization run solely by volunteers
to promote interest in and help foster the preservation
of MGs and other British motor cars.
Membership is open to all, and there is no need to own
a British car to join. The club newsletter “MG Gazette”
is published every month except January.
a few days later saying he was sorry for not getting back and
that he did receive it and would send me a tracking number. That was the last I heard from him, I’ve sent him more
emails but no reply.
Why I’m relating this to you is to forewarn you to be careful
in any dealings you may have in ordering parts or anything
through dealing with people over the internet. I figured,
wrongly it turns out, that since the ad was being answered
through the NAMGAR magazine that the individual would
be honest and forthright, not realizing that anyone may have
seen the ad. So, be careful, although I don’t know what more
could have been done other than using PayPal; but if the
person is not involved with PayPal, then what?
Our next club meeting will be on Tuesday, April 19 at
Gregory’s Steakhouse, meeting to start at 7 p.m., but come
earlier and shoot the breeze with your fellow MG nuts! If you
have anything left over from our swap meet that you didn’t
sell and want to offer it to a “needy” fellow club member,
bring it along for the “green” table.
Hope to see you!

Keystone Club Update
By Kim de Bourbon
Secretary, Keystone Region MG Club
The club met again in March at Gregory’s Steakhouse in
Allentown, with a great attendance of 24 people. It’s nice to
see the room full of members, eager to talk about the year
ahead! Could be everyone is just sick of winter, and ready to
start thinking about getting their cars out on the road.
Online regalia sales: A great deal of the meeting was spent discussing the proposal to sign
up with the Fieldhouse on-demand regalia
fulfillment service, which was introduced by
Regalia Chairman Bob Pilat at the February
meeting.
As explained in the March issue of the
MG Gazette, this would enable us to offer
a greater range of items with our logo on it,
and we wouldn’t have to purchase any quantity of
items in advance OR keep them “in stock.”
Fieldhouse would handle all the sales through a website that
would be integrated with our own, selling items we choose
to sell “on demand” with our logo. (Meaning, when someone
orders an item, they print it with our logo and ship it out.
Nothing needs to be ordered in bulk ahead of time or kept in
stock.)
The cost to set this up is $99. Since it is an online store, there
is no sales tax, just shipping charges. We would provide the
club logo to the company, and they would then adjust it by
size to the particular product ordered.
There are many advantages to the club, primarily that we
would no longer have to keep an inventory of shirts and
sweatshirts that end up not being sold because they aren’t the
color or size a member wants.
The club voted unanimously to go ahead and sign up with
Fieldhouse. The regalia committee will select the items to be
offered, and when everything is set up, the online store will
be integrated with the club website.
Bob said he will do whatever it takes to liquidate the existing
stock of regalia, and add new products to what we have on
hand to sell at the Hellertown show in June.
Club president Dick Horn noted that the official club jacket
with embroidered patch and club member’s name is still
available, and will continue to be. (Get yours now, in time
for the driving season! Order form on next page.)
Hellertown show: Chairman Mike Jones noted that the
fliers for our June 12 show have been designed by Charles de
Bourbon and are back from the printer. Bill Webb will send
them out to our car show mailing list by the end of March,
and Charles and Kim de Bourbon will again get the fliers
into the registration packets of three shows held before ours:
Britfest, Cars of England at Oakbourne Mansion, and Red
Mill British Car Day.
Charles noted that he will again design a “collector’s edition” poster for the show. It was agreed to
make 20 copies of the poster, and sell them for
$20 each.
Mike also scheduled the park “walk
through” meeting for Thursday, May 26, and
the “bag stuffing party” for Tuesday, June 7,
at Mary and Marybeth Chamberlains’ home.
Upcoming events: The rest of the meeting was spent discussing events coming up this
spring and summer. Our annual cruise to the Casino
Theatre Entertainment Center in Mount Pocono will be Sunday, May 1, with free movie, popcorn, and miniature golf for
everyone. We also will probably have a club caravan to the
Britfest show in New Jersey on Saturday, May 7.
There was some discussion of the Carlisle Import show,
where the club will again rent a tent for a club cookout
staffed by Charles de Bourbon. [NOTE: Kim will have to be
at a conference that weekend, so anyone who would like to
help Charles with the setup, please let him know!)
The North American MGB Register will once again pitch
in for the cost of the tent, as we promote membership in
NAMGBR at Carlisle. And, for the first time, the MGs of
Baltimore club has asked to share the tent, and will pay one
third of the cost. Since the cost to the club will be less, we
have decided to go for a larger tent. Bill Page is waiting to
hear what the final cost of the 20x30 tent will be.
Robert Van Syckle said he will plan a cruise again this summer in the Berks County area, possibly involving a drive
up the Duryea Drive hillclimb route to the Pagoda in Reading, followed by a meal at Union Jack’s in Maxatawny. Stay
tuned for details.
Charles and Kim de Bourbon said that although they won’t
be able to help with the Hellertown show this year, because
they are going to MG2011 in Reno, they will host a picnic on
Saturday, June 25 following the Cars in the Gap car show in
Delaware Water Gap.

Dick Horn sent along these photos of
a recent “project day,” with he, Marty
Chamberlain and Bob Pilat helping out
with some work on Ed Haas’s MGB
LE.
Dick didn’t explain what work was
being done, other than to say master
welder Bob showing Marty some tricks
of the trade. Dick says the photo above
shows “master and apprentice.”

Club Update
Continued from Page 3
In July, the club will once again take a turn hosting the annual British Car Club Rally, held with the British Car Club
of the Lehigh Valley and the British Car Club of Northeast
Pennsylvania. The rally will be held Sunday, July 17 in upper
Bucks County, with Terry Allen as rallymaster.
Ken & Barbara Saltern will host a club picnic meeting on
August 16, and Marty & Marybeth Chamberlain will reprise
their popular Fun Run and picnic at their home on Sept. 17.
Dick reminded members that everyone is welcome to join
the club team that will be taking part in the British Marque
Car Club News Triathlon, which is being held Aug. 26-28 in
Northport, Maine.
So far, the club has about six couple going, but more are
welcome! The group will be leaving on Tuesday, Aug. 23 for
a leisurely trip north. See more information in the newsletter,
along with a registration form. The event is limited to 100
cars, so if you are interested in taking part in this fun event,
get your registration in soon.

Desert show
Jim & Shirley Mink adjourn to Arizona
each winter, giving them the chance
to attend British car shows all year
around.
Here are some shots from the “Wheels
of Britain” show in Phoenix on March
13, when most of us were buried in
snow.
Jim reports they had about 70 cars,
including seven MG TCs, two TAs, but
no TFs, plus lots of other MGs, Jaguars
and even a number of Jensens. “Of
course, it was a very nice day.”
DON’T SEE IT HERE: Something you just don’t see at
car shows in the Northeast –
Vintage water bags hanging
near the radiators of British
cars!
At this car show in Phoenix, Jim Mink spotted two
T-series (above and at right)
with such bags.
We’re sure these were
considered essential accessories for any car traveling
across the desert back in
the day.

TRIATHLON IX • August 26-28, 2011
Point Lookout Resort, Northport, Maine
The Keystone MG club is taking part as a club team!
We plan to leave on Tuesday, August 23, for a leisurely drive north.
Fun weekend event features a mountain climb, fun rally and wacky car show.
Registration limited to 100 cars. Register now with $75 deposit.
Package cost of $625 includes two nights lodging for two, all meals, all event fees.
British car clubs from throughout the northeast attend the British Marque Car Club News “Triathlon,” a fun-filled weekend event held every other year. The Keystone Region MG Club made a group appearance at the 2009 event, dressed in more or less authentic 1960s70s hippie garb, to match the era most of our cars were built. The Triathlon features a hill climb, a rally and a fun, informal car show,
which is where some clubs have started coming up with themes and costumes to help win points. Triathlon IX will be held in August in
Northport, Maine, and a group is already forming to go, to reprise the “hippie” theme. (Hey, it’s easy and cheap to do, so why not?)
Get your registration with $75 deposit in now.
Registration form on next page.
